Dallas Fan Days Comic Con 2018!

by Bryan Kluger on Oct 27th, 2018

A couple of times a year, Fax Expo HQ puts on a great Comic Book Show, complete with celebrities, voice actors, comic book artists and writers, and cosplayers. This year with Dallas Fan Days is no different, which took place on October 19-21st at the Irving Convention Center. This year, the big draw was ‘Dragonball Z‘, which the main voice actor Chris Sabat was in attendance and had a ton of people wanting his autograph and picture. Dallas Fan Days even had an entire Dragonball Z setup with cosplayers, artwork and statues. It looked great.

When comic con rolls into town, cosplay is a big part of it. Cosplay is dressing up and getting the chance to be someone else for a bit.  People spend weeks, and even months getting ready and building their costumes. There are even people, like LeAnna Vamp who have made a living cosplaying. LeAnna Vamp is a professional cosplayer who recently attended Fan Expo Dallas, and she is known for her YouTube channel “I Love Nerd Girls” and “Star Wars Girls.” LeAnna brought her special kind of nerd love to Dallas this past weekend and shared with us how she got started in cosplay.

Joe Pilato, Terry Alexander and Jarlath Conroy all starred in a George Romero’s horror staple “Day of the Dead.” They set the standard for so many future zombie movies (Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, and Return of the Living Dead to name a few. Not to mention AMC’s hit show The Walking Dead) and are innovators of their time. They worked with the godfather of zombie horror George Romero, as well as special effects master Tom Savini. Recently they reunited at Fan Expo Dallas to talk with Amanda Rebholz of Morbid Curiousity Magazine and share what it was like to be a part of horror history!

Since Dallas Comic Con has been acquired by Canadian parent company Fan Expo, the guest list for this event has expanded and grown to almost astronomical proportions. This May, it was no exception! They really pulled out all the stops and had almost all of Dallas Convention Center (with the exclusion of the F Exhibit Hall) open for business.

Dallas Comic Con 2015: Georges Jeanty Interview!

by Bryan Kluger on Jun 8th, 2015

Hillary T., Here…

cbr-georges-sdcc13-pic

Georges Jeanty is known in the comic world as the man who reinvented Buffy and Kate Kane, aka Batwoman. Did you know Joss Whedon asked for him personally? He wanted someone who draw comic book style art but still hang on to the likenesses of our favorite characters. Jeanty has a penchant for that. I had the distinct pleasure to talk to him at Fan Expo Dallas and ask him about his work with Joss and on the Buffy series and other Joss projects. He was gracious and kind, and I look forward to talking with him again.

Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion are convention staples and more importantly, their shenanigans are legendary. If you attended last year’s May Dallas convention, you know that Nathan called Alan and Face Timed him in Australia since he couldn’t make the con.

For someone who scares easily, the Insidious 4D experience was made for me. Actually, for a short ten minute trip through the small space it occupies, it’s a great scare. The tour manager Josh Randall found out that I scream like a girl, so he sent me in first.

This weekend, at Fan Days 2.0, Taylor and I spent a great deal of time watching and loving all of the fabulous cosplay. There was so much of it- Black Cat (Krystle Starr looked amazing!), Flash(there was an entire family!), Arrow, Arsenal, Lego Hulk (this was genius), Captain Marvel- I could go on! People brought it out, in full force, and it was on point.

Comic Con: Dallas Fan Days 2015!!

by Bryan Kluger on Feb 9th, 2015

Hillary T., Here…

cc011

As a fangirl, I love comics and dressing up. I love being someone else for one day and let’s not lie, Comic Con is my mother ship. This weekend was no exception. I spent two days basking the glory and adoration that was formerly Sci-Fi Expo and is now Fan Days 2.0! It’s my family, and walking through the doors of the Irving Convention Center is always like being at home. It is very much like a space ship or the Sandcrawler from ‘Star Wars’, with its four levels, an over powering awning, and yet, when the parking attendant took mine and Taylor’s (lead camera) money, we were excited and ready to get out of the car and start mingling with everyone and see what Fan Days 2015 had to offer. I decided to go ahead and dress up, because hey, who doesn’t like it when press looks like someone else? My costume of choice? Totally obscure and amazing! I was ready to go as Special Agent Dale Cooper, from Twin Peaks. I even brought along a thermos of “Damn fine coffee,” and a bag of donuts. Dead Laura Palmer would be waiting for me at the convention, for sure!

