Feb/2019

Fantastic Fest is one of the events that is pure bliss for any fan of genre cinema. If you love horror, sci-fi, foreign, action, and even adult-oriented movies from the 1970s, then Fantastic Fest is the place to let that freak flag fly high and be with like-minded individuals that truly appreciate the art of movies. All of the madness and fun will take place in Austin, TX starting on September 20th and run for 10 days at the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar St. This year, which is the 14th annual festival of Fantastic-ness, captures the essence of the Korean movie scene with a ton of cool films being showcased from Korea, both new and old. This is something you won’t want to miss.

The first wave of movies has been announced, including the World Premiere of the WWII horror movie called ‘OVERLORD‘ from J.J. Abrams. In addition to that film, Fantastic Fest will host Gareth Evans‘ horror movie ‘APOSTLE‘. Gareth gave us the amazing films ‘THE RAID‘ AND ‘THE RAID 2‘, so you can expect some insane fight scenes and horrific imagery. Alos, a film called ‘THE NIGHT COMES FOR US‘, which stars the badass from those ‘RAID‘ movies will be shown, meaning Iko Uwais will stun us once again with his amazing physical skills. If you were a fan of ‘THE GREASY STRANGLER‘, the director of that movie Jim Hosking has a new film called ‘AN EVENING WITH BEVERLY LUFF LINN‘, which is being described as a David Lynch meets John Waters type of movie. You had me at Greasy Strangler.

Lastly, there are some vintage films coming through from AGFA (American Genre Film Archive), one of which has peaked my interest from the title alone – ‘MARY JANE’S NOT A VIRGIN ANYMORE‘. I have high hopes for this one. Below is the list of films with cast and crew info, along with a brief synopsis. Enjoy and hope to see you all there.

Hey guys, Jana here,

The-Rocky-Horror-Picture-Show-Image-3

This whole re-make thing is nothing short of annoying when one of your favorite movies is zeroed in on as the next target. Another of my favorite musicals will be going under the equivalent of a plastic surgeons knife. The goal is to freshen the story while leaving the overall appearance the same. All to often in cosmetic surgeries the end product is completely unrecognized, the same thing happens with retooled shows. Needless to say my first words were ‘Damnit Janet’ when I read that ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show‘ was the project in Fox’s crosshairs.

Hi Bryan Here….

WOW.  This was a mighty mighty fun blu-ray set to get through.  Took a while as there are hours and hours of extras and commentaries to listen and watch.  It was great watching all of these again.  Some greater than others.  I haven’t watched all of the Superman films since that tin DVD box set came out several years ago.  Oh man do these newly remastered blu-rays look fucking beautiful in HI-DEF.  So, this particular review will be set up by film.  I will go through all eight discs of the set and outline everything you would ever want to know about them.  From the movie itself to the extras and the audio and video quality.  This is one hell of a set and Warner Bros. and DC went above and beyond the call of making one AWESOME home video release in Superman.

Hi Bryan Here….

I am so delighted to be seeing this on DVD for the first time.  I love watching old cartoons from the 60’s.  And ‘Frankenstein Jr. and the Impossibles’ was so much fun.  There were only two seasons with less than 20 episodes in all, but the rock music/action hero cartoon packed each episode with tons of great fun.  It reminds me of ‘Fraggle Rock’ meets ‘Partridge Family’ in the vein of Hanna-Barbera.  This cartoon series also made for some of the most bizarre animated sequences I might have ever seen.  I witnessed a giraffe running upright on two legs with a gun and jumps into an art easel to disappear.  No, I was not on that acid you gave me last year.  Just loads of Dr. Pepper.

Top 133 Films of the Last Decade #’s 84-69

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 20th, 2010

Hey, Bryan here, with the next part of the list of the Top 133 Films of the past decade.  Sorry it has been delayed here recently.  With all the news, movie premieres, being out of town, running the comic book biz, and writing new scripts, I have simply not had the time to get more films added to this list.  So hopefully from now on, I will be able to get this list knocked out every day or two.  Thank you for your patience.  This is list #’s 84 – 69.  Enjoy it.  As usual, you will get the title of the film and the year of release, plus a mini review/memory of the film plus the link to purchase the film which gives a small donation to this site so we can continue bringing you more AWESOME news and prizes.

84_ Irreversible – January, 2003

Oh Gaspar Noe.  How you have imprinted my brain with your films forever.  Especially with this one.  This is a frightening film on all levels.  Not in the monster way, but in the sick sadistic way we are as human beings.  This film is made backwards with no cuts so as to give the viewer no escape of the darkness in this film.  So the film starts out with  a gruesome murder and you find out why this happened.  It is amazing.  Tons of people walked out on this film when it premiered at Cannes.

