‘True Detective’ Fans Get Ready For Season 2!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Apr 9th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

Vince-Vaughn-Colin-Farrell-True-Detective-514711

HBO grabbed the collective viewers attention with ‘True Detective‘ in 2014. A series that won 5 Emmy Awards and was nominated for so many more accolades that it should have won. Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and Michelle Monaghan star in the freshman season of the anthology police detective show. The detectives reminesce on a case from 1995 that has been closed as solved. Questions surface that force those involved to dredge up memories from the past, in looking closer at the variables, corruption is evident on both sides of the thin blue line.

HBO Eyes Stars For ‘True Detective’ Season 2!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Aug 7th, 2014
Hey everyone, Jana here,
‘True Detective‘ was lauded by critics and fans alike in its first season. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have a loyal and already won over group of fans that followed them to the gritty series. Add into that equation fans of HBO’s unparalleled programming and production value and mystery/crime/drama fans and it’s the perfect recipe for success.  ‘True Detective‘ was lauded with Emmy nominations by the truckload. How does HBO compete with itself on such a stellar first season? With an equally star-studded and action packed second season, of course.

I think we’ve answered the question of what the modern equivalent of The Midas Touch is. Vince Gilligan would appear to have it. He is coming off a best series win on Sunday for his hit AMC drama ‘Breaking Bad‘. He’s now teamed up with ‘House‘ creator David Shore for an upcoming CBS drama titled ‘Battle Creek‘. CBS has finalized a production order for the 2014-2015 season already committing to 13 episodes. Gilligan originally created this at least 10 years ago. Sony will co-produce with CBS TV Studios, with Gilligan, Shore and ‘Breaking Bad’sMark Johnson all set to Executive Produce.

Film Review: ‘American Assassin’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 15th, 2017

Dan M. here…

You can’t make an action movie like this in 2017 and expect anyone to be impressed with it. Not when studios crank out Bourne, Bond, John Wick, Atomic Blonde, The Raid, etc. Those are movies that execute things at such a high level with passable stories that at least allow you to buy into the character. Hell, even Jack Reacher had some self-awareness to it that made the shrug-worthy, ridiculous, sequel mildly enjoyable. American Assassin is an all-around pretty bad movie but it does have a few bright spots. It honestly felt like the writers watched a Bourne movie, then got high, and played 3 hours of Call of Duty on easy difficulty before putting pen to paper.

The story of America’s most prolific serial killer will be told by Michael Sheen (‘Kingdom of Heaven‘) in his directorial debut. He will also star as the “Green River Killer” himself, Gary Ridgway. Ridgway had a vicious love/hate relationship with prostitutes and he was convicted of murdering 49 victims throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s but later confessed to at least twice that number and was spared the death penalty by being cooperative with locating victims. The first five victims were found in the Green River leading the media to create the “Green River Killer” moniker.

Hey guys, Jana here,

pennywise

There had to be a stumbling block as far as the re-boot for Stephen King’s ‘It’ is concerned and losing the director and only slated star sounds like it’s occurred. I’m hopeful Cary Fukunaga’s departure as director is nothing but a good sign for the film which, the original, is one of the building blocks of my childhood.

Hey guys, Jana here,

When I heard that director Cary Fukunaga was directing a retooling of Stephen King’s ‘It‘ for the big screen, I had one question, “Who would play Pennywise?” Sure, there are many parts that were cast really well in the original mini-series event that terrified fans everywhere, and some of my ideas of what is good about it are grounded in the nostalgia of watching the show in middle school and what faces became attached to those memories. Richard Thomas as Bill, Harry Anderson as Richie, and John Ritter as Ben are just a few casting choices that I can’t imagine anyone else taking on and doing justice to what is ingrained in my memory. As much as I loved watching those actors get scared, I loved the guy that filled them with terror and caused Bill’s stutter to run sprints around his face even more, Pennywise,  performed to perfection and immortalized by Tim Curry. The announcement I had been dreading has finally been dropped and Pennywise has been re-cast.

