‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’ – Film Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 6th, 2019

“‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’ is this year’s most remarkable movie.”

Two unlikely friends pair up for an adventure of a lifetime in ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon‘, (not to be confused with ‘The Peanut Butter Solution‘). With a modest helping of heart, soul, and comedy, along with some sprinkles of Mark Twain, ‘Stand By Me‘, and the best thing in the world – Pro-Wrestling, this film hits all of the right notes from start to finish and quickly became on my favorite movies.

‘Suspiria’ – Blu-ray Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 19th, 2019

THE FILM

(Film Review Portion Written by Dan Moran)

The general plot of Suspiria is that Suzy, an American ballerina, enrolls in a Berlin dance academy which is actually a front for a coven of witches. Dakota Johnson plays Suzy and is a revelation in the part since my big dumb brain still associates her with her lifeless performance in 50 Shades of Grey. Tilda Swinton (as usual) puts in some great work as Madame Blanc as just caring enough yet always with an ominous undercurrent to all of her lines. Swinton also dons a ton of makeup to play a Doctor who becomes interested in the coven after one of the academy’s dance members tells him of the evil there before she disappears.

by Janet White on Oct 15th, 2018

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Slam, shuffle, shuffle, creak, shuffle, and plop. Bad Times at the El Royale skillfully opens with a sensory experience and a blank screen effectively peaking audience’s curiosity (Good job Sound team!). Felix (Nick Offerman) frantically hid a secret and, as expected, was murdered. Fast-forward roughly 15 years; Darlene Sweet (Cynthia Erivo) and Father Daniel Flynn (Jeff Bridges) meet literally on the state line between Nevada and California, which is straddled by the El Royale. The meeting was apprehensive yet playful. Rounding out the known inhabitants of the hotel are Laramie Seymour Sullivan (Jon Hamm), a traveling vacuum salesman; Miles Miller (Lewis Pullman), the front desk clerk; and Emily Summerspring (Dakota Johnson), a mysterious wildcat with sharp claws. Fantastic Fest Film Review: ‘Suspiria’ 2018!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 24th, 2018

Fantastic Fest’s Secret Screening this year was the remake of Suspiria starring Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton. Everyone in the theater loved it and the buzz in the Drafthouse afterward was fever pitch. Every review I have seen so far has praised it up and down. Unfortunately, this is not going to be one of those reviews. I recently rewatched the original Suspiria because to say this movie is very hyped in the horror community would be an understatement so I was prepared to see it next month. As the festival got closer and Suspiria wasn’t announced as an opening or closing film it slowly became the odds-on favorite for the secret screening. As I sat down to watch, I was truly excited.

Hey guys, Jana here,

We’ve got the trailer for ‘Fifty Shades Freed‘, the tertiary novel in the Fifty Shades series by E.L. James. This movie takes us through the marriage and honeymoon of the lead characters Ana and Christian. I guess he has to give her half of his S&M room in the event of a divorce, right? He takes the paddles, she gets the whips? Anywho, if you’re into this, the film drops February 9, 2018 and stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, and my favorite actor in the series, Max Martini (drool).

Film Review: ‘Fifty Shades Darker’!!

by Janet White on Feb 10th, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Fifty Shades Darker - Ana & Christian Elevator

Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson), a once sexual novice, returns as a dominant carnal powerhouse. In quite the role reversal, Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) transformed into a whimpering little drug addict turned kid in a candy store. Before watching Fifty Shades of Grey, I had not read the novels pinned by E.L. James, not this time. I have listened to all four books (yes, Grey is the 4th, for those not in the know, loved the different perspective it offered). Although the production colored within the lines for the most part, the picture was a bleeding watercolor instead of a vibrant oil.

If you just can’t wait for the ‘Fifty Shades Darker‘ trailer, check out this teaser. I’m not a huge fan of this trend, but it is what it is. The 19 second preview doesn’t give us a lot of info to go on, but will pique the interest of enough fans that they will be waiting on the edge of their seats for the official trailer release tomorrow.

Film Review: ‘How To Be Single’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 12th, 2016

Beka P., Here…

Screen Shot 2016-02-12 at 9.45.53 AM

Let’s all take a moment to celebrate the first single ladies movie that’s not a wolf in sheep’s clothes.  How to Be Single at first blush may look like your standard rom-com, and at moments you may even think the message is that at long last you will find your Prince Charming, but have faith my single sisters… this isn’t that movie.

Best Movies of 2015, According To Jana

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 30th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

Another year has come and gone and brought with it about a billion movies, some were total crap and a waste of time, but others…oh they were worth every bit of time I spent. Pre-movie hype, post-movie discussion, and the random hours I spent thinking about it in the shower or sitting at a stop-light. Having said that, this is my list of movies that 2015 blessed us with, and maybe a few the year cursed us with.

Black Mass‘. I’ve been waiting for this movie for a long time, I love mafia storylines. Give me ‘The Sopranos‘, ‘Goodfellas‘, ‘The Departed‘ and ‘The Godfather trilogy’, books, documentaries, whatever it is, I dive in head-first. Bonus points if the stories are true, as in the case of Whitey Bulger.

Film Review: ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 13th, 2015

Janet W., Here…

Fifty Shades of Grey is fifty shades of annoying.  Opening with a clear comparison of Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) in the manner that they start their day.  Grey is precise and disciplined while Steele is clumsy and frumpy.  Because of her sick college roommate, Kate (Eloise Mumford), Steele is tasked with interviewing Grey.  Grey will be the commencement speaker for their college graduation ceremony.  Ms. Nervous Knots is clearly out of her league and this intrigues Grey.  This film is nearly a point-by-point attempt at a re-vamping Wild Orchid (1989) with a more screwed up and twisted James Wheeler (Mickey Rourke) and more dingy and childish Emily Reed (Carré Otis).  Don’t get excited, because it is not Wild Orchid. Touch is a major deal-breaker/game-changer in both films.
