Blu-ray Review: ‘Boardwalk Empire’ Complete Series!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 19th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

91BNj35rUrL._SL1500_

THE SERIES

I remember when the pilot episode for ‘Boardwalk Empire‘ aired on HBO back in 2010, which was directed by Martin Scorsese. After the episode aired, I said to my friends, “that was one of the best pilots to any television show I had ever seen.” They all seemed to agree. What followed was five season of some of the best storytelling set in the prohibition era of America, complete with historical figures and gangsters. It was almost like it was ‘Goodfellas‘, but set in the early 1920s. The series followed Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), who was based on a real guy, who secretly controlled the Boardwalk in Atlantic City and bribed politicians and presidents to make his rise to power much easier.

Hey guys, Jana here,

HBO has made a name on it’s original and edgey content for itself over the years, there are spectacular examples to support that argument with ‘The Sopranos‘, ‘True Blood, the original ground-breaker ‘Sex and the City‘ and recently with ‘Boardwalk Empire‘.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Boardwalk Empire’ Season 5!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 15th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

91djH+eDidL._SL1500_

THE SERIES

It’s sad to see this amazing gangster show come to an end. It’s been a great five years, and this last season did a lot of things right in regards to wrapping up story lines and character arcs. I remember watching the first episode, which was directed by Martin Scorsese and thinking this is one of the better pilot episodes I’ve ever seen. I still think that to this day. There have been some great characters over the years, and it was sad to see how some of them ended up, but make no mistake, this fifth and final season hit its mark. HBO shortened this final season to only eight episodes and focused on wrapping up each character with an emphasis on Nucky Thompson’s (Steve Buscemi) childhood, upbringing, and how he became who he is.

Hi Bryan Here….

HBO’s ‘Boardwalk Empire’ is easily one of the most brilliant and engaging series to air in the past decade.  It is full of colorful characters, gripping story lines, and tons of violence and sex.  And all of the series is based on actual people and events from the roaring 20’s in Atlantic City.  You can tell that everyone involved with the series has a passion and love for the show.  This bluray release is incredible.  The video and audio are top notch while the extras are a lot of fun for any fan of the show.  This gets my highest recommendation.  So let’s have a glass of scotch and be secret about it.

Boardwalk Empire Has Been Renewed for a 2nd Season

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 21st, 2010

I knew this show would be a hit.  It was so well done.  Read my review of the first episode HERE.

HBO has ordered a 2nd season of Boardwalk Empire already.  No word on a premiere date or number of episodes, but it is in stone.  Also the premiere of the 1st episode this past Sunday had just under 5 million viewers which was HBO’s largest premiere in six years.  Well Done HBO.  Below is the press release.  ENJOY!

HBO RENEWS BOARDWALK EMPIRE FOR SECOND SEASON

“LOS ANGELES, Sept. 21, 2010 – Following resounding critical approval and high viewer numbers for the series’ Sept. 19 debut, HBO has renewed BOARDWALK EMPIRE for a second season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming.

“All the ingredients aligned for this one, from Mark Wahlberg and Steve Levinson’s initial pitch, to Martin Scorsese’s enormous contributions as director and executive producer, to the genius of Terry Winter and the expertise of Tim Van Patten, to a stellar cast led by Steve Buscemi,” said Lombardo. “The response from the media and our viewers has been nothing short of amazing.”

From Terence Winter, Emmy® Award-winning writer of “The Sopranos” and Academy Award®-winning director Martin Scorsese, BOARDWALK EMPIRE is set in Atlantic City at the dawn of Prohibition, when the sale of alcohol became illegal throughout the United States.

Among the early critical raves, People called the show “not-to-be-missed,” hailing Steve Buscemi’s “brilliant, brutally funny performance,” while USA Today observed that BOARDWALK EMPIRE “looks to be the season’s best new show on any outlet.” The Philadelphia Inquirer said the series “stands at the pinnacle of TV achievement,” with the New York Observer noting, “It’s really, really good.”

