After hearing that Tom Cruise has been set to star in ‘The Mummyreboot, it should come as no surprise that a huge name like Johnny Depp would be attached to ‘The Invisible Man‘ reboot. When Universal sets its mind to creating a movie monster universe that makes us think Marvel, they come out of the gate swinging. First Cruise, now Depp, what is next and who is behind this? Angelina Jolie for ‘Bride of Frankenstein‘ maybe?

Black Mass‘. I’ve been waiting for this movie for a long time, I love mafia storylines. Give me ‘The Sopranos‘, ‘Goodfellas‘, ‘The Departed‘ and ‘The Godfather trilogy’, books, documentaries, whatever it is, I dive in head-first. Bonus points if the stories are true, as in the case of Whitey Bulger.

There are few actors as widely known in Hollywood as Johnny Depp is right now. If you take his fan base and star power and attach it to a  writer-filmmaker of remarkable erudition like Kevin Smith, what results is going to be momentous. Smith has a farcical sense of humor and everything he writes is peppered with the same wry commentary that is fan-freaking-tastic!

Black Mass‘ is going to be an excellent send-off for the summer movie season when it’s released next year on September 18, 2015. There is some major star-power in this flick. Every fangirl in the world is going to be in line for this one as it pairs up none other than the ‘captain of summer-movie revenue’ himself, Johnny Depp with the newer, but no-less glorious to the fangirl scene, Benedict CumberbatchJoining Depp and Cumberbatch are Jesse Plemons (‘Breaking Bad‘), Dakota Johnson (‘Fifty Shades of Grey‘) and Juno Temple (‘Maleficent‘, ‘Horns‘). The film is based on the book ‘Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob‘ written by Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill

Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer Are Clueless Idiots!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 7th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

 lone_ranger_810

I don’t usually write open letters like this on the site, but I feel like I need to with the recent statements Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer made about American film critics. Their remarks about the press and journalists are asinine, childish, and unprofessional. I get that everyone is entitled to their opinion and are free to say whatever they feel like. But what Depp and Hammer said was wrong.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Johnny Depp will be back for ‘Alice in Wonderland 2‘ as the iconic Mad Hatter, and why shouldn’t he be. The first ‘Alice in Wonderland‘ grossed over $1 billion worldwide, and he needs to do something quick as ‘The Lone Ranger‘ might be one of the biggest flops ever and questioned his star status. I hear that back in March, Depp signed a big multi-year deal to star in several films, and this one might be his first.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Here’s your first look at Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in ‘The Lone Ranger’.  This project by Gore Verbinsky has had some trouble getting off the ground, but has resumed nicely.  This film has a budget of $215 million dollars, which is incredibly insane.  Depp plays Tonto and Hammer plays the Lone Ranger.  I know you all know who Depp is, but to refresh your memory, Hammer played the Winklevoss twins in ‘The Social Network’.  The film will release on July 3 of next year.  Your thoughts?

THE FILM

(This film review portion was written by Dan Moran.)

The fifth installment of Disney’s nearly $4 billion dollar franchise is a Pirates movie through and through. It is about 20 minutes too long, has a needlessly complex plot, fantastic action set pieces, and way too many characters. I found it to be a real roller coaster viewing experience, where some points I was loving every single second of what was on screen and others I wanted to check my phone to see how much longer was left. There were no scenes in this entire movie that I was just ‘Ok’ with. I was either loving it or tolerating it. When it was all over I was pleased with the ending and, more importantly, that it ended.

Film Review: ‘Black Mass’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 16th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 8.01.58 PM

It’s okay to look at ‘Black Mass‘ as a distant sequel to the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ movies. Both have bad guys, wars, guns, monsters, and Johnny Depp. Maybe I’m reaching a bit there, but it’s still fun to think about them as distant cousins in movies. The story of James ‘Whitey’ Bulger has been told a lot, especially recently. If you’re unfamiliar with who Bulger is, he was one of the most vicious and heinous human beings to ever walk the planet. He was even the FBI’s Most Wanted man for more than a decade, as he spent most of his time in Boston as a mafia boss who committed murder amongst other things.

