4K UHD Review: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 26th, 2018

THE FILM

Thor is starring in his third stand-alone film called ‘Thor: Ragnarok‘ and brings a much needed change to the character in the best possibly way. Thor now has a fun personality and great comedic timing, mostly due to Chris Hemsworth amazing acting chops here. In addition to that, the film is steeped in a hypnotic, yet hyper-active color scheme that looks like Willy Wonka and Andy Warhol got together and decorated a city. In fact, Wonka’s theme ‘Pure Imagination’ is a song that plays in the film. It’s not all cold and stiff dialogue here anymore with brown or earth toned aliens and robots that Thor has to use his hammer to fight. Everyone and everything is covered in bright primary and pastel colors that creates a breath of fresh air in this stale universe. That’s all thanks to filmmaker Taika Waititi for giving his unique vision on this big budget film ($180 million). In previous Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, particularly with Thor, things have been sour and gloomy.

Film Review #2: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 4th, 2017

Taika Waititi legitimately reinvigorated  the marvel brand with Thor: Ragnarok. A lot of the criticism that Marvel movies get is that there are no stakes and we know that the heroes will always win. No kidding? That’s every superhero movie. No one thought Iron Man would die, no one thought Cap would die, no one thought Batman was dead in TDKR, no one thought (cared?) Superman died in BvS. Waititi proves that not taking a paint by numbers destroy the world story too seriously can be a damn blast.

Hey guys, Jana here,

good-omens-1

Life and death, witches and demons, the antichrist, angels and secrets surrounding the end of the world. They all have one thing in common, you’ll find all of them in the pages of ‘Good Omens‘ by Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett. This isn’t a book review, because I’d need way more space and time than you’d be willing to give me, but this IS a flaming awesome announcement about said novel. It’s coming to TV!

The works of literary great Robert A. Heinlein have been immortalized on celluloid since 1950 with more than a dozen projects adapted from his written works including ‘Project Moon Base‘, ‘Red Planet‘, ‘The Puppet Masters‘ and ‘Starship Troopers‘. While the novels didn’t quite transfer seamlessly from one story-telling avenue to the other, the general theme has been the same. Hoping to make a successful transition with one of Heinlen’s more difficult pieces is Bryan Singer, and the title is ‘The Moon is a Harsh Mistress‘.

Film Review: ‘Thor: The Dark World’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 7th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Thor-2_2709663b

And we’re back with the first non-Iron-Man sequel in the Marvel universe with ‘Thor: The Dark World‘, with the entire cast back ready for more saving the universe and defeating evil. However, this time around, the sequel felt uneasy and a little bit off, as it dragged in the mid-section quite a bit, or when Tom Hiddleston’s Loki (Thor’s adopted brother) is not on screen. Sure, the main event is Thor himself (Chris Hemsworth), but he seems to take a back seat for most of the film, as the co-stars really drive this movie as Thor smashes his hammer from foe to foe.

Feast Your Eyes on the New ‘Thor 2’ Trailer!!!

Hi, Bryan Here….

thor-the-dark-world-first-official-poster-strikes

Here is the first trailer for the sequel to Marvel’sThor‘ titled ‘Thor: The Dark World‘. It seems like Marvel is going for an edgier and darker tone with this one. We’ve heard rumors this was the direction it was going, and after viewing the trailer, I can confirm that things get pretty gritty.  Alan Taylor is directing this 2nd installment and I have complete trust that he will do a fine job judging by his credits.

Classic Waxxx: Big Mama Thornton “In Europe”

by NapkinArt on Jul 15th, 2011

The era of the power-house female blues singer is long gone. Bessie Smith. Janis Joplin. Memphis Minnie. Big Maybelle. But, one of the absolute greats here is Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton, whose blues will absolutely shake you to your foundation.

Outside of hardcore blues fans Big Mama Thornton is probably one of the more obscure of the blues singers, as her career began in 1951, but started to fade quickly in the late 1950s/early 1960s. However, Thornton recorded with some of the most notable blues musicians of her day, many now legendary, like Buddy Guy, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Muddy Waters and Big Walter Horton. Bryan Journeys Into Mystery With “Thor”!!! (A Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on May 8th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here…

The Almighty Thor is finally here.  Marvel’s next feature film in their line of super-hero films revving up for the huge epic “Avengers” film may surprise you.  Thor is great.  It’s very different from the past Marvel films, but different is very good.  Especially for a hero like Thor.  What makes Thor different from the other Marvel Super-Heroes in films is that Thor is not from Earth nor is he really a human.  He is a GOD.  And when I think of Thor my brain usually goes to the Greek Mythology place and to that Shakespearean universe.  So it was only too perfect that Shakespearean vet, Kenneth Branagh would be the director for this epic film of Thor.

