Showtime is getting into the Belushi business finally. Sure, there are a couple of biopics that are in the works for John Belushi, but this is an official feature length documentary about the iconic actor. Showtime has brought on filmmakers R.J.Cutler and John Battsek to make the documentary. Their resume includes ‘Searching for Sugar Man‘ and ‘The September Issue‘, so not exactly lightweights here.

The Dallas Film Society is, once again, preparing for the Dallas International Film Festival (DIFF) which will run from April 14-24. Since it’s inception in 2007, the festival has been a lynch-pin in the film-release cycle as it represents the world and U.S. debuts of dozens of pictures. Creators and acting talent mingle with distributors, deals are made and we see the results on our own screens, it’s a magical time in the life of a film.

John Williams

The DFS has announced their ten lead off selections that will set the tone for the festival this year along with a few special selections that are certain to give you the warm fuzzies in the form of a special Salute to the Music of John Williams with a special screening of ‘E.T. – The Extra Terrestrial‘ and a special concert at the Dallas City Performance Hall featuring The Dallas Winds. X-BOX LIVE raising their subscription prices.

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 30th, 2010

X-BOX LIVE raising their subscription prices.

Yes, I just received an email from X-BOX informing me that they are increasing subscription prices for Gold Level membership to their X-BOX live subscription by $10.00.  Now it will be $60.00 per year rather than $50.00 per year.

So it will be roughly $5.00 a month now starting in November.  Not a huge hike up but still, more money.

I read further into this and was informed of some new changes and upgrades such as: ESPN will be streaming live and on demand content and highlights.  So from what X-BOX says you can watch just about any game you want to.  Sounds great if you love college sports.  In addition, a couple of Kinect features will be added such as video and interaction with your friends online.  The last upgrade they mentioned was Hulu Plus, which I am not sure what that means yet, but hopefully it means all access pass to tons of shows through Hulu.

In all, some cool features will be added that I will use and X-BOX still has the best online networking around.  Plus when Halo Reach and Call of Duty Black Ops are released it will be all worth it.

Tell me what you think of the price increase.

THE FILMS

Presented here in 4K UHD are the first 4 ‘Jurassic Park‘ films, including ‘Jurassic Park‘, ‘Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World‘, ‘Jurassic Park 3‘, and ‘Jurassic World‘, which came out only a couple of years ago. Back in 1993, Steven Spielberg gave us the world of dinosaurs in such a moving, emotional, and entertaining way, that his first film ‘Jurassic Park‘, became a milestone in filmmaking and paved the way for a ton of creative minds over the next few years. With a mix of practical effects and state-of-the-art CGI effects, Spielberg and his crew of filmmakers created dinosaurs all over again, which became a huge phenomenon.

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Disaster Artist’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 8th, 2018

THE FILM

(This film portion was written by Fernando Martinez)

By now you must know about the “The Room.”  If by some chance you don’t know what it is, I would highly recommend viewing before watching “The Disaster Artist,” although it is by no means required.  Just as a cliff’s note, “The Room” is a cult film known as the best worst movie ever made.  It’s a melodramatic poorly acted mess, but it has hit a chord with enough people to gain midnight movie status, along with audience participation a-la Rocky Horror Picture Show.  It is a beast all of its own and it has drawn the love from college stoners to A list actors alike.  Naturally, in the center of the Venn Diagram of these fanbases, lies James Franco.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Dark Knight’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 2nd, 2018

THE FILM

The Dark Knight‘ is one of those rare instances where the sequel is even better that it’s previous original movie. I would say that this film is perhaps one of the greatest, if not the greatest superhero film of all time so far. In addition to that, it’s just a fantastic film itself that can compete with any movie out there. This sequel picks up with Batman in the prime of his justice restoring and bringing criminals to jail. Christian Bale is better than ever here as Batman and we see how him being the caped crusader is taking a toll both physically and mentally on him. He still manages to come through though each time. But soon enough, comes The Joker, played flawlessly by Heath Ledger.

Blu-ray Review: The Lion King Signature Series!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 29th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

THE FILM

I remember when this came out in the cinema.  I was totally and utterly infatuated with this film.  I loved everything about ‘The Lion King’. I loved the characters, the animation, the music, and the story.  It was unbelievable when I first saw it at the age of 13.  Now I am almost 36, and the film still makes me feel like I did when I first saw it.  I am still completely in awe of ‘The Lion King’. Six years after the big Diamond Edition of the Blu-ray, which included 3D, we now have the Signature Collection of the film, which has some new bonus features, along with some older ones. The audio and video presentations seem to be the same transfers.

Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #9!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 6th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

One of my favorite pastimes is singing out loud while driving or riding in the car with someone. I imagine most of us at one point or another have belted out our favorite tunes by ourselves or with our friends in the car, no matter how short a trip. There’s just something fun about singing along with our favorite musicians at the top of our lungs. Perhaps the best scene dedicated to singing in the car with your friends was conceived by Penelope Spheeris who gave us the iconic and amazing documentaries The Decline of Western Civilization that took an in depth and personal look at the punk rock scene. If you haven’t seen these films, I highly suggest you do immediately.

If there ever was a guitar player besides Jimi Hendrix that should get his own documentary, it should be Eric Clapton. This guy not only produced and created some of the best mix of blues and rock songs, but he did enough cocaine, heroine, and alcohol that would have killed everyone in Bangkok overnight. And those people know how to party with the lady-boys. The documentary is called ‘Eric Clapton: A Life in 12 Bars‘ and will be directed by Lili Fini Zanuck, which sounds like a fake name.

THE FILM

For all the comic book fans around the globe, we live in a great time of moviemaking. Over the past decade, we’ve seen Hollywood take the superhero genre by storm, releasing comic book movie after comic book movie with A-list stars, talented directors, and epic budgets to bring our childhood heroes to life on the big screen. This successful genre has even garnered many awards, as well as numerous television shows on almost every network. It shows no signs of slowing up. Marvel has paved the way for superhero franchises, building on each superhero character that culminated into the ‘Avengers‘ movies, showcasing each superhero across the other superhero movies, providing a big bridge to gather all stories together. It’s been an  excellent financial and critical success.

I’m not the only one though, as you can listen to forty seconds of a radio show below to see well-respected and professional film critics laugh at the word. It might be ironic and even funnier when you say the word and imply the former politician Anthony Weiner from a few years ago, given what happened with that guy’s political run and life. Luckily for us, a couple people made a documentary on Anthony Weiner’s life in the thick of all the scandals, simply titled ‘Weiner‘.

Their channel will be called “Hi-YAH!“, as in the thing that the usual fun martial artists yell out when the swing chop, stab, swing chop someone on film and will debut on Playstation VUE on January 26th. Wait, that’s like next week (AWESOME). Don’t fret though, ‘Hi-YAH!‘ will be available on additional platforms later on in the year and will feature films from Bruce Lee, Donnie Yen, and Jackie Chan. Hopefully, as time goes on, there will be original content as well. For you Asian-action fans, this is HUGE news and a great addition to subscription based services. Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

international-trailer-for-eric-banas-deliver-us-from-evil

We’re in the middle of the big summer movie blockbuster season and Screen Gems has released a new horror film for the July 4th weekend, hoping that the big horror crowds that usually show up at the start of the year or around Halloween will take a break from the BBQ’s and hit up this demonic possession film ‘Deliver Us From Evil‘. It’s got a good premise and the trailers have been quite promising. Even the main story line about a NY detective investigating some really creepy stuff has its merits. But although ‘Deliver Us From Evil‘ has some creepy moments and a surprisingly good exorcism scene, its bad dialogue, story telling, and acting make this possession movie less than stellar and not the horror movie you were hoping for.

This was my first time at Texas Frightmare Weekend so I wasn’t sure what to expect. But needless to say my expectations were succeeded. It was at the Hyatt Hotel at DFW airport and by the time I got there on Friday, there were already a ton of people there. This hotel is perfect for this event.  There was ample room for everyone to move around and everything was easily accessible. I immediately went to see Mr. George Romero (the godfather of zombie films) and Tom Savini (makeup artist extraordinaire). Their lines were fairly long but they moved quickly. Romero looks great and seemed to have a great time while Savini looks like he is tired of the convention circuit. It made me laugh. Everyone who worked at the event was very helpful as well.

Hello, Jana here,

A John Grisham novel is like a mug of coffee on a stormy day, a glass of wine after the kids are asleep, or even a Xanax when you want to rip someone’s head off. The point is, it’s a calming, reassuring presence. It’s going to be an intense, legal, thrill ride that has a feel-good ending. Grisham’s tried and true writing style is gripping, authentic and something that lends itself to film adaptation easily. This has been the case with ‘The Firm‘, ‘The Pelican Brief‘, ‘The Client‘ and ‘A Time to Kill‘ among several others. There is even a complete departure from his norm evident in ‘Christmas With The Kranks‘.