It’s not only makeup, hairstyle and fashion trends that undergo a huge upheaval and massive makeovers as the years progress, film has been doing the same thing since the first piece of celluloid lit up a white screen. Film Review: ‘Cinderella’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 12th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

CINDERELLA

I’m not sure why Disney is hell-bent on remaking all of their classic animated films into live-action reboots, but that seems to be the case nowadays. With ‘Snow White and The Huntsman‘ to ‘Maleficent‘ and now with ‘Cinderella‘, Disney is banking on popular movie stars to re-energize their classic titles. The problem is that these are not any good. While there is probably a built in audience already and new generations are now getting to see these old tales, it might be financially viable to think about rebooting these franchises. But in order to do that, you must make something that is quality, which none of these are.

Could Kaya Scodelario Be Heading To The High Seas?!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 22nd, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

Kaya-Scodelario

There are some film franchises that can continue churning out hit after hit after hit. ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ isn’t that franchise anymore. The first film, was epic, grand and sweeping and everyone got caught up in the timeless nature of the story, the romanticism of running away with a pirate and pirates being pirates who will do anything they must to achieve their goals. The second film came and I was even more intrigued because this time there was the whole mystique of Davy Jones thrown into the beautiful mix. Then the third…and the fourth…..and now a fifth. I’m pirated out. It’s over, man the rowboats, search for survivors and head for shore. Alas, Disney won’t listen to me, much like Marvel doesn’t listen to me either. If crowds love it and swarm to it, it’s easy to get greedy and kick out film after film with the only goal being to capitalize on the current hot trend. It IS possible to have too much of a good thing! If I can actually have too much bacon to the point where I’m giving it away, it’s possible to have too many frakking pirate movies!

A few things are expected when you view a Tim Burton film…dark comedy, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and a twisted outcome.  Big Eyes is different.  The true story of Margaret D.H. Keane/Margaret (Amy Adams), a renowned artist, is told in bright light.  The only seemingly twisted or dark aspect of Big Eyes are the twin pools of the deepest fathoms that are the eyes of the people in Margaret’s paintings.  Big Eyes follows the sad yet courageous journey of Margaret from the escape from her first marriage to her triumph of finding her self as well as her voice.

Jana’s Best/Worst of 2014!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 15th, 2014

It’s been a big year for the entertainment world. Netflix’s initial push to bring movie-theater worthy films straight to streaming customers and bypassing the big screen altogether set off a chain of deals that will take those fresh releases and push them directly into homes allowing us to bypass a $15.00 soda, but denying us the $20.00 popcorn you can only get at the theater. Then came the deluge of series and movies being made for exclusive run with everyone from Netflix, Amazon to Crackle and everything in between. Top that off with the huge breach of privacy Sony experienced. New releases were flooded onto P2P sharing sites and private emails from the film company’s big wigs that show us how the infrastructure of Sony really works, not to mention what those involved really think of some of their superstars.

from-hell-main

From Hell‘ may sound like the name of a Johnny Depp film from the early 2000’s and you would be right. What began as a 500 page graphic novel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell, then re-worked into a 20th Century Fox film starring Depp and Robbie Coltrane. There may be a bit of a detective vibe here but don’t expect a Sherlock-type reveal. Where Jack the Ripper was quite selective of his victims, the murders themselves created an equality among the classes with fear being the common denominator. Thus ends today’s master class in ‘From Hell‘.

Pee-Wee Herman Is Coming Back To Big Screens in 2015!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Oct 22nd, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

Looking back at growing up in the 80’s made me realize just how surreal the whole experience really was. In remembering my childhood, there are several things that stand out more than others, Cabbage Patch Kids, Aquanet , ‘New Kids On The Block‘, cereal that had no redeeming nutritional value whatsoever besides being easy enough for a kid to serve themselves while parents slept in on Saturday mornings, and a lineup of cartoons that kept us occupied while we slowly reached sugar-induced coma levels of happiness.  That’s right, Saturday morning telly was geared toward kids. I had roughly 3 channels that broadcast what came to be the soundtrack to my childhood and some of my best memories. Every remote jockey, i.e. the oldest sibling, had the channel jump down to an art form in order to ensure that we made it to the right channel at the right time to catch the personalized lineup of cartoons that took us weeks to master. I didn’t want to wake up to go to school, but you better believe I was up at 6:30am so that I wouldn’t miss the beginning of my favorite day of television.