Thor Figures Selling on Ebay????

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 26th, 2010

From the upcoming Thor movie from Marvel and directed by Kenneth Branagh, it seems that somebody is selling Thor action figures online already.  It shows Thor and Odin I think and what appears to be some sort of Ice Monster.

What do you think?

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook

Since the first Iron Man film, Jon Favreau and Marvel have gone to great lengths to show us glimpses of some of our favorite superheroes in subtle ways throughout the Marvel hero films.

Now when we all pick up our copy of Iron Man 2 on bluray/dvd, take a close look and see if you see the references to Captain America, Thor, and Black Panther.

Specifically the scene featuring Tony Stark and Nick Fury discussing the Avengers Initiative, the background of which was littered with an assortment of footage, maps and images hinting at other Marvel properties.

[The first is] from “The Incredible Hulk”, which means Iron Man 2 took place before “The Incredible Hulk.” If you look you see the the crater on the other monitor, that’s the “Thor” thing. That’s where the hammer was recovered. This is just a geek heaven here.

And if you think that anything on this monitors is not something we at Marvel didn’t talk about for hours – you are crazy! See, there is a map up there, so… if you look at those maps, each one of those locations corresponds to something in the Marvel Universe. I’m not supposed to say that.

And if you look on each one, and I know what they mean, but I’m not gonna say it, but I’m gonna say this: Two of them relate to “The First Avenger: Captain America,” one of them relates to “Thor.” The one in Africa relates to Black Panther.

Pre-order the Iron Man 2 dvd/bluray below for a great discount.

‘Beyond Re-Animator’ Blu-ray Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 22nd, 2018

The third and final installment (thus far) in the ‘Re-Animator‘ film franchise comes ‘Beyond Re-Animator‘ from 2003 and directed by Brian Yuzna who was a producer on the original ‘Re-Animator‘ movie. This third film is a ton of fun and still packs the insane amount of gore these films are known for. Set about a decade after the first film, it follows our favorite doctor (played by Jeffrey Combs) who is in prison now and still trying to perfect his experiment of bringing the dead back to life as we’ve seen in the previous movies.

‘Dagon’ Blu-ray Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 22nd, 2018

There isn’t a horror film like this out there – past, present, or future. This film ‘Dagon‘ is so off-the-wall that it has to be seen to be believed. Directed by Stuart Gordon (‘Re-Animator’) in 2001, ‘Dagon‘ follows two couples who are vacationing off the coast of Europe. At one point during this vacation, one of them sees a mermaid or so he thinks. Soon enough there is a big storm and crashes their boat. One of the couples heads off to get help at a local village to save their friends. Sounds easy and pleasant enough, right? WRONG! Turns out this village is inhabited by some evil fish people all led by a mutant fish monster who must have blood sacrifices.

‘Strait-Jacket’ Blu-ray Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 11th, 2018

William Castle is at it again here with the fun murderous mom movie ‘Straight-Jacket‘ from 1964. Yes, that William Castle who brought the gimmicky movies like ‘The Tingler‘, ‘13 Ghosts‘, and ‘House on Haunted Hill‘. Joan Crawford stars in this film, which came out after her resurgence from ‘What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?‘. She went on to star in very similar roles, but with ‘Straight-Jacket‘, she stars as an ax-wielding murderer – mostly. Of course, production on this film was tense, to say the least, due to Crawford’s presence and diva-like personality. She even got some people fired from the set, but I guess that was the case if you were going to hire Crawford.

‘First Man’ Film Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 11th, 2018

Director Damien Chazelle has boldly departed from his usual song and dance (‘Whiplash’, ‘La La Land’) for a character study about one of America’s most famous, but equally mysterious heroes: Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling). It’s rare to find an individual that hasn’t heard of the moon landing, but ask them about Neil himself? That’s a different story. ‘First Man’ tries to peek behind the helmet into the private life of Apollo 11’s commanding astronaut, but what we ultimately discover about this rocket man is far less interesting than the mission itself. Despite Chazelle’s dedication to his goal, the outcome is a confusingly toned, disconnected and unrevealing biopic that never quite makes a solid landing.