The Sept. 19 premiere of BOARDWALK EMPIRE averaged 4.8 million viewers during the 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT) airing to score HBO’s largest premiere of any program in over six years (since March 21, 2004 – “Deadwood” with “The Sopranos” as lead-in). With additional plays at 10:15 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., BOARDWALK EMPIRE was watched by a combined 7.1 million viewers for the night.

Season one credits: Created by Terence Winter, BOARDWALK EMPIRE is executive produced by Terence Winter, Martin Scorsese, Tim Van Patten, Stephen Levinson and Mark Wahlberg; co-executive producers, Gene Kelly and Lawrence Konner; producers (series), Rudd Simmons and Rick Yorn; producer (pilot), David Coatsworth; supervising producers, Howard Korder and Margaret Nagle.”

Bryan Takes A Walk Through the Boardwalk Empire (Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 20th, 2010

HBO’s new prohibition gangster era series might be the best series to come out of the channel.  HBO already gave us an amazing gangster show at one point with The Sopranos.  But Boardwalk Empire takes the cake.

On the subject of The Sopranos, former writer/ producer of The Sopranos, Terrence Winter is the mastermind behind the new Boardwalk Empire series.  Add to that a former Sopranos victim, Steve Buschemi who plays the lead character, “Nucky Thompson” and you already have a start to a great show.

Martin Scorsese lends his talent to direct the first episode of the series which is nothing short of perfection.  Scorsese really has knack for making gangster films.  I believe this his first direction of something on tv that is fiction since the 1980’s.

It really seems HBO put tons of money into this show.  All the CGI and costumes to make the 1920’s look like the actual 1920’s is spectacular.  You can tall a whole lot of love and time went into making this show right and real.

In the first episode you will see the start of Al Capone, a midget boxing match, a silent film of Fatty Arbuckle, quite a bit of gore and uber extreme violence, and much much more.

Omar from “The Wire” makes a small appearance in the first episode.  I have a feeling that in episodes to come he will be a key character to Nucky.

Already this show has entranced me and I cannot wait until next Sunday.

I think the only other show that will be this good or better this year will be “The Walking Dead” on AMC.

What did you think of the first episode?

Soundtracks we want to see released on Vinyl!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 15th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

preview

I just love soundtracks to movies. I always have and I believe I always will. There is something about a score to a film that just perks me up in all the right ways and inspires my creative side, whether it be to write a screenplay or go back an watch that old film I love. Music is an integral part to films and is considered to be the mojo of every movie. I’m sure we’ve all seen that odd YouTube video of the final scene in Star Wars: A New Hope, where Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Chewbacca walk down a crowded arena to receive their medals to zero music. It’s super weird and awkward with no music, but just random sound effects of footsteps and a rare cough, laugh, and Chewie’s roar. John Williams did such a great job, as he always does with Star Wars music, but that final scene of music really puts your emotions on full blast. It’s all from the soundtrack too.

There are two things Martin Scorsese knows a lot about, one of them is making movies and the other is making mob movies. From ‘Goodfellas‘, to ‘Gangs of New York‘, to ‘The Departed‘ with several stops in between, his films speak for themselves so it’s no wonder that a bit of a bidding war has broken out around his latest project ‘The Irishman‘. The companies are sending up their white flags with Netflix standing on the pile of broken bodies, the victor.

