Film Review #2: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 4th, 2017

Taika Waititi legitimately reinvigorated  the marvel brand with Thor: Ragnarok. A lot of the criticism that Marvel movies get is that there are no stakes and we know that the heroes will always win. No kidding? That’s every superhero movie. No one thought Iron Man would die, no one thought Cap would die, no one thought Batman was dead in TDKR, no one thought (cared?) Superman died in BvS. Waititi proves that not taking a paint by numbers destroy the world story too seriously can be a damn blast.

Film Review: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 31st, 2017

Thor is starring in his third stand-alone film called ‘Thor: Ragnarok‘ and brings a much needed change to the character in the best possibly way. Thor now has a fun personality and great comedic timing, mostly due to Chris Hemsworth amazing acting chops here. In addition to that, the film is steeped in a hypnotic, yet hyper-active color scheme that looks like Willy Wonka and Andy Warhol got together and decorated a city. In fact, Wonka’s theme ‘Pure Imagination’ is a song that plays in the film. It’s not all cold and stiff dialogue here anymore with brown or earth toned aliens and robots that Thor has to use his hammer to fight. Everyone and everything is covered in bright primary and pastel colors that creates a breath of fresh air in this stale universe. That’s all thanks to filmmaker Taika Waititi for giving his unique vision on this big budget film ($180 million). In previous Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, particularly with Thor, things have been sour and gloomy.

Hey guys, Jana here,

good-omens-1

Life and death, witches and demons, the antichrist, angels and secrets surrounding the end of the world. They all have one thing in common, you’ll find all of them in the pages of ‘Good Omens‘ by Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett. This isn’t a book review, because I’d need way more space and time than you’d be willing to give me, but this IS a flaming awesome announcement about said novel. It’s coming to TV!

The works of literary great Robert A. Heinlein have been immortalized on celluloid since 1950 with more than a dozen projects adapted from his written works including ‘Project Moon Base‘, ‘Red Planet‘, ‘The Puppet Masters‘ and ‘Starship Troopers‘. While the novels didn’t quite transfer seamlessly from one story-telling avenue to the other, the general theme has been the same. Hoping to make a successful transition with one of Heinlen’s more difficult pieces is Bryan Singer, and the title is ‘The Moon is a Harsh Mistress‘.

Film Review: ‘Thor: The Dark World’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 7th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Thor-2_2709663b

And we’re back with the first non-Iron-Man sequel in the Marvel universe with ‘Thor: The Dark World‘, with the entire cast back ready for more saving the universe and defeating evil. However, this time around, the sequel felt uneasy and a little bit off, as it dragged in the mid-section quite a bit, or when Tom Hiddleston’s Loki (Thor’s adopted brother) is not on screen. Sure, the main event is Thor himself (Chris Hemsworth), but he seems to take a back seat for most of the film, as the co-stars really drive this movie as Thor smashes his hammer from foe to foe.

Feast Your Eyes on the New ‘Thor 2’ Trailer!!!

Hi, Bryan Here….

thor-the-dark-world-first-official-poster-strikes

Here is the first trailer for the sequel to Marvel’sThor‘ titled ‘Thor: The Dark World‘. It seems like Marvel is going for an edgier and darker tone with this one. We’ve heard rumors this was the direction it was going, and after viewing the trailer, I can confirm that things get pretty gritty.  Alan Taylor is directing this 2nd installment and I have complete trust that he will do a fine job judging by his credits.

Classic Waxxx: Big Mama Thornton “In Europe”

by NapkinArt on Jul 15th, 2011

The era of the power-house female blues singer is long gone. Bessie Smith. Janis Joplin. Memphis Minnie. Big Maybelle. But, one of the absolute greats here is Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton, whose blues will absolutely shake you to your foundation.

Outside of hardcore blues fans Big Mama Thornton is probably one of the more obscure of the blues singers, as her career began in 1951, but started to fade quickly in the late 1950s/early 1960s. However, Thornton recorded with some of the most notable blues musicians of her day, many now legendary, like Buddy Guy, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Muddy Waters and Big Walter Horton. Bryan Journeys Into Mystery With “Thor”!!! (A Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on May 8th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here…

The Almighty Thor is finally here.  Marvel’s next feature film in their line of super-hero films revving up for the huge epic “Avengers” film may surprise you.  Thor is great.  It’s very different from the past Marvel films, but different is very good.  Especially for a hero like Thor.  What makes Thor different from the other Marvel Super-Heroes in films is that Thor is not from Earth nor is he really a human.  He is a GOD.  And when I think of Thor my brain usually goes to the Greek Mythology place and to that Shakespearean universe.  So it was only too perfect that Shakespearean vet, Kenneth Branagh would be the director for this epic film of Thor.

Thor Figures Selling on Ebay????