‘The Curse of the Cat People’ Blu-ray Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 8th, 2018

The Cat People‘ really thrilled people back in 1942, so in 1944, they made a sequel called ‘The Curse of the Cat People‘. It was all marketing though as ‘Curse‘ barely had anything to do with the original film, besides some of the same characters and actors. Notably, the filmmaker Ray Wise made this movie. Who is Ray Wise you ask? Holy Shit, I’ll tell you. He directed ‘West Side Story‘, ‘The Sound of Music‘, and even edited ‘Citizen Kane‘ to name a few projects he’s worked on. Not exactly a light-weight.

Not to be confused with Michael Jackson’s song (Rockwell) ‘Somebody’s Watching Me‘, this 1978 made-for-television film called ‘Someone’s Watching Me!‘ was directed by the iconic John Carpenter (Halloween), which interestingly enough, came out a couple of weeks after ‘Halloween‘ was released in theaters. The film stars Lauren Hutton as a young woman who moves from NYC to LA in order to become a TV producer/director. She seems to be enjoying life out there, however, she has a stalker who spies on her from the building across from her with a telescope. ‘Night of the Lepus’ Blu-ray Review!

Back in 1972, a man by the name of William F. Claxton made his last feature film with ‘Night of the Lepus‘, before heading into the TV realm with shows like ‘Little House on the Prairie‘. That’s not a joke either. This movie is based off a book by Russell Braddon from 1964 called ‘The Year of the Angry Rabbit‘. Yes, a killer rabbit movie is what ‘Night of the Lepus‘ movie is all about. It’s about as good as you’d expect it to be, which is not very good. That being said, it’s so bad – it’s good and is so much fun to watch.

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Tingler’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 3rd, 2018

Gimmicks used to be a huge thing in horror movies back in the 1950s. They were used all the time in these low budget horror films to conjure up scares, word-of-mouth, and good publicity to sell a movie that wasn’t necessarily any good. In 1959, filmmaker William Castle (House on Haunted Hill, 13 Ghosts) was a pioneer in using these gimmicks. He was known for paying actors to attend movie screenings and scream and or faint during the film to cause a stir. In House on Haunted Hill, Castle rigged a fake skeleton to fly through actual movie theaters to scare the audience. He was a genius for sure, way ahead of his time. In 1959 though, he made a film called ‘The Tingler‘, which starred Vincent Price. His gimmick for this film was to use some of the budget to attach buzzers to theater seats to simulate scares and screams at certain moments in the movie. It worked perfectly and this is the type of movie where this gimmick succeeds.

It’s hard to believe that this film has been out for 25 years. ‘Hocus Pocus‘ had a strange story to it in that it’s a Halloween film from Disney that was released in the middle of Summer in 1993 against the movie ‘Free Willy‘. It stood no chance whatsoever and only made a little bit more than its budget. That being said, over the past two decades, ‘Hocus Pocus‘ has become a strong cult film amongst adults and kids alike where cosplayers and fans still celebrate this movie to this day with giant fandom. Say what you will about this movie, it’s always impressive that a movie that was virtually disliked by a ton of professionals and didn’t make money when it came out, but has become super successful for twenty years and counting is nothing short of a miracle.

4K UHD Review: ‘Ready Player One’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 18th, 2018

THE FILM

One of the most anticipated movies of the year is finally upon us with Steven Spielberg’s return to the fantasy/sci-fi realm in ‘Ready Player One‘, which is based on the pop-culture fandom novel from 2011 of the same name by author Ernest Cline. The novel was a best-seller and was chock-full of the 1980s and 1990s references in the form of video games, movies, TV shows, and more. in fact, every page of the book was like reading a nostalgic diary of your past childhood favorite things. ‘Ready Player One‘ takes places a few decades into the future where a simulated and very realistic virtual reality game is the main form of entertainment where people put on goggles and can be anyone or anything they want.

Dan Moran’s Review of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 4th, 2018

Ant-Man & The Wasp is perfectly fine. Its ok. It is certainly a two hour movie in which things happen. I was entertained by things that happened in this movie, that I definitely saw, but I don’t think matter at all. I love Paul Rudd. Evangeline Lily as Wasp is delightful. Michael Pena steals every single scene he is in again. Michael Douglas certainly enjoys his paycheck. Walton Goggins is wasted, but my face lit up every time he spoke. This is without a doubt the best cast of all the solo Marvel films. The problem with the movie is that it was released at the worst possible time to get anyone to care about it.

Justifying the Female Villain: An Essay by Tuesday Shank!

Justifying the Female Villain

By Tuesday Shank

(Find Tuesday Shank on Twitter and Instagram!)

