Summer time means a million things to different people, but some things we can all agree on. Cook outs, swimming, catching lightning bugs, camping and baseball. It’s just as pure as mom’s apple pie and the star spangled banner and every spring, a new season swings into action and a new hope is born for your team to be a contender and play through October. The national past time has been the basis for a lot of movies and I’m making some sense of them all with my Top 10 favorite baseball movies.

Dominic West and Guy Pearce Join ‘Genius’!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Sep 26th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

There has already been some talk about a new biopic of sorts based on the life of Scribner’s iconic editor Max Perkins. Perkins worked with such literary notables as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe and Ernest Hemmingway. In hearing tales of how these respected authors worked, the amount of difficulty friends and family had with some, I can only imagine the set of balls it would take to be the one forced with fact-checking, making corrections and offering changes in whole to the manuscripts. The flip-side of the downfalls to the job is that the editor is allowed to nurture and encourage talent in it’s various forms. This is precisely what Perkins did, and what will pique the curiosity of viewers the world over.

Hi Bryan Here…..

‘Cannonball Run’ is most certainly an acquired taste.  Much like a fine scotch.  It’s not for everyone.  If you’re a fan of those late 70’s early 80’s silly goofball comedies, than ‘Cannonball Run’  is the movie for you.  However, if you aren’t, then this movie will be like nails on a chalkboard.  I will say that it has an amazing cast with the likes of; Burt Reynolds, Farrah Fawcett, Dom Deluise, Roger Moore, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Jackie Chan, Adrienne Barbeau, and Jamie Farr to name a few.  This i movie is a lot of fun if you’re into this sort of thing, and my guess is that like myself, you have seen this over a dozen times.  ‘Cannonball Run’  is a zany film to have fun with.

Bryan Has A Ball With Machete (Machete Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 5th, 2010

Just a warning before you read this review.  This review has a few minor spoilers in it so stop reading if you do not want to know anything about “Machete”.

Ever since Grindhouse was released and the world was given the ever so small glimpse of “Machete”, I knew I wanted to  see it as quickly as possible.  After hearing about the casting decisions, I wanted even more to see this film with Robert De Niro, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Segal, Jeff Fahey, Jessica Alba, and Don Johnson lending themselves to this “fun as hell film.

Now I really enjoy most the films of Robert Rodriguez including: El Mariachi, Desperado, Sin City, Dusk Till Dawn, and his segment of Four Rooms, but I really do not care for Once Upon a Time in Mexico, or the Spy Kids films, Sharkboy, or Shorts all that much.  So I was just a tad bit uneasy that “Machete” would fall into the latter category of films I did not like.  Well safe to say, that “Machete” falls into the films I love.

It’s time of release has been coincided with Sylvester Stallone’s “The Expendables”.  Now Sly made Expendables with trying to make it realistic and true to nature whereas “Machete” is far from that.  It is a work of complete off the wall awesomeness and far from reality which makes it that much better.

Now you should know that “Machete” has balls to the wall gore throughout the film and naked women.  One of those naked ladies is Lindsay Lohan.  But you will get to see tons of decapitations, bloody head shots, tons of entrails, amputations, and a gigantic heap of machete kills.  Even at one point “Machete” guts an evil doer and pulls out his intestines and jumps out the 4th story hospital window and swings into the 3rd story window on the intestines.  That was an “OHMYGOD!”  and there are plenty of those.

Danny Trejo was born to play this role.  He moves through each frame with such a cool swagger that it looks like the whole film was shot in slow motion.  Trejo just owns this movie.  And his surrounding supporting cast is just as good.

Steven Segal plays the evil man which is out of the ordinary for Segal, but Segal plays this role so easily and it makes me wonder, why he hasn’t been a horrible villain more often.  He is great as a villain.  I must say that Segal’s death is one of the best and funniest deaths I have ever seen in a film.  It made me laugh hysterically.

Cheech Marin well is Cheech Marin and has the best dialogue exchange with Trejo in the entire film.  Cheech is just a great character actor and it shows along with Fahey’s evil republican role.  They just do such a great job of it.

Now what would a Rodriguez film be without the us of make-up artist legend Tom Savini.  Yes.  Savini might have the best cameo roles ever.  Right up there with Bill Murray in Zombieland.  You might remember Savini as “Sex Machine” from Dusk Till Dawn.  The character with the gun attached to his privates.  Well Savini in this film plays “Osiris”.  A very skilled hardcore hitman.  Every scene with “Osiris” is gold.  Let us hope they make a spin-off movie of “Osiris” or at least a sequel to “Machete”.