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 26th, 2010

From the upcoming Thor movie from Marvel and directed by Kenneth Branagh, it seems that somebody is selling Thor action figures online already.  It shows Thor and Odin I think and what appears to be some sort of Ice Monster.

What do you think?

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook

Since the first Iron Man film, Jon Favreau and Marvel have gone to great lengths to show us glimpses of some of our favorite superheroes in subtle ways throughout the Marvel hero films.

Now when we all pick up our copy of Iron Man 2 on bluray/dvd, take a close look and see if you see the references to Captain America, Thor, and Black Panther.

Specifically the scene featuring Tony Stark and Nick Fury discussing the Avengers Initiative, the background of which was littered with an assortment of footage, maps and images hinting at other Marvel properties.

[The first is] from “The Incredible Hulk”, which means Iron Man 2 took place before “The Incredible Hulk.” If you look you see the the crater on the other monitor, that’s the “Thor” thing. That’s where the hammer was recovered. This is just a geek heaven here.

And if you think that anything on this monitors is not something we at Marvel didn’t talk about for hours – you are crazy! See, there is a map up there, so… if you look at those maps, each one of those locations corresponds to something in the Marvel Universe. I’m not supposed to say that.

And if you look on each one, and I know what they mean, but I’m not gonna say it, but I’m gonna say this: Two of them relate to “The First Avenger: Captain America,” one of them relates to “Thor.” The one in Africa relates to Black Panther.

Pre-order the Iron Man 2 dvd/bluray below for a great discount.

4K UHD Review: ‘Jigsaw’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 16th, 2018

THE FILM

Wait, what? He’s back? He’s really back with his infamous contraptions that kill people? Of course he’s back, even after a seven year hiatus, which was the last time we watched the Saw franchise on the big screen. Jigsaw marks the 8th film in the series since 2004 and with an eight film combined budget of $77 million, the box office gross of all eight films is a hair-line under $1 billion. So if you think there will be more Saw films with more Tobin Bell, the answer is a hard “yes”. The Spierig Bros. (Undead, Predestination, Daybreakers) are in the director chairs this time around as they put Jigsaw/John Cramer (Bell) in the center of the story.

4K UHD Review: ‘Batman Begins’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 2nd, 2018

THE FILM

Since 1989, we were thrilled to have Batman movies. In 1989, we received are first big budget Batman film from newcomer director at the time Tim Burton. It went onto be a box office sensation and spawned three more sequels, which became increasingly worse and silly. By the time the 4th film got around, it was more like watching a slapstick cartoon than anything good or resembling Batman. In fact, the franchise became a joke. Then came along Christopher Nolan who made his trilogy of Batman films, starting with ‘Batman Begins‘, which told a much darker and realistic side of the Dark Knight. The results were astounding on both critical and box office fronts.

Jana’s Best of 2017!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 1st, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

I know these “Best of 2017” lists should technically be published in 2017, but why would I start 2018 any differently than I lived the majority of my adult life: Procrastinating and underachieving. What can I say? That’s my wheelhouse.

For a year that put a spotlight on some of the shittiest behavior by some of the Hollywood elite, it was actually a good year for TV and movies. I didn’t limit myself in number because as I moved on with the brackets, I felt like I was making ‘Sophie’s Choice‘ on some of these, so they’re all getting in! I’m feeling my inner-Oprah here, You’ve made the list! You made the list! EVERYBODY made the list!! In order to spare myself any arguments, I’m stating up front that my picks for the “Best of 2017” are not edited in regards to scandal or hideous human behavior.

Film Review: ‘Justice League’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 17th, 2017

There are several things about Justice League that are good. I think the cast is terrific. Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck, Jason Momoa, and Ezra Miller are great in their roles. They each have a character moment (earned or not) that makes me interested in seeing their next solo adventure. DC/WB has put some talented filmmakers in charge of the next slate of movies. Justin Lin doing Aquaman sounds great, Patty Jenkins taking Wonder Woman on her next adventure, and Matt Reeves writing and directing The Batman. These are world-class filmmakers who have a great actor in the title role and hopefully that leads to some great story telling. I have no idea who is directing The Flash but I did enjoy him as the comic relief character in Justice League and would like to see if he is more than that in the future. Even Henry Cavill’s “new” Superman was delightful as he is reborn in this film and is no longer a whiney douchebag with terrible parents. Man of Steel 2 is actually on my radar now! But those are the nicest things I can say about Justice League. I loved the cast and I look forward to their solo adventures because having them all together in whatever Justice League was/is/supposed to be was a horrific insult to the fans of DC and moviegoers in general.