83_ Wonder Boys – February 23, 2000

A true writer’s film.  A great film about a college professor who struggles with writing his book, drinking, drugs, killing the dean’s dog, and having an affair with his wife and stealing Marilyn Monroe’s coat.  It is a solid film with Robert Downey Jr., Tobe Maguire, and Michael Douglas.

82_ Dog Soldiers – May 10, 2002

A kick ass Werewolf movie from the director of The Descent and Doomsday.  A military unit is sent on some mission and the all end up dead.  2nd Special ops unit is sent out to find out what happened and they come across werewolves.  Tons of great gore scenes and action sequences with some great comedic dialogue along the way.  One of the great werewolf flicks.

81_ Saw – October 29, 2004

The first film that led the way for all these torture films we have seen recently.  This film is on the list because this film is what it is all about making movies.  Take friends who created this world and made this very tiny budget film shot over two weeks.  An original story, plot, and great dialogue formed this film.  It was unleashed upon the world and has spawned six more films and revived careers as well as created new ones.  It is always great to see new and inventive films.  And we got a new monster movie.  Jigsaw.  If you keep making them, I’ll keep seeing them.

80_ Watchmen – March 4, 2009

A magnificent comic book.  One of the first comics that was a complete adult theme that dealt with rape, murder, and genocide.  It was going to be very difficult to adapt this comic into a film.  But they did it very well.  I loved almost every aspect of this film.  They got it mostly right.  The filming is beautiful, the acting by Jackie Earle Haley is  top notch, and the fight sequences are amazing.  See it if you haven’t already.  Another great one by director Zack Snyder.

79_ Eastern Promises – September 14, 2007

A follow up to History of Violence with same director Cronenberg and actor Viggo Mortensen.  A Russian teenager living in London who dies during childbirth leaves clues to a midwife in her journal that could tie her child to a rape involving a violent Russian mob family.   What a great film.  Extremely violent and what a knife fight scene in a shower.  WOW.

78_ Hero – August 27, 2004

I saw this film a couple years before it was released in the USA.  This is one of the most beautiful films you will ever see.  Picture Lord of the Rings epic, but with a Japanese dynasty war twist.  A series of Rashomon-like flashback accounts shape the story of how one man defeated three assassins who sought to murder the most powerful warlord in pre-unified China.  You haven’t seen anything like it.

77_ One Hour Photo – August 21, 2002

Wow.  Does Robin Williams do an exceptional job at creeping me the fuck out?  YES YES YES.  This film is ungodly awkward and tense.  Robin Williams plays a photo clerk at a supermarket who develops all the customers photos.  Only problem is he has an unhealthy obsession with his customers by stalking them, breaking into their homes, and posting their pictures all over his apartment walls.  CREEPY.  Stellar performance.

76_ A Mighty Wind – April 16, 2003

Another gold gem from Christopher Guest.  This mockumentary is about folk music bands reunited for a one night celebration and the lives they have been living and the anticipation and set up before the big event.  The music is just phenomenal and the comedy is top notch.  Love this film.  I had the distinct pleasure of seeing one of the bands live in concert.  BRAVO.

75_ Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – June 4, 2004

The third film in the Harry Potter series is my favorite still.  It is the most beautiful of all of them so far and it is directed by Alfonso Cuaron of Children of Men and Y Tu Mama Tambien fame.  I love this story in particular because it deals with time travel and the relationships of the kids growing up.  Coming of age sort of thing.  I love all these films and this one is at the top of the list.

74_ Spider-Man 2 – June 30, 2004

The amazing sequel that was just as good or better than the first film.  Loved it.  Doc Ock is awesome.  I love the references to Evil Dead and Army of Darkness in this film.

73_ Ocean’s 11 – December 7, 2001

The remake from the rat pack days with an outstanding cast.  This film is so much fun and spawned two sequels.  What works most with these films is the interaction and chemistry between the whole gang.  They are like a big family.  It makes you feel good.  The twists and comedic dialogue are amazing.  I wish for more, but sadly no more.  RIP Bernie Mac.

72_ The Descent – August 4, 2006

A scary film from Doomsday and Dog Soldiers director.  This film seriously freaked me out.  It is a spelunking film.  So take an extreme claustrophobic atmosphere and add monsters to the equation.  I did most certainly sweat during seeing this film.  No men in this film really.  Tons of chicks kicking ass.  Tons of gore and scares.  See it.

71_ Casino Royale – November 17, 2006

The revamp of the James Bond series is GLORIOUS.  The last several have been silly, boring, and unentertaining.  Finally someone came into the series and made badass again.  Daniel Craig brings a new life to James Bond.  I was glas to see him starting out as not a 00 agent and working his way up in the ranks.  It was also good to see Bond get his ass kicked and not be afraid to get dirty and violent.  I am looking forward to more James Bond films.