When Ben Affleck isn’t making the next Boston crime movie or saying “Yes” to a cameo role in Kevin Smith’s latest direct-to-video film, he’s reading comic books with Matt Damon and deciding on which next Hollywood starlet to take out for a steak dinner and never call again. The guy is a badass in every sense of the word. There’s nothing he can’t do. I’m just surprised he doesn’t have an EGOT yet. You can say a lot of things about Affleck, but you can’t say he doesn’t know when to say “no”. Film Review: ‘Live By Night’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 11th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

I’m a big fan of Ben Affleck. When he stepped into the director’s chair with ‘Gone Baby Gone‘, he showed the world that he was one hell of a filmmaker that had a strong passion for cinema and how it’s made. ‘The Town‘ was also a gritty crime caper that was well shot with excellent performances, which paved the way for Affleck to twin the Oscar for his best directed film to date – ‘Argo‘. When it was announced that Affleck was going to write, direct, and star in ‘Live By Night‘, a prohibition era gangster film with similarities to ‘Goodfellas‘ and HBO’s ‘Boardwalk Empire’, I was extremely excited, because Affleck had not led me astray with his films that he’s directed so far.

I would say I’m a loyal fan. Take Ewan McGregor for example – I’ve seen every film I can find, heard him narrate a piece on polar bears for PBS and watched his motorcycle treks, I even have the book! This loyalty is not spent on McGregor, alone, but a handful of actors/actresses and directors make up my little circle. One of those directors is Martin Scorsese. If he made it, chances are I’m going to love it. Back in January there was talk of Steven Spielberg and Javier Bardem heading toward a script written by Steve Zaillian. The script in question was to showcase the murderous history of Cortes and Montezuma. Neither Bardem  nor Spielberg were officially attached to the project and if it is still in progress, it’s doing so quietly.

Hollywood has found their New ‘Ben-Hur’!!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

ben-hur-8

We have been talking about the ‘Ben-Hur‘ remake for a while here at Boomstick HQ, and now we have heard a big piece of information on casting. First, let’s go over what we already know. We do know that MGM and Paramount have teamed up to make a big budget ‘Ben-Hur‘ remake with director Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch, Day Watch, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) to helm the film. We also reported  earlier last week that Morgan Freeman was cast in the film. He will play Ildarin, the man who teaches the slave Ben-Hur to become the big bad chariot racer he turns out to be. And for a while, we were hearing that studio execs were putting out the offer to Tom Hiddleston (Loki from ‘The Avengers‘). But that’s not the case now.

If you look at the film ‘Shutter Island‘, you can see a prescription that provides instant success. The components are an amazing director in the form of Martin Scorsese, amazing acting via Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Michelle Williams and Max von Sydow. If you add a great story to base the whole premise on, like Dennis Lehane’s source novel, you can create the perfect storm. This is what happened in 2010 when audiences took in the film as it hit theaters.

Seth Grahame-Smith has made a name for himself in the book world and in the film world. He was a writer and producer since around 2000 and his been a part of projects like ‘The Hard Times of RJ Berger‘ and ‘Dark Shadows‘. Then came the big screen adaptation of his novel ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter‘, from there he picked up several more projects. He is currently writing the ‘Beetlejuice‘ sequel for Director Tim Burton and signed on as a producer for the project. In a producer capacity, he is involved in the ‘It‘ remake, the ‘Gremlins‘ reboot and ‘Ninjago‘. I’ll spare you the argument I have against film remakes.

Film Review: ‘Jersey Boys’!!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

Film Review-Jersey Boys

You might think it’s quite odd that Clint Eastwood directed a musical this year with ‘Jersey Boys‘, which is an adaptation of the Broadway stage play that is currently the 13th longest running show in history based on the careers of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, but you’d be wrong. In fact, Eastwood is very big in the music scene and always has been. You remember the film ‘Honkytonk Man‘ and ‘Bird‘, don’t you, which were both about musicians. And you can add to this the eight films he wrote and composed the music for. My point is that Eastwood is a solid choice for this great musical adapted into a feature film.

Hi, Jana here,

What do you do when a Marvel movie flops with a more deafening thud than Crystal Pepsi? You re-tool it, sell it to Netflix where it becomes an episodic challenge. Where the feature film had big budgets and big stars to it’s credit, this series is going to attempt to make more out of less. Daredevil fans everywhere will have an opinion on what they expect from the new show. My expectations for this show is that it NOT suck. Not asking much, just the lack of major suckage.

