Guess Which Coen Bros. Film Is Becoming a Series?!?!?

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 24th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

FX has just inked a deal with the Coen Bros. to bring ‘Fargo’ to series.  This will be an hour-long comedy drama loosely based on the Coen’s comedy-drama film from 1996, which won tons of awards according to Deadline.  The Coen Bros. will be executive producers and be written by Noah Hawley.

Hi Bryan Here….

Ethan Coen and Joel Coen are set to executive produce an hourlong single-camera comedy for Fox, which the two co-created with another feature writer, Phil Johnston (Cedar Rapids). The project, titled HarveKarbo, has received a script commitment with significant penalty from Fox.  How cool is this.  I wonder how hands on the Coens will be on this.

Hi Bryan Here…

Several years ago, the Coen Bros. wrote a script for a remake of “Gambit”.  As of right now, they are not attached in any way, shape, or form to this film, other than their initial script they wrote.  However they already have a director to helm this project which is Michael Hoffman.  He directed the amazing film, “The Station Agent”.

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 24th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here…

The people over at MULLER, have created an info graphic of every Coen Bros. film and have related all the characters to one another.  It is quite the masterpiece.  Would love this as a poster.  After looking at the COENFOGRAPHIC, I realized the world needs more Garth Pancake.

Coen Bros. Trailer for their New Film “True Grit”

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 27th, 2010

This trailer looks fantastic.  The Coen Bros. have re-made a great western movie that starred John Wayne called True Grit.  It is set to star Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin.  I cannot wait to see this new Coen gem.  Watch the trailer below.

Hey guys, Jana here,

R260144398

Brothers Joel and Ethan Coen, writing and directing team that have amassed an immense following for films that are synonymous only by how off-center they are, have targeted their next project now that ‘Hail Caesar!‘ is on the back-legs of it’s journey in the production phase.

Hey guys, Jana here,

The-Coen-brothers-007

When we’re talking Hollywood, or just about movies in general and someone mentions the Coen’s. Everyone gets a different image in their heads. Some immediately think of Nicolas Cage‘s creepy porn-stache in ‘Raising Arizona‘, others think of the twangy song made popular in ‘O Brother Where Art Thou?‘ (which is currently on my iPod). Still others think of ‘The Dude’ in ‘The Big Lebowski‘.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Sun_Earth_Moon

I guess someone at Warner Bros. really liked the Coen Bros. The Odyssey‘ adaptation, which was ‘O’ Brother Where Art Thou‘, and thought “Let’s do the complete opposite of that”, meaning instead of having it old-timey, let’s make set in the future and in space.  That’s how I pictured it going down when I heard that Warner Bros. is moving forward with a new adaptation that has Homer’s Odyssey set in outer space.

Streep + Hanks + Spielberg = ‘The Post’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 8th, 2017

The first trailer and poster for the film ‘The Post‘ is standing straight up. It’s a big deal, because it has Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep in the lead roles with Steven Spielberg in the director’s chair. That’s a powerhouse right there. The film will release on December 22nd, just in time for the holidays, but really, they want to get it in for Oscar consideration. The film releases everywhere next year on January 12. In addition to Hanks and Streep, the film stars Alison Brie, Carrie Coon, David Cross, Bruce Greenwood, Tracy Letts, Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Paulson, Jesse Plemons, Matthew Rhys, Michael Stuhlbarg, Bradley Whitford, and Zach Woods.

This is definitely on my radar now. Jeff Bridges and Chris Hemsworth, meaning The Dude and Thor are most likely going to star in a new film called Bad Times at the El Royale, which will be directed by Drew Goddard and released by 20th Century Fox. Despite the awesome two actors and the cool title, filmmaker Drew Goddard is one to watch for sure.

Hailee Steinfeld Interview for ‘Edge of Seventeen’!

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

I recently had the pleasure to sit down with actress Hailee Steinfeld to discuss her latest film ‘Edge of Seventeen‘, which is a coming of age movie that is being compared to the best of John Hughes‘ movies. Currently, the film has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so be sure to catch this movie in theaters this weekend. Prior to this, Hailee starred in the Coen Bros. remake of ‘True Grit‘ with Jeff Bridges, ‘Ender’s Game‘, and ‘Pitch Perfect 2‘ amongst several others. We talked about working with the stellar cast of ‘Edge of Seventeen‘, some High School memories, and her favorite scenes from film. Don’t forget to check out her music too HERE.

Sacha Baron Cohen takes on ‘Mandrake the Magician’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 7th, 2016
Mandrake

Sacha Baron Cohen who brought Borat to life has a new trick up his sleeve. He will be starring in ‘Mandrake the Magician‘ for Warner Bros., which is an adaptation off the old comic strip. Etan Cohen (not of the Coen Bros.), but of ‘Get Hard‘ and ‘Tropic Thunder‘ fame will direct the film. This project does not currently have a finished script and no other actors have been cast yet, but I suspect these announcements will come soon enough.

