Fantastic Fest Film Review: ‘Suspiria’ 2018!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 24th, 2018

Fantastic Fest’s Secret Screening this year was the remake of Suspiria starring Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton. Everyone in the theater loved it and the buzz in the Drafthouse afterward was fever pitch. Every review I have seen so far has praised it up and down. Unfortunately, this is not going to be one of those reviews. I recently rewatched the original Suspiria because to say this movie is very hyped in the horror community would be an understatement so I was prepared to see it next month. As the festival got closer and Suspiria wasn’t announced as an opening or closing film it slowly became the odds-on favorite for the secret screening. As I sat down to watch, I was truly excited.

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

61HRk7rEWAL

THE FILM

The next franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes with mystical and magical powers in ‘Doctor Strange‘, which is a damn good start to this new character. ‘Doctor Strange‘ was created by Steve Ditko and first appeared in Strange Tales #110 back in 1963. ‘Doctor Strange‘ or Stephen Strange is a highly intelligent surgeon who is in the top of his field. In an accident, he loses the use of his hands, which leads him to seek out alternate methods of healing. This brings him to a mystical and magical place across the globe where he meets ‘The Ancient One’ amongst other sorcerers that help him heal spiritually and physically.

Film Review: ‘The BFG’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 29th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

maxresdefault

I’m just thankful that Steven Spielberg is not doing awful period pieces like his last films, including ‘Lincoln‘, ‘War Horse‘, and ‘Bridge of Spies‘. Yes, those films won Oscars, but I’m willing to bet you’ve only seen the once and will never see them again. I’m thankful and excited that Spielberg has returned, at least for a few films into his magical world of sci-fi, which he excels at. This time around, Spielberg is tackling the children’s story of ‘The BFG‘ or ‘Big Friendly Giant’, by the great author Roald Dahl (‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory‘, ‘Matilda‘, ‘James and the Giant Peach‘, and ‘The Witches‘).

Film Review: ‘Zoolander 2’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 10th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

zoolander

It’s been fifteen years since we saw Derek Zoolander perform on stage in the world of male fashion modeling. That first film, directed by Ben Stiller himself was a brilliant and hilarious satire on the fashion modeling world with a little bit of action and silliness packed in at every corner. ‘Zoolander‘ and many of its characters became instant cult icons. Even many lines of dialogue are still quoted today in everyday life from the first film. Stiller himself has said he’s wanted to do a sequel for the past several years now, but nothing has come together, but one script made it through and everyone signed back on for ‘Zoolander 2‘.

Film Review: ‘Hail, Caesar!”

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 3rd, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

hail-caesar-josh-brolin

It’s always a good time when the Coen Bros. have a new movie in theaters. Film after film, the Coen Bros. have not only told bizarre, funny, violent, musical stories, but have conjured up some of the best characters in movie history. Their uncanny talent for telling stories on film is unrivaled with each movie they make. Their latest endeavor tackles the early years of Hollywood, specifically the year 1951, in a film called ‘Hail, Caesar!‘ that has an A-List cast of Coen regulars and newcomers. Even though the posters and trailers show this A-List cast throughout, the film follows one man, and that is Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin), based on the real life Mannix who was a big time producer and  “fixer” at MGM.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

hail-caesar

Coen Brothers fans, you can start getting even more excited, because the Coen’s new film ‘Hail Caesar!‘ is coming out next month. We have a new trailer for the film, which is all sorts of funny and takes place during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Instead of the usual quick cuts and one liners in a trailer, we have a nice long clip with Alden Ehrenreich and Ralph Fiennes. Fiennes is trying to teach Alden how to speak with a proper British accent, and is comedy gold.

Two great family film companies, Walden Media and Jim Henson Productions, are joining forces to produce, and develop an original story about a rather nasty subject, a pagan demon who punishes wicked children at Christmas. Did I mention he has horns and looks fifty shades of creepy? They’ve gone with the title ‘Happy Krampus!‘ so they’re going to make it a family-friendly project with a live-action production.