Daredevil Has Been Cast!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 27th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

uploads_5bfaa222-4344-4ff7-b261-7ad22e5b4fad-Daredevil

We all know that Netflix and Marvel have teamed up to bring us a treasure trove of TV series based on their comic book  characters. One of them being Daredevil/Matt Murdock. Well it looks like Daredevil has been cast and it is NOT Ben Affleck. Rather it is the great actor Charlie Cox who is most known for his role on HBO’sBoardwalk Empire‘ and lead in ‘Stardust‘.

John Cusack Enters the Wall Street World!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 29th, 2014

Hello, Jana here,

John Cusack with a serious expression wearing a suit and tie

When you set a series in the world of Wall Street, you need characters colorful enough to not get lost in the atmosphere. Take ‘The Wolf of Wall Street‘, for example, Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of Jordan Belfort was larger than life. He had to be outrageous to stand out in the fast-paced, high-stakes land of the almighty dollar. Christian Bale’s version of Patrick Bateman from ‘American Psycho‘ stands out just as much. Granted, these personalities are not what you would assume to be the norm for traders working on Wall Street, but the ambience definitely fosters these type of personalities.

Misty S. Delivers Her Thoughts On ‘Grown Ups 2’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 11th, 2013

Misty S., Here….

grown-ups-2-1

Adam Sandler, the founder of Happy Madison films, has used the same formula for every movie that he has ever done. He took some of his unknown buddies that have all started in his first movie “Billy Madison” and every movie since, combined with his ‘Saturday Night Live‘ buddies and throws in some big guest appearances for added entertainment to create a comedic movie that all will love and flock to go see in the theaters. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t. This time, though, it did better than I expected it to. ‘Grown Ups 2‘, the obvious sequel to ‘Grown Ups‘, came and delivered, even with all the press and hype to it. This movie is not really a sequel since it can be watched without seeing the first one, but when one does not know what to call a “sequel”, just add a #2 to it. Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Rock and Kevin James have the chemistry and natural banter, like they had in the first one, that makes the movie ebb and flow without hardly any slow or unfunny scenes to sit through. There are, however, the same jokes that you see in all of the Happy Madison films and even on ‘Saturday Night Live‘. This is the type of film that when you walk into it, you are already knowledgeable of what is going to happen.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Seven Psychopaths’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 8th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

130607091142426857

Martin McDonagh’sSeven Psychopaths’ is highly entertaining.  I was a huge fan of McDonagh’s ‘In Bruges’ and have since then been wanting more from him.  It’s been four years since ‘In Bruges’, which was the last thing McDonagh did, and I can safely say that McDonagh’s writing and directing has only gotten better.  McDonagh is the next Tarantino and ’Seven Psychopaths’ is an excellent film.

Film Review: ‘Snitch’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 21st, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Snitch-The-rock

I was thoroughly impressed with Ric Roman Waugh’s ‘Snitch’, but for different reasons than you expect. Inspired by true events like most movies these days, this particular film produces a sense of true fear and hopelessness rather than show cheesy light-hearted inspiring stories that we tend to see in these “true event’ stories. And Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson leaves his ‘The Rock‘ name at home and plays a real human being who is in over his head with some real bad guys. Not only that, Johnson proves that his acting ability is worthy of not a WWE Championship, but of an acting award.

Hi, Bryan Here….

AMF_4861 (109 of 196).NEF

Oh man, this movie looks so good.  Michael Shannon might be one of the best actors out there right now.  Everything he’s in is amazing.  His role on HBO’sBoardwalk Empire‘ is creepy and yet satisfying. And I know he is just going to be the best Zod in the upcoming ‘Man of Steel‘ ever.  Now, we get him as a serial killer and assassin, with what looks like one hell of a cast minus David Schwimmer.  The trailer looks very intense.  Can’t wait to see it.