Your First Look at ‘The Magnificent Seven’ Remake!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 19th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

the_magnificent_seven_70101

I can’t tell you how excited I am for this remake of ‘The Magnificent Seven‘. I’ve a huge fan of westerns. I wish there was more out there. luckily Quentin Tarantino and The Coen Bros. are making westerns still. You can add to that list Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), who is remaking the 1960 film that starred Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen.

Film Review: ‘Hail, Caesar!”

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 3rd, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

hail-caesar-josh-brolin

It’s always a good time when the Coen Bros. have a new movie in theaters. Film after film, the Coen Bros. have not only told bizarre, funny, violent, musical stories, but have conjured up some of the best characters in movie history. Their uncanny talent for telling stories on film is unrivaled with each movie they make. Their latest endeavor tackles the early years of Hollywood, specifically the year 1951, in a film called ‘Hail, Caesar!‘ that has an A-List cast of Coen regulars and newcomers. Even though the posters and trailers show this A-List cast throughout, the film follows one man, and that is Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin), based on the real life Mannix who was a big time producer and  “fixer” at MGM.

Film Review: ‘Bridge of Spies’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 14th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

‘Bridge of Spies’ by DreamWorks Studios.

The year 2015 gives us yet another Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg movie called ‘Bridge of Spies‘ with an added bonus of the Coen Bros. serving as co-writers. Now with a cast and crew like this, I expect something that would live on forever and win all the awards come award season. That’s not really the case here though, as Spielberg’s recent directorial efforts have been lacking a bit. I’m not saying they’re bad, I’m just saying that ‘War Horse‘ and ‘Lincoln‘ were long, slow, dreary period pieces with no real momentum, despite some awards and critical acclaim.

Film Review: ‘Get Hard’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 26th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

get-hard-hart-ferrell-2

Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart have teamed up together for their latest comedy project called ‘Get Hard‘ with enough double entendres for two movies. There are a couple of similarities from ‘Trading Places‘ and ‘Nothing To Lose‘ here in ‘Get Hard‘, but nothing really seems genuine or charming enough to remember this film much beyond two minutes after viewing it. Etan Cohen (not to be confused of the Coen Bros.) steps into the director’s seat for the first time, but has written screenplays such as ‘Men In Black III‘, ‘Tropic Thunder‘, and ‘Idiocracy‘. Clearly, he has some writing talent, but with ‘Get Hard‘, it seems like he just let Ferrell and Hart do their own thing, which can be outrageously funny at times, but can also run off on long tangents, which often happens with this movie.

I knew there would be a day where we would have another ‘Evil Dead‘ and ‘Army of Darkness‘ project, starring Bruce ‘man-god’ Campbell, which is for sure happening. Read about that story HERE. But I also knew there would be a glorious day where America’s finest actor would get the opportunity to play the President of the United States. Season 2 of ‘Fargo‘ is gearing up to start filming soon for FX, and rest assured, I can’t wait. The first season, which was based on The Coen Bros. Oscar winning film in the 90s was excellent. The first season starred Martin Freeman, Billy Bob Thorton, Colin Hanks, and Allison Tolman.

Film Review: ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 17th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

inside-llewyn-davis-oscar-isaac

The Coen Bros. have knocked it out of the park yet again with their latest film ‘Inside Llewyn Davis‘. Although, I don’t think this will have the big box office draw that ‘O Brother Where Art Thou?‘ or ‘No Country For Old Men‘ had, but I expect people to be talking about this film for months to come and singing the impressive soundtrack, which was produced by T Bone Burnett. In the scale of things, this is a very small film set in the New York folk music scene in the early 60s. In true Coen Bros. fashion, the mood is darkly funny, and follows a man, who tries to find himself later in life through his music. I can’t recommend this film enough.

TOP 133 FILMS OF THE LAST DECADE (#100 – #85)

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 4th, 2010

Here we are in the Top 100 films of the last decade.  There are some great titles on here.  Enjoy.  As usual, there is the movie title name along with the date it was released, a mini review/memory of the film and a link that takes you to AMAZON where you can purchase the flick for a great price.

100_ Signs – August 2, 2002

I really enjoyed this Alien film from M. Night.  Total Hitchcockian throughout.  That scene with the alien stuck in the pantry of and Mel Gibson tries to get a glimpse of it with the  reflection of a butcher knife is so tense.  If aliens do come to Earth, hopefully they are not hostile.  A very good solid alien film.  Very tense.

99_ Garden State – July 28, 2004

Zach Braff shows the world he is a very talented director, not just a comedic tv actor.  This film has tons of heart and soul in it.  You really feel for the characters. Nothing is forced and it moves along nicely.  Natalie Portman is so lovely in this film. The soundtrack is one of the best of the decade as well. Go Shins.  I wish more films were like this. I look forward to more directorial efforts from Braff.

98_ A Serious Man – October 2, 2009

The latest film from The Coen Bros.  A very dark comedy.  The story follows a Jewish man who has a family, a job, and everything else but respect.  Everyone shits on him.  I can say that if you are NOT jewish or you do not have any jewish friends then you most likely wont get a lot of the film, but this film is hilarious.  This is suppose to be the Coen Bros. Biopic piece about themselves growing up.  I can relate.  Pretty funny.  A must see.

