Film Review: ‘American Ultra’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 19th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

This late summer movie ‘American Ultra‘ mixes a good stoner comedy with high octane action with a great cast and some decent laughs throughout. You can add to that a good amount of bloody violence in the second half of things. That all being said, ‘American Ultra‘ seems to lose its steam far from the climax of the movie, and seems to just go through the motions until the end. Still, it’s a fun popcorn film to end the summer on. Director Nima Nourizadeh, whose only previous film was the found footage party movie, ‘Project X‘, leaves the handheld camera on the table here, and delivers some decent long shots of violence and action, which is a step up in his career.

Hey guys, Jana here,

american-ultra-poster-final

American Ultra‘ is a new take on the “sleeper” government operative. We’ve all seen the housewife activated to blow her best friend apart, we’ve seen the normal and usual suspects for a sleeper op and even though we know they can be anyone, sometimes the person they end up being is even more surprising to the inactive op themselves. Enter Mike Howell, your local stoner who just happens to be a mind-altered sleeper with some crazy skills. So well trained, he’s marked a liability and targeted for extermination. He’s just a bit more well-trained than anyone can handle.

In the category of “What film hasn’t been optioned for a reboot yet”, one correct answer is ‘An American Werewolf in London‘. This is the last time it can be said, as this property from Universal is in development stages for a remake from auspicious sources. We’re talking producers from ‘The Walking Dead‘, Robert Kirkman and David Albert, and original director John Landis’s son, Max Landis is in the director’s chair.

Hello Jana here,

Max Landis

Script writer Max Landis is a common denominator with several projects that are either in production or pre-production. In the wake of 2012’s ‘Chronicle‘, we find Landis’ name attached to at least 5 projects that are slated for release in 2015. the highly anticipated ‘Frankenstein‘ which will star James McAvoy as the titular Dr. Frankenstein and in a strange casting turn, Daniel Radcliffe is set to star as Igor. Another screenplay Landis has written is making some noise with a new casting choice.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Netflix has jumped from small-screen and so-so feature film debuts to big-budget film exclusivity. I’m not saying Netflix wasn’t on their A-game before, but being the sole place to find the new Adam Sandler movie is a little different than being the only outlet to carry the new Will Smith (‘Collateral Beauty‘) action flick, and that’s exactly who they are now with the debut of ‘Bright‘.

Best Movies of 2015, According To Jana

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 30th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

Another year has come and gone and brought with it about a billion movies, some were total crap and a waste of time, but others…oh they were worth every bit of time I spent. Pre-movie hype, post-movie discussion, and the random hours I spent thinking about it in the shower or sitting at a stop-light. Having said that, this is my list of movies that 2015 blessed us with, and maybe a few the year cursed us with.

Dan Moran’s Top 12 Movies of 2017 Plus Extras!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 4th, 2018

I saw 75 movies this year and I still have 3-4 left to finish up over the next few weeks. I haven’t seen The Post, Call Me By Your Name, or Phantom Thread yet. Phantom Thread is the only regret I have but it doesn’t come out until mid-January and I like to finish my list before first week of January ends. A few special awards before my top 12.

If you’re like me, then you have grown to love filmmaker Christopher Nolan over the years. Come December 19th, most of his films will be released on 4K UHD for the first time ever. The films include the ‘Dark Knight Trilogy‘, ‘Inception‘, ‘The Prestige‘, ‘Interstellar‘, and the recent ‘Dunkirk‘. Each film will come with HDR as well, meaning a richer and deeper looking image for each movie. Each film will feature extras, the standard Blu-ray Disc, and Digital Copies of each movie. The whole collection will retail at about $150 with the ‘Dark Knight Trilogy‘ retailing at around $70. Of course with the holidays coming up, expect big discounts everywhere for these.