I love Johnny Depp and I loved a few of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ films with Depp’s interpretation of the complete wild card that is Captain Jack Sparrow. I watched the next two installments and loved the new element that came to play as we met Davy Jones, his crew and the legend built as we saw our heroes fight to take the tentacled captain down. I was getting bored with the third film as the crew searched for Captain Jack. I rolled my eyes when ‘On Stranger Tides‘ brought the noticeable absence of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, but replaced the girl power with Penelope Cruz. I’ve tried dozens of times to watch that film and have never once made it all the way through it. I knew that sequel was the beginning of the end of a fun franchise. Disney didn’t get the memo.

Kevin Smith is a film maker that turned the business of making movies on it’s head. He hit the jackpot with 1994’s ‘Clerks‘. The script had “personal experience” written all over it and it made a very unexpected splash. Since then Smith has laid some pretty decent comedy on film, excluding ‘Jersey Girl‘.  I adore most of his films and it all started with ‘Clerks‘. Smith kept the indie-style film making with him the whole way. Nothing could prove that more than his latest film, ‘Tusk‘.

There is no doubt that Kevin Smith belongs in the same bracket as some of the best directors and story tellers of all time. He along with Quentin Tarantino and a few other filmmakers in the early 90s made their own creative films on a very cheap budget and hit success and have continued to make films still to this day. But Kevin’s story is quite the fun one. This is a guy who loves comics and movies who dropped out of film school, worked at a video store and maxed out his credit cards to the tune of $20k to make his first film ‘Clerks‘.

Drawing from his time with the kids, he writes a story about children who don’t want to grow up. Disney is hoping the golden goose lays another blockbuster with ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales“. We’ve got a release date of July 7, 2017. I’m a big Johnny Depp fan, and I love the Pirates movies. There’s a point where you have to let a good thing end while it’s still awesome. The last film ‘On Stranger Tides‘, seemed to begin digging it’s own resting place in Davey Jones’ Locker. I really think that’s where the franchise jumped the proverbial shark. I kind of think Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley‘s departures started the series in a tail spin.

The Top 10 Perfectly Cast Movie Roles!!

Top Ten Perfectly Cast Roles

The Bard of Avon said it best, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” Some actors are great, and shine in everything they do (Leonardo DiCaprio, Gary Oldman, Daniel Day-Lewis). Some actors are smart enough to pick roles that best use their limited skill sets (Keanu Reeves). This list takes a look at the perfect pairing of actor and role. In this list, you will find a pairing of actor and role so great that the actor ceases to be themselves and instead makes the character take on a life of its own. These pairings are so uniquely theirs that you can’t imagine anyone else taking their place should Hollywood have the audacity to try.

I still watch Disney cartoons under the guise of “my kids want to watch it”, no one buys this anymore, it just makes me feel a little less like a 7 year old if I pass it off as the kids. Like anything,  there are favorites and then you have those not-so-favorites that you watch only if you have to and you’re going to stare at the top corner of the screen to try and keep from crying. ‘Dumbo‘ falls into that category for me. It has it’s good points, a drunk mouse is ALWAYS hysterical, but the whole separating Dumbo from his mom is just mean. I get it, there has to be an event that moves the story forward and apparently this heart-crushingly brutal scene is vital. I can’t listen to Alison Krauss sing ‘Baby Mine‘ as that is enough to send the water-works into a permanent and soul-crushing on position.

Film Review: ‘For No Good Reason’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 14th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

for-no-good-reason640

One of the most recognized artists of a generation whose artwork has sparked debate, protests, and change is still very alive and well. Coming across as the horror version of Michelangelo, Ralph Steadman is still producing great artwork and has allowed a husband-wife producer/director team to film a documentary on his life and art. Steadman is now 77 years old and lives with his family in a nice villa in the countryside of England where his fellow friend Johnny Depp came over and played the role of interviewer during this 80 minute well-edited documentary.

The Top 10 Gangster Movie List!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 19th, 2014

Jana B. here,

GangsterListBANNER

Some girls are all into sappy romances or heart touchingly saccharine-sweet movies. Movies that sometime contain a troubled family learning to love a curmudgeonly, absent  grandparent, or a shattered family recovering from the death of one of its immediate member. Sometimes it’s a pet that waltzes, unexpectedly, into a tumultuous atmosphere that teaches everyone to love more before it’s killed in some unimaginative way.

I hate movies like that. I hate books like that and I hate songs like that. If a member of a family is killed, it better be a mafia family, and I get to look forward to their violent, bloody and evil retribution.  I am so fascinated by the inner workings of these ‘families’. I love to see the fronts they use to launder their income and imagine ways I would do it if I was involved.

