Rainmaker Entertainment and Blockade Entertainment have teamed up to develop a big budget film adaptation of ‘Ratchet & Clank‘, the successful video game franchise from Insomniac Games. The project will be a 3D animated (of course) film that is aiming for a 2015 release. Ratchet & Clank were introduced to people across the globe in 2002 and have spawned several different video games that have totaled over 26 million copies worldwide.

The most recent game, ‘Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault‘ was released late last year. Ratchet is fun “lombax” who looks like a fox/cat mix while Clank is small robot who sports more mental power than muscles. The duo are out to stop an evil alien named Chairman Drek from destroying the entire universe. This movie has the potential to make tons of money.

Jericca Cleland will direct the film from a script by TJ Fixman. Fixman is an employee of Insomniac Games already and has delivered that unique sense of character and humor into his script, according to Variety. As for Cleland, this will be her first big project for her to helm. She worked on Pixar’sFinding Nemo‘ a little bit back in the day, and has been a heavy hand on a TV series called ‘Animism‘. James A. Taylor, David Kaye, and Jim Ward will all be ledning their voices for the film, but we do not know who they will be voicing. These three voice actors have all provided the voices for the main three characters in the game, but I imagine that the studios will want to bring in A-List talent for this one.

“We’ve always thought ‘Ratchet and Clank’ would be a fantastic all-ages movie and are thrilled our intergalactic heroes will finally get their chance to shine on the big screen,” said Ted Price, founder and CEO of Insomniac Games. “Insomniac is especially honored to play a hands-on role with the film’s production, including the screenplay, consulting on character development and animation, and adding support to the film’s marketing.”

I’m curious to see if this video game movie falls into that sad statistic and horrible pile of adapted video game movies, or if it will prove to out shine the rest. It already has an advantage of being in 3D and animated.  Your thoughts?