Hi, Bryan Here….

globes-drink

The Golden Globes were last night and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler killed it. They were amazing.  Even former president Bill Clinton showed up to talk about Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln‘.  Even though I really liked the film ‘Argo‘, I was shocked when it won best film and director for Ben Affleck. I was happy to see ‘Django Unchained‘ win for best supporting actor for Christoph Waltz and screenplay for Tarantino. If this is any pre-cursor to the Oscars, I’d be completely let down if ‘Argo‘ takes it all.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great film, but not the best film of the year.  I expect it to and want it to win the best adapted screenplay.  Just my opinion.  Below are the full results from last night’s show.

Hi, Bryan Here….

The nominations came in this morning and needless to say, I went into a fit of rage.  I mean I was so mad, I almost wrote a letter.  After going through the list of nominees, while some of the noms were well deserved, many were not, especially in the FILM categories.  There needs to be a serious uprooting process at the Golden Globes where everyone involved in voting needs to be replaced by others who know what they’re doing.

2012 Emmy Award Winners!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 24th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Below is the list of the winners for the 2012 Prime-Time Emmy Award Winners.  I don’t  see how ‘Modern Family’ and ‘Two and Half Men’ win anything.  They shouldn’t win any kind of award when they go up against shows like ‘Mad Men’, ‘Game of Thrones’, and ‘Breaking Bad’.  The Emmy judges need to be fired and never allowed to pick winners ever again.  However, much congratulations to ‘Homeland’, ‘Downton Abbey’, Aaron Paul, ‘Veep’, and ‘American Horror Story’

Taylor Reviews ‘Men In Black 3’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 25th, 2012

Taylor Here….

I was worried about Men in Black III.  Almost every minute of Men and Black II made me wish I’d snuck in a beer or six, and I don’t think I could take more disappointment from Will Smith.  I still haven’t fully forgiven him for Hancock. The third installment turned out to be about 1000% better than the second effort, chock full of witty one-liners, truly disgusting alien encounters, and a few good men who look damn fine in black suits and skinny ties.

Goodfellas Coming To Series??

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 23rd, 2010

Deadline Hollywood reports that “GoodFellas” screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi is pitching a TV show based on the Pileggi book adapted into Martin Scorsese’s 1990 mob classic.

It is not known yet if it will got to basic cable, or pay cable, or premium cable for it does not have a studio yet or a channel.

If this does come to fruition, it better go to either HBO or Showtime.

I think this has something to do with HBO’S premiere of Boardwalk Empire which had it’s largest viewing in over six years.

Any thoughts?

So we’ve known for a while that there is going to be a re-make of the Marvel superhero ‘Daredevil‘. We know that Marvel has partnered with Netflix to bring us a 13-episode drama based on the comic book stories of the blind, lawyer from Hell’s Kitchen.

We’ve known for a while that Charlie Cox (‘Boardwalk Empire‘) is going to play the eponymous Matt Murdock/Daredevil, and that Vincent D’Onofrio (‘Law and Order‘)  is going to play the juxtapositional Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin. Today, we’ve gotten some more casting news. Deborah Ann Woll, Jessica from ‘True Blood‘ has been given the role of Karen Page.

The Top 10 Gangster Movie List!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 19th, 2014

Jana B. here,

GangsterListBANNER

Some girls are all into sappy romances or heart touchingly saccharine-sweet movies. Movies that sometime contain a troubled family learning to love a curmudgeonly, absent  grandparent, or a shattered family recovering from the death of one of its immediate member. Sometimes it’s a pet that waltzes, unexpectedly, into a tumultuous atmosphere that teaches everyone to love more before it’s killed in some unimaginative way.

I hate movies like that. I hate books like that and I hate songs like that. If a member of a family is killed, it better be a mafia family, and I get to look forward to their violent, bloody and evil retribution.  I am so fascinated by the inner workings of these ‘families’. I love to see the fronts they use to launder their income and imagine ways I would do it if I was involved.