Bryan’s Best and Worst of 2014 List!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 22nd, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Wright_39_s_Top_10_Films_of_2014

I can’t believe how fast this year has gone by. 2014 was an interesting year to say the least, most of which was great. Movie-wise, I think 2014 had some excellent films filling its theaters, but of course it had some real stinkers too. Below is my list of the Best and Worst films of 2014 with some added categories down at the bottom. I believe this year I watched over 145 new films, theatrically speaking and it was very difficult to narrow them down from 25. After some chocolate snacks covered in marshmallow cream, I finally had a TOP 10. But when you talk about the Best movies, you have to mention the worst too. My list tends to be a tad bit different from others, but hey, I’m twisted. I highly encourage you to seek out these movies – good or bad and enjoy the rest of your year.

Jana’s Best/Worst of 2014!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 15th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

It’s been a big year for the entertainment world. Netflix’s initial push to bring movie-theater worthy films straight to streaming customers and bypassing the big screen altogether set off a chain of deals that will take those fresh releases and push them directly into homes allowing us to bypass a $15.00 soda, but denying us the $20.00 popcorn you can only get at the theater. Then came the deluge of series and movies being made for exclusive run with everyone from Netflix, Amazon to Crackle and everything in between. Top that off with the huge breach of privacy Sony experienced. New releases were flooded onto P2P sharing sites and private emails from the film company’s big wigs that show us how the infrastructure of Sony really works, not to mention what those involved really think of some of their superstars.

Scooby Doo and Batman are coming to Blu-ray Together!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 7th, 2017

I’m gonna go ahead and say it. There won’t be a better film than this all year. On January 9th, 2018, Warner Bros. is releasing ‘Scooby-Doo & Batman: The Brave and the Bold‘ on Digital Streaming. How can Warner Bros. team up this duo? Well, the villains of the Batman universe have partnered up with the villains of the Scooby Doo universe to terrorize the city. Batman then decides to join the other detective agency of Mystery Inc with Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma to fight crime. There are so many scenarios I want to see played out here. I want to see Batman slap Fred. I want to see Velma and Daphne fight over Batman. I want to see Shaggy try to unmask Batman. I want to see Scooby wear a Bat-Dog costume. I want the Joker and Ghost Clown to torture civilians. I don’t think this is asking for too much.

Film Review: ‘The Girl on the Train’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 6th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

68fbb8f3-27e3-4a97-bda7-d9b8d2a05ee4

I can certainly see the appeal of Paula Hawkins’ first successful novel ‘The Girl on the Train‘, which was released in 2015, and was fast-tracked and optioned into a major motion picture by Universal Pictures to come out this weekend. It has some deeply dark and layered characters and tackles a range of emotions and vices from alcoholism, abuse, and even a murder. It’s a good story with a who-done-it angle that feels fresh and original. The problem here is that the film felt a bit rushed and lazy, which gave way to the very slow burn the film has and never quite stays on point with its many flashbacks and timing, often times showing the same scene several times. It just got tedious and redundant twenty minutes in and never stopped being overly dramatic with longing stares, tears, and silence.

Season 1 of ‘Gotham’ Coming To DVD and Blu-Ray!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jun 15th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

1000543313BRDLEFO_9392df82

Following the current trend of superhero antics on the big and small screens, Warner Bros. stepped up their game by offering ‘Gotham‘, an intimate look at James Gordon before Batman, covering his rise to power in the Gotham police force. Circle September 8 on your calendar, then get ready to relive a series that is sans the bat, but not without the boy, Bruce Wayne. I was skeptical of the success the series would have by benching the caped crusader who is instantly recalled when most hear the name ‘Gotham‘, but season 1 has proven the city is big enough for all variety of heroes and villains.

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Wire’ Complete Series!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 2nd, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

91lJX3dx75L._SL1500_

THE TV SERIES

HBO ‘sThe Wire‘ might be one of the best television shows to ever be aired on any sort of cable or primetime channel. It’s authenticity to real life Baltimore and the lives of the law enforcement, politicians, and criminals is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. In fact, it’s so realistic and well-acted, that one might for a second think they were watching a documentary. Creator David Simon even hired real life criminals and thugs to be a part of the show to give each episode that realness we can totally see through each season.

Film Review: ‘The Barber’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 19th, 2015

Paul N., Here..

barber_still_01

Bowling. Bowling is a game of skill and luck. It also has absolutely nothing to do with the film, The Barber. However, it wasn’t an entirely arbitrary mention either. If you have ever bowled, you know the anguish of watching the ball roll down the center of the lane only to veer off into the gutter at the last possible moment. Unfortunately this too was the fate of The Barber.

