Hey guys, Jana here,

leonardo-dicaprio-inline-zoom-e780bd67-8bfe-4cb1-a724-88c8403b9bba

I am a Leonardo DiCaprio fan. I’ve never hidden it, but I am. I wasn’t in love with him and his boyish good looks like other girls my age were, I recognized him from ‘Growing Pains‘, after all. He didn’t begin his career as absolutely gorgeous, that developed over time. I had to learn to love his work for what it was. Saying that, Leo’s been overlooked for that naked, golden, guy many times before he finally won his first Oscar at last night’s award show.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Leonardo-Dicaprio-6

Some celebrities use their status to get the best dinner reservations, vacations and all the clothes it would take at least 4 lifetimes to wear. Most of Hollywood’s elite find their own ways to give back to the society that made them household names, Leonardo DiCaprio has found his own way as a philanthropist, by giving a voice to the otherwise voiceless with his riveting and sobering documentaries. This is not the only way Leo gives back though, he serves on the boards of World Wildlife Fund, Natural Resources Defense Council, and International Fund for Animal Welfare, along with spearheading numerous public awareness campaigns and launching  The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. This is clearly a man on a mission that is making his celebrity work for him, not the other way around.

Leonardo DiCaprio Joins ‘The Revenant’!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Apr 17th, 2014

Hello, Jana here,

First-Look-at-Leonardo-DiCaprio-in-Character-for-The-Wolf-of-Wall-Street

If there’s an actor that is fit for period pieces, it’s unarguably Leonardo DiCaprio. From ‘Titanic’ to ‘Gangs of New York’, ‘The Aviator’, ‘Django Unchained’, ‘The Great Gatsby’ and even ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ was about as 80’s of a movie as you can go. Now he’s signed onto star in ‘The Revenant’ written and directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (‘Babel’, ’21 Grams’), co-written by Mark L. Smith.

Jana B. here,

The Wolf of Wall Street

I loved ‘The Wolf of Wall Street‘. Two of my favorite things about that movie are Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill as Jordan Belfort and Donnie Azoff. DiCaprio takes on the unbelievably big characters that are usually brimming with excess and he knocks them over the Green Monster. Every. Single. Time. Jonah Hill has certainly come a long way from my first introduction to him in ‘Superbad‘. I saw him and thought, he’s the token funny, fat guy. I believe every group has to have the token, funny, fat friend. That’s my role. I’m the token, funny, fat girl in my group. I’m really happy that Jonah Hill broke out of that stereotype.

Warner Bros. has picked up the rights to Wilson, the just-released biography of the 28th president by A. Scott Berg for Leonardo DiCaprio to produce and star. DiCaprio will produce the adaptation with Appian Way’s Jennifer Davisson Killoran and DiCaprio is of course attached to star as Woodrow Wilson. The book, which hit shelves last week, has received generally positive reviews for its intimate portrait of Wilson, who was elected president in 1912, guided the nation through World War I and suffered a stroke in office while stumping across America for the peace treaty and the League of Nations.

You just can’t keep Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio away from each other. The two are prepping a new film that is based on the true crime thriller ‘Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI‘ by author David Grann. This insane true story is set in the 1920s where the members of the Osage nation in Oklahoma were brutally killed after someone discovered oil beneath their land. This went on for a while as a serial murder rampage, which was one of the first big cases the FBI investigated.

4k UHD Review: ‘Goodfellas’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 6th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

THE FILM

By the time 1990 came around, Martin Scorsese had already made several masterpieces in film, which continue to be praised and talked about to this day. With the likes of ‘Raging Bull‘, ‘Taxi Driver‘, and ‘The Last Waltz‘, we all knew that Scorsese was one of the finest filmmakers and storytellers around. Even with just those three previous films mentioned, you’d know you were in for a treat when Scorsese wanted to show you something. Then 1990 came around and Scorsese once again changed the film community with a movie called ‘Goodfellas‘, which was his big foray into the whole mafia genre.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Great Gatsby’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 25th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

THE FILM

Director Baz Luhrmann has created a grand opus filled with shiny costumes, modern music, magical camera tricks, and classic style of early Hollywood film-making to bring to life once again F. Scott Fitzgerald’s beloved and iconic novel ‘The Great Gatsby‘. The film is over-the-top, lavish, and a bit flawed. But that is how the title character is after all. The feel and tone of the film is entrancing, as the visuals take is to the early 20s in New York, where we become infatuated with Gatsby and his American dream.