70_ King Of Kong – August 17, 2007

One of the greatest documentaries ever.  And it is about getting the high score in Donkey Kong.  Yes the arcade game.  But this is again is a classic Good Vs. Evil story but in real life.  Steve Weibe is going for the gold in beating the reigning champs high score.  The reigning champ (Billy Mitchell) will not let him achieve his gold easily.  Tons of shit goes on that is considered fraud and evil and betraying in this film.  It is crazy as well as hilarious.  GO STEVE WEIBE.

69_ Paranormal Activity – September 25, 2009

I really liked this film.  Made on a $15,000.00 budget and has made millions and millions of dollars so far as well as a sequel soon, this film shows us that you do not need any special effects or gadgetry to be scary or great.  Every time the couple is asleep and the famous shot of the entire bedroom and hallway comes on, I tense up and hope nothing happens, but always something does whether it be footsteps, doors opening or closing, sounds, or banging.  This is a scary ghost/demon story.  It definitely made me think twice about walking down the dark hall at night.

BLURAY/DVD Releases For the Last Week of September 2010

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 27th, 2010

Tons of releases this week including my favorite film of all time.  It seems that a few weeks go by with some “ok” releases then one week later oodles of BADASS releases come out, burning a giant hole in my wallet.  Well this is one of those weeks.  Like before, click on the link/picture to be whisked away to AMAZON where you can purchase the movie for a big discount.  Enjoy this week’s releases.

This was a hard film to catch in theaters because it was a very limited theatrical run. Remember that film a few years ago, “Open Water” about that couple that went snorkeling in the ocean and their tour boat left them in the middle of the ocean accidentally? Well, “Frozen” is a little bit like that. A few college kids go skiing for a weekend and take the chair lift up one last time right when the park closes. Midway up the ski lift and about 100 feet up in the air, the chair lift stops and the park closes for the entire week and does not open again until the weekend. Five days without food or water in freezing conditions. What would you do? Check this film out!

Special Features include:

Audio commentary with Writer/director Adam Green and actors Shawn Ashmore, Kevin Zegers and Emma Bell
Catching Frostbite: The Origins of Frozen
Three Below Zero
Shooting Through It
Beating the Mountain: Surviving Frozen
Deleted scenes
Theatrical trailer
*Exclusive to Bluray* – Audio commentary with Adam Green, cinematographer Will Barratt and editor Ed Marx

A spin-off of 2008’s hugely successful Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek reunites Jonah Hill (Superbad), playing a low-ranking record-label employee, and Russell Brand (Despicable Me), the ultimate larger-than-life rock-star Aldous Snow. Also starring are Sean Combs (aka P. Diddy) in a devastatingly funny comic turn, Rose Byrne (“Damages”) and Elisabeth Moss (“Mad Men”), plus cameos from music and media stars including Pink, Christina Aguilera, Lars Ulrich, Pharrel, Meredith Viera, Billy Bush, Mario Lopez, Kurt F. Loder and Paul Krugman. This is as raunchy as “The Hangover” and as funny as Superbad.

Special Features include:

Gag Reel
Getting in Tune with the Greek
The Making Of “African Child”
Five complete music videos featuring Aldous Snow, Infant Sorrow, and Jackie Q
Musical Performances
Deleted, Extended, and Alternate Scenes including Alternate Intro/Ending

Karaoke – Sing Along to 15 Outrageous Songs
Cast Auditions

I really loved Iron Man 2. It was such a blast in the theater to see. The action was non-stop and the characters were even more developed which made me care amore about them. This is something that has been lacking in the comic book film adaptations. Seeing Iron Man and War Machine team up and kill bad guys was out of this world. Mickey Rourke did a phenomenal job as the villain “Whiplash”. This movie had it all for me, even the cool cameos of Thor, Hulk, Black Panther, and the awesome Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. I am looking forward to a 3rd film as well as the Avengers movie in a couple of years.

Special Features include:

Commentary by Jon Favreau
Creating Stark Expo
Practical Meets Digital
Four deleted and extended scenes with optional commentary by Jon Favreau

Music Video: AC/DC “Shoot To Thrill”

Finally. My favorite movie of all time. The 1933 version of King Kong. Actually I have two favorite movies. King Kong and Army of Darkness, but Army of Darkness has already been released in HD, but King Kong (1933) has not, until this week. What an epic movie this is. I love everything about this film. It is not so much an action adventure story but a love story. Pure and simple. “It was beauty killed the beast.” From that first moment that Kong sees Fay, he falls in love, but deep down he knows he will be doomed, for he cannot have anything so beautiful in life. But he protects her from everything and will stop at nothing to be with her, even if it means his own demise. This movie is a must own. i am so excited that this is finally out on BLURAY.

