Trailer for Norwegian Mockumentary ‘Troll Hunter’

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 1st, 2010

After seeing this one minute teaser, I quickly started to do research about this movie and came up only with the trailer.  I want to know more about this film.  I just love these types of movies.  Rather if it is in the horror genre like Cloverfield of Blair Witch or if it is in the comedy genre like Spinal Tap or Waiting For Guffman.  I just think there are so many possibilities with this certain type of film and Troll Hunter look like it will be BADASS.  I have no idea what to expect from it.

Below is the trailer.  This film will be on my radar.  Can’t wait to see it.

Scream Factory is releasing ‘Manhunter‘ in Collector’s Edition form on May 24th on Blu-ray with a ton of new extras. Do you remember ‘Manhunter’ from 1986? It had a hell of a cast and featured the character Hannibal Lektor for the first time on screen. Yes, even before he rose to superstardom in ‘Silence of the Lambs‘. This film also had a killer soundtrack as well. Below is the press release and all the info you will need on the release. Can’t wait for May 24th.

Film Review: ‘The Last Witch Hunter’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 22nd, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Last-Witch-Hunter-Starring-VIn-Diesel-Rose-Leslie-and-Elijah-Wood

Just in time for Halloween, comes the latest action-horror movie, starring Vin Diesel, called ‘The Last Witch Hunter‘. With a budget of $90 million, you’ll be puzzled to see where all that money went after watching this awkward and slow-paced movie. Director Breck Eisner tries to weave a horror movie with some action set pieces, but the dialogue and script is fair at best, and besides the first five minutes of the film and the last ten minutes, nothing really happens.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Mockingbird-Lance-Hunter-Agen

Fans of the hit Marvel series, ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ can rejoice that two of the strongest characters from the series, Barbara Morse, better known as Mockingbird and Lance Hunter are back in the prime position of carrying their own series, whether or not it will be a “spinoff” of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘ still remains to be seen, but Marvel’s ‘Most Wanted‘ is definitely a go for pilot. Whether or not fans do a lot of rejoicing having two fan favorites taken from Agents is definitely going to rub some fans the wrong way, while other will embrace it fully.

Guillermo del Toro has signed on to write and direct an animated picture for Dreamworks Animation called “Trollhunters”.  Now this is not to be confused with the upcoming mockumentary Norwegian film “Troll Hunter which you can find info about HERE.

Trollhunters is based on a forthcoming youth novel by del Toro.

Guillermo said in an interview, “ animation has caught his eye because he believes that during the next 10 years, the entertainment landscape will shift into a transmedia world — a confluence of movies, TV, books, video and online — and artists will need to be educated in all aspects of media.”

“Transmedia,” he said, “will not just be a buzz word.”

Anything by Del Toro, I am interested in.  This is one to keep your eye on.

Film Review: ‘Rampage’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 11th, 2018

There really isn’t any point in denying that Dwayne The Rock Johnson is the biggest movie star in Hollywood right now, but he might also be the best. Nobody, except early Will Smith, can star in, sell, and market a movie the way he can. His power to entertain audiences with ridiculous premises is undeniable. Rampage is stupid, big, and insane, but it’s also obnoxiously entertaining and a joy to watch.

I’ve got an “INCREDIBLE” update for you!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 23rd, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

The Incredibles‘ are making a comeback and Disney released character portraits in the most trendy, pop culture-ish way possible, as selfies matched with their artistic counter-part. Google’s Arts and Culture app has been the new driving force powering social media and everyone is doing it. I even tried to get a match on my dog, Duke, aka John Wayne, but there’s not recognition for pets, yet. Along with the images of the voice actors, we see stylized artwork of their on-screen persona, and it’s awesome to see anything coming from Disney Pixar about the upcoming sequel. But that’s not all they’ve given us. We get four new images, but we also get some plot details!

You never thought we’d get a crossover feature animated film of Batman and Scooby-Doo, did you? Well we have one now and I’m here to say that’s it’s quite a fun experience that combines both the DC Universe and the classic Scooby-Doo antics that we’ve grown to love. This marks the 30th Scooby-Doo film and brings back the whole ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold‘ cast back to the screen, which is the first time since 2011 when they went off the air with their hit TV show. On paper, or even the fun poster art of the film, you wouldn’t think these two worlds would mix well together, but when the two universes collide, its seems like they were always meant to be together and solve crimes together. They are the peanut butter and jelly of the animated world.