Film Review: ‘The Revenant’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 7th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

the-revenant-fn01

Could this finally be the year for Leonardo DiCaprio to take home that Oscar gold? It very well could be for his performance in ‘The Revenant‘. This is a movie that went through a few directors and actors before it landed on the ‘Birdman‘ director Alejandro G. Inarritu and Leo. At one point the studio wanted Park Chan-wook (‘Oldboy‘) to direct Samuel L. Jackson in the film, but that all fell through. Then the film went to John Hillcoat to direct Christian Bale in the film, before landing on Inarritu and DiCaprio.

Netflix is, at this point, well established in the original series game so it comes as no surprise that their further efforts are drawing some serious star power. Case in point – ‘Frontier‘ from director Brad Peyton, you might recognize that name on the director’s title for ‘San Andreas‘ with co-starred one hell of a powerhouse in Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. So we know Peyton can work with the big names, but who is his star going to be for the streamers new series, ‘Frontier‘ but Khal Drogog himself, Jason Momoa.

Film Review: ‘Black Mass’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 16th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 8.01.58 PM

It’s okay to look at ‘Black Mass‘ as a distant sequel to the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ movies. Both have bad guys, wars, guns, monsters, and Johnny Depp. Maybe I’m reaching a bit there, but it’s still fun to think about them as distant cousins in movies. The story of James ‘Whitey’ Bulger has been told a lot, especially recently. If you’re unfamiliar with who Bulger is, he was one of the most vicious and heinous human beings to ever walk the planet. He was even the FBI’s Most Wanted man for more than a decade, as he spent most of his time in Boston as a mafia boss who committed murder amongst other things.

Top 10 List of Reboots We Don’t Want To See!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 8th, 2014

Paul N., Here…

Terminator-5-TV-Series

Like Bill Murray once said, “he’s got to be stopped. And I have to stop him.” You might have thought he was talking about a weather-predicting rodent, but no, he was actually talking about studio executives (the “he” is collective). Hollywood, like any business, is in it to make money. Therefore, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that they choose to rehash tried and true film formulas over and over again rather than take a chance on something new. While this is understandable (albeit infuriating), it doesn’t excuse the idea that EVERYTHING deserves to be re-made. Some films, like priceless art, should never be re-made and re-sold. Every time a classic film gets re-made, audiences hold their collective breaths and hope that it won’t be a straight shot in “the feels” (that nostalgic part of your brain that remembers, with fondness, all your pop culture favorites).

Michael “explosion” Bay is releasing his latest bastardization of 80’s culture unto the world in the shape of the beloved “heroes in a half shell”. In case you haven’t been following, this has been one cluster mess after another. From alien origins to white-washed villains, this movie begs the questions: “does Michael Bay hate the 80’s? Did he have some traumatically horrific experience with toys when he was a kid? Why does he have to take a giant dump on our collective fond memories time after time?”  Read the rest of this entry »

The Top 10 Perfectly Cast Movie Roles!!

Top Ten Perfectly Cast Roles

The Bard of Avon said it best, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” Some actors are great, and shine in everything they do (Leonardo DiCaprio, Gary Oldman, Daniel Day-Lewis). Some actors are smart enough to pick roles that best use their limited skill sets (Keanu Reeves). This list takes a look at the perfect pairing of actor and role. In this list, you will find a pairing of actor and role so great that the actor ceases to be themselves and instead makes the character take on a life of its own. These pairings are so uniquely theirs that you can’t imagine anyone else taking their place should Hollywood have the audacity to try.