This film’s reason is to make an excellent exploitation or should I say “Mex-ploitation” film that takes one hardcore badass seek his vengeance and justice through the evil people of the world.  Simple as that.

Loved it and am looking forward to more.

Film Review: ‘Maze Runner: Scorch Trials’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 16th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

THE SCORCH TRIALS

A year later, we have the sequel to the popular young adult novel series ‘The Maze Runner‘ with ‘The Scorch Trials‘. in my previous discussion about the first film, first time director Wes Ball certainly knew how to film and construct some excellent action sequences that were highly suspenseful and kept the adrenaline flowing like vicious rapids. That being said, the first film had its issues with pacing and dialogue, which is the same problem with the sequel.

Maze Runner‘ tapped into the young adult audience craving post-apocalyptic survival tales that ‘The Hunger Games‘ proved was a highly profitable vehicle. The story came from a set of novels by James Dashner and adapted by T.S. Nowlin and directed by Wes Ball. I love that they are carrying the same creative team throughout the films, so far.

Film Review: ‘The Maze Runner’!!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

To end the summer and start the fall season, we have yet another Young Adult film adaptation from James Dashner’s book series called ‘The Maze- Runner‘. Like the young adult movies to come out before this one such as ‘The Giver‘, ‘Divergent‘, and even ‘The Hunger Games‘, it all takes place in the a futuristic society where Earth is mostly in ruins. And there is one person who might be able to set things straight and save a bunch people and bring peace. ‘The Maze-Runner‘ is no different when it comes to these plot points.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Commuter’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 1st, 2018

THE FILM

(This film portion was written by Fernando Martinez)

SOMEONE PLEASE STOP TAKING LIAM NEESON’S FAMILY!!! Ok, so maybe ‘The Commuter‘ isn’t so much about having his family ‘Taken’, but they get threatened to get taken, and that’s close enough.

So “The Commuter” is here simply to prove that Liam Neeson is still an action hero, and to be fair, he is probably our best action hero.  At age 65, he’s doing stuff that Tom Cruise wishes he could have done in his 30’s.  Actually, this felt like a role that was written for Tom Cruise until someone realized that Tom Cruise is box office poison but everyone loves Liam Neeson probably because of Love Actually.

Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #18!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 24th, 2018

Freddy Krueger has become a household name since he debuted in A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. The bastard son of 100 maniacs hasn’t only scared us, but has made us laugh and given us brilliant, yet cheesy one-liners over the years. When compared to the likes of other movie killers like Jason Vorhees and Michael Myers, Krueger has a big personality where he likes to taunt his victims with vicious pranks and insults that come with the best puns and wit. Instead of just chopping up people with a machete or knife, Krueger had the most inventive kills throughout his films as actor Robert Englund always portrayed this burnt up boogeyman with vigor, style, and dynamic comedy. This particular Favorite Movie Scene of the Day comes from A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors from 1987.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 2nd, 2018

THE FILM

The threats of terrorism, war, chaos, and financial ruin are all too real these days.  ’The Dark Knight Rises’ dives into these issues on a massive scale, which makes any film in the Marvel universe look like mere “child’s play” (no reference to a knife-wielding murderous doll).  Compared with the other Batman movies, everything is bigger in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and there is so much more at stake.  Not one second of this film is wasted, the writing and direction is straight to the point, cohesive, and comes across as totally fulfilling in its 164 minute run-time.

Jana’s Best of 2017!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 1st, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

I know these “Best of 2017” lists should technically be published in 2017, but why would I start 2018 any differently than I lived the majority of my adult life: Procrastinating and underachieving. What can I say? That’s my wheelhouse.

For a year that put a spotlight on some of the shittiest behavior by some of the Hollywood elite, it was actually a good year for TV and movies. I didn’t limit myself in number because as I moved on with the brackets, I felt like I was making ‘Sophie’s Choice‘ on some of these, so they’re all getting in! I’m feeling my inner-Oprah here, You’ve made the list! You made the list! EVERYBODY made the list!! In order to spare myself any arguments, I’m stating up front that my picks for the “Best of 2017” are not edited in regards to scandal or hideous human behavior.

