Film Review: The Beguiled!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 29th, 2017

Audrey E., here….

The Civil War is rooted deep in the fibers of U.S. history, and there’s an evident fascination in both literature and film with the American lifestyle now gone with the wind. Retellings of war classics never seem to go out of style, so it’s no surprise that over forty years after the release of its 1971 predecessor starring Clint Eastwood, ‘The Beguiled’ is being reintroduced to a new generation. Comparisons to the original inevitably lingered over her shoulder, but Director Sofia Coppola (The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation) gives the film a fresh, female perspective and garnishes it with her excellent use of lighting, smart casting and artistic framing.

Film Review: ‘Felix and Meira’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 29th, 2015

Paul N., Here…

felix-and-meira

If you are one of the five (ok, six) people who saw If Lucy Fell then you understand the importance of subtlety and symbolism. In that film, Ben Stiller plays an “artist” who struggles with that very concept. All his “art” attempts to relay a message, which he claims hides beneath the surface. The problem is that his message is rather shallow and obvious to anyone with a pulse. To quote his character, it “symbolically sucks”. Felix and Meira, though not a train wreck of a film, suffers from the same problem.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

scrooged

Good news, everyone. Bill Murray and director Sofia Coppola are teaming up again for a Christmas special for television. If you’ve seen Murray on ‘SNL‘ or in his recent excellent film ‘St. Vincent‘, you would see and hear him singing a variety of songs. Most recently the Bob Dylan song ‘Shelter from the Storm‘. This upcoming Christmas Special he has planned will involve him singing as well. And that my friends, is one exceptional holiday gift I didn’t expect.

Hey everyone, Jana here,

safe_image

I am – officially – in love with this new bit of news! Once we heard that Disney was adapting the classic Rudyard Kipling tale ‘The Jungle Book‘ from their original animated format into the second-life of live-action release, the stars attached have gotten bigger and better. Jon Favreau (of ‘Iron Man‘ 1 and 2 fame) is on board to direct some awesomely pedigreed thespians in this venture.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Director Sofia Coppola is taking a new approach to her career in moving away from the more adult themes to a straight-on kids movie. She is signing her contract to direct a live-action adaptation of ‘The Little Mermaid‘ for Universal Pictures. The goal for this project is to fast track it to hopefully compete in 2015. Sofia has kids now, and like so many actors who are parents, tend to do more kid-centric films because of their little ones. Seems like Sofia is no different.

Hi Bryan Here…

Now you all know I love monster movies.  All monster movies.  There is just something about the magical world and the possibilities and different survival scenarios in monster movies that just takes me to that next level.  In most of the survival monster movies I have seen, I usually spend the next couple of days realizing my own survival plans and my “what if” scenarios if the film became a reality.  What I would do differently than the characters in the film.  That sort of thing.  I can tell you this though.  This film, “Monsters” is one of the better monster movies to come out in quite some time.  It is deeper, more suspenseful, and scarier than most monster films I have ever seen.

‘Serenity’ Takes Flight With New Comic Book!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 30th, 2014

Jana B. here,

Serenity

Serenity’…yes, THAT ‘Serenity’. Not the calm, peaceful tranquil serenity. Joss Whedon’s  space-western baby, ‘Serenity’. You can’t call yourself a proper sci-fi geek without quieting your outrage at the improper treatment of the genesis television show named after the beloved transport ship that is the Firefly named Serenity. For those of us that memorized insults in Mandarin – Fox programming execs are just BUN tyen-shung duh ee-DWAY-RO, which is to say “stupid inbred stack of meat” – Firefly is the greatest show that never had the chance to burn out on its own. Big nod of appreciation to this site for the translation and pronunciation.

The Venice Film Festival headed by Quentin Tarantino awarded Sofia Coppola’s movie “Somewhere” the Golden Lion which is the top award given at this film festival.  Now I have enjoyed Sofia’s past films including Lost in  Translation, The Virgin Suicides, and for what it was Marie Antoinette.

“Somewhere stars Michelle Monaghan, Stephen Dorff, and Benicio Del Toro.  Tarantino said “This was a film that enchanted us from our first screening…Yet from that first enchanting screening, it grew and grew and grew in both our hearts, in our analysis, in our minds, and in our affections.” The jury’s decision was unanimous.

“Somewhere” is about a hard living, hard working actor in LA who has to re-evaluate his life when his 11 year old daughter comes for a surprise visit.

If this movie is anything like Sofia’s previous work then I no doubt will love this film and it will be loved by all.

And of course I look forward to the killer soundtrack this movie will be providing.

The trailer is below.  Enjoy.