Hi, Bryan Here…

The only thing you need to know  about ‘The Raid 2: Berandal‘ is that you need to run to the nearest theater that’s playing ‘The Raid 2: Berandal‘ and watch it. This is the sequel to 2011’s ‘The Raid: Redemption‘ by Gareth Evans, and is even better than its first literal non-stop hardcore action movie from only a few years ago. This time around, we have a 2.5 hour film full of some of the best action sequences and fight choreography ever put on film. In addition to that, we have one hell of story to go with it, which was mostly lacking from the first film, which I’m not complaining about at all.

John Cusack Enters the Wall Street World!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 29th, 2014

Hello, Jana here,

John Cusack with a serious expression wearing a suit and tie

When you set a series in the world of Wall Street, you need characters colorful enough to not get lost in the atmosphere. Take ‘The Wolf of Wall Street‘, for example, Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of Jordan Belfort was larger than life. He had to be outrageous to stand out in the fast-paced, high-stakes land of the almighty dollar. Christian Bale’s version of Patrick Bateman from ‘American Psycho‘ stands out just as much. Granted, these personalities are not what you would assume to be the norm for traders working on Wall Street, but the ambience definitely fosters these type of personalities.

The Top 10 Gangster Movie List!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 19th, 2014

Jana B. here,

GangsterListBANNER

Some girls are all into sappy romances or heart touchingly saccharine-sweet movies. Movies that sometime contain a troubled family learning to love a curmudgeonly, absent  grandparent, or a shattered family recovering from the death of one of its immediate member. Sometimes it’s a pet that waltzes, unexpectedly, into a tumultuous atmosphere that teaches everyone to love more before it’s killed in some unimaginative way.

I hate movies like that. I hate books like that and I hate songs like that. If a member of a family is killed, it better be a mafia family, and I get to look forward to their violent, bloody and evil retribution.  I am so fascinated by the inner workings of these ‘families’. I love to see the fronts they use to launder their income and imagine ways I would do it if I was involved.

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 20th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…

wolf-of-wall-street-trailer-06172013-014649

Even though Martin Scorsese is 71 years old, he has not taken a slower and more cautious path in making films or even the stories he tells. ‘The Wolf of Wall Street‘ is anything but cautious and slow. In fact, during its three hour run time from start to finish, only one hour seems to have passed by, as we are thrown in head first into a drug-fueled, rich hungry, and ultra luxurious life of Jordan Belfort and the sinful synagogue know as Wall Street. I have no problem with saying that this is right up there with the best of Scorsese’s films, and it might be Leonardo DiCaprio’s most intense, layered, and greatest performances yet. Hundreds of millions of dollars are made during the course of this film, and I’m sure the same amount, if not more will be made at the box office this holiday.

Martin Scorsese is finally getting his two decade long wish to shoot Japanese novelist Shusaku Endo’s novel” Silence” next summer. The cherry on this sundae is that he got “The Amazing Spider-Man” himself, Andrew Garfield to play the leading role. Ken Watanabe (‘Inception‘ and ‘The Last Samurai‘) has also signed on to star in this project, which will most likely garner attention from international distributors at the Cannes market, a first for Scorsese. The religious topic of this book/movie is very important to him from his aspirations to priesthood to his screen adaptation of Nikos KazantzakisThe Last Temptation of Christ”.

Film Review: ‘The Great Gatsby’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 8th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

the_great_gatsby_movie-wide

Director Baz Luhrmann has created a grand opus filled with shiny costumes, modern music, magical camera tricks, and classic style of early Hollywood film-making to bring to life once again F. Scott Fitzgerald’s beloved and iconic novel ‘The Great Gatsby‘. The film is over-the-top, lavish, and a bit flawed. But that is how the title character is after all. The feel and tone of the film is entrancing, as the visuals take is to the early 20s in New York, where we become infatuated with Gatsby and his American dream.

Hi, Bryan Here….

globes-drink

The Golden Globes were last night and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler killed it. They were amazing.  Even former president Bill Clinton showed up to talk about Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln‘.  Even though I really liked the film ‘Argo‘, I was shocked when it won best film and director for Ben Affleck. I was happy to see ‘Django Unchained‘ win for best supporting actor for Christoph Waltz and screenplay for Tarantino. If this is any pre-cursor to the Oscars, I’d be completely let down if ‘Argo‘ takes it all.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great film, but not the best film of the year.  I expect it to and want it to win the best adapted screenplay.  Just my opinion.  Below are the full results from last night’s show.