Special Features include:

Commentary by creature creator Ray Harryhausen and visual effects artist Ken Ralston, with archival sound bites from Merian C. Cooper and Fay Wray
I’m Kong: The Exploits of Merian C. Cooper (2005 TCM documentary)
The Making of Kong, Eighth Wonder of the World (7-part documentary)
Trailers

I will see anything with David Bowie. Anything. Especially a David Bowie War Film. Now this is a criterion release which means it is the best release you can get. “In this captivating, exhilaratingly skewed World War II drama from Nagisa Oshima, David Bowie regally embodies the character Celliers, a high-ranking British officer interned by the Japanese as a POW. Music star Ryuichi Sakamoto (who also composed this film’s hypnotic score) plays the camp commander, who becomes obsessed with the mysterious blond major, while Tom Conti is British lieutenant colonel Mr. Lawrence, who tries to bridge the emotional and language divides between his captors and fellow prisoners. Also featuring actor-director Takeshi Kitano in his first dramatic role, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is a multilayered, brutal, at times erotic tale of culture clash that was one of Oshima’s greatest successes.”

Special Features include:

•The Oshima Gang, an original making-of featurette
New video interviews with producer Jeremy Thomas, screenwriter Paul Mayersberg, actor Tom Conti, and actor-composer Ryuichi Sakamoto
Hasten Slowly, an hour-long documentary about author and adventurer Laurens van der Post, whose autobiographical novel is the basis for the film
Original theatrical trailer
A booklet featuring an essay by film writer Chuck Stephens and a 1983 interview with director Nagisa Oshima by Japanese film writer Tadao Sato

Rock & Rule stars Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Cheap Trick and more in this animated classic rock movie. The movie is about Angel, a member of a punk rock band in the apocalyptic future, is kidnapped by Mok, a legendary super rocker. Obsessed with an evil experiment, Mok plans to use Angel’s voice to summon a demon from another dimension. The rest of the band follows Mok to Nuke York in an attempt to rescue her and then the ultimate battle of good vs. evil begins. Why would you say no to this movie? This will be watched with beer and friends at midnight.

Wow. Two releases in the same week with Iggy Pop. Add to that cast, Alice Cooper, Henry Rollins, and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange) and vampires, and you got yourself “SUCK”. It is about a band’s bass player that becomes a vampire, down and out rock band, The Winners are launched into spotlight. Stalked by creepy producers, wild groupies and the legendary vampire hunter Eddie Van Helsing, The Winners soon find fame to be a fate worse than death. Doesn’t that sound AWESOME?

Special Features include:

Audio commentary
Making-of featurette
Music Video
Cast-and-crew interviews
Deleted scenes

Another one of those PG-13 animated superhero films. Ed Asner lends his voice talent to the cast which is always a plus. “After a spaceship splashes down in Gotham City Harbor, Batman and Superman encounter a mysterious Kryptonian with powers as great as those of the Man of Steel. The Kryptonian is soon revealed to be Kara, cousin of Superman, who takes her under his wing to educate her about the ways of Earth. However, the villainous Darkseid has other plans. Seeing an opportunity to finally defeat Superman, Darkseid abducts and gains control of Kara, utilizing the powerful Kryptonian to do his bidding. It’s up to Batman and Superman to save Kara, but they’ll have to take the fight to Darkseid within his hostile world – where unknown, deadly threats lurk around every corner, including a brainwashed Kryptonian able to match Superman blow-for-blow.”

Special Features include:

DC Showcase: Green Arrow (short film)
Sneak Peek at the Next DC Animated Movie
Supergirl: The Last Daughter of Krypton featurette
Two bonus TV episodes handpicked by Bruce Timm

*Exclusive BLURAY Featues* include:

The New Gods
Orion and Mister Miracle Mini-featurettes
Two more TV episodes handpicked by Bruce Timm

Bluray/DVD Releases for the 4th Week of November!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 23rd, 2010

Hi Bryan Here…

The biggest shopping day is upon us and the holiday shopping spree season has already begun.  I am kinda disappointed in this lack of releases this week.  I figured the studios would be pushing their biggest titles this week because it is the largest shopping weekend and weekend of the year.  But they just sort of half-assed it.  Maybe because of all the incredible sales on past releases that have started and will continue on through Monday.  Oh well.  As usual, you will get some info about the disc and the extras that come with the movie as well as a personal opinion about the movie and a link to purchase the film over at AMAZON where you can save quite a bit of money, and it will give a small percentage kick back to this site so we can continue bringing you excellent stories and sales.

Enjoy and Here We Go!!

The Prodigy: Film Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 7th, 2019

The Prodigy is an early-in-the-year horror film that checks most of the boxes of the horror genre while at the same time, showing us something fresh with a possibility of something much larger in scope. Which ever the case is, this film is very promising and I hope there is a sequel of some sort down the line, because this is an avenue of horror that needs to be explored.

