Jun/2018

We have a very fun 60th episode of our fun podcast under the MULTI-MEDIA MEN banner called ‘Media-Ocrity‘, where the show is just – okay. Here on the show, we focus strictly on horror/sci-fi, comic books, and video games – basically all the fun stuff that tickles your fancy. In our 60th episode, titled ‘Stranger Lethal Weapons‘, we talk about the new Netflix shows ‘Stranger Things 2‘, ‘Mind Hunters‘, and the late breaking news on Kevin Spacey and the cancellation of ‘House of Cards‘. We also dive into ideas for ‘Lethal Weapon 5‘ since that is a thing now. Then we get into some quick video game coverage and onto overrated movies, which nearly killed me. Literally, I almost died. Then it was onto a ton of horror movie franchises and Dinner for 5, where we talk about who we would invite to a dinner party (living or dead).  It was so much fun. This episode is guaranteed to thrill you, chill you, and fulfill you. I am joined pop-culture wizard Jonathan Atterbury and comic book artist Jeremy Megert.

Hi Bryan Here…..

I’m a huge sucker for HBO original programming.  HBO is pretty consistent in how amazing their original programming is.  With ‘How to Make it in America’, it just fell flat to me.  The show is okay to some degree.  I like the actors in the show especially Lake Bell.  She is going high places.  And Eddie Kaye Thomas (Finch) is pretty great too, but I just don’t really identify with any of the characters.  But I might be one of the odd men out on this one as I know tons of friends love the show.  But this release is packed with tons of extras and a pretty decent video/audio presentation.

Hi Bryan Here….

I love seeing films from first-time directors.  This is the first film from David Robert Mitchell and it looks great.  IMDB says: “Four young people navigate the suburban wonderland of metro-Detroit looking for love and adventure on the last weekend of summer.”  I think this one will do well by word of mouth.  It looks great.  Can’t wait.  Enjoy the trailer below.

Hi Bryan Here….

It’s great to see JCVD’s return to the big screen with  what will hopefully be a brutal action film.  It has been too long.  Jean Claude returned to the screen a few years ago with his critically acclaimed part documentary part fiction film ‘JCVD’.  I couldn’t believe how amazing Van Damme was in this movie.  He absolutely deserved an acting award.  Now it seems with his upcoming film ‘Assassination Games’ which has already been picked up by Sony, Van Damme will head another production called ‘Six Bullets’.

Hi Bryan here…

I had a hell of a good time with The Expendables.  It was kind of an ultimate action film winking at previous action films along the way.  All the characters were set up brilliantly in the first film and I look forward to a sequel.  But this time, according to the LA Times, Stallone is looking to hand over his directing and writing duties to others.

4K UHD Review: ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 1!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 7th, 2018

THE SERIES

HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ series is one of the better series to come out in the last 20 years.  Based on the books by George R.R. Martin, which are called ‘A Song of Fire and Ice’, this series adaptation is top notch in every aspect.  If you haven’t seen HBO’s ‘ Game of Thrones’ or read George R.R. Martin’s novels, then I highly suggest you do a few things.  First, purchase this 4K UHD set.  It will be one of the best purchases you will make this year so far.  Second, set your DVR’s to record the last season coming up in a few months.  And third, get the books, because they are truly a great read.  This is one of the best HBO series to have ever been aired and it will sorely be missed when it’s gone.

Theatre Review: The Second City Summer Blockbuster!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 7th, 2018

It’s been over a decade since I last saw The Second City live. If you remember correctly, The Second City is the hilarious comedy enterprise that started a several decades ago in Chicago. It was the highlight for comedy and comedians to enhance and perform their sketch comedy and improv. Since the inception of The Second City, many talented entertainers have started there, including Bill Murray, Tina Fey, John Candy, Steve Carrell, Amy Poehler, Stephen Colbert, and many others.

Blu-ray Review: ‘A Wrinkle In Time’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 30th, 2018

THE FILM

(This film portion was written by Beka Perlstein!)

