Hi everyone, Bryan here…

I recently had the pleasure to sit down with actress Hailee Steinfeld to discuss her latest film ‘Edge of Seventeen‘, which is a coming of age movie that is being compared to the best of John Hughes‘ movies. Currently, the film has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so be sure to catch this movie in theaters this weekend. Prior to this, Hailee starred in the Coen Bros. remake of ‘True Grit‘ with Jeff Bridges, ‘Ender’s Game‘, and ‘Pitch Perfect 2‘ amongst several others. We talked about working with the stellar cast of ‘Edge of Seventeen‘, some High School memories, and her favorite scenes from film. Don’t forget to check out her music too HERE.

Best Movies of 2015, According To Jana

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 30th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

Another year has come and gone and brought with it about a billion movies, some were total crap and a waste of time, but others…oh they were worth every bit of time I spent. Pre-movie hype, post-movie discussion, and the random hours I spent thinking about it in the shower or sitting at a stop-light. Having said that, this is my list of movies that 2015 blessed us with, and maybe a few the year cursed us with.

Film Review: ‘Jem and the Holograms’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 22nd, 2015

Taylor E., Here…

Jem-and-the-Holograms-thumb-600x348

We now live in an age where the Next Big Artist is being found online. Justin Bieber* was discovered on YouTube and being Vine Famous is now C-list enough to get you on Dancing With The Stars. It should then come as no surprise that the reimagining of ‘Jem and the Holograms‘ involves a viral video. Jerrica, being an overly shy singer-songwriter, records a song dressed in disguise as Jem. When her sister Kimber discovers the video on her camera, she secretly posts it to YouTube. The video goes viral and Jem is offered a record deal by THE Erica Raymond (Juliette Lewis) of Starlight Enterprises, which couldn’t have happened at a better time, since Jerrica’s aunt Bailey (Molly Ringwald) is about to lose their house. Jerrica accepts the offer, but only if her sisters get to come along as her band. Cue the makeover montage!

Film Review: ‘NightCrawler’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 29th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

K72A3451d.tif

It’s very rare to me when a film stays with me for weeks on end. It’s been more than a month and I still can’t stop thinking about Dan Gilroy’s directorial debut ‘Nightcrawler‘. It’s a smooth yet very suspenseful thriller about a friendless sociopath who decides one day he is going to start a career in freelance TV new reporting, where we see him succeed as well as go to the metaphorical “dark side”. This sociopath is played by the impressive Jake Gyllenhaal who (to put lightly) has major psychological issues. We’ve seen him play something similar before in ‘Enemy‘ and ‘Donnie Darko‘, but here, he’s on a whole different level. It’s easy for me to say that Jake Gyllenhaal plays the most frightening character in film in the last decade.

sacha-baron-cohens-grimsby-will-open-in-2015-156481-a-1392371260-470-75

Sacha Baron Cohen has been on the radar in the entertainment industry since the mid 90’s. It wasn’t until ‘Borat‘ that I learned he was the same guy that was in ‘Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby‘. I know, I know, I missed the whole ‘Da Ali G Show‘. However, I knew if I saw him in something I was going to laugh myself into unconsciousness due to lack of oxygen from that unfortunate, and rather obnoxious, wheezing laugh I get sometimes.

Film Review: ‘Jersey Boys’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 19th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

Film Review-Jersey Boys

You might think it’s quite odd that Clint Eastwood directed a musical this year with ‘Jersey Boys‘, which is an adaptation of the Broadway stage play that is currently the 13th longest running show in history based on the careers of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, but you’d be wrong. In fact, Eastwood is very big in the music scene and always has been. You remember the film ‘Honkytonk Man‘ and ‘Bird‘, don’t you, which were both about musicians. And you can add to this the eight films he wrote and composed the music for. My point is that Eastwood is a solid choice for this great musical adapted into a feature film.

Hi, Jana here,

Awesome news! The tag-team duo that brought us ‘Bridesmaids‘ is back! Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo are taking celluloid for another spin. ‘Bridesmaids‘ became a slightly unexpected hit on a global scale for being a female-driven comedy. The upcoming flick is going to team Wiig and Mumolo  as writers again, but they will also produce, star and Wiig is going to try her hand at directing the project which is going to be a first effort for the comedian. TriStar Productions is backing the production and they have described the film as the story of “best friends who find themselves in over their heads and out of their depths, which were, perhaps, not too deep to begin with.”  No release date has been set.

Hi kids, Jana here,

  Bibb County GA SHBP

If you’ve read much of what I’ve written before, I’ve led the band railing against movie remakes. Yeah, that’s me in the front with the baton and the megaphone. However, there are some films that it’s ok to remake. Doesn’t make it right, but it’s not one I’ll lose sleep over. The remake of ‘Point Break‘, ‘Roadhouse‘, ‘Ghost‘ and ‘Dirty Dancing‘ are all examples of films that do not need touched by anyone other than slight re-touching to make the colors more compatible with HD televisions. Basically anything Patrick Swayze was ever in should be kept sacred. I use ‘Swayze’ as a verb after all. No one ever gets their ass kicked, anymore – They get full on Swayzed. In short, don’t mess with the man’s films!!