Jana’s Best of 2017!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 1st, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

I know these “Best of 2017” lists should technically be published in 2017, but why would I start 2018 any differently than I lived the majority of my adult life: Procrastinating and underachieving. What can I say? That’s my wheelhouse.

For a year that put a spotlight on some of the shittiest behavior by some of the Hollywood elite, it was actually a good year for TV and movies. I didn’t limit myself in number because as I moved on with the brackets, I felt like I was making ‘Sophie’s Choice‘ on some of these, so they’re all getting in! I’m feeling my inner-Oprah here, You’ve made the list! You made the list! EVERYBODY made the list!! In order to spare myself any arguments, I’m stating up front that my picks for the “Best of 2017” are not edited in regards to scandal or hideous human behavior.

Favorite Movies of 2017!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 27th, 2017

Was 2017 a great year for movies? Of course it was. There were some excellent films to be released in 2017. There were also some bad ones for sure, but the focus on this article are some of the Best films that stuck with me long after viewing. Most people will give you their Top 10 list, but this is no Top 10, because there are just so many movies that I loved and feel passionate about, that I find it difficult and unpleasing to rank them.

Instead, these are my favorite movies of 2017, which I hope you’ve seen already. If you haven’t yet, you’re in for a real treat and I can’t wait for you to see them. Some of these films are still in theaters, while some are on Netflix, 4K UHD, and Blu-ray, so you’ll be able to quickly see any of these if you haven’t. I watched over 270 movies that were released in 2017 and these are my absolute favorites. I hope you get to see all of these, because I know you’ll love them. In no particular order…..

Scooby Doo and Batman are coming to Blu-ray Together!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 7th, 2017

I’m gonna go ahead and say it. There won’t be a better film than this all year. On January 9th, 2018, Warner Bros. is releasing ‘Scooby-Doo & Batman: The Brave and the Bold‘ on Digital Streaming. How can Warner Bros. team up this duo? Well, the villains of the Batman universe have partnered up with the villains of the Scooby Doo universe to terrorize the city. Batman then decides to join the other detective agency of Mystery Inc with Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma to fight crime. There are so many scenarios I want to see played out here. I want to see Batman slap Fred. I want to see Velma and Daphne fight over Batman. I want to see Shaggy try to unmask Batman. I want to see Scooby wear a Bat-Dog costume. I want the Joker and Ghost Clown to torture civilians. I don’t think this is asking for too much.

Blu-ray Review: The Big Sick!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 27th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

THE FILM

The Film portion is written by Beka Perlstein:

If The Big Sick isn’t on your must see movie list, do yourself a favor and rewrite the list. This film is the real life love story of how actor/comedian Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley) met his girlfriend and (spoiler alert) now wife, Emily Gordon. It’s not another Fault in Our Stars or Me Before You, it’s so much more than a love sick story. Behind the romantic comedy model is a story about a Pakistani immigrant who is struggling with identity, relationships, family, career and religion. To put it simply- he’s just trying to figure out this thing we call life.

Film Review #2: Spider-Man: Homecoming!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 7th, 2017

Dan M., here….

Spider-Man: Homecoming is a really good “Marvel” (too lazy to explain all the Sony stuff) movie that is hopefully the breath of fresh air the MCU needs. It had much smaller stakes, much more realized supporting cast and World that they operated in, a good villain that made sense, and a finale that didn’t turn into a $45million CGI punching. If the future of the solo Marvel films is going to be smaller universe conflicts that are more narrowly focused like this and Ant-Man? I am here for it. Leave space to Guardians & Thor, the end of the World to the Avengers, and weird dimensions to Doctor Strange. Give me low level criminals that Spider-Man has to fight before a math test to break those huge films up any day of the week.