Film Review: ‘Inherent Vice’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 8th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

Inherent_Vice_Movie

Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the best directors working today. His films tell unique and compelling stories with such sustenance and amazing characters that you can’t help but be fully immersed within his world. From ‘Boogie Nights‘ and ‘There Will Be Blood‘ to ‘Punch Drunk Love‘ to ‘The Master‘ and everything else in between, Anderson has time and time again show that he is at the top of his game with each film he puts out.

Hey guys, Jana here,

from-hell-main

From Hell‘ may sound like the name of a Johnny Depp film from the early 2000’s and you would be right. What began as a 500 page graphic novel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell, then re-worked into a 20th Century Fox film starring Depp and Robbie Coltrane. There may be a bit of a detective vibe here but don’t expect a Sherlock-type reveal. Where Jack the Ripper was quite selective of his victims, the murders themselves created an equality among the classes with fear being the common denominator. Thus ends today’s master class in ‘From Hell‘.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Mystery Road’!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Nov 12th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

61yj3SNpjfL

Today, I’m watching ‘Mystery Road‘ on blu-ray, I love a good detective mystery and got really excited when I read the description. In an outback town, Jay Swan, an Indigenous cowboy detective, returns home to solve the murder of a teenage Indigenous girl whose body is found under the highway trucking route out of town. Jay is alienated from both the white-dominated police force and the Indigenous community, including his teenage daughter, whom he discovers is connected to the murdered girl.

TV Review: ‘Peaky Blinders’!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Oct 7th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

peaky-blinders-fin_2705945b

I’m an addict. When I see a new TV series that I fall in love with, I marathon every episode until I reach the end, or a cliffhanger. Both of those conditions were incredibly true for my newest addiction – ‘Peaky Blinders‘. ‘Peaky Blinders‘ falls into one of my favorite topics when it comes to what I’m watching and it’s all about mafia. The show was produced by BBC and aired the first season beginning in September of last year. Then Netflix entered the equation by acquiring exclusive US distribution rights from the Weinstein Company and Endemol. It became available for streaming on September 30, 2014. Look it up, add it to your list and enjoy. It’s absolutely brilliant!

Film Review: ‘Tusk’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 17th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

tusk-movie

There is no doubt that Kevin Smith belongs in the same bracket as some of the best directors and story tellers of all time. He along with Quentin Tarantino and a few other filmmakers in the early 90s made their own creative films on a very cheap budget and hit success and have continued to make films still to this day. But Kevin’s story is quite the fun one. This is a guy who loves comics and movies who dropped out of film school, worked at a video store and maxed out his credit cards to the tune of $20k to make his first film ‘Clerks‘.

Film Review: ‘The Drop’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 12th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

The Drop Movie (5)

I love a good mafia drama. There is just something so thrilling and cool about seeing the seedy underbelly of a city and the back door games and scams that the mob plays out. From ‘Goodfellas‘ to ‘The Departed‘, the characters are so well though out and detailed that you can spend over three hours with them and feel like only five minutes have gone by. You could say that a lot of these iconic characters are larger than life itself, which is true, given their past historical accounts of what they did to earn money and gain power. But that is where Michael R. Roskam’s adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s short story, formally called ‘Animal Rescue‘, but now called ‘The Drop‘ differs.

Hey guys, Jana here,

At the end of last week, we brought you a story that featured some casting news for Sony Playstation Network’s first foray into the original programming world. You can read that story, here. Today, we have more casting info.

Sharlto Copley has been in back and forth negotiations to star in the series based on the graphic novel. Copley is an excellent actor and one of my favorite things about the ‘A-Team‘ movie in 2010. His turn as Murdock was so inspired and hilarious, I could watch him all day. I still make jokes about any food that tastes a little off as having been grilled by Murdock with his special sauce (antifreeze). Most recently he was seen in ‘Maleficent‘ as Stefan, there are two films in a post-production phase right now that are set to come out in 2015.

Fantastic Fest is one of the best film festivals in the U.S. not to mention the biggest. Everything there is awesome and amazing. Definitely the place to go if you love genre films as they feature the newest films from all categories featuring in horror, fantasy, sci-fi, action  from all over. Some of the best and most loved films have had their world premieres at the festival. Hoping to take its place next to huge hits like ‘There Will Be Blood‘, ‘Zombieland‘ and ‘Apocalypto‘ is ‘Tusk‘. The oddly named flick comes from the brilliant and irreverent mind of Kevin Smith.

