Hi, Bryan Here….
Maybe with the success of ‘Django Unchained‘ and the Oscar buzz on ‘12 Years A Slave‘, The History Channel is remaking the 1977 miniseries ‘Roots‘, which was one of the highest viewed television broadcasts in history, and it still is with 100 million viewers. The History Channel purchased the rights to the story from Mark Wolper, who is the son of ‘Roots’ executive producer David L. Wolper.
The network has already begun to develop this new miniseries and will take aspects from the book, the original series, and put it in a contemporary perspective. “We would like to revive that cultural icon for a new audience,” said History EVP and GM Dirk Hoogstra. Even at one point, the FX network was looking to develop this project, but ultimately the History Channel snagged it, according to Deadline.
It’s going to be extremely difficult to remake this, as the original 1977 miniseries was perfect and launched the career of Geordi La Forge…ermm…I mean LeVar Burton. I wonder if they will have in come back for the remake in some kind of capacity. I hope the History Channel does a good job with this. But in my opinion, I don’t think it needs to be remade.