There are some names that you instantly recognize if you’re a student of film, or just obsessed with it, like me. Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Steven Soderbergh are just a few. What do these names have in common? Sundance. Filmmakers converge on the famous Indie film festival in Park City, Utah, for the chance to move from someone making movies with your buddies to being paid to employ some of the best actors in the industry. Dreams come true and some leave in deafeat, yeah that was way too schmaltzy. From January 16-26 the world of entertainment turns its discerning and collective eye to more than 120 feature length submissions.

I never thought I’d write this sentence, but Arnold Schwarzenegger is currently in talks to star in the reboot of Troma’sToxic Avenger’ film. This project will be introduced to potential buys at Cannes this year of all places. I didn’t think Cannes would take any Troma film. But it looks like this re-imaging of ‘Toxic Avenger‘ will be a big budget project. Steve Pink is taking the reins of the film. Pink directed ‘Hot Tub Time Machine‘ and will direct the sequel. This is odd, but amazing news.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 3rd, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Screen Shot 2017-04-03 at 3.40.14 PM

THE FILM

Since the release of ‘The Force Awakens‘, Disney will be releasing a ‘Star Wars‘ film every year for the foreseeable future. Well, it’s been a year since ‘The Force Awakens‘, which means it’s time for another ‘Star Wars‘ film, and luckily for us, we get ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘. I’m so glad that Disney is allowing up and coming, young  filmmakers a chance to have a go at ‘Star Wars‘, because director Gareth Edwards (‘Monsters‘ and ‘Godzilla‘) has knocked it out of the park, even though there were some re-shoots with writer Tony Gilroy (‘Michael Clayton‘ and ‘The Bourne‘ films). This is the ‘Star Wars‘ film we have wanted for a long time, in that we get to see some characters do some truly amazing and badass things that we’ve never seen before, and a return to some of those classic set pieces and ships.

Film Review: ‘The Founder’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 20th, 2017

Beka P., here….

the-founder-movie-2016-trailer-michael-keaton

As a lawyer, one of the first things they teach you is to always put things in writing. As a criminal lawyer, one of the first things I tell people is never put things in writing. ‘The Founder‘ is a lesson in contracts and how as Roy Kroc says, “Contracts are like hearts, they were made to be broken.” This film explores the story of how McDonalds became more than just a local burger joint- exploding onto the map as a nationwide franchise. Quite honestly, it was darker than I expected, and cast a bit of a cloud on the French fried potato goodness that is Micky D’s, but I suppose that when you pull back the curtain and expose the inner workings of any organization, you are bound to find a few skeletons in the closet.

Film Review: ‘American Girl: Grace Stirs Up Success’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 15th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

THE FILM

Yet another ‘American Girl‘ film has been released under the name ‘Grace Stirs Up Success‘. If you’re unfamiliar with the ‘American Girl‘ franchise, you can read my previous hardcore action review of ‘Saige Paints the Sky‘. ‘American Girl‘ is basically a line of actual play dolls for girls ages 4-12. None of the films in this series have anything to do with a doll, but rather try and tell these young girls what life is really like on the outside once out of a federal prison, which brings us to ‘Grace Stirs Up Success‘.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a troubled, angsty teen gets in trouble and is sent off to live with their dad in middle-of-nowhere, USA. Once there, the teen develops an independent identity, meets a sparkly vampire, and Indian werewolf…ok, that last part might be inaccurate, but you get the idea. Bravetown doesn’t provide anything you haven’t seen in dozens of other movies, what sets it apart, however, is that it manages to rip off its predecessors in the most bland way possible.

Film Review: ‘Dolphin Tale 2’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 12th, 2014

Janet W., Here…

1396904201000-DOLPHIN-TALE-2-MOV-JY-3602--63352610

Dolphins are not fish…they are mammals.  Playful, passionate, and full of expression, dolphins have ways of letting you know what’s on their mind.  Perfectly timed faces full of water from a blowhole, varying pitches of speech, and solemn silences each have their own purpose and meaning.  Fish cannot easily do that.  Dolphin Tale 2 is a wondrous display of these characteristics.  Picking up where the Dolphin Tale left off, Winter (portrayed by the “real” Winter) still lives in Clearwater Marine Aquarium.  She is the main attraction and the aquarium has grown by leaps and bounds.  For those who have seen the first Dolphin Tale (don’t worry it won’t ruin the movie, if you haven’t), Winter’s first friend was Sawyer Nelson (Nathan Gamble).  Sawyer has learned a lot about marine life during his time with Winter and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.  So much so that he is invited to an educational high-seas adventure by a prestigious college.  Such an invitation would be a marine enthusiast’s dream, but it comes with a price.  Three months at sea, far from his friend, Winter, and the area.

Bryan’s Review of ‘Hotel Transylvania’!!!

Hi, Bryan Here….

‘Hotel Transylvania’ is a huge spectacle on the eyes.  With giant colorful monsters, swooping camera pans at every scene, and a somewhat decent voice cast, you’d think ‘Hotel Transylvania’ would be the perfect movie for all ages this Halloween.  However, ‘Hotel Transylvania’  relies more on the visual aspect with keeping little kids entertained to the fullest every second, that the story and characters get left buried underground.  With the other animated monster and zombie films that are out right now, this one ranks low on the list.