Film Review: ‘Sabotage’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 27th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

sabotage-movie-wallpaper-2014-1366x768

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been on quite a role since his political career in California. He has come back in full force to the movie world and has given us three films, including this one, with five more projects on the way. Needless to say, he has been busy. The first two films, since his time in the Governor’s chair in California were ‘The Last Stand‘ and ‘Escape Plan‘, both of which were PG-13 action vehicles for Schwarzenegger that had a silly and highly entertaining premise, even though the plots of both films were ridiculous. But in both of those movies, we received Arnold’s famous one-liners and his angry glare as he looks down upon his enemies with a giant machine gun in his hand, ever so ready to add to his impressive body count.

Amazon Announces 4 Pilots Green-lit for Series!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 13th, 2014

Hello Jana here,

 dt.common.streams.StreamServer

Amazon jumped head-first into original programming with 5 pilots that were uploaded to their site where they encouraged viewers to watch and comment their opinions. I’m guessing they got the reaction they wanted as they have now picked four of the titles to give a series order. This includes the first dramas for their fledgling, innovative line-up with ‘The After‘ and ‘Bosch‘. Their new comedy series are ‘Mozart In The Jungle‘ and ‘Transparent‘. The fifth pilot that was not picked up, ‘The Rebels‘ comes from Ice Cube and Michael Strahan. From Amazon’s first pilot season saw eight comedies going to pilot while only two were picked up for series, ‘Alpha House‘ and ‘Betas‘. Of those two, ‘Alpha House‘ has been renewed for a second season and ‘Betas‘ has been discontinued.

Jana B. Here,

The_Boston_Strangler_Casey_Affleck_41024

Some people are fascinated by a moving film featuring struggling artists, sports stars, or the tragic events of the nuclear family. Some of us are enthralled by the twisted path of a demented and morally bankrupt serial killer. I fall into both categories, but I am really fascinated by serial killers. In fact, I wanted to be a serial killer tracker for the FBI at one point. Clearly, I was influenced by James Patterson’s Alex Cross novels. I did NOT like the movies based on his works, though. I did like Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross, but I digress.

Bryan’s Review of ‘Sinister’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 11th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Over the past few weeks, I have been hearing that this new horror movie, ‘Sinister’ delivers the scares and is finally a decent horror film.  Something we haven’t seen in at least a year or two.  Needless to say, me being the horror maven that I am, I was super psyched when I heard some fellow critics talk about how much they liked ‘Sinister’ and how scary it was.  This mix of the paranormal, occult, and solving a murder case has its moments of good, but feels forced in the scare department.

Bryan’s Review of ‘The Raven’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 14th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

I’ve been a fan of Edgar Allan Poe for as long as I can remember, and I have always loved watching films about his life, tales, and poems.  I was particularly excited when I heard that James McTeigue was going to direct ‘The Raven’, a murder-mystery that posits a fictional explanation for Poe’s mysterious death.   Unfortunately, while the main idea for the story is original and had the potential to be one of the better murder-mysteries made, ‘The Raven’ was just a series of unexciting plot twists that made me quote, ‘Nevermore’.

BRIDGE – Chapter Ten

by Justin Cline on Dec 28th, 2011

CHAPTER TEN

Bridge was still puzzling out how Miss Fortune could function with just one small garbage dumpster—only half-full in the early part of the evening—when the cook stepped out the back door and lit a cigarette.  He seemed to take no satisfaction from it, and Bridge could have sworn he wasn’t inhaling, the smoke drifting past his face and lingering near his left eye before dissipating into the air. Reviews for the Week of Sept. 29, 2010

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 10th, 2010

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #644 – Mark Waid and Paul Azaceta continue in the third issue of the Origin of the Species arc.  Since Marvel created the “Spidey Brain Trust” and the thrice-monthly schedule over a year ago, many new characters and plot-lines have developed to create this Spider-Man universe.  Waid has found a unique way to throw many of Spidey’s past foes at him all at once in this issue.  Spidey is not only swinging through NYC to escape with his own life, but he’s on the run to save the baby of Norman Osborn and Harry Osborn’s ex-girlfriend, a baby with unique Goblin serum properties (and a huge ransom)…oooh, creepy!  This is a particularly emotional issue with some of the confrontations with his enemies, particularly the cool twist at the end.  I really wasn’t excited about Azaceta’s art the last couple of issues but it has developed nicely, especially with the amazing coloring job.  Azaceta’s pencils are really tight and he has a real knack for illustrating big camera shots and fast-paced action well.  I really thought this issue was a fun read and I can’t wait to read next week’s issue!  (4 out of 5)

