dave-bautista-shared-photo-russia-1224247015It looks like ‘Escape Plan 2‘ is officially a go and Sylvester Stallone will be back on screen as Ray Breslin, the man who wrote the book on structural security. In the first film from 2013, he found himself set up and incarcerated in the world’s most secret and secure prison, he has to use his skills to escape with help from the inside. The sequel will not see Stallone alone though, Dave Bautista is on deck to join Sly this time around.

Hey guys, Jana here,

dave-chappelle-1-800

Dave Chappelle is joining several other comedians and boarding the Netflix train. Chappelle will fit right in there with three new stand-up comedy specials. One will be an original stand-up comedy filmed exclusively for Netflix. While the other two have not been filmed specifically for Netflix, they’re never-before-seen and come from Chappelle’s personal library. Not only are Netflix giving fans some new comedy offerings, but they’re giving us Chappelle’s first concert specials in at least 12 years!

Film Review: ‘Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 6th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

mike-and-dave-need-wedding-dates

I think the vulgar wedding comedy has formed its own sub genre these days. With films like ‘Wedding Crashers‘, ‘Bridesmaids‘, ‘American Wedding‘, and ‘The Hangover‘, you have all the ingredients to make a modern audience laugh with toilet humor, vulgar language, sex, drugs, excessive amounts of alcohol, and a happy ending (pun very intended). The next on the list of this current sub-genre of wedding comedies is ‘Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates‘, which is actually based off a real life story of brothers Mike and Dave Stangle, who took to the internet to find dates for their sister’s wedding, offering a free trip. They went viral, got a ton of responses, went on national television, and had a book come out.

Hey guys, Jana here,

mike-dave-need-wedding-dates-movie-poster

Coming to theaters July 8 of this year is a scenario many of us have agonized over, needing a date to a wedding we can’t skip out on. Most of us rely on friends, or even try the dreaded blind-date approach, but not these two guys. Party-hard brothers Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave (Zac Efron) go to an extreme to find the perfect date to take to the wedding, which just happens to involve a trip to Hawaii. They place an online ad to find girls their family will approve of. The girls (Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza) who win the position have a little secret their dates will soon learn, they are just looking for a trip to the islands and plan on partying harder than the brothers ever dreamed of.

Dave Bautista Signs Onto ‘Blade Runner’ Sequel!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Apr 4th, 2016

Hey guys, Jana here,

blade-runner

Dave Bautista has made a name for himself in a few galaxies. One of them being the WWE Universe where he kicked ass all over the place, while another one being the film ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ where he played Drax. Where ever you know him from, one thing is certain, the man has a palpable presence on-screen. I’d bet this is part of the reason he has been chosen for a high-profile sequel, and I’m not talking about his part in Guardians 2, this time it’s for ‘Blade Runner‘.

Upgrade is an excellent 90 minute Black Mirror episode. If you enjoy action movies or anything sci-fi I suggest checking out this quiet little movie before it leaves theaters. The basic plot is in the near future a guy has his spine severed when he and his wife get attacked by a group of men. After becoming a quadriplegic, he undergoes an experimental procedure that puts an AI chip in his spine. This chip gives him some superhuman abilities and senses which he uses to hunt down his wife’s killers.

Film Review: ‘Hotel Artemis’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 8th, 2018

Writer Drew Pearce, best recognized for Iron Man 3 (2013) and Mission ImpossibleRogue Nation (2015), has entered his first directorial credit into the heated competition of summer blockbusters. Set up with a unique concept of a secret hotel/emergency-room for criminals in futuristic Los Angeles, ‘Hotel Artemis’ sounds promising on paper, right? But upon execution, the result is a mediocre thriller whose only saving grace is the appearance of Jeff Goldblum and a few comical one-liners from supporting cast.

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Disaster Artist’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 8th, 2018

THE FILM

(This film portion was written by Fernando Martinez)

By now you must know about the “The Room.”  If by some chance you don’t know what it is, I would highly recommend viewing before watching “The Disaster Artist,” although it is by no means required.  Just as a cliff’s note, “The Room” is a cult film known as the best worst movie ever made.  It’s a melodramatic poorly acted mess, but it has hit a chord with enough people to gain midnight movie status, along with audience participation a-la Rocky Horror Picture Show.  It is a beast all of its own and it has drawn the love from college stoners to A list actors alike.  Naturally, in the center of the Venn Diagram of these fanbases, lies James Franco.

Hunter S. Thompson TV Series is Coming to Bat Country!