I really wanted to like A Wrinkle in Time more than I did. I gave it my best shot, but in the end, the only thing I can honestly say was that it had lots of great colors. Perhaps it was my high expectations for a Disney film, plus Oprah Winfrey and Mindy Kaling that set me up for disappointment, but regardless, I was left feeling let down in a film that I knew practically nothing about. I have never read the 1962 Madeleine L’Engle novel, so I honestly had no clue what the plot was but whatever, it’s Disney, it’s gonna be good. Well…

Top 10 Moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Thus Far!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 15th, 2018

Black Panther is debuting very soon and in 3 short months, we will witness Infinity War on the big screen, which is the culmination of all 18 Marvel movies that came before it. I love the Marvel movies, at a minimum they get how to entertain and present their characters in the most appealing way possible. I’m sure that Black Panther will have an incredible moment or two and without a doubt the spectacle that Infinity War HAS to be will present us with some memorable scenes. Until then I figured I would share my 10 Favorite Moments from the MCU so far.

THE FILM

Back in 2009, the brilliant filmmaker Sam Raimi journeyed back to his horror roots and made a fun-as-hell horror-comedy film called ‘Drag Me To Hell‘. For those of you who don’t remember who Sam Raimi is, movies like ‘Evil Dead II‘, ‘Army of Darkness‘, ‘The Spider-Man Trilogy‘, and ‘Darkman‘ are some of his accomplishments. Raimi and his brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi had an idea for a horror film called ‘The Curse‘, but when Raimi booked the ‘Spider-Man‘ gig, that film was put on hold for the next decade. After ‘Spider-Man 3‘ was released, Sam and Ivan went quickly back to their idea to work on a low budget horror film again, which turned into ‘Drag Me To Hell’.

Film Review: ‘Somebody’s Darling’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 11th, 2017

If you paid me $1 million, I wouldn’t be able to tell you why this movie is named Somebody’s Darling. I had no clue what this movie was about going into it, and after it ended, the title still made no sense. Somebody’s Darling isn’t a 1950s romp or a story about a lovable shelter dog named Darling just looking for a home. Instead, it’s a horror movie about a fraternity. The head of a fraternity named Christian (on the nose) falls for a young college girl named Sarah and the supernatural secrets about his fraternity start to show.

Film Review: ‘Fear Us Women’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 28th, 2017

ISIS has quickly become a hot topic in politics and the new organization of terror to defeat in the Middle East. Their ruthless genocide and enslavement of women has sparked major concern around the world, and many exasperated civilians are giving up their lives to answer the call of duty. Taking us right into the desert trenches of Northern Syria, the new documentary ‘Fear Us Women‘ showcases Hanna Bohman, a Canadian who recently reevaluated her life and volunteered to aid in a revolution of women’s rights. In just under thirty minutes, Director David Darg has gracefully shot an enlightening chronicle of sacrifice and bravery. He shows us that women can be fierce and, above all else, fearless.

You’re never too old for this shit as Warner Bros. is talking with everyone about a new ‘Lethal Weapon‘ film that brings back the original cast. That name isn’t a typo either. Channing Gibson wrote ‘Lethal Weapon 4‘ and ‘Walking Tall‘ with The Rock. This would also bring back Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in their respective and iconic roles.

Written By Bryan Kluger:

THE FILM

(This film review portion was written by Dan Moran.)

The fifth installment of Disney’s nearly $4 billion dollar franchise is a Pirates movie through and through. It is about 20 minutes too long, has a needlessly complex plot, fantastic action set pieces, and way too many characters. I found it to be a real roller coaster viewing experience, where some points I was loving every single second of what was on screen and others I wanted to check my phone to see how much longer was left. There were no scenes in this entire movie that I was just ‘Ok’ with. I was either loving it or tolerating it. When it was all over I was pleased with the ending and, more importantly, that it ended.