CAPTAIN AMERICA #610 – First of all, check out that killer cover.  Cap’s vibranium shield smacking Baron Zemo upside the face is brutal!  Ed Brubaker has had me cheering for Captain America again with the conclusion of his last arc, “No Escape.”  The last four issues have been the story of how the new Baron Zemo found out that his father didn’t exactly kill Bucky (current Captain America) back in WWII like he originally thought.  We get to see Zemo’s true intentions and feelings toward Bucky in this issue, and it may not be the strict revenge plot that you’re thinking.  This was such an awesome issue and it has this insanely cool “pulp” feel to it, particularly with Butch Guice’s pencils.  I was really bummed when Steve Epting left the book as his version of Captain America was definitely my favorite by far…but Guice has really impressed me big time here.  I could honestly care less about the Nomad back-up story as it has little if anything to do with what’s going on in Captain America and I’m very happy that they’re switching gears and having a Black Widow back-up next issue…ahh, much better.  Been away from Captain America for a while?  Come back pronto as it’s getting absolutely awesome again.  (5 out of 5)

CHEW #14 – Always one of my favorite indie/creator-owned series since it debuted, Chew has never dipped into suck territory.  John Layman writes a tight story and has an awesome sense of humor.  The main character, Tony Chu, is a cibopath, which means he receives psychic impressions from whatever he eats…yes I said WHATEVER he eats, as it never fails that he’s put in some pretty cringe-worthy gustatory situations.  The series takes place in a slightly alternative world where the FDA is the top-police force after the Bird Flu epidemic cripples the world.  Tony is a FDA agent/detective and his cases are always in that crazy “oh wow, why didn’t I think of that?” mode, especially centering on the illegal post-Bird Flu chicken production/trafficking.  This is an interesting title as it is definitely meant for adults in it’s graphic nature, but it’s just so ridiculously fun.  Rob Guillory has this really unique art style that can take the violent or grotesque subject matter and twist it into dark comedy awesomeness.  This issue features the return of Tony’s ex-partner Mason Savory as well as a really funny back-story concerning Tony’s past love life, is it possible to wince and laugh at the same time?  By no means was this a bad issue at all, but it wasn’t quite at the top of the heap of Chew books so far, but keep this original series coming!  The creative team assure us we’re in for a sweet 60-issue run.  (4 out of 5)

SECRET WARRIORS #20 – The Secret Warriors is the covert team directed by Nick Fury who has been “underground” in the Marvel U for a number of years now.  Jonathon Hickman is a supremely intelligent writer (loved his amazing indie mini-series The Nightly News) who honestly writes above my head at times as he weaves together so many characters and plot-lines that it is hard to keep up without constant charts and graphs, haha.  When this series first started, it was really just about how badass Nick Fury is and the development of his new core team of covert operatives, but the series slowly built up to including multiple enemy forces (Hail Hydra!) and his own set of sub-teams with their own unique code names.  The cast in this series is HUGE, particularly at only 20 issues in.  This is the penultimate arc of the series, and I highly recommend following along in trade format where you can digest entire arcs together.  I wonder if this will ever receive the omnibus treatment from Marvel one day, as this would be best read all at once.  If this series had more of a focus on Nick Fury, Dum Dum Dugan, and the Howling Commandos, I’d easily give this a top rating, but considering how confusing this is all getting, and how the art has taken a dip in quality, I’m only giving this a (3 out of 5)