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Screen Shot 2017-02-20 at 10.57.37 AM

Some people love his films. Some hate his films. No matter which side of the spectrum you’re on, you have to agree that every one of Terrence Malick’s films look exquisitely beautiful. With movies like ‘Tree of Life‘, ‘Knight of Cups‘, ‘The Thin Red Line‘, ‘Badlands‘, and ‘Days of Heaven‘, you can’t help but become entranced in the story, characters, and visual spectacle of Malick’s filmmaking process. His past few films have mostly shown a variety of characters who rarely say anything on screen, but instead narrate the movie as it goes along, giving a better visual masterpiece of cinema than a dialogue driven movie.

The end of 2016 is here, which means everyone’s Top 10 list is out already or getting ready to be released. I’m not going to do a Top 10 in order again this year, because there are just so many amazing films I feel so passionate about, that it is difficult to rank them. If you think this is a weak year of films, then you are surely mistaken. I will say that most of the big budget blockbusters this year were duds, but the indie films were nothing short of amazing. So below is the list of films that I truly loved this year. These films will be ones that I watch over and over again, and you should to. I watched 254 films that were released this year (Yes, I counted) and survived to tell the tale. As always, please let me know if any of your favorite films made my list. Enjoy!

You can CLICK the titles of each movie where you can purchase the Blu-rays too. Hooray!

Rarely though, horror films tend to stick in my mind long after viewing that have a lingering haunting effect that will cause me to sweat or choose not to walk down a dark hallway. I’m happy to say that the fresh and original horror film ‘The Autopsy of Jane Doe‘ will terrify me for the coming weeks. Directed by André Øvredal (Trollhunter), and starring Emile Hirsch and Brian Cox, this horror masterpiece goes down some dark alleys while a father and son try to reconnect after a death in the family.

Alright, folks. Today, we’re going to brew up a little horror/thriller action. Let’s take a little Leatherface, mostly his hobbies and the essence of a sewing fetish. Add in quite a few heavy doses of The Hills Have Eyes – you know, the whole booby trap (THAT’S WHAT I SAY!) bit? For the final part of the mix, we’re going to sample a little bit of Mick from Wolf Creek lore. Pour it into a bowl once churned together, and we have ourselves a nice little Carnage Park.

I went into ‘Trumbo’ expecting a slightly dull, somewhat stoic look at Hollywood’s past transgressions during the Communist scare at the height of the cold war. However, the movie ‘Trumbo‘ I watched, was interesting, heartwarming, infuriating, lovely and, surprisingly very funny.  I may have trouble writing this review because there are only so many ways to say “it’s so, SO good. He’s one of the first movie stars to take my breath away in ‘The Goonies‘ and he’s still going strong! Love this man! I don’t understand why Wizard World did not use the Grand Ballroom like they did last year, the Assembly Hall worked out well for some talent, but Astin deserved the big room! It was bursting beyond capacity while we waited for him to take the stage and he was funny, sincere and everyone’s best friend, just like we all expected him to be. He slipped in and out of character reciting lines as Samwise, giving Doug’s legendary lisp some good use from ‘50 First Dates‘, he was amazing to see and worth the price of admission on his own.

The official plan to release the ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘ trailer this coming Monday, but some dude with a camera phone spoiled those plans and put their shaky, grainy version with Portuguese subtitles out into the interwebs.  Zack Snyder reacted by giving the fans what we want, a peek at the trailer.

Hey guys, Jana here,

biggamemovieposter_large

I have to admit, ‘Big Game‘ is a film that totally flew under my radar. I didn’t know this one was in the works and based on the poster, I was seriously thinking it’s going to be some kind of Sharknado-ish piece of film. Maybe it’s because Air Force One resembles a giant shark, you know, if it had teeth. It’s a really wonky pic of Samuel L. Jackson, too, really doesn’t showcase the Jackson we typically see. Anyhow, onto the film!

Film Review: ‘Dead Snow 2’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 29th, 2014

Paul N., Here…

dead_snow_01

Some films are destined to become Oscar fodder. They are created, carefully crafted, to become instant nominees for the next award show. From the concept and design to the casting choices, nothing is left to chance. The same could be said for cult classics. Some films achieve cult status by being so horrendously awful that they circle around the giant, invisible wheel of crap back around to becoming great again. Still, other films seem as destined for cult status as those reaching for the awards. There is nothing stellar in these films. The acting won’t move you. The set designs often look like they were conceived on used McDonald’s napkins hours before the cameras start rolling. The concepts are the stuff of giving a teenager mountains of sugar, blindfolding them, spinning them around, and having them throw darts at a board full of random plot devices. Dead Snow 2 is such a film. You might think this to be a bad thing, but when such an endeavor is crafted with the same love and care as the Oscar contenders, something stupidly magical happens and cult status is achieved.