The world of pro-wrestling has been around for many years and has certainly seen its ups and downs, most noticeably being the WWE. There have been many promotions through the decades, which have made a lot of people very successful and it continues to this day. At some point down the road though, there was one company that surpassed everyone by leaps and bounds and brought the pro-wrestling arena into the mainstream. Of course I’m talking about World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), or the artist formally known as World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in its teenage angst years. For a long while, there were two major companies that featured the best of the best in the pro-wrestling world. WWE and WCW. They didn’t play well together at all on and off screen.

Star Wars Episode IX does NOT have a director anymore!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 5th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Wait, what? This shit again? Seriously, those Star Wars execs, including Kathleen Kennedy need to get their shit together, because this is the 2nd time in a couple of months this has happened. Back in June, Chris Miller and Phil Lord were let go from the Han Solo spin-off movie mid-way through the shoot for bullshit reasons. They brought on the capable, yet safe director of Ron Howard to finish the job. At least Episode IX wasn’t in full on production yet, but we did know that Colin Trevorrow was set to direct after his huge success on Jurassic World. That is not the case anymore. Trevorrow is out of the director’s seat, leaving Disney and Lucas Film to  find another filmmaker.

Soundtracks we want to see released on Vinyl!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 15th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

preview

I just love soundtracks to movies. I always have and I believe I always will. There is something about a score to a film that just perks me up in all the right ways and inspires my creative side, whether it be to write a screenplay or go back an watch that old film I love. Music is an integral part to films and is considered to be the mojo of every movie. I’m sure we’ve all seen that odd YouTube video of the final scene in Star Wars: A New Hope, where Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Chewbacca walk down a crowded arena to receive their medals to zero music. It’s super weird and awkward with no music, but just random sound effects of footsteps and a rare cough, laugh, and Chewie’s roar. John Williams did such a great job, as he always does with Star Wars music, but that final scene of music really puts your emotions on full blast. It’s all from the soundtrack too.

Film Review #2: ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (2017)!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 14th, 2017

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991) is in the top 2 Disney animated movies of all-time. I’ll only allow The Lion King, which has a live action version due in 2019 or 2020, to be ranked ahead of it. This isn’t a debate. These are facts. Beauty and the Beast (animated) is a masterpiece from songs to characters, which is why I loved that this new live-action movie stayed so true to the animated version. It was an extremely enjoyable two hours with some really great moments and I look forward to seeing it again.

Film Review: ‘LOGAN’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 17th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Screen Shot 2017-02-17 at 11.10.34 AM

For decades now, we have been clamoring for a ‘Wolverine‘ film done right. From his first incarnation in Hulk #181 to his own miniseries in comic book form in the 1980’s by Frank Miller, to the amazing Saturday Morning Cartoon, and his first appearance in a feature film in 2000 with ‘X-Men‘, which had the song and dance man Hugh Jackman play the iconic character. He was so good at playing Logan/Wolverine, that fans immediately took a liking to him as that character and he went on to play the ‘Snikt-y Snikt’ character in almost a dozen more films. Besides the ‘X-Men‘ films, Wolverine got his own set of standalone films, which may or may not have been liked by a lot of people for various reasons. Either the story was too silly or the character Wolverine was to PG for fans.

Favorite WWE Matches of 2016!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 31st, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

screen-shot-2016-12-31-at-4-38-29-pm

Yes, there were a list of movies that tickled my fancy and made me laugh, cry, and be scared so badly that I had to sleep with the lights on. That list is HERE for your enjoyment. Moving on from that, if you have ever met me or have perused this site, you would know that I like a bit of the ole Pro-Wrestling just a smidgen. So it wouldn’t ben an end-of-year celebrations without trying to show you or convince you that Pro-Wrestling is the BEST thing in the universe. After all, ‘Wrestling is Everything is Everything’.

This is one of the most fun and highest forms of entertainment on the planet and a lot of the time when I’m at screenings, I wish I were watching some good ole fashioned wrestling matches. I don’t know why, but it must be in my blood. The below matches are for sure my favorite from the WWE company strictly. If I were to do an all encompassing pro-wrestling list, I would be writing this for the next two weeks and “ain’t nobody got time for that.” So I’ll leave the ‘Wrestle Circus‘, ‘VIP Wrestling‘, ‘NJPW‘, ‘ROH‘, ‘PWG‘, and ‘Evolve‘ for another post, although I think Jervis Cottonbelly and Joey Ryan (The King of Dong Style) deserve some recognition as perhaps some of the best talent in the wrestling business. Seriously, look them up.