‘Glass’ – Film Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 16th, 2019

I genuinely loved every single second of M. Night Shyamalan’s film ‘Glass’. It was the perfect end to a trilogy he started almost 20 years ago with ‘Unbreakable’. Since ‘Unbreakable’ debuted some 19 years ago, we have had a giant influx of superhero films with ‘X-Men’ films, the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now the DC Comics franchise of films. I would like to say that this whole comic book craze mostly started with Shyamalan’s ‘Unbreakable’, which was his followup film to his breakout hit ‘The Sixth Sense’. Since then, we’ve come to learn and expect a certain level filmmaking and performances from superhero movies, mostly due to the phenomenal structure and execution of all the Marvel movies. There’s definitely a pattern there and it sticks the landing each and every time.

4K UHD Review: Tomb Raider (2018)!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 14th, 2018

THE FILM

(This film portion was written by Dan Moran.)

Well the streak remains intact. There still hasn’t been a good video game movie. Tomb Raider isn’t a horrible time at the movies but it sure isn’t a good one. You know that old saying “You can’t put lipstick on a pig.”? Well you can’t put great actors in a video game movie either… its still a damn video game movie.

THE FILMS

Presented here in 4K UHD are the first 4 ‘Jurassic Park‘ films, including ‘Jurassic Park‘, ‘Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World‘, ‘Jurassic Park 3‘, and ‘Jurassic World‘, which came out only a couple of years ago. Back in 1993, Steven Spielberg gave us the world of dinosaurs in such a moving, emotional, and entertaining way, that his first film ‘Jurassic Park‘, became a milestone in filmmaking and paved the way for a ton of creative minds over the next few years. With a mix of practical effects and state-of-the-art CGI effects, Spielberg and his crew of filmmakers created dinosaurs all over again, which became a huge phenomenon.

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Disaster Artist’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 8th, 2018

THE FILM

(This film portion was written by Fernando Martinez)

By now you must know about the “The Room.”  If by some chance you don’t know what it is, I would highly recommend viewing before watching “The Disaster Artist,” although it is by no means required.  Just as a cliff’s note, “The Room” is a cult film known as the best worst movie ever made.  It’s a melodramatic poorly acted mess, but it has hit a chord with enough people to gain midnight movie status, along with audience participation a-la Rocky Horror Picture Show.  It is a beast all of its own and it has drawn the love from college stoners to A list actors alike.  Naturally, in the center of the Venn Diagram of these fanbases, lies James Franco.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 2nd, 2018

THE FILM

The threats of terrorism, war, chaos, and financial ruin are all too real these days.  ’The Dark Knight Rises’ dives into these issues on a massive scale, which makes any film in the Marvel universe look like mere “child’s play” (no reference to a knife-wielding murderous doll).  Compared with the other Batman movies, everything is bigger in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and there is so much more at stake.  Not one second of this film is wasted, the writing and direction is straight to the point, cohesive, and comes across as totally fulfilling in its 164 minute run-time.

Jana’s Best of 2017!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 1st, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

I know these “Best of 2017” lists should technically be published in 2017, but why would I start 2018 any differently than I lived the majority of my adult life: Procrastinating and underachieving. What can I say? That’s my wheelhouse.

For a year that put a spotlight on some of the shittiest behavior by some of the Hollywood elite, it was actually a good year for TV and movies. I didn’t limit myself in number because as I moved on with the brackets, I felt like I was making ‘Sophie’s Choice‘ on some of these, so they’re all getting in! I’m feeling my inner-Oprah here, You’ve made the list! You made the list! EVERYBODY made the list!! In order to spare myself any arguments, I’m stating up front that my picks for the “Best of 2017” are not edited in regards to scandal or hideous human behavior.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Atomic Blonde’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 9th, 2017

The Ryan Gosling Jacket Investigation!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 13th, 2017

Written By: Dan Moran….

There have been tweets and style articles written about Ryan Gosling’s jackets over the past year, but after seeing Blade Runner 2049 last night, are we sure he’s ever read a script? Would it really be so ridiculous to assume that almost every role that Ryan Gosling has ever played was based on his agent just laying two jackets out and Ryan deciding which one was better? More importantly, is Ryan Gosling even a good actor? Are we sure his jackets aren’t giving him this power?

An investigation has been opened.

4K UHD Review: Alien: Covenant!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 25th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

THE FILM

We live in a time where all of our favorite films and television programs from decades ago are getting sequels, rebooted, and remade. The ALIEN franchise that we have all come to love over the years has had its share of revamps. Luckily, the original filmmaker Ridley Scott, who made ALIEN back in 1979 came back a few years ago and made an early sequel to the franchise with PROMETHEUS. Clearly, Scott isn’t done telling stories in this horrifying universe, and we now have a sequel with ALIEN: COVENANT, which breathes new life into this stale franchise and promises more sequels and even more scares. What we loved about the original ALIEN is certainly present in a lot of COVENANT.

Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #5!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 27th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

baseball-game-ofotcn

Was Randle McMurphy a hero or an anti-hero. It’s a fine line for sure, but I’d like to think R.P. McMurphy was a good guy deep down, even though he was a bit off-kilter. In fact, it’s been stated and written down many times before that his arch rival Nurse Ratched is one of the most horrific villains in movie history. McMurphy, played by a 30-something Jack Nicholson is an amazing character. He’s passionate, creative, fun, spontaneous, and has no filter with what he thinks or says. Some would say he is a genius in this regard. Hell, he did convince a ton of people that himself and the rest of the psychiatric patients were indeed famous professors and doctors to the townsfolk as they stole a boat and went sailing.

Soundtracks we want to see released on Vinyl!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 15th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

preview

I just love soundtracks to movies. I always have and I believe I always will. There is something about a score to a film that just perks me up in all the right ways and inspires my creative side, whether it be to write a screenplay or go back an watch that old film I love. Music is an integral part to films and is considered to be the mojo of every movie. I’m sure we’ve all seen that odd YouTube video of the final scene in Star Wars: A New Hope, where Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Chewbacca walk down a crowded arena to receive their medals to zero music. It’s super weird and awkward with no music, but just random sound effects of footsteps and a rare cough, laugh, and Chewie’s roar. John Williams did such a great job, as he always does with Star Wars music, but that final scene of music really puts your emotions on full blast. It’s all from the soundtrack too.

Film Review: Churchill!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 2nd, 2017

Audrey E., here…

1200

If you’re expecting a hardy D-day battle of gunfire and malice, you may want to look elsewhere. Ambitious efforts were made to create a heroic biopic and personal portrait of the Prime Minister, but at long last, the result is a cigar-filled melodrama that limps with exaggerated dialogue. Concentrating mostly on diplomacy and tensions between allies, ‘Churchill’ is a strained history lesson that only manages to blow smoke over a fascinating true-life story.

THE FILM

In 1941, Columbia Pictures wanted to make a film that that was current, fun, and had A-List stars. Being the time of World War II and having the iconic actor/dancer Fred Astaire on board, it would seem like the studio had a big hit on their hands with You’ll Never Get Rich, which is a musical comedy that takes place during the war. Even though it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Song, this film doesn’t seem to be thought out or well executed on any level.

The first ‘Marine‘ film came out eleven years ago in 2006 and starred John Cena as a marine who gives the Attitude Adjustment to terrorists. Solid gold entertainment, Jerry. Solid gold. That first film cost $15 million, but only made $22 million at the box office. Blu-ray Review: ‘Poltergeist III’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 13th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

91do0Gkj2GL._SL1500_

THE FILM

The original ‘Poltergeist‘ film was a perfect mix of horror and comedy. It had the minds of Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper behind it and went on to financial and critical success. Of course, they made sequels to make more money, but we’ve often seen that more times than not, these sequels don’t embody the spirit of the original and can come off quite bad. The original film spawned two sequels and a TV Series along with the recent horrible remake. ‘Poltergeist II‘ had its share of great moments, due to the amazing visual effects work and the whole family coming back to reprise their roles, but that’s not the case with ‘Poltergeist III‘, which is no doubt, the worst film in the franchise.

4k UHD Review: ‘Goodfellas’!

THE FILM

By the time 1990 came around, Martin Scorsese had already made several masterpieces in film, which continue to be praised and talked about to this day. With the likes of ‘Raging Bull‘, ‘Taxi Driver‘, and ‘The Last Waltz‘, we all knew that Scorsese was one of the finest filmmakers and storytellers around. Even with just those three previous films mentioned, you’d know you were in for a treat when Scorsese wanted to show you something. Then 1990 came around and Scorsese once again changed the film community with a movie called ‘Goodfellas‘, which was his big foray into the whole mafia genre.

THE FILM

We’ve seen quite a few movies and even TV shows that cover the Pablo Escobar story and his drug cartel over the years. Some have been great where others missed the mark. Here with ‘The Infiltrator‘, you never really see Pablo Escobar, but only in passing as the story follows real-life US agent Robert Mazur or as his undercover name Bob Musella, played by Bryan Cranston, who is no stranger to the drug business (Breaking Bad). Robert Mazur went deep undercover to unlock and take down Pablo Escobar’s drug business, along with his right hand men.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 18th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

51mxxonme-l

THE FILM

Here we are with the final ‘Hunger Games‘ movie again, ‘Mockingjay’ Part II. With splitting the final chapter into two separate films, you’d think there’d be something worth waiting for or at least a big climax. None of that is found here with Part II, despite what anyone else tells you. I understand why the studio wanted to split the final film into two parts, which would garner double the money and profits off of one story, but in order to have a decent story and film, you need it to go somewhere. In this case, anywhere.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 15th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

51em8f0xcl

THE FILM

Things are not looking up for Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in this third installment of Suzanne Collins‘ young adult book series ‘The Hunger Games‘. In an effort to squeeze as much money as they can, the movie studio decided to split the third and final book into two parts, much like the last two ‘Harry Potter‘ films and the recent trilogy of the single book of ‘The Hobbit‘. On one hand, the fans will get two movies. On the other hand, there will be a lot of filler between these two films to stretch them out to their two-hour run time.

