THE 10TH VICTIM (BLURAY)

It is the 21st Century, and society’s lust for violence is satisfied by “The Big Hunt,” an international game of legalized murder. But when the sport’s two top assassins (Marcello Mastroianni and Ursula Andress) are pitted against each other, they find that love is the most dangerous game of all. As the world watches, the hunt is on. Who will become THE 10TH VICTIM?  THE 10TH VICTIM is the international cult classic whose wild action and sexy style has influenced a generation of movies, from THE RUNNING MAN to the AUSTIN POWERS series. Remastered from original archival negative materials, this outrageous satire is presented here in its original Italian language with optional English subtitles.  Ursula Andress is just  so hot and amazing.  Somebody make me an art piece of Ursula from this movie.

  • 3 WOMEN (BLURAY CRITERION COLLECTION)

Criterion rolls out the red carpet yet again with ‘3 Women’.   In a dusty, underpopulated California resort town, naive southern waif Pinky Rose (Carrie’s Sissy Spacek) idolizes and befriends her fellow nurse, the would-be sophisticate “thoroughly modern” Millie Lammoreaux (The Shining’s Shelley Duvall). When Millie takes Pinky in as her roommate, Pinky’s hero worship evolves into something far stranger and more sinister than either could have anticipated. Featuring brilliant performances from Spacek and Duvall, this dreamlike masterpiece from Robert Altman (Short Cuts) careens from the humorous to the chilling to the surreal, resulting in one of the most unusual and compelling films of the 1970s.  Good stuff here.

  • BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER: THE MOVIE (1992) (BLURAY)

Before the hit tv series, it was originally a movie.  And it was amazing.  Donald Sutherland, Luke Perry, Pee-Wee Herman, and Kristy Swanson starred in the cult film.  This movie is still great. A flighty teenage girl learns that she is her generation’s destined battler of vampires.  Just love this movie.  I want an ultimate edition of this film soon.  Do it.  Fuck you ‘Twilight’.  For all of you cunty hipsters, take a break from yourself and watch a real and amazing teenage vampire film with Buffy.

    CAMELOT: COMPLETE 1ST SEASON (BLURAY)

Pretty damn good show.  In the wake of King Uther’s sudden death, chaos threatens to engulf Britain. When the sorcerer Merlin has visions of a dark future, he installs the young and impetuous Arthur, Uther’s unknown son and heir, who has been raised from birth as a commoner. But Arthur’s cold and ambitious half sister Morgan will fight him to the bitter end, summoning unnatural forces to claim the crown in this epic battle for control. These are dark times indeed for the new king, with Guinevere being the only shining light in Arthur’s harsh world. Faced with profound moral decisions, and the challenge of uniting a kingdom broken by war and steeped in deception, Arthur will be tested beyond imagination. Forget everything you think you knowthis is the story of Camelot that has never been told before.  Too bad this got cancelled.

CITIZEN KANE: 70TH ANNIVERSARY ULTIMATE COLLECTOR’S EDITION (BLURAY)

Quite a few respected film critics say this is their number one favorite film of all time.  I don’t see it.  Yes, it is amazing and good, but the #1 film of all time?  Bullshit.  Orson Welles’ timeless masterwork (#1 in the American Film Institute’s 1998 list of Best American Movies) is more than a groundbreaking film. Presented here in a magnificent 60th anniversary digital transfer with revitalized digital audio from the highest quality surviving elements (Disc One), it is also grand entertainment, sharply acted (starting many of Welles’ Mercury Players on the road to thriving film careers) and superbly directed with inspired visual flair. Depicting the controversial life of an influential publishing tycoon, this Best Original Screenplay Academy Award® winner (1941) is rooted in themes of power, corruption, vanity — the American Dream lost in the mystery of a dying man’s last word: “Rosebud.”  Definitely great to have this on bluray.

  • CONAN O’ BRIEN CAN’T STOP (BLURAY)

After a much-publicized departure from hosting NBC’s Tonight Show – and the severing of a 22-year relationship with the network – O’Brien hit the road with a 32-city music-and-comedy show to exercise his performing chops and exorcise a few demons. The “Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour” was O’Brien’s answer to a contractual stipulation that banned his appearance on television, radio and the Internet for six months following his last show. Filmmaker Rodman Flender’s resulting documentary, Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop, is an intimate portrait of an artist trained in improvisation, captured at the most improvisational time of his career. It offers a window into the private writers room and rehearsal halls as O’Brien’s “half-assed show” (his words) is almost instantly assembled and mounted to an adoring fan base.  Must see. Must own.

  • THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO (BLURAY)

Classic tale of revenge and escape and love.  A young man, falsely imprisoned by his jealous “friends,” escapes and uses a hidden treasure to exact his revenge.  This version out of the many versions that exist is a pretty good and fair treatment of the story.  Tons of extras.