Also, at the very bottom of this list, I will place a non-WWE match, which is one of the best matches I’ve ever seen in Pro-Wrestling, and it deserves it’s own place and category, because it’s that hardcore, fun, and insane. I highly suggest you give these matches that are listed below a real chance. You’ll see the storyline that is being told in the squared circle, the amount of high voltage entertainment and athleticism that goes on each and every night here. You will certainly enjoy it.

THE FILM

If you grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, you probably had a Michael Jordan poster, trading card, sneaker, or action figure of one of the greatest athletes and basketball players to have ever lived. The man defied gravity, broke barriers, and even danced with Michael Jackson. Jordan “retired” from basketball to give the MLB a shot, but shortly returned to the NBA soon after that. In his hiatus from the NBA, Michael Jordan got his own film with Warner Bros. with ‘Space Jam‘, where he would star alongside the Looney Tunes in a family adventure.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Me Before You’!

Jonathan A., here…

THE FILM

Emilia Clarke stars in this delightful adaptation of Jojo Moyes’ hit romance novel “Me Before You.”  Although this seems to have been her first time directing a feature film, Thea Sharrock proved she was more than up to the task, as this film is fluid, sincere and is simply an absolute pleasure to watch.

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Screen Shot 2016-07-26 at 9.51.07 AM

If you grew up in the 80’s, you probably at one point in your life played a game or two of Laser Tag. Back then, it was called Photon, and there were actual brick and mortar locations where you could play this game. It was basically like paint-ball, but with lasers and armor gear. It was a ton of fun. I believe the Tom Hanks movie ‘Big‘ had a scene in the toy store where he was playing this, which you can see below.

‘Batman: The Killing Joke’ Review!!!

I have been waiting for a very long time to see ‘Batman: The Killing Joke‘ come to life on screen. This is one of those stories that has a larger importance, than just an entertaining read, it’s a bit of an origin story and remains a linchpin in the Batman/Joker/Commissioner Gordon/Batgirl saga. Spoilers ahead, darlings.

Here’s the Top 10 Music Films!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 7th, 2016

Jonathan A., here…

curry

Ah, the timeless combination of film and music. The two have been married since the earliest days of film, all the way back to Don Juan in 1926, which starred the uber-hunky mustachioed John Barrymore and was the first film to include a synchronized musical score.  In fact, the first “talkie” film was 1927’s “The Jazz Singer,” which included a number of quaint musical performances and even a truly and horrifically inappropriate blackface sequence.  However, today we aren’t just here to discuss soundtracks, but rather to shine a spotlight on the movies where music is a main (if not THE main) theme throughout the film.

Film Review: ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 7th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

1200

Taika Waititi is one name you will soon remember for a very long time if you don’t already know it. Waititi is writer/director here for ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople‘, which is already in the top 5 BEST movies of the year, but Waititi is also an actor too. He starred in and directed the recent ‘What We Do In The Shadows‘, as well as directed ‘Eagle vs Shark‘ and even worked on ‘Flight of the Conchords‘ amongst other films. He is currently directing the upcoming ‘Thor: Ragnarok‘ film for Marvel, and it’s easy to see why Marvel hired this guy by watching ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople‘. Even if the premise here is similar to other films, Waititi makes the story and characters entirely refreshing and original.

Epic List Of The Top 10 Road Trip Flicks!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jul 3rd, 2016

Hey guys, Jana here,

tumblr_nx5wmzgYvb1qewpgqo1_500

Summer means a lot to me, there’s baseball, which I waxed pretty poetic about in last week’s Top 10 Baseball Movies post. There’s fishing, the fourth of July, a multi-colored tongue from Otter Pops, and the all important road trip. Your trip can be a short jaunt to the lake or it can be a days long event that usually culminates in an epic destination – Wally World, anyone? Whether you trip on your own, with your friends or with your family, there’s something wonderful about having a full tank of gas, a stereo full of tunes and the open road in front of you. Depending on who you’re with it can either feel like a hostage situation or a relaxing break from the weekly drag. Most good road trips feel like a bit of both, not to mention the longing for the comfort that is your home toilet.

I’m gonna count down my top 10 movies that feature a road trip. Strap in, kick on the A/C and let the lull of the road below you relaxes your worries. This was not an easy list to winnow down to only 10 with a few honorable mentions. I left off the obvious ‘Thelma and Louise‘, they’re best friends, they kill someone and drive off a cliff. Yeah, I didn’t give you a spoiler alert there because if you haven’t seen this movie by now, you were never going to. Some road trip movies are better than others and we had differing opinions from each other making this list. So read along and tell me where we agree or disagree or what I’ve left out.