Hello, Jana here,

MICHAEL-JACKSON-michael-jackson-10317030-1082-1263

Most of the time, when a singer dies, their new material releases screech to a halt. Granted, this isn’t always the case. Look at The Beatles and their song, ‘Real Love‘, it was released in 1996 (which just happens to be the year I graduated high school). John Lennon died in 1980, so it can be safely assumed he wasn’t in a recording studio with the other Beatles hammering out new tunes. Musicians have hours and hours of recordings of songs in various level of completion. It may be a first sing-through, something they’ve worked on but can’t get just right, or something that is nicely polished and they just don’t have room on a current album for the extra track. Releasing songs that have been previously recorded but not released can be a bit of closure for producers that worked with the act, for band mates and ultimately for fans.

I fell in love with The Beatles when I was a kid. I loved their sound and that it wasn’t dependent on synthesizers and gallons of hairspray like most popular bands in the 80’s. To me the sound was fresh and a very welcome change. This made it easy for me to follow them into their later years where their sound was more psychedelic. Their iconic musical catalog has been purchased, from Sony/ATV Music Publishing, to make an animated children’s series called ‘Beat Bugs‘. The project is currently in development for the US/Australian production company, GRACE.

Film Review: ‘The Bag Man’!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Feb 28th, 2014

Jana B. here,

The Bag Man

I really wanted to like ‘The Bag Man‘, I did. I love Robert De Niro. I love John Cusack. How could this not be an awesome movie? It started out really promising. The opening scene jumped right into the plot. No excessive build-up, no slow start, just right there. Boom! On first impressions I was already bored of hearing about the bloody bag but I was intrigued, too. I want to know what’s in the bag but I’m also trying to figure out who decided to outfit De Niro and Cusack with the most ridiculous eye-wear known to man. De Niro’s begin to grow on you, but there is no way I could ever take Cusack seriously in those hideous specs.

Jana B. here,

Dr. Horrible

If you don’t know who Dr. Horrible is, I’m going to assume you have been living under a rock, on Mars, or in a cave with no sunlight and/or internet access. ‘Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog‘ is a comedy, tragedy, musical….a comtragical? I like that. I officially coin ‘comtragical’ TM pending. The story in 3 separate acts stars gorgeous voices and wonderful voices from Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day.

The CW Is Bringing Us ‘iZombie’!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Feb 2nd, 2014

Jana B. here,

iZombie

I love network television in the fall. The big reason for that is the introduction of dozens of new pilots hopeful of being selected for series orders. One of the hottest networks is The CW. While still relatively young, The CW zeros in on the 18-34 age-demographic with proven success. Fresh story telling and unique scenarios are their calling cards. Hoping to join the ranks of such proven program favorites like ‘Supernatural‘, ‘The Vampire Diaries‘ and ‘Smallville‘ are several projects.

Break out your business cards and Huey Lewis albums, because everyone’s favorite CEO and serial killer is back. This time on stage in a musical. This coming December at the Almeida Theatre in London, Patrick Bateman will wreak havoc once again onstage in ‘American Psycho‘ the musical. Based on one of the greatest novels of all time by Bret Easton Ellis, this adaptation of ‘American Psycho‘ was written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, composed by Duncan Sheik, and directed by Rupert Goold, who are all A-List talent in their fields.

DIFF Film Review: ‘Midnight’s Children’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 6th, 2013

Claire S. Here…..

Midnight-Children01

If you set out to climb Mount Everest and only get half way before turning back, you won’t get many accolades. In fact, you are more likely to have critics obnoxiously telling you what they think you did wrong. Deepa Mehta’sMidnight’s Children’ did just that. They set out to create a story on an epic level, interweaving political motivations, interpersonal strife, national history, questions of personal identity, and magical realism.   Unfortunately, when “epic” is your standard of choice, movie-goers won’t remember the poetry of your dialogue or the visceral nature of your cinematography.  Because in the end, you set out to climb Mount Everest, and you only made it half way.

The series pilot is written by Michael Seitzman who wrote ‘North Country‘, which starred Charlize Theron. ‘Intelligence‘ will focus on the U.S. Cyber Command Agency and will center on a one guy that has a microchip implanted in his bran  that allows him to access the entire electromagnetic spectrum.
