Out in the Irish haunted hotels of horror podcasts, where every third microphone appears to be broadcasting from a basement illuminated by Halloween lights and unresolved childhood fears, there exists the delightfully unhinged institution known as My Bloody Podcast. It occupies that rare cultural space between a graduate seminar on horror cinema and three friends arguing in a video store that no longer exists.
Some comedians understand horror, and then there are comedians who understand that horror is basically comedy after everyone has stopped laughing. Derek Sheen belongs firmly in the latter category. On Episode #197 of My Bloody Podcast, Bryan and Preston welcome the terrific and genuinely hilarious stand-up comic to the show for a conversation that manages to cover witches, trauma, loneliness, horror movies, Adam Scott, and the eternal question of whether a person can be both handsome and profoundly unpleasant.
Sheen has performed with Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, and plenty of other comics who have figured out that the human condition is mostly an elaborate practical joke. He also happens to have a finely tuned appreciation for dark comedy and horror cinema, which makes him a pretty perfect guest to discuss Hokum, the 2026 horror film from Damian McCarthy, the filmmaker behind Caveat and Oddity.
The three of them take a deep dive into what makes Hokum tick, particularly its fascination with trauma, isolation, loneliness, and the kind of creeping dread that doesn’t require a monster jumping out of a closet so much as the realization that you may simply be alone with your own thoughts. Which, frankly, is horrifying enough.
There’s also Adam Scott, who may be playing one of cinema’s great modern assholes here. A man can play Ben Wyatt and then turn around and make you think, Oh, this guy deserves whatever happens to him in this haunted house.
Before Derek unleashes his new comedy special, Unrelatable, on YouTube, he joins Bryan and Preston for a wonderfully weird, funny, and surprisingly insightful conversation about why horror works, why loneliness is terrifying, and why sometimes the scariest thing in a horror movie is just another human being behaving terribly. It’s funny. It’s dark. It’s thoughtful. There are witches. There is laughter. And there is Adam Scott, who is, perhaps, a gigantic prick in this film.