School’s out, the days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer and it’s about the time of year for parents to begin shipping their kids off to various summer camps. Some focus on fun, some are faith-based, others make the focal point anything from acting to sports, I even think there’s a chess camp. Talk about some trouble-makers! Woo-hoo and shit.  No matter where your interests lie, there’s a camp for that. Some of the greatest camps I’ve wanted to attend are all fictional and brought to us by both big and small screens. I’m going to give you a run down of what I think the top 10 summer camps from films are, then you can argue with me if you have better suggestions.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

shane-jump

As I’m recovering from seven insane days of ‘Wrestlemania 32‘ in Dallas, TX., I’ve had time to reflect, contemplate, saturate, and regurgitate every I event I attended. I had my box of Booty O’s to make sure I wasn’t Booty thru the weekend, met some good people, watched some amazing matches, talked with some WWE Superstars, and lost my voice when Shane-O-Mac put his life on the line for the WWE Business. To quote a certain former WWE announcer, it was a slobberknocker of a week for sure that hit me in the solar plexus more times than I’d like to admit. WWE really did it up big this year for Wrestlemania 32. Not only did they put on several good shows, but they also broke records. There was over 101,000 people in attendance at AT&T Stadium for Wrestlemania 32, beating the previous record from Wrestlemania 3 by quite a bit. Not only that, ticket sales and merch sales were way up as well from previous years. It seems like WWE is growing exponentially with more and more fans tuning in every week. That’s a good thing. Instead of writing a recap of the entire weekend, I’ll give you some details of some of the cooler things I witnessed over the past week.

We all know and love Aaron Sorkin by now, right? He was the amazing screenwriter of the ‘West Wing‘, ‘The Social Network‘, HBO’sThe Newsroom‘, ‘Moneyball‘, and the recent ‘Steve Jobs‘ film. He has always been a writer, but hasn’t yet sat in that director’s chair yet. That’s all about to change as Sony has offered him to direct his first film as well as writer it, or shall I say adapt it from the 2014 book, ‘Molly’s Game: From Hollywood’s Elite to Wall Street’s Billionaire Boy’s Club, My High-Stakes Adventure in the World of Underground Poker‘, which is the memoir of Molly Bloom.

Best Movies of 2015, According To Jana

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 30th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

Another year has come and gone and brought with it about a billion movies, some were total crap and a waste of time, but others…oh they were worth every bit of time I spent. Film Review: ‘Concussion’!!

by Janet White on Dec 25th, 2015

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Concussion - Omalu

Football, especially in Texas, is king and they are not alone in this mindset.  In Concussion, Pittsburgh, PA’s love for the game (as well as the rest of the country’s) and the NFL’s reign over it endangered Dr. Bennet Omalu’s (Will Smith) life.  Against all odds, Dr. Omalu, a forensic pathologist discovered and worked to educate the masses of the mental dangers of playing the beloved sport.  Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and its related diseases, named by Dr. Omalu since he discovered the disease, was and possibly still is affecting football players from kids to professionals.  Dr. Omalu is from Nigeria and holds America in high esteem, but his reverence is about to be tested.

Maybe I should add if you’re a fan of Emilio Estevez Esteevez and Bighead, Super Sniffer, Longbranch Pennywhistle or Chocolate Columbo, you’ll be in love with this. Of course, all those names are the many aliases Shawn Spencer uses for himself and that of his faithful friend (Sounds like I’m talking about a puppy, doesn’t it?) and side-kick Burton Guster on the TV series ‘Psych‘. This factors in to ‘Gravy‘ because James Roday is the director of ‘Gravy‘ and he’s brought co-star Dule Hill into the film with him!

Groucho Marx Biopic In The Works From…Rob Zombie?!?!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jun 18th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

2013-01-29-RAISEDEYEBROWSNEW

One of the genre’s I adore in film is an excellent biographical depiction. It doesn’t matter who the subject is, I love the truthful way these films are usually made and like seeing the story unfold, event at a time. What struggles they’ve gone through to become who they are, it’s the intimate details that I genuinely crave. A successful biopic depends on the character and quality of its written source material as it’s vital to the core of a project. Such will be the case with the planned Groucho Marx flick.

WWE: Money In The Bank 2015 Recap!!

by Angelic Heel on Jun 15th, 2015

Angelic Heel Once Again!!