Vinnie Jones Co-stars On The CW’s ‘Arrow’!!!

Hey guys, Jana here,

Arrow

Where Marvel-based comic book films have the leading edge over DC-based films, with character introduction and cross-branding, especially  when you take into the post-film stinger that we’ve all learned to wait for, but DC does have a strong point over Marvel with TV serials. I know, Marvel is getting into the small-screen game, too, but it’s no match for DC’s proven titles that have been drawing in crowds from the beginning. Where Marvel didn’t get into the series racket until 1974 with ‘Super Spidey Stories‘ that aired during small segments of ‘The Electric Company‘, DC began in the 1950’s and has kept producing through the decades.

If you haven’t watched ‘Hemlock Grove‘, yet, you’re missing out…or you just don’t have Netflix, either way, you’re missing out!  This series grips you from the first scene and it’s not let up in the two seasons it’s been exclusively on Netflix. In an unsurprising turn, the VOD company has renewed the original series for a 10-episode third season that’s heading out way in 2015.

The twice Emmy nominated thriller has some pretty decent star-power filling out its ranks. Famke Janssen, Bill Skarsgard and Dougray Scott are all featured. Janssen, best known from her days as Jean Grey in the original ‘X-Men‘ franchise, but has come into her own, shall we say, inner-bitch. Her characters are always underhanded, evil or they just want to eat children as in the case of ‘Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters‘ Oh! Don’t forget her absolute lack of concern for her daughter in ‘Taken‘. I adore Liam Neeson, but that movie-wife wanted to carry the testicles of every man she hooked up with in her perfect designer bag.

FILM REVIEW: ‘RIGOR MORTIS’!!

There’s a popular brand of snack food on the market called Munchies. It contains pretzels, cheese curls, and two different kinds of chips. I like to believe that all four of these individual items are produced in the same giant factory, and at the end of the workday, whatever’s left on the floor gets swept up and bagged and voilà. A brand new product is born.

Rigor Mortis, a Hong Kong horror film hitting theaters on June 6th, is the cinematic equivalent of Munchies. Make no mistake; though it may contain things that you like, it’s largely made up of leftovers. Read the rest of this entry »

One of the most recognized artists of a generation whose artwork has sparked debate, protests, and change is still very alive and well. Coming across as the horror version of Michelangelo, Ralph Steadman is still producing great artwork and has allowed a husband-wife producer/director team to film a documentary on his life and art. Steadman is now 77 years old and lives with his family in a nice villa in the countryside of England where his fellow friend Johnny Depp came over and played the role of interviewer during this 80 minute well-edited documentary.

Hello, Jana here,

_batman_vs__superman___world_s_finest__poster_by_nieoein-d6jkswg

It looks like Warner Bros. is banking pretty heavily on Zack Snyder’sBatman vs. Superman‘ release, with a so-so reception of last year’s ‘Man of Steel‘, they gave him a sequel. Not only is he doing a sequel, he cast Ben Affleck as Batman which has drawn cheers and jeers, mostly jeers, from the public since then. So it seems a little ridiculous to me that Warner Bros. has already announced a ‘Justice League‘ movie helmed by Snyder. I’m not saying a ‘Justice League‘ film isn’t a good idea, I just don’t think building the DC Universe off of the ‘Man of Steel‘ platform is the way to do it.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead To Be ‘Exposed’?

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 11th, 2014

Hello Jana here,

If you’re shopping for the cast to be in a pilot of a new series, you can rarely get better than a well-known actor, with a dedicated fan base, to play the lead. This is what director Patty Jenkins was thinking when she courted Mary Elizabeth Winstead for the lead in ABC’s new drama series ‘Exposed‘. The Top 20 Vampire Movies Of All Time!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 20th, 2013

I love making lists. Grocery lists. Bucket lists. Holiday lists. Favorite movie lists. Favorite VAMPIRE movie lists. I bet that got your attention, didn’t it? This is MY list of the top 20 Vampire movies ever made. Why did I point out that it was MY list? Easy. So you read this knowing it wasn’t an Academy vote that got a movie on this list. No one paid me to promote their movie. However, I’m NOT against this, just to be clear. Why spend time putting movies in a list? Maybe it satisfies some Freudian lack of paternal affection I suffered as a child. But the real answer is, “Why wouldn’t I make a list as awesome as this?”