Film Review: ‘Trainwreck’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 15th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

NEbTciZPpnq3ei_1_b

Comedy mastermind Judd Apatow is back this year with a new feature film called ‘Trainwreck‘ and is his best film since ‘Knocked Up‘. That was eight years ago. Sure, Apatow has written and produced dozens of films since then, but has only really directed two other feature films since, being ‘Funny People‘ and ‘This is 40‘. The usual actors are nowhere to be seen in ‘Trainwreck‘ either. There is no Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Jason Segel, Martin Starr, or even James Franco to be seen anywhere on screen. Actress and comedienne Amy Schumer wrote the screenplay here for Apatow to direct and the two are a perfect pair.

What do a hit-and-run, a risky business venture, and several unlikely romantic pairings all have in common? I’m sure some of you have put some money down on Oscar pools at works or with your friends to see who comes out the winner this year. There were some excellent movies this year along with some amazing performances, so needless to say, this year will be extremely difficult to predict.

APATOW-articleLarge

The guy who brought us ‘The 40 Year Old Virgin‘, ‘Knocked Up‘, and ‘Funny People‘ has a new film called ‘Trainwreck‘. Yes, Judd Apatow is back in the director’s seat again, this time with the beautiful comedienne Amy Schumer in the lead role. Apatow has really evolved as a filmmaker since ‘The 40 Year Old Virgin‘ in telling better and more personal stories of relationships, but still having those hilarious dick jokes and gross-out gags to make us belly laugh.

Hey guys, Jana here,

The-Coen-brothers-007

When we’re talking Hollywood, or just about movies in general and someone mentions the Coen’s. Everyone gets a different image in their heads. Some immediately think of Nicolas Cage‘s creepy porn-stache in ‘Raising Arizona‘, others think of the twangy song made popular in ‘O Brother Where Art Thou?‘ (which is currently on my iPod). Still others think of ‘The Dude’ in ‘The Big Lebowski‘.

Hello, Jana here,

roald-dahl-the-bfg

Roald Dahl is a fantastic author that doesn’t get nearly enough mainstream credit. Film-goers have enjoyed his stories for years and most of us grew up with at least one of them. Favorites like ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’, ‘The Witches‘, ‘Matilda‘ and ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox‘ are a few examples of Dahl’s work that has been given a big screen treatment. Now we can add to that list ‘The BFG‘.

Film Review: ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 23rd, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

in-only-lovers-left-alive-001

If all the Emo and Hipster kids got together and made a vampire film, it would probably play out a bit like ‘Only Lovers Left Alive‘, which has an excellent soundtrack, moody vampires who hate everything but new underground music, and talk about how much they hate everything. It gets old very fast. But instead of the Emo and Hipster kids, we got famed director Jim Jarmusch who directed ‘Down By Law‘,’ Ghost Dog: Way of The Samurai‘, ‘Coffee and Cigarettes‘, and ‘ Dead Man‘, and ‘Broken Flowers‘ to name a few – not exactly a light-weight. Jarmusch is an acquired taste like a fine 40-year old scotch, where not all people have developed a taste for the director, but those with exquisite taste love his work. I consider myself the latter. But once in a while, some of our favorite directors make a movie that is ultimately forgettable and doesn’t live up to the filmmaker’s past work. And that is where I stand with Jarmusch’s vampire film ‘Only Lovers Left Alive‘.

Disney Preps Live-Action Cruella de Vil Film !!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 1st, 2013

Jana B., Here….

3500536_std

If Hollywood teaches us anything lately it’s that evil sells. Think of Disney, alone. You will be hard pressed to find any of their cash cow cartoons without an utterly evil antagonist. Which I love. It seems like you take the scary, evil guy in any horror movie and stack them against Dr. Facilier from ‘Princess and the Frog‘, or Maleficent from ‘Sleeping Beauty‘, and my favorite, although he’s far less scary – Captain Hook from ‘Peter Pan‘. I repeat. Evil sells. Every major motion picture studio and every 3rd grader with dreams of being a film maker know this, too.