Money in the Bank is where dreams are both destroyed and seen to come true. Where men fight for just the chance to become the WWE World Heavy Weight Champion. It’s all about a little briefcase hung in the middle of the ring with a contract in it. The WWE Universe also saw the Diva’s Champion ship, Intercontinental Championship, and the WWE Tag Team Titles defended. Honor was also on the line as John Cena took on Kevin Owens. But The match that had the most buzz was Dean Ambrose vs Seth Rollins. Their history and The Lunatic Fringe’s antics as of late regarding the WWE World Heavyweight Championship belt made this match a MUST SEE. Did you miss WWE’s Money in the Bank? No worries. Following the current trend of superhero antics on the big and small screens, Warner Bros. stepped up their game by offering ‘Gotham‘, an intimate look at James Gordon before Batman, covering his rise to power in the Gotham police force. Circle September 8 on your calendar, then get ready to relive a series that is sans the bat, but not without the boy, Bruce Wayne. I was skeptical of the success the series would have by benching the caped crusader who is instantly recalled when most hear the name ‘Gotham‘, but season 1 has proven the city is big enough for all variety of heroes and villains.

Was there a better spoof comedy in 1999 than ‘Galaxy Quest‘? I’m gonna go ahead and say there wasn’t and Quest was the greatest thing since ‘Spaceballs‘. As far as space spoofs go, it was killer and it helped that Tim Allen starred. In the 90’s I was addicted to ‘Home Improvement‘ and couldn’t get enough of the comedian. I actually read both of his books and watched every show in syndication so many times that I could quote them in my sleep. I can officially say that the first AWESOME, kick-ass movie of 2015 is finally here, which is ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service‘. Based on Mark Millar’s (Kick-Ass) comic book, director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, Layer Cake, Snatch) has once again delivered the goods and high entertainment value with an homage to spy films, particularly the ‘James Bond‘ franchise. So what’s that mean? It means the guy who made ‘Kick-Ass‘ and produced ‘Snatch‘, made his own version of ‘James Bond‘, and it’s as violent and gory and funny as his other films I mentioned.

I am not claiming that all of the following movies are cinematic works of art. Some of these films might be considered mediocre at best. However, they do all have one thing in common; all of them suffer from having that one scene that takes audiences out of the moment and makes them groan in disbelief.  This list includes movies that were meant to be taken seriously. So over-the-top comedies and machismo action flicks will not be found as they are created with the intent of being ridiculous.

Hey guys, Jana here,

american-sniper-6

In the world of film, there are specific genres that stand out for me and one of those is war movies. I love different titles for a variety of reasons, the story, or even an actor, in this category there is one primary theme that ties each film together – heroes. Their outstanding courage is what gives us that lump in our throats and a swell of patriotic pride that causes us to lift these characters, real or imagined, to elevated heights. It takes a special kind of person to be a hero, I know I couldn’t do it, but I am eternally grateful for the men and women that take up that mantle and defend the lives and freedoms I hold so dearly.

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 6th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan  Here…

blu-ray

It’s been a long while since I’ve done a Blu-ray column for the site. Hell, it might be two years since the last Blu-ray release column was released here. But I figure since it’s 2015 and there aren’t any apocalyptic scenarios or a rat infestation in the house yet, so now must be as good a time as any to start this fun column back up. As usual in this article, you will get some info about the disc and the extras that come with the movie as well as a personal opinion about the movie and a picture-link to purchase the film over at AMAZON where you can save quite a bit of money, and it will give a small percentage kick back to this site so we can continue bringing you excellent stories and bizarre tales. So click on the pictures and start saving.

2015 Disney Film Release Dates With Trailers!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 30th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

star-wars-disney-570x307

While the world is focusing on auld lang syne and bringing 2014 to a close, Disney is pointedly looking to the future or “To infinity and beyond!” as Buzz Lightyear would say. Walt Disney Studios has given us a wide list of release dates for 2015 including the first Star Wars since the mouse has taken ownership. It’s a big lineup and will, no doubt, bring in a wega-payday for the company. In the last year, three films, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘, ‘Maleficent‘ and ‘Captain America Winter Soldier‘ brought in over $700 million world-wide on their own. It stands to reason they can expect the same from 2015. Let’s kick it off with some animation!