AVENGERS PRIME #3 (OF 5) – Marvel had decided to retool/revamp their Avengers franchise with the cancellation of all their past Avengers books and then starting Avengers, New Avengers, Secret Avengers, and Avengers Academy, all with new #1 issue numbering.  And as if four new series weren’t enough to contain all the subsequent Avengers mythos, Brian Michael Bendis has been releasing this Avengers Prime mini-series with legendary artist Alan Davis.  It may be premature of me to say so, but this has been my favorite new Avengers title out of the list and sadly it is only a 5 issue mini.  This story centers around the holy Marvel trinity that is Captain America (Steve Rodgers), Thor, and Iron Man.  Bendis’ dialogue is top-notch, especially with Tony Stark’s monologue with a huge dragon creature as I really felt that Robert Downey Jr. biting dry wit (an instance where the movies have actually positively affected the source material back again).  The three heroes are stuck in one of the nine realms beyond Asgard (as it has fallen recently in the Siege storyline) and it is still a mystery as to what is truly transpiring here.  Davis’ art is SO good, very classic pencils with modern coloring techniques makes for some awesome comic art.  I am salivating for the next issue…thus initiating my first official Pick of the Week here at Boomstick Comics!  (5 out of 5)

The Blair Witch Project (Blu-ray)

This bluray was released  over a month ago exclusively at BEST BUY.  If you have not picked it up yet, then you can pick Blair Witch up anywhere tomorrow.  While this bluray disc is the best Blair Witch has ever looked, it is far from being a demo in your home.  Still tons of grain and just over all sloppy.  But I believe this was the intent of the filmmakers.  To make it look as real as possible.  The sound isn’t really that great on the disc.  Those set aside, if you liked seeing this movie all those years ago, then this is a must pick up to re-live that time and the special features are pretty good.

The Exorcist: Extended Director’s Cut (Blu-Ray)

Finally.  To start out the month of Halloween, we get the hig-def transfer of the scariest movie of all time, “The Exorcist”.  You get the spider-crawl scene, the extended ending and a few other scenes that were added in that were not in the original.  I saw this at the theater last week on the big screen, and it was fantastic.  Still scary as hell.  I wish they still made films like this still.  Where we grow with a character and see them transform into something TERRIBLE.    This is a 2-dsic set with a booklet with behind the scenes photos and essays about the making of the film.  An absolute must for any collection.

Grindhouse: Special Edition (Blu-Ray)

It is about time we get these two films from Tarantino and Rodriguez in one release.  And YES.  YES.  We will be getting all the fake trailers in this release of Grindhouse.    Now I am a big fan of actual Grindhouse films and Tarantino and Rodriguez did an excellent job in re-creating the atmosphere and feel of this type of film.  I cannot wait to sit down with some friends at midnight with tons of beer and food and watch these two films in a row.

Hard Candy (Blu-Ray)

This was another film that was released a while ago as a Best Buy exclusive.  This film made me sweat.  I was on the edge of my seat the entire film.  One of the most tense films I have ever seen.  If you have not seen this yet, I really do not want to give anything away, but seriously buy this film if you love uber tense movies.  What a thrill ride.  it stars Ellen Page from “Juno”.

High Tension (Blu-ray)

This a slasher/horror foreign film from France and it does not Disappoint at all.  A huge twist ending and a whole lot of guts and blood are instore for you.  A great addition to any horror collection and just in time for Halloween.  Marie and Alexia are classmates and best friends. Hoping to prepare for their college exams in peace and quiet, they decide to spend a weekend in the country at Alexia’s parents’ secluded farmhouse. But in the dead of night, a stranger knocks on the front door. And with the first swing of his knife, the girls’ idyllic weekend turns into an endless night of horror.

The Human Centipede (Blu-Ray)

I saw this film a few months ago.  It really did not get a wide release in theaters.  IFC put it on demand for a couple of weeks and I got a chance to watch it.  WOW.  It is a brutal torture film in which a mad scientist/doctor makes a “Human Centipede”, by kidnapping innocent people and sewing his victims ass to mouth so they have one digestive track.  This is a film to watch with others and watch their reaction.  Much much joy.  This is a must own for all you cinephiles out there.  “During a stopover in Germany in the middle of a carefree roadtrip through Europe, two American girls find themselves alone at night when their car breaks down in the woods. Searching for help at a nearby villa, they are wooed into the clutches of a deranged retired surgeon who explains his mad scientific vision to his captives’ utter horror. They are to be the subjects of his sick lifetime fantasy: to be the first to connect people, one to the next, via their gastric system, and in doing so bring to life ‘the human centipede.”

Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying—and the feeling is mutual—but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre’s feelings make an enemy of the class bully, and kung fu prodigy, Cheng. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. The Last of the Mohicans (Blu-Ray)

An epic adventure and passionate romance unfold against the panorama of a frontier wilderness ravaged by war. Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis (Best Actor in 1989 for My Left Foot) stars as Hawkeye, rugged frontiersman and adopted son of the Mohicans, and Madeleine Stowe is Cora Munro, aristocratic daughter of a proud British Colonel. Their love, tested by fate, blazes amidst a brutal conflict between the British, the French and Native American allies that engulfs the majestic mountains and cathedral-like forests of Colonial America.  What a gem of a film in high definition.

Mel Gibson at his best.  In the ravaged near-future, a savage motorcycle gang rules the road. The Maltese Falcon (Blu-ray)

A beloved Bogart classic gets the high-def treatment.  A gallery of high-living lowlifes will stop at nothing to get their sweaty hands on a jewel-encrusted falcon. Detective Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) wants to find out why – and who’ll take the fall for his partner’s murder. An all-star cast (including Sydney Greenstreet, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre and Elisha Cook Jr.) joins Bogart in this crackling mystery masterwork written for the screen (from Dashiell Hammett’s novel) and directed by John Huston. This 1941 Academy Awards® Nominee* catapulted Bogart to stardom and launched Huston’s directorial career – all with a bird and a bang.

A Nightmare on Elm St. 2010 (Blu-ray)

This remake of the beloved 1980’s classic by Wes Craven gets the remake over haul and only somewhat disappoints.  You get everything you want out of the film.  Jackie Earl Haley plays Freddy and he does a good job at it and there are even some straight forward shot for shot remake scenes from the original.  But what is missing or shall I say what is NOT missing.  Listen, I do NOT want an “in my face” reason why Freddy is Freddy.  I do NOT want to know when these characters are in a dream or not until creepy shit starts happening.  And I want Freddy to be the same funny one liner Freddy, which I get but only in the end.  Some stuff was done right and some stuff was not.  Overall I still liked it, and will see another sequel if one gets made, but the original still is the best.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead (Blu-Ray)

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead’ is the debut feature film of Director Jordan Galland, who also penned the original screenplay, which finds the characters from Hamlet, a tip of the cap to Tom Stoppard, and a two thousand year conspiracy involving vampires and the Holy Grail.   This just sounds BADASS!  Must Get.

Secretary (Blu-Ray)

What a modern classic cult film this was.  I love the fetish world and this films explores quite a bit of that.  In an office setting no less.  A true Love Story at heart.  James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal star in the dark comedy Secretary. Praised as “daring, funny and quirkily erotic!” (Glenn Kenny, Premiere) and “sexy and highly stylized” (Gear magazine), Secretary is the story of Lee Holloway (Gyllenhaal), a young woman with a few strikes against her after a brief stay in a mental hospital, who accepts a secretarial position working at the law office of E. Edward Grey (Spader). The work seems normal at first, but somewhere between the typing, filing and coffee-making, Lee and her new boss cross the line of their professional relationship and enter into a Human Resources nightmare!

Splice (Blu-Ray)

I really liked this film.  It was a very different take into the realm of sci-fi and horror.  It is a bit awkward to watch, but I loved where this move took me.  I have not seen it before done.  Very good and highly recommended.  Superstar genetic engineers Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley) specialize in splicing DNA from different animals to create incredible new hybrids. Now they want to use human DNA in a hybrid that could revolutionize science and medicine. But when the pharmaceutical company that funds their research forbids it, Clive and Elsa secretly take their boldest experimentation underground—risking their careers by pushing the boundaries of science to serve their own curiosity and ambition. The result is Dren, an amazing, strangely beautiful creature of uncommon intelligence and an array of unexpected physical developments. At first, Dren exceeds their wildest dreams. But as she grows and learns at an accelerated rate, her existence threatens to become their worst nightmare.

Troll 2: Nilbog Edition (Blu-Ray)

Labeled as the Best Worst Film Ever.  Troll 2 does not have trolls in the entire film nor is it a sequel.  If that does not capture you to want to watch this then I do not know what will.  Disguised as friendly country folk, a pugnacious posse of people-eating trolls lures visitors to their town. But a family of four is about to discover this place is a real tourist trap…and they’re the prey! Now, the no-good gnomes must be destroyed before the family gets flambéed…and the world becomes a buffet in this feeding frenzy of fear!  A ridiculous good time.

That is it for this week.  Stay tuned for next week.