‘Leatherface’ is ripping up the Blu-ray World!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 7th, 2017

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre‘ is perhaps one of the most terrifying and best horror films to ever be released. That was back in 1974. Tobe Hooper and that film really paved the way for many filmmakers and the horror genre over the years that continues to this day. We’ve seen sequels, prequels, reboots, remakes, and everything in between since then. The newest film is simply called ‘Leatherface‘, which takes its cue from the original ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3‘ film. I haven’t seen this yet, but I’ve heard from a few people that it’s the best film since the original one in 1974. I’m not sure what to think about that, but I’ll have answers shortly for you on this. ‘Leatherface‘ acts as a prequel to other films as we get to see how ‘Leatherface‘ became the maniacal being he is known to be.

Film Review: ‘Goodbye Christopher Robin’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 19th, 2017

Written by: Audrey Evans

If asked to refer back to their fondest memories, most adults would likely gloat about experiences from their youth. And honestly, what individual hasn’t reminisced about days of innocence and longed for that childhood comfort of a bedtime story? In ‘Goodbye Christopher Robin,’ we’re given a glimpse into the life and inspiration behind Author A.A. Milne’s book Winnie-the-Pooh – a children’s classic that is collectively referred to as the most cherished of all time. Though true life stories are often challenging to represent, Director Simon Curtis uses his aptitude for history to create an authentic bio-drama that dodges the sentimental distaste of many, and also explores the paramount effects of childhood celebrity and war.

Film Review: ‘Rebel in the Rye’!!

by Janet White on Oct 14th, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

The Catcher in the Rye took the U.S. by storm nearly from its initial printing. The author, J.D. Salinger, transformed from obscurity to magnified limelight causing him to retract from the world. The more the public wanted to know him or be his infamous character, Holden Caulfield, the more withdrawn Salinger became which increased the mystery. In the past 66 years, the novel has been printed, re-printed, translated and massively distributed throughout the world. Schools have both required and banned the reading for reasons of profanity and its message. Rebel in the Rye details Salinger’s (Nicholas Hoult) life and progression as a writer. From his early years as a willful, smart mouth to an obsessed literary giant. Read the rest of this entry »

For those of you unaware, ‘Good Omens‘, which is technically titled ‘Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch‘, and it’s co-written by Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett. These are not two lightweight authors that had to team up to get a book published, but rather, two literary giants that chose to bless us with their combined greatness.

Film Review: Dan Dream!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 26th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

From the creative duo that brought us ‘Klovn’ and ‘Klown‘, comes their next twisted comedy with a ton of heart called ‘Dan Dream‘, that tells the true life story of the world’s first electric car. If you’ve ever had the privilege to watch ‘Klown‘, then you know about the off-beat humor of the Danish team Casper Christensen and Frank Hvam have owned since they stepped into the film world. With their silly bodily humor, they still manage to tell engaging and heart felt stories. Dan Dream is no different and has shades of ‘Little Miss Sunshine‘ throughout. Casper and Frank, who also star in the film, have perfectly captured this small moment in history with all its glory and warts in their unique brand of of comedy that includes butts and poop.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Narcos’ Season 2!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 4th, 2017

THE SERIES

There are a ton of drug trafficking shows and movies out there in the cinema universe, that sometimes it can be difficult to tall one from the other. ‘Narcos‘ stands on its own though, with very realistic details brought to life and keen sense to intimate stories that are put on screen. The performances are all award-worthy in this very violent tv show that allows you to sympathize and connect to both sides of this drug war. It’s something that not all creative shows can do well, but ‘Narcos‘ succeeds on all levels.

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

There’s a new movie coming out called Brad’s Status that stars Ben Stiller in what seems to be a dramatic role for the comedic actor. I’d say this performance has award nomination all over it, which has me gushing with excitement over Stiller. I’ve always been a big fan of Stiller and he’s proven he’s a brilliant director and can sell performances all over the spectrum. There was a run of movies that seemed like the same schtick over and over, but this film looks very good and has a ton of heart. I just hope the whole film is as good as this trailer, even though it looks to show the entire movie in it. I wish Hollywood would stop doing this.

Film Review: ‘[The Dark Tower]’!!

by Janet White on Aug 5th, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

From the warped, creative mind of Stephen King comes a story of the oldest of battles, good versus evil. The master of the weird provided eight books in The Dark Tower series for Nikolaj Arcel, the director, to mold and shape for our viewing pleasure. Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor), a seemingly typical kid, awakes from slumber with his walls and the ground shaking. Natural disaster? No, because it happens far too often. Visions plague Jake’s and the earthquakes are the result, but why? What is it about Jake? He will journey far (and I mean FAR) to discover the truth. Read the rest of this entry »

Goodbye Christopher Robin has a Trailer!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 4th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Looks like Fox Searchlight made a Winnie the Pooh movie without Winnie the Pooh. Instead, they Star Wars prequel-ed it and are bringing us a film called Goodbye Christopher Robin, which nobody wants to see. The film stars Domhall Gleeson, Margot Robbie, and Kelly McDonald that all takes place before Winnie the Pooh was even a thing. In fact, it’s about creating the honey-loving bear and his friends, along with some boring family love and drama. At least there looks to be some Nam-style war flashbacks. Honestly, I might just take a nap and you all can fill me in on this.