Bryan’s Best and Worst of 2014 List!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 22nd, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Wright_39_s_Top_10_Films_of_2014

I can’t believe how fast this year has gone by. 2014 was an interesting year to say the least, most of which was great. Movie-wise, I think 2014 had some excellent films filling its theaters, but of course it had some real stinkers too. Below is my list of the Best and Worst films of 2014 with some added categories down at the bottom. I believe this year I watched over 145 new films, theatrically speaking and it was very difficult to narrow them down from 25. After some chocolate snacks covered in marshmallow cream, I finally had a TOP 10. But when you talk about the Best movies, you have to mention the worst too. My list tends to be a tad bit different from others, but hey, I’m twisted. I highly encourage you to seek out these movies – good or bad and enjoy the rest of your year.

Jana’s Best/Worst of 2014!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 15th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

It’s been a big year for the entertainment world. Netflix’s initial push to bring movie-theater worthy films straight to streaming customers and bypassing the big screen altogether set off a chain of deals that will take those fresh releases and push them directly into homes allowing us to bypass a $15.00 soda, but denying us the $20.00 popcorn you can only get at the theater. Then came the deluge of series and movies being made for exclusive run with everyone from Netflix, Amazon to Crackle and everything in between. Top that off with the huge breach of privacy Sony experienced. New releases were flooded onto P2P sharing sites and private emails from the film company’s big wigs that show us how the infrastructure of Sony really works, not to mention what those involved really think of some of their superstars.

Film Review: ‘Big Hero Six’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 6th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

1400548468000-3BIG-HERO-SNEAKPEEK-64332686

Disney’s CG animation department is on a huge winning streak. With the success of ‘Wreck It Ralph‘ and ‘Frozen‘, Disney is back in the animation game after a long absence while Pixar did their thing. Dinsey’s latest animated adventure is called ‘Big Hero 6‘, and is based off an old Marvel Comics title. I can safely say that ‘Big Hero 6‘ is a big winner and continues Disney’s streak of success.

Hey guys, Jana here,

normal_snicket-still54

Netflix has cannonballed into the original series pool with ‘Orange Is The New Black‘ and ‘House of Cards‘. Turns out that was just a splash of what the SVOD had planned. We’ve seen the announcements of original movies that are being produced solely for Netflix, or being premiered in IMAX and Netflix simultaneously.

Fernando’s Film Review of ‘John Wick’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 23rd, 2014

Fernando M., Here….

John-Wick-Movie (11)

Remember all those times you made fun of Keanu Reeves?  Well get ready to eat your words you nonbelievers!  Reeves is fixin to show you what pain is for 90 minutes of gun shooting neck breaking knife stabbing throat crunching action! The plot is as timeless a tale as our childhood stories of yesteryear.  Who doesn’t remember that lovable parable about the old retired hitman who gets wronged by the Russian mob….oh….well anyways, that’s the plot.  It is an incredibly simple setup for a fantastic revenge story.

Chris August Concert Review!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Aug 29th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

Chris+August+42nd+Annual+GMA+Dove+Awards+Press+DRSt5f72Rlll

Some days, I think my career choice didn’t end up exactly how I wanted then I’m reminded of what a charmed life I really lead. Sure, I’m not a transplant surgeon or even a serial killer tracker for the FBI, but I’ve got the most gravy job out there. Where else can I stay in the relative comfort of my own home, write about TV, movies, singers and theatre shows I love? I’m sure we can all do that from our parents’ basement, but I don’t have prison pallor from living underground for months on end with the only break to be for a Cheetos run. Part of this awesome opportunity I have in writing for Boomstick, is that I’m not only able, but encouraged to go see concerts, theatre runs, films whatever the case may be. It’s good being me! So I didn’t start this just to brag on my glorious job, I get to tell you all about a fantastic event I attended last Friday and the artist I got to spend some one-on-one time with.

Hey everyone, Jana here,

ben-hur2

If you’re new to the site you may not know how I have railed against the habit film makers have of taking classic movies and re-tooling them into what they deem bigger and better. If you’re not new, sorry, had to point that out! Anyhow, I have certain rules that make a re-imagining somewhat acceptable. One of them is if the original has been out for more than 50 years, go for it. If there were only crappy and really horrid special effects in the original, I’m looking at you Bubo, then go for it, but you better knock that flick out of the park! I’m talking about mind-melting special effects and balls to the wall violence. There is something to be said for childhood favorites, no matter how awful that cutting edge technology was, now. This bit of news falls into both categories.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Ginger Snaps’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 25th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

61abmZkAgyL._SY300_

THE FILM

I admit, I’m a suck for werewolf films. Ever since I was shown 1941’s ‘Wolf-Man‘ when I was very little by my dad, I knew that I would be hooked on werewolves for life. Then I watched Michael Jackson’sThriller‘ video and ‘An American Werewolf in London‘ soon after that, while all under the age of eight. Needless to say, these werewolf films have had a profound effect on me, and might be the igniting reason why I love the horror genre so much. When I was in college, I came across a film called ‘Ginger Snaps‘, which was only released in Canada at the time, and being a big movie buff, I had to get my hands on any film that wasn’t being released in the U.S. yet.