The best way for me to describe this trailer is ‘Grumpy Old Men‘ with Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones and swap out Ann-Margaret for Rene Russo. While you’re at it you can replace the snow with Palm Springs and add in some mafia intrigue and action. So it’s only like ‘Grumpy Old Men‘ in the way curmudgeonly men snipe at each other and fight over a woman, I guess.

Coming to America 2 is Happening!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 28th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

It looks like it’s official. ‘Coming to America 2‘ is finally happening. I’m on the fence about this at this moment in time, because the original film that was directed by John Landis and starred Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, and James Earl Jones, amongst a ton of other great actors is one of the funniest films ever made with a ton of heart. Doing a sequel so many years later – – I have my doubts, since nobody from the original film has signed on yet.

Theatre Review: ‘Fun Home’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 18th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Fun Home‘ won Best Musical at the Tony awards in 2015 and is now on the traveling road circuit across America. With a great message, good performances, and a couple of good songs, ‘Fun Home‘ is enjoyable, sweet, and tragic, but maybe not the big award winner it was a couple of years ago. In fact, I think this story would’ve been better told in a more intimate setting, and not the big amazing theatres it’s been playing at. With a very simple set and a very intimate story, I never really felt a sense of connection. ‘Fun Home‘ is a coming-of-age story of a woman who comes out as a lesbian and her gay father who struggles with his current family and coming out of the closet.

Film Review: ‘American Assassin’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 15th, 2017

Dan M. here…

You can’t make an action movie like this in 2017 and expect anyone to be impressed with it. Not when studios crank out Bourne, Bond, John Wick, Atomic Blonde, The Raid, etc. Those are movies that execute things at such a high level with passable stories that at least allow you to buy into the character. Hell, even Jack Reacher had some self-awareness to it that made the shrug-worthy, ridiculous, sequel mildly enjoyable. American Assassin is an all-around pretty bad movie but it does have a few bright spots. It honestly felt like the writers watched a Bourne movie, then got high, and played 3 hours of Call of Duty on easy difficulty before putting pen to paper.

Film Review: Home Again!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 7th, 2017

Audrey E., here….

Since their resurrection in the late 20th century, romantic comedies began digging their heels into the film industry and eventually gained permanent footing with audiences. By definition, rom-coms have amusing and sprightly plot-lines, circling around the ideal that true love can overcome any hitch, and women are simply helpless without their male counterparts. However, the genre has started morphing into something different lately; women are taking the leading role as well as the director’s chair. Despite all appearances, ‘Home Again’ announces that romance doesn’t have to take center stage, and women can be multi-dimensional, driven and even find happiness despite their losses in love.

Film Review #2: Spider-Man: Homecoming!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 7th, 2017

Dan M., here….

Spider-Man: Homecoming is a really good “Marvel” (too lazy to explain all the Sony stuff) movie that is hopefully the breath of fresh air the MCU needs. It had much smaller stakes, much more realized supporting cast and World that they operated in, a good villain that made sense, and a finale that didn’t turn into a $45million CGI punching. If the future of the solo Marvel films is going to be smaller universe conflicts that are more narrowly focused like this and Ant-Man? I am here for it. Leave space to Guardians & Thor, the end of the World to the Avengers, and weird dimensions to Doctor Strange. Give me low level criminals that Spider-Man has to fight before a math test to break those huge films up any day of the week.

Film Review: It Comes At Night!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 7th, 2017

Audrey E., here….

Screen Shot 2017-06-07 at 10.56.25 PM

Fear comes in many forms, but sometimes the most frightening horrors are the things we cannot see: the unknown. Trey Edward Shults, the Texas filmmaker who brought us his critically acclaimed SXSW debut (Krisha) in 2015, is back with his sophomore effort, ‘It Comes at Night.’ This flick is a high suspense mastery of smothering isolation, paranoia and unnatural evils. It prickles the senses and keeps the boiling tensions of dread so high, you might forget to breathe!