This movie sounds like so much fun and a little like that 1980’s horror film by Lamberto Bava called Demons, which followed a bunch of people attending a movie screening of a horror film, only to find out that there was an evil force that turned them into blood thirsty demons. This new film though is called Blood Fest and comes from the Rooster Teeth team, which brought us Red vs Blue and Lazer Team.

Film Review: ‘[Girls Trip]’!!

by Janet White on Jul 22nd, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

We’ve seen this storyline before. Four friends come together, experience a separation, reconnect and hijinks abound. Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #11!

Film Review #2: Spider-Man: Homecoming!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 7th, 2017

Dan M., here….

Spider-Man: Homecoming is a really good “Marvel” (too lazy to explain all the Sony stuff) movie that is hopefully the breath of fresh air the MCU needs. It had much smaller stakes, much more realized supporting cast and World that they operated in, a good villain that made sense, and a finale that didn’t turn into a $45million CGI punching. If the future of the solo Marvel films is going to be smaller universe conflicts that are more narrowly focused like this and Ant-Man? I am here for it. Leave space to Guardians & Thor, the end of the World to the Avengers, and weird dimensions to Doctor Strange. Give me low level criminals that Spider-Man has to fight before a math test to break those huge films up any day of the week.

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

THE FILM

Filmmaker James Mangold has certainly made a name for himself in the Western genre of cinema with the likes of 3:10 To Yuma and more recently Logan. The guy knows how to tell a thrilling story set in the old west as we’ve seen before. Prior to this 2007 version of the film, author Elmore Leonard (Jackie Brown, Get Shorty), wrote a short story, which was adapted into a 1957 film called 3:10 To Yuma. Mangold thought it would serve as a great remake in these modern times and he wasn’t wrong, while he added a few new story conflicts to this great 2007 version.

Dan M., here….

thumbnail_25047

Even when the dust settles and recency bias fades, I can’t imagine LOGAN not being considered one of the greatest superhero films of all time. For me, LOGAN is in the same class as Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 1-2, Iron Man, Reeve’s Superman, Burton’s Batman, etc. I believe all of those comic films work as films and stories first, comic fun second. There are plenty of “fun” comic movies I thoroughly enjoy and love but I wouldn’t classify them as well-crafted films. LOGAN is a great story and character arc first and comic fun second. It just works on every level.

Four friends, Sam (Deutch), Lindsay (Halston Sage), Ally Harris (Cynthy Wu), and Elody (Medalion Rahimi), ruling the school, doing everything together, and partying hard are the ingredients of your typical high school drama. Next, the viewer is inundated with a montage of the people in her world beginning their days in different ways. THE FILM

Back in 2003, we got a different kind of Christmas movie with ‘Bad Santa‘. It was full of vulgarity, sex, drugs, and alcohol. Not exactly your typical holiday spirit Christmas film. However, it was damn funny with some excellent witty dialogue and even had a bit of heart and soul to it, and cemented Billy Bob Thorton’s anti-hero Santa into cult status. If your new to the ‘Bad Santa‘ story, it follows a bank robbing duo who dress up as Santa and his elf and rob department stores on Christmas.

THE FILM

The next franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes with mystical and magical powers in ‘Doctor Strange‘, which is a damn good start to this new character. ‘Doctor Strange‘ was created by Steve Ditko and first appeared in Strange Tales #110 back in 1963. ‘Doctor Strange‘ or Stephen Strange is a highly intelligent surgeon who is in the top of his field. In an accident, he loses the use of his hands, which leads him to seek out alternate methods of healing. This brings him to a mystical and magical place across the globe where he meets ‘The Ancient One’ amongst other sorcerers that help him heal spiritually and physically.

I went back and streamed The Ring to make sure I remembered what the movie was about. Before I started it, I remember that this was a top 10 hand-holding movie back in high school when it came out. I obviously knew that some ghost girl who died in a well would come out a TV and kill anyone who watched a VHS tape. After catching up 15 years later, I can confirm that I have a photographic memory and the entire movie is about watching a tape that sends a creepy girl through the TV to kill you. That girl is named Samara and she is still creepy to look at. Horror movies are such a weird creature because they often contain some really great conflicts. The way to save yourself from being murdered through your TV is to make a copy of the tape and send it on to someone else. The internal conflict of that was actually explored pretty well in the first Ring movie. I was hoping this would be explored more in RINGS so I headed off to the theater.