I stumbled through my college career. After the better part of six years, I began my work on my senior thesis. I undertook the easiest thesis I could think for myself to do: analyze a television show. My advisor’s academic expertise was gender studies. As a fan of Joss Whedon, I knew of Joss Whedon’s reputation for feminist characters and decided to use my thesis to sing Whedon’s praises.

Thus, I began my work on “Careful Jayne, You’ll Scare the Women: An Analysis of Gender Representations in the Television Show, Firefly”. I watched Firefly enough that I’m still not eager to see it again. Halfway through the semester, I just wanted to watch anything else.

4K UHD Review: ‘Forrest Gump’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 12th, 2018

THE FILM

In 1986, author Winston Groom gave us the book ‘Forrest Gump‘, about a simple minded guy who accomplished a lot through his life, including running a shrimping boat and being an astronaut. That book was made into an award winning film called ‘Forrest Gump‘ that starred Tom Hanks as Gump and Robin Wright Penn, amongst other people. Even though there are many differences from the book, this adaptation that director Robert Zemeckis made was truly inspirational, emotional, and a lot of fun.

Presented here in 4K UHD are the first 4 ‘Jurassic Park‘ films, including ‘Jurassic Park‘, ‘Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World‘, ‘Jurassic Park 3‘, and ‘Jurassic World‘, which came out only a couple of years ago. Back in 1993, Steven Spielberg gave us the world of dinosaurs in such a moving, emotional, and entertaining way, that his first film ‘Jurassic Park‘, became a milestone in filmmaking and paved the way for a ton of creative minds over the next few years. With a mix of practical effects and state-of-the-art CGI effects, Spielberg and his crew of filmmakers created dinosaurs all over again, which became a huge phenomenon.

Film Review: ‘Avengers: Infinity War’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 25th, 2018

For the last decade, we’ve been getting to know most of the Marvel super-heroes. In 2008, we met Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) when the comic book company Marvel decided to start making their own films with their own company, without the help of any other big studio. It was a massive success, which led to 17 more films that included a ton of more superheroes, including Thor, Hulk, Ant-Man, Captain America, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and Guardians of the Galaxy. For the first few superhero films, we were introduced to their origins and character, which led to the first Avengers films. Needless to say, that first Avengers movie broke box office records at the time and put in motion a story arc that culminates into what we have today – ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘.

Film Review #2: ‘Avengers: Infinity War’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 24th, 2018

Avengers: Infinity War isn’t just the next chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie is the culmination, better yet coronation, of the universe to this point. This is the film that will actually be remembered and talked about years from now. Ten years in the making, eighteen films deep, and at least 30 characters so that we could get here. It’s astonishing that they pulled this off. Infinity War, when all is said and done, will likely be the crowning achievement of this cinematic universe.

4K UHD Review: ‘Justice League’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 13th, 2018

THE FILM

(This film portion was written by Dan Moran)

There are several things about Justice League that are good. I think the cast is terrific. Gal GadotBen AffleckJason Momoa, and Ezra Miller are great in their roles. They each have a character moment (earned or not) that makes me interested in seeing their next solo adventure. DC/WB has put some talented filmmakers in charge of the next slate of movies. Justin Lin doing Aquaman sounds great, Patty Jenkins taking Wonder Woman on her next adventure, and Matt Reeves writing and directing The Batman. These are world-class filmmakers who have a great actor in the title role and hopefully that leads to some great story telling. I have no idea who is directing The Flash but I did enjoy him as the comic relief character in Justice League and would like to see if he is more than that in the future. Even Henry Cavill’s “new” Superman was delightful as he is reborn in this film and is no longer a whiney douchebag with terrible parents. Man of Steel 2 is actually on my radar now! But those are the nicest things I can say about Justice League. I loved the cast and I look forward to their solo adventures because having them all together in whatever Justice League was/is/supposed to be was a horrific insult to the fans of DC and moviegoers in general.

Dan Moran’s ‘Black Panther’ Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 16th, 2018

Admittedly, the easiest narrative for Black Panther reviews is that it is a “game-changer”, “important”, “redefines hero”, etc. Those narratives and feelings aren’t wrong. I think Black Panther is one of Marvel’s best stand-alone hero films. It is right behind The Winter Soldier and the original Iron Man for me. In a few years it may even eclipse those two as the distance and impact it has going forward is felt. I believe the cultural and racial themes of this film are well thought out, focused, bold, and sobering. To be perfectly honest I don’t feel comfortable writing about that aspect of the film in depth. I’m a 32 year old goofy white guy who is not a good enough writer to navigate that territory, plus I lack the experiences that would make my take worth reading. There are some incredible writers who have written on the overall cultural impact of (essentially) an all-black cast superhero film and I encourage all of you to seek those pieces out because they are worth your time. My review is going to focus on just how badass this movie is.