It will be the year 2018 in a couple short months, which bring in the New Year with tons of optimism, new slates, blossoming relationships, low-carb diets, and tons of new, exciting movies. Speaking of movies, Criterion has unveiled the first films they will release for 2018, starting in January, which looks like it’s gonna be BADASS! I mean, are we really getting ‘The Breakfast Club’ on Criterion? YES, yes we are. Does that mean we will get more John Hughes’ films in the future? Let’s hope so. Below you can read about each release.

THE FILM

(This film review portion was written by Dan Moran.)

The fifth installment of Disney’s nearly $4 billion dollar franchise is a Pirates movie through and through. It is about 20 minutes too long, has a needlessly complex plot, fantastic action set pieces, and way too many characters. I found it to be a real roller coaster viewing experience, where some points I was loving every single second of what was on screen and others I wanted to check my phone to see how much longer was left. There were no scenes in this entire movie that I was just ‘Ok’ with. I was either loving it or tolerating it. When it was all over I was pleased with the ending and, more importantly, that it ended.

4K UHD Review: ‘Kick-Ass’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 2nd, 2017

THE FILM

Back in 2008, Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. created a new comic book that was kick-ass, that they in fact named it ‘Kick-Ass‘. It was basically Spider-Man if Spider-Man had no superpowers and was had a hardcore R rating. The amount of creative energy, violence, comedy, and character development that went into the comic was magical as it was entertaining and wonderful. Millar just had a way with words and story plot that made this comic book called ‘Kick-Ass‘ solid gold. It was to nobody’s surprise that only two years later, we got a feature film directed by Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, X-Men: First Class, Kingsman) and produced by Brad Pitt, that ignited a new breed of R rated superhero films.

Film Review: ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 20th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Matthew Vaughn is back in the director’s chair with ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle‘, the sequel to the hit 2015 action-comedy film that made over $414 million. The ‘Kingsman’ story line was originally written in comic book form from Mark Millar (Kick-Ass) and Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) and follows a super secret British spy service that protects the world from various threats. It’s like James Bond, but more fun, more violent, and with more laughs. With sequels, especially in the action world, the words “bigger, better, faster” are usually used everyday on set, in an attempt to out-do the previous movie. That can mostly be said for this sequel too, but with The Golden Circle – – it all works.

4K UHD Review: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 16th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

THE FILM

First off, my favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe film is ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘. I love the weird, oddball, and sometimes anti-hero characters so much, the dialogue, and the feel of the whole movie, that I really connected to it and enjoyed it on every level. This group of heroes are not the norm and I relish in all their conflicts, endearing moments, and witty banter. That brings us to Vol. 2 that reunites all of our favorite characters as they go on missions to save the galaxy.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is coming to 4K UHD!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 13th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

I can’t believe it’s finally happening. Disney is releasing their first 4K UHD release with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which couldn’t be a more perfect debut release in the new format. Disney has been holding out for a while now, while other studios have been releasing their new and vintage films in 4K. It was only a matter of time. There will be Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos included on the release as well, along with quite a few fun bonus features. You’ll be able to watch the film on digital platforms, starting August 8th, and purchase the actual 4K UHD Disc on August 22nd. So now I’m impatiently waiting for Disney to start announcing some vintage vault films and shows, re-releasing in 4K UHD. It’s only a matter of time, but expect my wallet to dwindle down with the following announcements.

Film Review: ‘A United Kingdom’!!

by Janet White on Feb 24th, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

A United Kingdom - Date

Set in the late 1940s London and the country of Botswana (formerly the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland),  A United Kingdom, is a love story in the spirit of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Society has many ways to try to separate a couple that crosses the barrier and exemplify love is love. Whether it says you cannot be that person because they are from the wrong family, different caste, or, as in this case, of different races, people of vision for a better world have struggled against Society. Sir Seretse Goitsebeng Maphiri Khama (David Oyelowo), was soon to become King of Botswana when he first laid eyes on Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike), a white British woman. The love they come to have for each can either cripple the nation of Botswana or be its champion. Read the rest of this entry »

THE FILM

This film review portion was written by Beka Perlstein of Boomstick Comics.

Life is all about the long game. ‘Now You See Me 2‘ pulls you in from the very beginning and quickly wraps you up in a fun game of cat and mouse with none other than The Four Horsemen. This quirky group of magicians is back from the first flick with one major improvement- Lizzy Caplan has replaced Isla Fisher as the token chick, playing Lula May. She’s funny, spunky and the perfect addition to the otherwise all male ensemble.