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 15th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

THE FILM

This portion of the review was written by Suzanne Loranc.

Everyone can understand that the second movie in any series can be the problematic middle child of a franchise. They tend to suffer between the spellbinding beginning and the satisfying conclusion. However, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire rises above the usual awkward bridge label with excellent performances and a script that remains faithful to the book to make it a movie that could almost stand on its own.

THE FILM

Have you read ‘Hunger Games’?  Do you know what ‘Hunger Games’ is about?  If not you’re in for a real treat.  ‘Hunger Games’ is based on a trilogy of novels by Suzanne Collins.  It’s geared towards young adults.  The premise is a whole lot like ‘Battle Royale’ where a group of young kids or teenagers are picked in a lottery system to battle each other in a designated area until there is only one survivor.

Director Travis Z’s remake of Eli Roth’s cult classic horror flick “Cabin Fever” is a movie that I wanted to like, but could find no redeeming qualities in.  This movie bills itself as a gory, horror-comedy, and fails to provide either scares or laughs.  The acting is wooden, the characters are idiotic and un-relatable and even the gore fails to deliver.   Sigh… I do love me some over-the-top gore, but sadly, the gross-factor was completely lackluster in this film and did nothing to redeem the rest of the movie.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Jungle Book’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 30th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

61Pcq43NUDL

THE FILM

How many renditions have there been of ‘The Jungle Book‘? More than a dozen over the years for sure, and it seems like Disney has more than just one project of ‘The Jungle Book‘ in play at the moment, or shall I say ‘The Jungle Book‘, meaning Disney has one and Warner Bros. has one.  The first project is Jon Favreau’s version, which is a live-action film, based on Rudyard Kipling’s famous book. The film itself is stunningly beautiful, as we see in the first shot of the film, which is deep inside the jungle with the young Mowgli running and hopping through the trees. The use of 3D here was actually quite good, specifically the amount of depth it gave the film and surrounded you with all that is the jungle.

Film Review: ‘Jason Bourne’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 27th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Jason-Bourne-2

Hey now. Matt Damon is back as Jason Bourne in the new film that is simply titled, ‘Jason Bourne‘, which teams up Damon and director Paul Greengrass once again for the spy thriller who seems to never remember who he is or where he came from. In addition to the usual losing sight of Jason Bourne, then spotting him in a big crowd, to losing him once again, the writers added HBO’sSilicon Valley‘ show to the element without all of the fun or comedy. I’ll get to that in a minute though.

Epic List Of The Top 10 Road Trip Flicks!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jul 3rd, 2016

Hey guys, Jana here,

tumblr_nx5wmzgYvb1qewpgqo1_500

Summer means a lot to me, there’s baseball, which I waxed pretty poetic about in last week’s Top 10 Baseball Movies post. There’s fishing, the fourth of July, a multi-colored tongue from Otter Pops, and the all important road trip. Your trip can be a short jaunt to the lake or it can be a days long event that usually culminates in an epic destination – Wally World, anyone? Whether you trip on your own, with your friends or with your family, there’s something wonderful about having a full tank of gas, a stereo full of tunes and the open road in front of you. Depending on who you’re with it can either feel like a hostage situation or a relaxing break from the weekly drag. Most good road trips feel like a bit of both, not to mention the longing for the comfort that is your home toilet.

I’m gonna count down my top 10 movies that feature a road trip. Strap in, kick on the A/C and let the lull of the road below you relaxes your worries. This was not an easy list to winnow down to only 10 with a few honorable mentions. I left off the obvious ‘Thelma and Louise‘, they’re best friends, they kill someone and drive off a cliff. Yeah, I didn’t give you a spoiler alert there because if you haven’t seen this movie by now, you were never going to. Some road trip movies are better than others and we had differing opinions from each other making this list. So read along and tell me where we agree or disagree or what I’ve left out.

A ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Movie? No Fracking Way!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 9th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

Battlestar-Galactica

Mother-fracker! This is excellent news. “So say we all.” Universal is prepping a big screen adaptation of ‘Battlestar Galactica‘…finally. There have been many attempts to do a big screen version based off of Glen Larson’s 1978 TV series, but none have come to fruition. In 2003, a revamp series aired on SyFy, and became one of the BEST series to ever come out on television.

