Hey guys, Jana here,
Disney loves the live-action fairy tale trend as it’s proven by the last few years of their movie catalog, so it’s not surprising they are planning out a slate of movies into the next several years.
Disney is snagging release dates through 2019 and we know what some of those dates will hold. Here’s a run-down of the flicks we know are coming down the pipeline.
‘Cruella‘ starring Emma Stone is a ‘101 Dalmatians‘ spin-off, there are sequels to ‘Jungle Book‘ with director Jon Favreau and writer Justin Marks and ‘Maleficent‘ which Angelina Jolie is set to return along with original screenwriter Linda Woolverton handling scripting duties again.
Other features coming our way is ‘Dumbo‘ from writer Ehren Kruger and Tim Burton who began the live-action trend with ‘Alice in Wonderland‘. The sequel to Alice – ‘Alice Through The Looking Glass‘ will be in theaters in a month on May 27, Burton didn’t opt for the sequel, but James Bobin (‘The Muppets‘) has taken over. We have an adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s ‘A Wrinkle In Time‘ with Ava DuVernay at the helm. The director from ‘My Life as a Dog‘ and writer Ashleigh Powell are putting together ‘The Nutcracker and the Four Realms‘.
Reese Witherspoon is starring in a ‘Tinker Bell‘ project with the writer from ‘Finding Dory‘, Victoria Strouse. Dwayne Johnson will star in ‘Jungle Cruise‘ with writers from ‘Focus‘ John Requa and Glenn Ficarra. Not to mention the sequel to ‘Mary Poppins‘ which is going to be amazing as Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel-Miranda (Broadway’s ‘Hamilton‘ creator) under the direction of on-screen musical genius, Rob Marshall.
It’s worth noting that these are all films in the works and planned, as of now. We know the fickle way the world of the Silver Screen runs and it’s possible some of these could be put off or canceled altogether. One thing is for certain though, Disney has made a huge success of the live-action vehicle and putting aside some major tentpole dates is a smart move and one that other film studios do, as well.
