Episode #169 – Encino Man (1992)

There are film podcasts that aspire to scholarship, and then there is Fear and Loathing in Cinema, which aspires mainly to survive its own conversations. Think of it as a 2 A.M. diner where the coffee has developed opinions, the fries have entered witness protection, and two friends are discussing cinematic history with the urgency of men who have just discovered that the Constitution may contain a section on buddy-cop movies.

This week, on Episode #169, Bryan Kluger, Marc Ciafardini, and Sandi Glass are thawed from the Ice Age and dropped, somewhat irresponsibly, into 1992 California for Encino Man. You know, the movie that introduced Brendan Fraser to the world and gave Pauly Shore an entire dialect of his own.

We dig into the film’s strange little heart, which is friendship, teenage survival, ’90s fashion, schoolyard hierarchies, the emotional trauma of being a frozen caveman in suburban Los Angeles, and the undeniable magic of Pauly Shore simply being Pauly Shore. It’s silly, sweet, surprisingly heartfelt, and somehow still feels like a time capsule you’d find buried underneath a Blockbuster.

So grab your flannel, your Walkman, and whatever the hell a “weasel” is, and listen wherever you get your podcasts.