John Boyega Set to Star in ‘Pacific Rim’ Sequel!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 6th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

John_Boyega_97807

Yes, we are finally getting that ‘Pacific Rim‘ sequel we have always wanted, but again, it won’t be directed by Guillmero Del Toro. Instead, it will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight, who is more into TV Series, than films. Actually, this is DeKnight’s first feature film, and a mighty big one at that. DeKnight, Del Toro, and Legendary Pictures have set John Boyega to star in the sequel.

‘The Magnificent Seven’ Trailer is Here!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 20th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

tumblr_inline_o5w945QLTs1td0hds_1280

Last night we showed you images from the film, and today we have an awesome trailer for the remake of ‘The Magnificent Seven‘. The original came out in 1960, which was a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s ‘Seven Samurai‘. Both Kurosawa’s and John Sturges’ films are some of the better films out there in the world, so this remake has big shoes to fill. After watching the trailer, I can say it looks damn fun and what looks like to be a great take on these past classics. This is one of the films that is high on my radar, and it should be on yours too.

leonardo-dicaprio-inline-zoom-e780bd67-8bfe-4cb1-a724-88c8403b9bba

I am a Leonardo DiCaprio fan. I’ve never hidden it, but I am. I wasn’t in love with him and his boyish good looks like other girls my age were, I recognized him from ‘Growing Pains‘, after all. He didn’t begin his career as absolutely gorgeous, that developed over time. I had to learn to love his work for what it was. Saying that, Leo’s been overlooked for that naked, golden, guy many times before he finally won his first Oscar at last night’s award show.

Film Review: ‘Zoolander 2’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 10th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

zoolander

It’s been fifteen years since we saw Derek Zoolander perform on stage in the world of male fashion modeling. That first film, directed by Ben Stiller himself was a brilliant and hilarious satire on the fashion modeling world with a little bit of action and silliness packed in at every corner. ‘Zoolander‘ and many of its characters became instant cult icons. Even many lines of dialogue are still quoted today in everyday life from the first film. Stiller himself has said he’s wanted to do a sequel for the past several years now, but nothing has come together, but one script made it through and everyone signed back on for ‘Zoolander 2‘.

Masters Of The Universe May Have a Director!!!

The idea of a ‘Masters Of The Universe‘ live-action movie has been floating around for years, for me, I’ve been hoping for a reboot since 1987 when Dolph Lundgren killed my love of the cartoon series. Where before there were only little bits of chatter, we’ve got some serious movement now, a director is circling the project.

Film Review: ‘The Visit’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 9th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

the-visit-06

Finally, we have M. Night Shyamlan back in rare form with his new horror-comedy film ‘The Visit‘, which definitely doesn’t look like a Shyamalan movie at all. In fact, this is one of those “found footage” movies that rejuvenates this sub-genre of filmmaking once again. The world was introduced to M. Night Shyamalan back in 1999 with his hit film ‘The Sixth Sense‘, which quickly led the young director to superstardom as one of the coolest and imaginative directors of this modern era. Not only that, but he re-invented the “twist ending” again, which became a trademark of his down the road.

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Wire’ Complete Series!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 2nd, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

THE TV SERIES

HBO ‘sThe Wire‘ might be one of the best television shows to ever be aired on any sort of cable or primetime channel. It’s authenticity to real life Baltimore and the lives of the law enforcement, politicians, and criminals is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. In fact, it’s so realistic and well-acted, that one might for a second think they were watching a documentary. Creator David Simon even hired real life criminals and thugs to be a part of the show to give each episode that realness we can totally see through each season.

The word payback generally means getting someone who has wronged you to see the light and atone for their sins. WWE’s Payback (which could be seen on the WWE Network FREE for the month of May)  more than lived up to the stereotype of the word as the night was filled with retribution and wrongs made right. The power of positivity reigned supreme, false idols were torn down, and what was best for business prevailed. It was a night filled with high impact, hard hitting matches that more than showcased why the WWE Superstars are the best in the world. Did you miss it? No worries, I’ve got your back. Blu-ray Review: ‘Goodfellas’ 25th Anniversary!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 5th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Hey guys, Jana here,

american-sniper-6

In the world of film, there are specific genres that stand out for me and one of those is war movies. I love different titles for a variety of reasons, the story, or even an actor, in this category there is one primary theme that ties each film together – heroes. Their outstanding courage is what gives us that lump in our throats and a swell of patriotic pride that causes us to lift these characters, real or imagined, to elevated heights. It takes a special kind of person to be a hero, I know I couldn’t do it, but I am eternally grateful for the men and women that take up that mantle and defend the lives and freedoms I hold so dearly.
