Episode #187 – Cabin Fever (2002)

Out in the more remote cabins of the horror-podcast ecosystem, where death stalks the airwaves and the smell of damp pine mixes with the faint whirr of a cursed VHS tape, lurks My Bloody Podcast. It exists somewhere between the ghost of a Blockbuster Video and the kind of movie night that ends with everyone Googling “rashes” at two in the morning. Imagine if the Criterion Channel were briefly possessed by a demon, or if your horror-obsessed friend from high school actually followed through on his promise to “start something serious” with his equally deranged, deeply literate pals. That’s the vibe.

Hosted by Bryan Kluger, a man who speaks fluent Freddy and Jason with the academic confidence of a TED Talk delivered entirely in fake blood, My Bloody Podcast is less a show than a weekly séance, which is part horror symposium, and part group therapy for people who find comfort in screaming. Alongside him is Preston Barta, who arrives like a vampire with a PhD, calmly dissecting dread with surgical precision. Then there’s Chelsea Nicole, the cultural critic, scream queen, and walking IMDb of feminist horror who is making sure every shriek, side-eye, and subtextual trauma gets its due.

On Episode #187, Bryan and Preston retreat to the great outdoors, which is never a wise decision in horror, to revisit Eli Roth’s Cabin Fever (2002), which is the film that announced Roth as a new maestro of cinematic misery. Twenty-five years later, they ask the hard questions. Does it still hold up? Was there anything lurking beneath the pus and panic? And what exactly was Roth trying to say about society, viruses, and people who are, frankly, just kind of mean? With Rider Strong and Jordan Ladd along for the ride, the conversation probes whether Cabin Fever was merely gross for grossness’ sake or an early warning flare about contagion, cruelty, and the thin veneer of civilization. Somehow, against all odds, they even find a little good left in the woods.

My Bloody Podcast is a place where horror isn’t merely appreciated. It’s worshipped, flayed open, and lovingly stitched back together. It’s funny, sharp, occasionally unhinged, and oddly comforting, like being told everything is terrible, but at least you’re not alone. Listeners who crave behind-the-scenes industry chatter, unfiltered opinions, and a steady supply of laughs between disembowelments will find themselves happily addicted.
