Hey guys, Jana here,

We’ve been hearing of a planned ‘Sons of Anarchy‘ spinoff series that would focus on the sometimes friend, sometimes foe of the fictional SOA – The Mayans, since the former closed up shop in 2014. Since then it’s just been a “planned spinoff” but there hasn’t been any traction made on the project, until now. We’re a little closer to a final product with an official title, ‘Mayans MC‘, and a new writer.

Kurt Sutter is the man that was behind SOA and all of it’s success, for this project, he’s picked up a co-creator in the form of Elgin James. James will be producing with Sutter and will write the pilot script. Why wouldn’t Sutter just write the script when it’s taking place in the world he originally created for SOA? He wants the project to have an authentic Latino feel to it and Sutter can’t quite do that, but James can. “I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice,”  Sutter said. “Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.”

James had quite a history before he burst onto the film scene at Sundance in 2011 with ‘Little Birds‘. He was a part of Boston’s hardcore punk scene, homeless through his teenage years and was an integral part of the founding of a multi-ethnic national street gang. Once he left that world behind to focus on film,  his past tapped him on the shoulder with a prison sentence from his gang days with a federal extortion charge.

So FX is officially beginning script development on the project that will be the same dark look at the world of a MC that lives in the 1% outlaw shadow. ‘Sons of Anarchy‘ ran for seven seasons and netted the network their highest-rated drama series in all of FX Networks‘ history. Hopefully this will get moving quickly and those of us that hated seeing SOA end can get a fix and probably a new addiction once the series airs.
