Film Review: ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’!

Matthew Vaughn is back in the director’s chair with ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle‘, the sequel to the hit 2015 action-comedy film that made over $414 million. The ‘Kingsman’ story line was originally written in comic book form from Mark Millar (Kick-Ass) and Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) and follows a super secret British spy service that protects the world from various threats. It’s like James Bond, but more fun, more violent, and with more laughs. With sequels, especially in the action world, the words “bigger, better, faster” are usually used everyday on set, in an attempt to out-do the previous movie. That can mostly be said for this sequel too, but with The Golden Circle – – it all works.

‘Suburbicon‘ is director George Clooney’s latest picture and it’s being readied for release as we speak, well as I type. He’s assembled a stellar cast for the script from Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, Clooney, and Grant Heslov. The cast is made up in part by Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Noah Jupe, and Oscar Isaac. The film will be in theaters October 27, 2017.

Here we are with the final ‘Hunger Games‘ movie again, ‘Mockingjay’ Part II. With splitting the final chapter into two separate films, you’d think there’d be something worth waiting for or at least a big climax. None of that is found here with Part II, despite what anyone else tells you. I understand why the studio wanted to split the final film into two parts, which would garner double the money and profits off of one story, but in order to have a decent story and film, you need it to go somewhere. In this case, anywhere.

Things are not looking up for Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in this third installment of Suzanne Collins‘ young adult book series ‘The Hunger Games‘. In an effort to squeeze as much money as they can, the movie studio decided to split the third and final book into two parts, much like the last two ‘Harry Potter‘ films and the recent trilogy of the single book of ‘The Hobbit‘. On one hand, the fans will get two movies. On the other hand, there will be a lot of filler between these two films to stretch them out to their two-hour run time.

I am a Leonardo DiCaprio fan. I’ve never hidden it, but I am. I wasn’t in love with him and his boyish good looks like other girls my age were, I recognized him from ‘Growing Pains‘, after all. He didn’t begin his career as absolutely gorgeous, that developed over time. I had to learn to love his work for what it was. Saying that, Leo’s been overlooked for that naked, golden, guy many times before he finally won his first Oscar at last night’s award show.

We are only a few days away from the 87th annual Oscar ceremony, which airs live this Sunday. Again, we will be delivering a live commentary full of jokes, trivia, facts, winners, losers, and giving away free gifts throughout the night. So please, keep it right here during the Oscars and use the hashtag #boomstickcomics when posting to social media. But, let’s talk about predictions for a minute. I’m sure some of you have put some money down on Oscar pools at works or with your friends to see who comes out the winner this year. There were some excellent movies this year along with some amazing performances, so needless to say, this year will be extremely difficult to predict.

Galifianakis Steps Down From ‘Freeheld’ Making Way for Carell To Step In!!!

In a not unusual move, scheduling conflicts have cropped up on the set for ‘Freeheld‘. Zach Galifianakis was originally on tap to play the male lead in the film based on a documentary about domestic partner benefits. The furry, funny man had to step down due to other commitments, making way for Steve Carell to step into the vacated position. The docu followed the story of Laurel Hester and Stacie Andree as the pair fought to amend the Domestic Partnership Act, which would grant pension benefits to domestic partners of all New Jersey public employees. Ellen Page and Julianne Moore are under contract to play the couple.

My heartstrings were pulled some as I saw the late Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee talking to President Coin (Julianne Moore).

Lionsgate sure has a handle on how to market their films and their new teaser trailer for ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1‘ is no different. Instead of the usual 30 second trailer that is filled with mostly text or footage from previous movies, we have a 1 minute and 12 second video from President Snow (Donald Sutherland) from the Capitol, spewing some evil propaganda. It seems straightforward, but as the camera pulls back from President Snow, someone is revealed, and it just got me all excited for this sequel. Fans will be screaming! Enjoy the short teaser trailer. The film opens November 21st, 2014, so we have a while.

In the next installment of Liam Neeson saving the world, or in this case, 150 people 30,000 feet up in the air on a commercial airliner from New York to London, things are so over-the-top ridiculous, things tend to not make a whole lot of sense. But what do you really expect from aLiam Neeson movie these days? That being said, this thriller in the air called ‘Non-Stop‘ is quite fun and is less cheesy than the ‘Taken‘ films, but not as gritty as ‘The Grey‘.

Film Review: ‘Carrie’!!!

‘Carrie‘ was Stephen King’s first novel that was published to the masses, and it made him a writing sensation. Little did we knew back in the 70s that this mastermind would create some of the most horrific settings and characters known to man. Not to mention some of the best non-horror books around. In dealing with remakes, it’s difficult not to compare to the original, as we have the same story arc and characters. In this case with Kimberly Peirce’s take on King’s novel, nothing seems to be too different than the original other than that we are in present day with mobile phones and computers and a few very minor details. Julianne Moore and Chloe Grace Moretz turn in great performances and give this reboot a bit of flair, but the overall pace and execution of some of the key scenes felt vague and lazy. Being the Halloween season and this being a horror film, I expect decent returns for this weekend only.

The lineup for the film portion of the festival has just been announced and Joss Whedon’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ will debut at the festival, as well as the remake of ‘The Evil Dead‘, ‘The Incredible Burt Wonderstone‘, and ‘Spring Breakers‘. The Golden Globes were last night and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler killed it. They were amazing. Even former president Bill Clinton showed up to talk about Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln‘. Even though I really liked the film ‘Argo‘, I was shocked when it won best film and director for Ben Affleck. I was happy to see ‘Django Unchained‘ win for best supporting actor for Christoph Waltz and screenplay for Tarantino. If this is any pre-cursor to the Oscars, I’d be completely let down if ‘Argo‘ takes it all. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great film, but not the best film of the year. I expect it to and want it to win the best adapted screenplay. Just my opinion. Below are the full results from last night’s show.

The nominations came in this morning and needless to say, I went into a fit of rage. I mean I was so mad, I almost wrote a letter. After going through the list of nominees, while some of the noms were well deserved, many were not, especially in the FILM categories. There needs to be a serious uprooting process at the Golden Globes where everyone involved in voting needs to be replaced by others who know what they’re doing.

I must say, this teaser looks pretty great and wastes no time getting the point across of how dangerous Carrie really is. I think Chloe will be amazing in this remake by Kimberly Pierce (‘Boy’s Don’t Cry).
2012 Emmy Award Winners!!!

Below is the list of the winners for the 2012 Prime-Time Emmy Award Winners. I don’t see how ‘Modern Family’ and ‘Two and Half Men’ win anything. They shouldn’t win any kind of award when they go up against shows like ‘Mad Men’, ‘Game of Thrones’, and ‘Breaking Bad’. The Emmy judges need to be fired and never allowed to pick winners ever again. However, much congratulations to ‘Homeland’, ‘Downton Abbey’, Aaron Paul, ‘Veep’, and ‘American Horror Story’

Sofia Coppola Will Direct The Live-Action Version of ‘The Little Mermaid’!!

Director Sofia Coppola is taking a new approach to her career in moving away from the more adult themes to a straight-on kids movie. She is signing her contract to direct a live-action adaptation of ‘The Little Mermaid‘ for Universal Pictures. The goal for this project is to fast track it to hopefully compete in 2015. Sofia has kids now, and like so many actors who are parents, tend to do more kid-centric films because of their little ones. Seems like Sofia is no different.