Hello, Jana here,

 50ShadesofGreyCoverArt

Are you sick of the whole ‘Fifty Shades of Grey‘ thing? The books sold like wildfire to uptight, undersexed women like they were Prozac-filled chocolate bars. I wanted to know what was so exciting about the E.L. James trilogy, so I took a weekend and read them. Boooooooring. That’s the verdict I came up with. Knowing that they started as ‘Twilight‘ fan fiction makes it pretty obvious to see the connections. Domineering male that is either everything or nothing to the girl that always blended in the background, wasn’t the perky volleyball captain, plain in her own way, but he sees something in her. Something he can’t turn away from. He tries because he knows that if she gets too close, it can be dangerous. Blah, blah, blah, blah-blah!

Hey guys, Jana here,

TedWilliams (1)

It’s getting on into the summer months and it’s been a great one, so far. It has not been that great for my beloved Boston Red Sox though. Right now, we’re last in the AL standings. It’s shameful, really. New York is ahead of us, heck ALL of the AL is ahead of us. I’m not panicking though. The Sox are a rally team, they are intrepid, they WILL see October play time, I just KNOW it!

Hey guys, Jana here,

sacha-baron-cohens-grimsby-will-open-in-2015-156481-a-1392371260-470-75

Sacha Baron Cohen has been on the radar in the entertainment industry since the mid 90’s. It wasn’t until ‘Borat‘ that I learned he was the same guy that was in ‘Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby‘. I know, I know, I missed the whole ‘Da Ali G Show‘. However, I knew if I saw him in something I was going to laugh myself into unconsciousness due to lack of oxygen from that unfortunate, and rather obnoxious, wheezing laugh I get sometimes.

Will Forte Joins ‘The Simpsons’!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jun 23rd, 2014
Hello, Jana here,

180674032JF00024_Life_Of_Cr

Will Forte is a renaissance man. We’ve all seen him as a bit player in dozens of different movies. He’s the nose-bleed guy from ‘How I Met Your Mother‘, ‘Saturday Night Live‘, and in a heart-touching role in the Oscar nominated ‘Nebraska‘. Bruce Dern is amazing, but I really think that Forte should have been nominated for an Academy Award, as well.

Hi, Jana here,

girlfriend_experience_ver3_xlg

Steven Soderbergh’s (‘Magic Mike‘, ‘Ocean’s Eleven‘, ‘Sex, Lies & Videotape‘) 2009 film ‘The Girlfriend Experience‘ that starred then-porn-star Sasha Grey and Chris Santos has inspired what will become ‘The Girlfriend Experience‘, a 13-part anthology series Starz has just greenlit. Soderbergh  will work with Philip Fleishman to executive produce the half-hour series which will explore the relationships of the most exclusive courtesans who provide their clients with far more than just sex. These high-price call girls deliver far more than just sex, they offer the girlfriend experience (GFE). Clients wanting a GFE can afford to pay for the prices the service demands. As you would expect, the GFE calls for a more emotional connection than just sexually. These women talk, and genuinely listen, to their clients.

Hi, Jana here,

josephposter

The Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis, MO is ending it’s regular 2013-2014 Broadway Tour season with ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat‘. Talk about one excited girl! Joseph was my very first Broadway experience, and by experience, I mean it’s the first Little Theatre production I saw, the first time a show stuck with me deeply.

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

It looks like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are brining back ‘Project Greenlight‘ to HBO. If you don’t remember, ‘Project Greenlight‘ was a reality show where Ben Affleck and Matt Damon searched for new filmmakers and writers, ultimately giving the winner a chance to make their own film and distribute it. The show followed the entire filmmaking process. I believe there were only three seasons of this show with the first two seasons revolving around two indie drama films. One of them starred Shia Lebouf and Amy Smart. The third season was the best as they went with a fun balls-to-the-wall horror film with tons of gore. That movie was called ‘Feast‘ and spawned several sequels. It was directed by John Gulager, the son of Clu Gulager. Official press release below.