Film Review: ‘NERVE’!!

by Janet White on Jul 27th, 2016

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Nerve - Cinematography

To quote Marianne Williamson, Author and Lecturer: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It’s not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Here’s the Top 10 Music Films!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 7th, 2016

Jonathan A., here…

curry

Ah, the timeless combination of film and music. The two have been married since the earliest days of film, all the way back to Don Juan in 1926, which starred the uber-hunky mustachioed John Barrymore and was the first film to include a synchronized musical score.  In fact, the first “talkie” film was 1927’s “The Jazz Singer,” which included a number of quaint musical performances and even a truly and horrifically inappropriate blackface sequence.  However, today we aren’t just here to discuss soundtracks, but rather to shine a spotlight on the movies where music is a main (if not THE main) theme throughout the film.

Film Review: ‘Now You See Me 2’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 10th, 2016

Beka P., Here….

Film Review: ‘TMNT2: Out of the Shadows’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 1st, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

maxresdefault

Coming off the last outing with these four lovable and iconic green characters, I wasn’t so sure about how much I was going to enjoy this sequel, ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows‘ or TMNT2 for short. The last film, which was a remake had a shoddy director and filmmaker Michael Bay at the helm. Needless to say, it was all about explosions and a sexy woman walking around with almost no attention to the turtles themselves. There were about ten whole seconds of the last film that I actually enjoyed, which was the fun scene in the elevator where we saw Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, and Leonardo beatboxing like kids, and when the doors opened, they put their ninja faces on to fight Shredder. That scene really showed what these new Turtles could actually be. So I hoped I would at least get twenty seconds this time around.

A New Animated ‘Garfield’ Movie is Happening!

Have we learned nothing? Film company Alcon has acquired the rights for a new ‘Garfield‘ film. Instead of a live-action film with Bill Murray as the cat, this one will be fully animated, in which ‘Garfield‘ creator Jim Davis will serve as an executive producer. Mind you, Alcon is the same movie company that is doing the ‘Blade Runner‘ sequel.

Film Review: ‘Neighbors 2’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 18th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

0002-neighbors-2-ew_0

It’s rare when a comedy sequel works on all levels. With sequels, you’d hope the original cast comes back and there is a good balance of returning and new jokes and plot devices to make it stand on its own without doing the same recycled material as the original. With the case of ‘Neighbors‘, you had a pretty great cast with Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron, Dave Franco, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, in an ‘R’ rated comedy about a couple with a newborn baby, trying to raise a family next to a frat house. It was a solid premise with a lot of funny moments. The small budget film of only $18 million went on to make over $270 million at the box office.

There’s a new film called ‘Jackpot‘ that has signed on Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Armie Hammer (The Social Network), and Mila Kunis (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) to star. I even hear that Jennifer Garner is about to sign on to the cast as well. ‘Jackpot‘ is of course a remake from a 2011 Norwegian action-comedy film about a guy who wakes up in a strip club with a gun in his hand and surrounded by a bunch of dead people. Oh yeah, and the police have their guns drawn on him when he wakes up.

It was reported yesterday that Will Ferrell was going to star as President Ronald Reagan in a new film. That’s not the case today. The ‘Reagan’ script was highly considered by the actor, but has passed on it . I wonder if this will delay the film even more. So if not Reagan, maybe Ferrell will do a big budget Bush film soon.

***END OF UPDATE**

Will Ferrell has signed on for ‘Reagan‘, this one comes from the Black List. The Black List is a yearly listing of the top unproduced scripts floating around Hollywood. There is not a director attached, but Ferrell will produce through his Gary Sanchez Productions shingle.

AMC has just picked up a third season of ‘Fear the Walking Dead‘ less than a week after this current second season started. The first season had six great episodes and this current second season will have a whopping 15 episodes. This show is a spinoff of ‘The Walking Dead‘ and instead of taking place in the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse, it focuses on the start of it in Los Angeles. The third season will start in 2017, I imagine around the same time as now.

Film Review: ‘Spectre’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 3rd, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

spectre-nbimagesopening-fbpic

The year 2015 marks the 24th ‘James Bond‘ film in the 007 franchise. It also marks the most expensive Bond film to date, which is also in the top two most expensive films ever made with a budget of over $300 million. Even in addition to that, this new 007 movie, titled ‘Spectre‘ is the longest running Bond film with a runtime of 148 minutes. With the billion dollar success and critical acclaim from ‘Skyfall‘ a couple of years ago, the studio and its executives thought it would be a good idea to go bigger and “better” on everything. That’s not always a good thing, as is the case with ‘Spectre‘, which is bloated and disappointing.