  • THE FRIGHTENERS (BLURAY)

FUCK YES!!  Michael J. Fox and Peter Jackson together for a ghost horror/comedy film.  Before Lord of the Rings, there was The Frighteners.  Such an amazing film.   In the sleepy little town of Fairwater, a monstrous evil has awakened…an evil so powerful, its reach extends beyond the grave. Director PeterJackson and Executive Producer Robert Zemeckis unleash a riveting thriller with the most spectacular special effects this side of the hereafter. For Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox), death is a greatway to make a living: ridding haunted houses of their “unwelcome” guests.” But he’s in cahoots withthe very ghosts he promises to evict! It’s the perfect scam…until Frank finds himself at the center of a dark mystery. A diabolical spirit is on a murderous rampage, and the whole town believes Frank is behind it. Boasting music by Danny Elfman and co-starring Trini Alvarado, Jeffrey Combs and John Astin, this supernatural chiller is so fiendishly entertaining, it’s scary!  I love how this film went from completely terrifying to comedic gold in a split second.  So amazing.  Must own.

  • HALLOWEEN II (BLURAY)

In anticipation for everyone’s favorite holiday, Halloween II is available.   Picking up precisely where its predecessor left off, Halloween II follows the same ill-fated characters as they encounter the knife-wielding maniac they left for dead in the first Halloween. It seems the inhuman Michael Myers is still very much alive and out for more revenge as he stalks the deserted halls of the hospital where his sister (Jamie Lee Curtis) lays waiting. As he gets closer and closer to his terrified target, Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) discovers the chilling mystery behind the crazed psychopath’s savage actions. Written by horror masters John Carpenter (‘The Thing’) and Debra Hill (‘Escape from New York’), Halloween II is a spine-tingling dark ride into the scariest night of the year.

  • HESHER (BLURAY)

Get this film.  Fucking amazing movie.  See it. Own It. Love it.  Loud music. Pornography. Burning shit to the ground. These are a few of Hesher’s favorite things. And they are what Hesher (Joseph Gordon Levitt) brings into the lives of TJ (Devin Brochu) and his father, Paul (Rainn Wilson) when he takes up residence in their garage uninvited. Grief-stricken by the loss of TJ’s mother in a car accident, Paul can’t muster the strength to evict the strange squatter, and soon the long-haired, tattooed Hesher becomes a fixture in the household. Like a force of nature, Hesher’s anarchy shakes the family out of their grief and helps them embrace life once more.

  • THE HILLS HAVE EYES (2006)(BLURAY)

A decent revamp of the Wes Craven brutal film of the same name.  Same story line and some great gore and over the top violence.  A cross-country road trip takes a deadly turn in this spine-tingling remake of Wes Craven’s classic horror masterpiece about a stranded family that falls prey to a freakish clan of bloodthirsty mutants in the New Mexico desert. Packed with gut-wrenching gore, ghastly makeup effects and heart-stopping suspense, The Hills Have Eyes will keep you on the edge of your seat – and your sanity!  A great addition to the Halloween month lineup.

IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA: COMPLETE 6TH SEASON (BLURAY)

One of the funniest shows on television right now.  Plus the new season starts in a couple of days.  I can’t wait.  If you have not seen this show, I highly recommend taking a weekend and watching it.  You will hurt from laughter.  These comedic actors are brilliant.  I wish I could go on set for a day and witness the genius that goes on.  Love this show.

  • MANHUNTER (BLURAY)

Now you can get the origin of Hannibal Lecter on bluray in this individual release.  Before you would have had to purchase the entire set.  Great film.  FBI agent Will Graham (William Petersen) has captured the diabolical Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Brian Cox), nearly losing more than just his mind in the process. But when Graham is called out of retirement to hunt the psychopath known as “The Tooth Fairy” (Tom Noonan in a role Entertainment Weekly calls “one of the freakiest madmen Hollywood has ever given us”) he must once again confront the horrors of “Hannibal The Cannibal.” If Will Graham enters the mind of the serial killer, can he ever come back?  Joan Allen (The Contender), Dennis Farina, Kim Greist and Stephen Lang co-star in this shocking thriller directed by Michael Mann and adapted from the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. But be warned: Fans and critics alike consider Manhunter to be far superior to The Silence Of The Lambs, as well as one of the most unnerving serial killer movies ever made.

    MEEK’S CUTOFF (BLURAY+DVD)

Have not seen this but I am greatly intrigued.  Great cast including: Michelle Williams, Bruce Greenwood, and Paul Dano.  The year is 1845, the earliest days of the Oregon Trail, and a wagon team of three families has hired the mountain man Stephen Meek to guide them over the Cascade Mountains. Claiming to know a short cut, Meek leads the group on an unmarked path across the high plain desert, only to become lost in the dry rock and sage. Over the coming days, the emigrants must face the scourges of hunger, thirst and their own lack of faith in each other s instincts for survival. When a Native American wanderer crosses their path, the emigrants are torn between their trust in a guide who has proven himself unreliable and a man who has always been seen as the natural enemy. Looking forward to checking this out.  Any of you out there seen this movie?