Film Review: Suzanne reviews “Riddick”

by Woozie on Sep 6th, 2013

Hi, Suzanne L., Here….

Screen shot 2013-09-05 at 10.58.20 PM

Keeping an open mind about the third installment of movies featuring Richard B. Riddick (Vin Diesel) was admittedly difficult. After enjoying 2000’s Pitch Black, the second movie, Chronicles of Riddickdid not live up to the expectations and the budget it was given. Within the first 15 minutes of the latest movie, Riddickmy open mind was wasted. The newest version rehashes old story lines, needs some serious editing, and cannot decide if it is going for cult-kitsch horror or serious action drama.

Film Review: ‘Identity Thief’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 7th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

identity-thief-movie

There hasn’t been a decent comedic road trip movie since Todd Phillips‘ 2000 comedy, ‘Road Trip‘. And with the recent ‘Guilt Trip‘ flick not performing well, I had some hope that ‘Identity Thief‘ would spark another engine in the comedy genre. Unfortunately, due to the scripted laughs, and unlikable main character, it falls it bit flat. I have no doubt though that the talented Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman will bring in big numbers at the box office, however the word will spread quickly that ‘Identity Thief’ is forgettable and ultimately unsatisfying.

Hi, Bryan Here….

A-Haunted-House-585x370

I’ll be honest, I was dreading going to see this film, despite its trailer looking decent.  I mean, how often have we not laughed at recent comedy films with a Wayans brother attached to it.  Back several years ago, I’m sure we would all agree they were making some of the funniest films out there, but as of recent, their movies have been lacking.    But I’m very happy to say that after I walked out of the theater from viewing ‘A Haunted House‘, my cheeks  hurt from laughter.  Yes, it’s silly, stupid, and insane, but man, I laughed from start to finish, which is rare. I can easily say that ‘A Haunted House‘ is the funniest film I’ve seen since ‘Ted‘.

Bryan’s Review of ‘Dark Shadows’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 9th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here…

The Dukes of Hazzard, The Addams Family, and the A-Team are all television shows that have become feature films over the past several years. The latest television show to be remade on the big screen is the 60’s television series, Dark Shadows. With its dark humor, strange characters, and gothic set pieces, how could off-beat director Tim Burton resist?  Unfortunately, Dark Shadows proves yet again that even though you have an expansive budget, amazing set pieces, and good actors, you don’t necessarily get a quality film.  Dark Shadows fails to humanize any of the characters besides Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp), and although it started off as a fun quirky film, it never improved or advanced after the first ten minutes.

Hi Bryan Here…..

The 84th annual Academy Award nominations are in.  There are a couple of surprises that I was very happy to see on here and tons of disappointment.  It looks like the Academy went with 9 Best Picture noms this year rather than 10.  They also only went with 3 noms for make up which I can think of others, and only two for original song.  Was this a time issue, so that the event would be over on time for once rather than have all 5 songs being sung?  I don’t like it, but that’s how it is this year.  Below you will see each category with my thoughts.  Enjoy.

Seems like most of the really important music to come out of the 20th Century was very topical in nature, songs that reflected what was happening in life and society at that time.

Take one of Bob Dylan’s early songs, “The Times They Are A-Changing”, Woody Guthrie’s “Dust Bowl Ballads” and The Weavers’ rendition of “What Side Are You On,” a song originally written for the United Mine Workers Union in Kentucky in the early 1930s, shifted slightly to bring attention to the growing fears of Communism and McCarthyism in the 1950s. All of these songs were powerful then and still very much are today, as well as being important documents of the American fabric of history, how the music has shaped our people as a country, and how change in our society has been brought through by the platform of music. The exact same can be said of John Lennon and his Plastic Ono Band’s “Power To The People” song, written and released in 1971. Read the rest of this entry »