Hi, Bryan Here…

22_Jump_Street_39621

I’ve been waiting for this sequel since the end of the first film, and now we finally have a trailer, well a red-band trailer, which is even better. Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and Ice Cube are back for ‘22 Jump Street‘, a direct sequel from the hilarious comedy hit ‘21 Jump Street‘, which was based off the old 80’s television show that starred Johnny Depp.

Jana B., Here…

The Weinstein Company has purchased the big screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth from Studiocanal. The heart-breakingly gorgeous Michael Fassbender, younger Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto from X-Men: First Class and the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past is cast as the titular Macbeth. Marion Cotillard has signed on to play Lady Macbeth. Cotillard is fairly well known for playing Billie Frechette opposite Johnny Depp’s Dillinger in Public Enemies. She also recently, and most notably, played Talia al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises. I first realized her star power when I saw her Ridley Scott’s A Good Year playing opposite Russell Crowe.

Film Review: ‘The Lone Ranger’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 2nd, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

tonto-theloneranger-cliffs

Director Gore Verbinsky certainly borrows heavily from his animated Western, ‘Rango‘, along with some other choice films for his latest mega budget action adventure film ‘The Lone Ranger‘. In what seems to be a project greenlit only for the fact that Johnny Depp was willing to get in makeup and costume again and sport a new iconic character, this remake is deeply flawed and way too long. Running at two-and-a-half hours, this adventure flick could have been loads better with a full hour knocked off its run-time.

Cate Blanchett has already been cast as the wicked stepmother and Lily James (‘Wrath of the Titans‘) will play Cinderella.

Here are the 2013 Super Bowl Movie Trailers!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 3rd, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Iron-Man-31

It’s Super Bowl Day, meaning us fellow movie geeks are only interested in a couple of things. 1) Movie trailers. 2) The commercials. 3) Food. 4) The Puppy Bowl. Not necessarily in that order. I mean, the Puppy Bowl is really the only time out of the year where the entire world is at peace and everything is a bit brighter. But, this isn’t about the Puppy Bowl.  This is about some really amazing movie trailers that will be shown during the big game this year.  We can expect a new ‘Iron Man 3‘ trailer, a new ‘World War Z‘ trailer, ‘The Lone Ranger‘ trailer, and another ‘Oz‘ trailer.  Plus some other surprises.  Below are the trailers you can see before anyone else does.  Enjoy.

Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller have hired Joseph Gordon-Levitt for their sequel film ‘Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For‘, which just happens to be my favorite story out of the ‘Sin City‘ series.  Gordon-Levitt will take on the role of Johnny, which is pretty much the lead character that overlaps a few of the stories that will be featured in the film.

Take a Look at Disney’s ‘The Lone Ranger’ Trailer!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 11th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Here is the 2nd trailer for ‘The Lone Ranger‘ starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer.  The first trailer we watched came out a few months ago and was about a minute shorter than this one.  I hope this turns out good and not like the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ films.  Gore Verbinski has teamed up with Depp again to make this epic picture, and at one time was going to be one of the most expensive films ever made, and the studio axed the project all together.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Here is the trailer for the Peter Jackson produced documentary about the story of the West Memphis 3.  The film centers on the private investigators and forensic testing financed by Jackson and Walsh.  It has been one year since the three guys have been freed, however supporters are still trying to get an outright exoneration from the state of Arkansas, because Arkansas made the three guys take the Alford plea.  The Alford plea made the three guys plead guilty while denying they committed the crime.  This was so that Arkansas wouldn’t have to shell out money in lawsuits for 20 years of wrongful imprisonment.

Bryan’s Review of ‘Dark Shadows’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 9th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here…

The Dukes of Hazzard, The Addams Family, and the A-Team are all television shows that have become feature films over the past several years. The latest television show to be remade on the big screen is the 60’s television series, Dark Shadows. With its dark humor, strange characters, and gothic set pieces, how could off-beat director Tim Burton resist?  Unfortunately, Dark Shadows proves yet again that even though you have an expansive budget, amazing set pieces, and good actors, you don’t necessarily get a quality film.  Dark Shadows fails to humanize any of the characters besides Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp), and although it started off as a fun quirky film, it never improved or advanced after the first ten minutes.

