Barbie is probably listed on dozens of Christmas wish lists across the world right now and Bold Films is likely thinking that’s a wonderful thing as they prep the origin story for the doll so popular, you have to buy her friends! She’s also got an incredibly unattainable figure which some chick just had six ribs removed to meet those standards, but that’s another story. Where was I? Oh yeah, Barbie’s origin story is making it’s way to the big screen.

‘Barbie and Ruth‘ is going to show us the creator of the most popular doll in the world, Ruth Handler and there’s only one name on the list to bring Handler to life and that name is Reese Witherspoon. The film will draw it’s script from the Robin Gerber book ‘Barbie and Ruth: The Story of the World’s Most Famous Doll and the Woman Who Created Her‘. ‘Barbie and Ruth‘ is less of a mouthful for sure and will follow Handler and her inspiration to create Barbie after seeing her daughter, playing with paper dolls. Daughter, Barbara saw a toy and Ruth saw an empire complete with accessories and anything else a woman could want, including choices. Handler and her husband manufactured their ideas through their toy company, Mattel.

Bruna Papandrea’s Pacific Standard  is on tap to produce with Bold’s Michel Litvak and Witherspoon. Bold’s CEO Gary Michael Walters and Jon Oakes will executive produce with author Gerber and Grace Ledding.