MY LIFE AS A DOG (BLURAY CRITERION COLLECTION)

I fucking love this film.  Criterion yet again knocks it out of the park with this bluray release.  My Life as a Dog (Mitt liv som hund) tells the story of Ingemar, a twelve-year-old from a working-class family sent to live with his uncle in a country village when his mother falls ill. There, the boy finds both refuge from his misfortunes and unexpected adventure with the help of the town’s warmhearted eccentrics. Featuring an incredibly mature and unaffected performance from the young Anton Glanzelius, this is a beloved and bittersweet evocation of the struggles and joys of childhood from Oscar-nominated director Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules).  Highly recommended and a must own.  Do it.  Tons of great extras.

    EXTRAS

  • Shall We Go to My or Your Place or Each Go Home Alone? (1973), a fifty-two-minute film by Hallström
  • Video interview with Hallström from 2003
  • Original theatrical trailer
  • A booklet featuring an essay by film critic Michael Atkinson and an appreciation by the late author Kurt Vonnegut

  • O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? (BLURAY)

One of the written film ever made.  I love everything about this movie.  THe music is exceptionally great and the comedy and acting is top notch.  George Clooney (The Perfect Storm) and John Turturro (Cars 2) embark on the adventure of a lifetime in this hilarious, offbeat road picture. And now, for the first time, this quirky gem shines more brightly than ever in Blu-ray High Definition!  Fed up with crushing rocks on a prison farm in Mississippi, the dapper, silver-tongued Ulysses Everett McGill (Clooney) busts loose…except that he’s still shackled to two misfits from his chain gang: bad tempered Pete (Turturro) and sweet, dimwitted Delmar (Tim Blake Nelsen) With nothing to lose and buried loot toregain, the three embark on a riotous odyssey filled with chases, close calls, near misses and betrayal. Experience every unpredictable moment as it plays out in the crystal-clear sound and breathtaking picture quality of Blu-ray. Populated with strange characters, including a blind prophet, sexy sirens and a one-eyed Bible salesman (John Goodman), O Brother, Where Art Thou will leave you laughing at every outrageous and surprising twist and turn!  MUST OWN.  MUST OWN. MUST OWN.

  • THE TEMPEST (BLURAY)

The sorceress Prospera spirals through vengeance to forgiveness as she reigns over a magical island, cares for her young daughter, Miranda, and unleashes her powers against shipwrecked enemies.  This film is pretty decent.  Great cast and good plot here and there.  Worth catching and it looks phenomenal on bluray.

    EXTRAS

  • Russell Brand rehearsal riff
  • Music video: Reeve Carney, “O Mistress Mine”
  • THOR (3D BLURAY+2D BLURAY+DVD+DIGITAL COPY)

I really enjoyed Thor.  I thought it was classy and a great story.  Thor is great.  It’s very different from the past Marvel films, but different is very good.  Especially for a hero like Thor.  What makes Thor different from the other Marvel Super-Heroes in films is that Thor is not from Earth nor is he really a human.  He is a GOD.  And when I think of Thor my brain usually goes to the Greek Mythology place and to that Shakespearean universe.  So it was only too perfect that Shakespearean vet, Kenneth Branagh would be the director for this epic film of Thor.   The powerful but arrogant warrior Thor is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.

    EXTRAS

  • Audio commentary by director Kenneth Branagh
  • Marvel One-Shot: The Consultant, Road to the Avengers
  • 11 Deleted Scenes with Optional Commentary (7 Blu-ray exclusive)

  • TRAINSPOTTING (BLURAY+DIGITAL COPY)

This film is so amazing on every level.  Also it is a completely fucked up thrill ride on every level as well.  Danny Boyle is one magnificent filmmaker.  Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor), a young man with few prospects and fewer ambitions, lives in economically depressed Edinburgh. Like most of his friends, Renton is a heroin addict who loves the drug’s blissful nothingness; financing his habit also provides excitement and challenges that his life otherwise lacks. Renton’s two best friends are also junkies: Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), a snappy dresser obsessed with James Bond, and Spud (Ewan Bremner), a guileless nerd who suggests Pee Wee Herman’s debauched cousin. Renton and his pals also hang out with Begbie (Robert Carlyle), a borderline psychotic who loathes junkies even though he drinks like a fish. After one too many brushes with the law, Renton kicks heroin and moves to London, where he finds a job, a flat, and something close to peace of mind. However, Sick Boy, Begbie, and Spud all arrive at his doorstep on the trail of a big score, leading Renton back into drugs and crime.  Must own.  Highly recommended.  Looks amazing on bluray.