Top 10 Moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Thus Far!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 15th, 2018

Black Panther is debuting very soon and in 3 short months, we will witness Infinity War on the big screen, which is the culmination of all 18 Marvel movies that came before it. I love the Marvel movies, at a minimum they get how to entertain and present their characters in the most appealing way possible. I’m sure that Black Panther will have an incredible moment or two and without a doubt the spectacle that Infinity War HAS to be will present us with some memorable scenes. Until then I figured I would share my 10 Favorite Moments from the MCU so far.

4K UHD Review: ‘Wonder’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 8th, 2018

THE FILM

Back in 2012, author R.J. Palacio released her novel ‘Wonder‘, which caught on worldwide quickly and became one of the most heartfelt and dare I say it “wonderful” stories of recent memory. It was only a matter of time before it was optioned into a movie. Luckily Lionsgate picked it up where author/director Stephen Chbosky (Perks of Being a Wallflower) signed on to take on the task in adapting this fantastic story for the big screen. ‘Wonder‘ follows a young boy named Auggie (Jacob Tremblay) who was born with Treacher Collins syndrome, which is a genetic disorder that causes facial disfiguration at birth, which can cause problems with hearing, eyesight, and breathing.

4K UHD Review: ‘Jigsaw’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 16th, 2018

THE FILM

Wait, what? He’s back? He’s really back with his infamous contraptions that kill people? Of course he’s back, even after a seven year hiatus, which was the last time we watched the Saw franchise on the big screen. Jigsaw marks the 8th film in the series since 2004 and with an eight film combined budget of $77 million, the box office gross of all eight films is a hair-line under $1 billion. So if you think there will be more Saw films with more Tobin Bell, the answer is a hard “yes”. The Spierig Bros. (Undead, Predestination, Daybreakers) are in the director chairs this time around as they put Jigsaw/John Cramer (Bell) in the center of the story.

One of the most heart-warming movies of the year, ‘Wonder‘ is coming to 4K UHD, Blu-ray and Digital HD very soon. In fact, you’ll be able to watch the film digitally as soon as January 30th. Then on February 13th, you’ll be able to purchase the 4K UHD and Blu-ray Discs. Trust me, you’re going to want to his film in your collection. It’s that good. The 4K UHD Dis will feature Dolby Vision and HDR10 support, which is excellent. Bonus features include Audio Commentary, and quite a few behind the scenes featurettes on the making of the movie. I cannot wait for this one.

Dan Moran’s Top 12 Movies of 2017 Plus Extras!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 4th, 2018

I saw 75 movies this year and I still have 3-4 left to finish up over the next few weeks. I haven’t seen The Post, Call Me By Your Name, or Phantom Thread yet. Phantom Thread is the only regret I have but it doesn’t come out until mid-January and I like to finish my list before first week of January ends. A few special awards before my top 12.

4K UHD Review: ‘Batman Begins’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 2nd, 2018

THE FILM

Since 1989, we were thrilled to have Batman movies. In 1989, we received are first big budget Batman film from newcomer director at the time Tim Burton. It went onto be a box office sensation and spawned three more sequels, which became increasingly worse and silly. By the time the 4th film got around, it was more like watching a slapstick cartoon than anything good or resembling Batman. In fact, the franchise became a joke. Then came along Christopher Nolan who made his trilogy of Batman films, starting with ‘Batman Begins‘, which told a much darker and realistic side of the Dark Knight. The results were astounding on both critical and box office fronts.

Jana’s Best of 2017!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 1st, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

I know these “Best of 2017” lists should technically be published in 2017, but why would I start 2018 any differently than I lived the majority of my adult life: Procrastinating and underachieving. What can I say? That’s my wheelhouse.

For a year that put a spotlight on some of the shittiest behavior by some of the Hollywood elite, it was actually a good year for TV and movies. I didn’t limit myself in number because as I moved on with the brackets, I felt like I was making ‘Sophie’s Choice‘ on some of these, so they’re all getting in! I’m feeling my inner-Oprah here, You’ve made the list! You made the list! EVERYBODY made the list!! In order to spare myself any arguments, I’m stating up front that my picks for the “Best of 2017” are not edited in regards to scandal or hideous human behavior.

Film Review: ‘Justice League’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 17th, 2017

There are several things about Justice League that are good. I think the cast is terrific. Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck, Jason Momoa, and Ezra Miller are great in their roles.