It’s brutally impossible to fathom The Doors’ 1971 Elektra Records masterpiece, “L.A. Woman,” is the Los Angeles quartet’s sixth and final album with singer/poet/shaman Jim Morrison, not to mention sounding as fresh and amazing as anything that has come out since, by any band. What’s equally impossible is to hear an album you’ve heard millions of times in your life for the very first time, and yet, “Mr. Mojo Risin’: The Story of L.A. Woman” is a uniquely superb and insightful document chronicling the making-of the band’s storied swan song that allows you to experience this magnificent piece of work for what feels like the very first time (again.) Hollywood has a rich tradition of releasing competing movie projects at virtually the same time.  Armageddon squared off against Deep Impact.  Before that, Big duked it out with Vice Versa and roughly 87 other body-swapping comedies, the last of which was kept on a shelf until finally being released earlier this year (The Change-Up).  So it is that two studios have set their sights on updated interpretations of Snow White, currently scheduled to be released with 3 months of each other. Hi Bryan Here….

Now I’ll be honest.  I have only seen the first Pirates film and now I have seen the latest ‘On Stranger Tides’ film.  I didn’t care much for the first film.  I felt it dragged and was too boring. I know it had a huge budget and was full of adventure, but the adventure and action was less than stellar.  I know I’m the odd man out on this issue as I know tons of friends love this series of films and swear by it, but really never did much for me.  Saying that, I do think Johnny Depp is AMAZING in these films.  He definitely deserves an Oscar WIN.  Other than that and maybe the fact that Keith Richards has a little something to do with the films, I just can’t get into it.  Same rings true for this ‘On Stranger Tides’ sequel.  Yes, it had a bit more thrill and fun, but ultimately fell short.  I wish I felt differently.  I really want to like these movies, but sadly I can’t do it.

Bryan Becomes A ‘Dead Man’!!! (A Blu-Ray Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 22nd, 2011

Hi Bryan Here…..

‘Dead Man’ might be my favorite Jim Jarmusch film.  Yes, better than ‘Coffee and Cigarettes’, ‘Broken Flowers’, and ‘Ghost Dog’.  The cast of ‘Dead Man’ is amazing with its lead being super star Johnny Depp.  Some think this is a western film.  I like to think of ‘Dead Man’ as the ultimate experimental western.  ‘Dead Man’ is simple and plain AWESOME.  This movie has everything going for it.  The acting, the story, the filming, the story, and the characters.  They all come together to erupt a truly creative and brutal film.  Highly recommended.

It is a Tim Burton day at Boomstick.  Who would have thought.  I guess it is because that tree in the backyard grew all twisted like and has a small opening at the bas of the trunk for me to  crawl through.  Hmmmm.

In addition you will be getting a Nightmare Before Christmas skeleton key flash drive that already has all the music from the box set on it.

If that wasn’t enough, how abotu a 250 page hardcover book with essays, interviews, pictures and a forward by Johnny Depp.  The books covers the films and music of Danny Elfman and Tim Burton.

I really feel so bad for Terry Gilliam.  He is one of my favorite directors, but it seems with every movie he tries to make, things happen that prevent him from making gold.

With his latest almost film “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” which he has been trying to make for about a decade now, all the financing has fallen through.  Even with Johnny Depp starring in the picture.  The whole thing was documented in the 2002 documentary “Lost in La Mancha”.

So Gilliam returned to the project only to say about a month ago at a film festival: “The financing collapsed about a month and a half ago. I shouldn’t be here. The plan was to be shooting ‘Quixote’ right now.”

He went on to say : “Robert Duvall is Quixote, Ewan McGregor is also there, and we are looking for new financing right now. Don Quixote gives me something to look forward to, always. Maybe the most frightening thing is to actually make the film.”

So after this tragic news, there was a proposed 3-D conversion for his amazing 1980’s adventure film “Time Bandits”.  He had this to say about it: “We are in discussions to make a 3D version of the film ‘[Time] Bandits.’ That will not change anything in the film itself will remain the same and if I think it serves as some passages in ‘Alice [In Wonderland’], the 3D should work well. Anyway, I’ll have fun with it!”

Seriously Terry Gilliam knows what he is doing.  If you don’t believe me then watch ” Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” or “Brazil” or “Time Bandits”.

With the sad news of Quixote, we might get something awesome.  A restored Time Bandits film and that can be amazing.