Short Film Review: ‘Trying Not To Explode’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 3rd, 2015

Jay S., Here…

trying_not_to_explode_2__large

Short films are some of my favorite forms of cinematic art.  Last week, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend Austin’s Fantastic Fest short film.  Fantastic Fest, as you no-doubt know, specializes in horror, fantasy, and sci-fi.  When “Trying not to Explode”, directed by Dave Dorsey, was described by a friend as “a story about one man’s struggles with spontaneous combustion,” it seemed to fit with Fantastic Fest’s programming, and I figured I was in for a shocker.  I was right.  But instead of being shocked by exploding infernos of human entrails flying across the screen (that was a different Fantastic Fest movie), I was shocked by the amazing heart, vulnerability, and tenderness of “Trying not to Explode.”

Christopher Yost is a big name in the superhero world, he masterminded the script for ‘Thor:The Dark World‘ and the upcoming ‘Thor: Ragnarok‘, besides that, he shaped the world for some of the biggest names in comic-book animation like ‘X-Men: Evolution‘, ‘Fantastic Four: World’s Greatest Heroes‘, ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles‘ and ‘The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Warriors‘, so it makes perfect sense that Sony Pictures and Escape Artists have brought in the master of the effervescent to take a whack at the rewrite of a script for the reboot of ‘Masters of the Universe‘.

Film Review: ‘Foxcatcher’!!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Director Bennett Miller has chosen his four films wisely. Starting with ‘The Cruise‘ back in 1998, Miller has only three more films on his resume, including ‘Foxcatcher‘. The previous two were ‘Capote‘ was an Oscar winner as well as ‘Moneyball‘. Miller has an uncanny knack for telling compelling stories that are based on real life events and engaging the audience to not only be entertained, but to think and discuss these characters and sometimes real people’s motives in what they did in their particular story. You can add to that, Miller’s success in getting his actors to win Oscars almost across the board, and this very dark and creepy film ‘Foxcatcher‘ is no different.

THE FILM

The Doctor and The Devils‘ is a gothic thriller from the same production company that issued ‘The Fly‘, ‘Spaceballs‘ and ‘Robin Hood: Men in Tights‘ – Brooksfilms. Until I researched a little for this review, I didn’t even realize Mel Brooks‘ company made anything other than the classic hilarity his name automatically recalls. Brooks picked up the script from legendary poet Dylan Thomas, wherein the story of true life grave robbers, Burke and Hare is told. Maybe it was Brooks’ success with ‘The Elephant Man‘ that led him back to the surgical-experimentation game, whatever the conditions were, ‘The Doctor and The Devils‘ did not receive the same praise.

We don’t know a ton of details at the moment, but the pilot is set in the very same post zombie-apocalypse world as we’ve come to to expect weekly from ‘Walking Dead‘ but we will see all new entirely characters in a different location. I’m a big Johnny Depp fan, and I love the Pirates movies. There’s a point where you have to let a good thing end while it’s still awesome. The last film ‘On Stranger Tides‘, seemed to begin digging it’s own resting place in Davey Jones’ Locker. I really think that’s where the franchise jumped the proverbial shark. I kind of think Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley‘s departures started the series in a tail spin.

The Multi-Media Men are back with the 37th episode that covers all things in the entertainment industry. We had a small house this time around since it was Father’s Day. Joining me is Adam Conway from the Angelika Film Center and Susan Kamyab from This Chix Flix. It was a lot of fun to say the least.  Here is one of our infamous Re-Cast segments. We went ahead  and recast the iconic film ‘Stand By Me‘, which is one of the best films of all time that starred Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O’Connell, and Kiefer Sutherland, and was directed by Rob Reiner and based off a short story by Stephen King. There is no way we can replace any of the amazing actors aboard here, but in this day and age, a remake is more likely to happen than not. So here are some of our suggestions on who should play which role? Do you agree with us?Let us know  if you agree or missed anything. And please let us know what you think by going to our FACEBOOK page and TWITTER page, which you should visit to catch up on all the latest information. And don’t forget to visit iTunes and Stitcher to subscribe to our podcast. Enjoy the show.

If you are unfamiliar with Black Joe Lewis and his amazing band, then you’re in for a real treat. Black Joe Lewis was formed in Austin, TX, and has been around for seven years and has released four albums so far, all of which are A++ work. He tears the roof off each place he plays at and leaves a lasting impression with his throaty vocals and excellent music.

Film Review: ‘Neighbors’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 8th, 2014

Black Mariah Here…

Neighbors-Movie-Still-1

Let me start off this review by saying comedy movies have gone straight downhill in the past 10 years. I don’t know what demographic survey told movie studios that we wanted our comedies with a side of moral lesson, but this girl, for one, HATES my comedies anywhere near a moral lesson (I’m looking at you ‘Bridesmaids‘).  I truly miss the golden era of Adam Sandler films and comedy recordings. Sometimes settling into a good dick and fart joke film is just what you need. Don’t think about the humor, it’s just funny!