Alan Ritchson Panel Q&A From Wizard World Comic Con!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Nov 12th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

alan-ritchson-hunger-games-catching-fire

This should be the last article I have to write about the epic event that was Wizard World Comic Con in Tulsa, Oklahoma this last weekend. The entire event was so energetic and exciting! Cosplayers far and wide showing off their hard work, time and lots of money in their creative costumes. For all the little posers that call yourselves geeks because you wear glasses or have gone to see some superhero movies, you’re an absolute disgrace to the title and we reach a level of unconsentatneous, that is to say “disagreement”. If you’re a geek, then I have no terminology for what some of these fans should be called, then.  You might dress as Gandalf to go to a party, but I met a guy that made up his own wizard name and costume, complete with vine covered staff and stayed in costume ALL. DAMN. DAY. He’s in the food court holding his beard back while he eats nachos and the beautiful people walk by smirking while they wear some face paint, a character t-shirt  and their underwear. How in the world can one dressed up person poke fun at another one? I’ll tell you how, because the smirking people are just posers.

Hey guys, Jana here,

I had the opportunity to sit in on Michael Rooker’s fan Q&A panel at Tulsa’s premier of Wizard World Comic Con. Rooker is a megastar right now with his characterization of Merle Dixon in AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead’ and as Yondu from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘. When Rooker took the stage that evening, he looked every bit the movie star we know he is.

If you’re not interested in attending a Comic Con just for the chance to meet a celebrity or buy your body-weight in geeky merchandise, go just for the panels. The interaction between the star and their fans is wonderful. The give and take between the two leads to your discovery that William Shatner would be awesome to play a prank on someone with, that Alan Ritchson is one of the most genuine, kind performer, or that Tom Felton is riding the Harry Potter wave in stride.

For the inaugural event of Wizard World’s Comic Con in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the guests were in abundance. I was extremely excited to sit in on a panel Q&A by Robert Englund. Before Englund took the stage, the audience got a special teaser for his newest film, ‘Fear Clinic‘. The film which doesn’t open until February of 2015 can be seen earlier if you are fortunate enough to be able to attend NYC HorrorFest where ‘Fear Clinic‘ will be the official opener.

I’ve circled the dates on every calendar in the house, checked the lineup for new additions every day (sometimes 2-3 x a day), and have considered costuming options. The event in question is the Tulsa leg of the WizardWorld Comic Con taking place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 7-9.

Dallas Comic Con 2014 Coverage!!

by Bryan Kluger on May 23rd, 2014

Angi Here…

Comic Con. The word evokes a range of feelings from a vast diversity of people who come together to celebrate their passions and show their allegiances to their fandoms.  The ways to do this are many, be it through dressing up as their favorite character, meeting the actors and actresses who bring those characters to life, or expressing it in countless other ways, Dallas Comic Con of 2014 offered something for everyone.  Between the vendors offering one of a kind collectibles, getting one on one time with celebrity guests, the panels that brought like minds together, and the sense of camaraderie and belonging between the attendees, I was not disappointed in my first foray into the world of comic book conventions.

More Dallas Comic Con 2014 Coverage – The Event!!

by Bryan Kluger on May 19th, 2014

Rebecca S. Here…

Dallas-Comic-Con-2014

This year’s Dallas Comic Con has come to a close and if you missed it- you missed a lot. This year’s Con was help at the massive Dallas Convention Center, while previous years were held at the (fun, but ridiculously laid out) Irving convention Center. The change to the larger venue effected everyone’s attitude toward the weekend. Having, almost, everything in the same area of one floor was a welcome change. The downfall here is that the site was so big and there was very little (read: no) signage to let people know where the different events were being held.

Every Comic Con features an “artist’s alley” where comic, print, and poster artists are gathered into one area to overwhelm your senses in amazing visuals. This year’s Dallas Comic Con was no different. I tried to visit all of the booths to bring you guys and gals a list of all the wonderful things – so if you’re looking for some amazing and nerdy art to hang on your wall, then look no further.

More Dallas Comic Con 2014 Coverage – The Costumes!!

by Bryan Kluger on May 19th, 2014

Rebecca S., Here….

IMG_6009

This year at Dallas Comic Con I (pictured above in the Tardis outfit) decided to try something I had never done before. Cosplay. I kept it simple, as I do not possess a sewing machine or any type of sewing skills, and purchased my costume. I was surprised to find that people treated me differently while dressed up than they did while I was just in a regular shirt. People were friendlier, and more talkative, especially about Doctor Who. It was fun to plan out the costume but mine didn’t hold a candle to a lot of the costumes out there. I plan on getting a sewing machine and stepping it up a notch for next year, and my son has said he wants to join in on the fun seeing all the other kids dressed up. Time to get planning… as inspiration here are some of my favorite cosplays from the weekend. Enjoy.

‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ lit up Comic Con today with the unveiling of photos of the actors in costume and the impressive panel.  Kristen Stewart will be playing Snow White,  Chris Hemsworth (Thor) will play the Huntsman, Charlize Theron will play The Queen, and Sam Clafin is The Prince.  Hell of a cast.  Now it will be interesting to see this go up against Tarsem Singh’s ‘Brothers Grimm Snow White’ film.  But Tarsem is hard at work promoting and finishing up ‘Immortals’.