Film Review: ‘Django Unchained’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 23rd, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

I’m so glad I waited till I saw Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’ to make my top 20 list of films of the year, heck, my top 5 list, because it definitely deserved a spot near the top. Tarantino’s journey into the western genre is smart, funny, and tells a great story of love and revenge, one of Tarantino’s best plot points. I cannot wait to see this movie again.

Hi, Bryan Here….

The nominations came in this morning and needless to say, I went into a fit of rage.  I mean I was so mad, I almost wrote a letter.  After going through the list of nominees, while some of the noms were well deserved, many were not, especially in the FILM categories.  There needs to be a serious uprooting process at the Golden Globes where everyone involved in voting needs to be replaced by others who know what they’re doing.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Move over zombies, because the new threat are animal poachers.  Warner Bros. is developing two films with big names attached about the illegal poaching and trafficking of endangered animals around the world.  Both projects are being produced by Tobey Maguire, Tom Hardy, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s studios.  I expect big casts out of these films too.  Because, once Hollywood gets behind something, they are a force to be reckoned with.

Hi, Bryan Here….

I cannot wait to see Tarantino’s new film.  It looks like a lot of fun.  And it has such an amazing cast.  “Set in the South two years before the Civil War, Django Unchained stars Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago. Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave.”  Enjoy the trailer.

by Gumbercules9000 on May 31st, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here…

James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’ has been officially announced for 3D/2D Bluray, and will be released this September.  I imagine this is going to look stunning, but sadly, it’s just not a good movie.  There will be over 2.5 hours of new footage and behind the scenes extras never before released on this combo pack as well as the all new 3D conversion.  I think I’ll pass.

Warner Bros. To Remake Akira in Live-Action!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 20th, 2011

The Bishop Charlotte Reporting….

I know what you’re thinking. I can read your mind. I am peering into the vortex of your psyche…

“…what.”

No question mark. Just flat-out “what.” Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too.

Akira, originally made in 1988, is the anime cult classic that really brought the genre to America. It’s a sci-fi, cyberpunk epic about two boys who follow very different paths. One, the leader of a biker gang, must save the other from the government’s cruel experiments when he shows potentially dangerous psychic powers. Made when animation was still fairly so-so, Akira broke down the barriers keeping America from sampling the beauty of Japanese anime.

Hi Bryan Here….

We posted a story earlier in the week that Kevin Costner has dropped out of Tarantino’s Western, ‘Django Unchained’ and how Costner should have kept in it.  You can read the story HERE.  Well it looks like Kurt Russell (yes, Jack Burton and Snake Plissken) will replace Costner as the bad guy.

Hi Bryan Here….

J. Edgar explores the public and private life of one of the most powerful, controversial and enigmatic figures of the 20th century. As the face of law enforcement in America for almost fifty years, J. Edgar Hoover (Leonardo DiCaprio) was feared and admired, reviled and revered. But behind closed doors, he held secrets that would have destroyed his image, his career and his life.

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 12th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

1355416686-golden_globe_awards

Here are the nominees for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards. Wow, there were a lot of snubs here. And how did ‘Rush‘ make the list for Best Picture? No way! And what about ‘The Way Way Back‘, ‘Mud‘, or ‘Short Term 12‘ not being nominated? For shame. Let me know what you think of this nominee list?

Jana B., Here….

 goodfellas-banner

Nothing compares to a truly great mafia novel. Unless it’s watching a great mafia movie written by an excellent novelist. That’s just what Discovery is banking on with the announcement of it’s first scripted drama series. The Five Families will be written by scribe Nicholas Pileggi, the author of both Wise Guys and Casino and the screenplays for Goodfellas. Pileggi is also developing a possible series based on Goodfellas for AMC. Coming on board to produce is a familiar name from Goodfellas, Irwin Winkler. Winkler is coming off an executive producing stint with The Wolf of Wall Street featuring Leonardo  DiCaprio.
