Few films can weave a storyline around so many actors and cities and still be a huge draw at the box office, I’m giving you the news about one of them today. The series I’m talking about are the Jason Bourne films, starring Matt Damon. We started with ‘The Bourne Identity‘ in 2002, then ‘The Bourne Supremacy’ in 2004, followed by ‘The Bourne Ultimatum‘ in 2007. In 2012, Damon stood aside and cheered Jeremy Renner on as he made the character of Aaron Cross, uniquely his own, with ‘The Bourne Legacy‘. Renner brings to life another character from the expansive world  that writer Robert Ludlum has created that both characters, and a score of others live in.

Technically’The Bourne Legacy‘ would have taken place around the same time ‘The Bourne Ultimatum‘ was going on in 2007. While it has been widely discussed that once Bourne’s character regained his memory there would be no where else for the character to go. I mean that was his motivation all along! It looks like someone, somewhere has figured where Bourne would go once he knows who he is. Not only is there a story idea in place, but Universal Pictures is already trying to make deals with Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass to head up a new Bourne film. This is kind of a surprise announcement being that Greengrass is the one that, only last year, said there was no creative elements for Bourne once he knows his identity.

Not only are they going to give Bourne another film, but they’re also giving up the July 16, 2016 release date that was slated for the Jeremy Renner spinoff sequel. So the Damon-Bourne film will release ahead of the Renner-Bourne film that is taking ‘Fast & Furious‘ director Justin Lin with them on a new release date. Renner’s character plays one of several genetically altered assassins, and of course all marked for death. Universal is making the smart move by sticking to a series that has a dedicated fan base, but they’re broadening the scope of what each film is comprised of, so they can  bring a whole new product to the consumer with only a few films setting the stage.

What will end up happening is at one point, is that Bourne and Cross will bump into each other somehow and then imagine the possibilities for storylines after that!