97_ Dawn of the Dead – March 19, 2004

The only complaint I had about this film is that I wish it wasn’t called Dawn of the Dead, which tells people it is a remake of the Romero classic.  It is not, although same story line in a way, but no.  This zombie thriller is BALLS TO THE WALL awesome.  It has got some of the best deaths, chills, and survival scenarios ever.  The scene where they shoot zombies that look like famous people is priceless.  Love this film.  Go James Gunn and Zach Snyder.  Some of the best head shots in cinema history.

96_ Match Point – January 20, 2006

Another Woody Allen film.  This marks the first in a set of films that Woody filmed in England.  This certainly does not play out like a typical Woody Allen film.  It is not funny whatsoever.  It is a serious drama.  So well played out and acted and directed and written.  Everything really.  This film follows a young man who meets a girl from a wealthy family.  The family takes him in as one of their own, buying him and their daughter a house and getting him the job of a lifetime.  This guy has a long affair with the beautiful Scarlett Johanssen.  When our main character wants to break off the affair he does so by murder.  What a film.  A must see.

95_ Hard Candy – April 14, 2006

What a brutal film this was.  A young Ellen Paige is the star in this film.  I literally had the flop sweats when I saw this in the theatre because I was so tense.  Wheww.  Just thinking about it gives me shivers.  Tons of twists and turns in this film. I do not want to give anything away, but seriously….see this film.  It will make you sweat.

94_ Super Troopers – February 16, 2001

Broken Lizards first feature film hit the jackpot and changed our lives forever with the immediate cult icon Officer Rod Farva.  This film follows the Highway patrol team and their hilarious antics with civilians.  People still today quote this film and will for some time.  I remember laughing out loud in the theatre for fifteen minutes straight at the biker line.  If you like comedy, then get off your ass and see this film if you have not already.  You will love it.

93_ Best In Show – September 29, 2000

A wonderful mockumentary from Chris Guest about Dog Shows and the people who take their dogs there.  We all know these types of people.  Dog People.  And it is all sorts of funny to watch all of their worlds crumble.  Oh the nut rant is prime.  This is dry humor at its best and your gut will hurt from all the laughter throughout the film. Stellar performaces all around.  More please.

92_ Fahrenheit 9/11 – June 23, 2004

An amazing documentary about the 9/11 attacks and the events leading up to it and all the questions we had about it.  We just didn’t know the truth, but we do now, and it was not pretty.  Michael Moore was the first to show us the truth on this.  This documentary will anger you and make you laugh and cry.  This is what I think is the start of the fall of George W. Bush.  You see who he really is in this film.  Go M.M.

91_ Black Snake Moan – March 2, 2007

I really did enjoy this little film.  I believe this film was loosely based on the great blues legend R.L. Burnside’s life.  It definitely has the great music to back it up.  Sam Jackson plays a old genuine God Fearing man who comes across a beaten up tramp played by the gorgeous Christina Ricci and takes her in to his home to get her well.  She was left for dead.  She gets all better and Sam Jackson chains her to his heater and he aims to cure her of her wickedness and make her a better person.  It is really good.  See it.

90_ Grindhouse – April 6, 2007

Oh yes. Tarantino and Rodriguez pay homage to the 70’s grindhouse experience by making a double feature of badassery, exploitation, and violence.  An allstar cast in both films.  One film deals with zombies and the other film deals with a crazed killer in a kick ass car.  The soundtrack is out of this world.  If you want to get a group of your friends together and pound a ton of beer and eat tons of junk food, then put this double feature on and enjoy the hell out of it.  So much fun.  I look forward to another double feature in the future from these two brilliant filmmakers.  Thank you for giving me this pleasure.

88_ Thirst – July 31, 2009

A really fantastic Korean Vampire film from the director of OLDBOY.  I like this one so much for its way of showing you every aspect of being a vampire and the guilt it causes and your need to feed.  More vampire films like this.  This director is amazing.  Not too much gore but just enough.

87_ Burn After Reading – September 12, 2008

I loved this Coen Brothers comedy.  Not a lot of people did.  It grows on you.  It is a comedy dram about the US government.  Starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Frances McDormand, Richard Jenkins, and John Malkovich.  If you liked Big Lebowski, you will like this film.  Tons of laughs.

86_ Night Watch – February 17, 2006

The first film in this Russion Horror trilogy.  This film is pretty epic and I believe is the biggest budget film Russia has ever done.  There are shape shifters, ghosts, murders, robots, monsters, vampires and much much more.  The visuals are stunning.  I highly recommend these films.  Classic Good vs. Evil here.

85_ Sin City – April 1, 2005

Finally the comic book of hardcore comes to the big screen.  I love these comics and the fact that Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino brought in Frank Miller to make this shows me just how brilliant they are in filmmaking.  Pretty much shot for shot and the same dialogue as the comic.  It is beautiful.  I love this modern Noir style.  Mickey Rourke as Marv is genius.  This is gruesome, funny and action packed.  Brittany Murphy does a stellar job in this too.  Cannot wait for the rest of the comics in comic book form.
