Hi Bryan Here….
I remember when I was around 11 years old and a friend or two of mine would walk to the local “mom & pop” video store and rent videos during the summer and have movie marathons all day. Now we were very avid horror and exploitation fans. Even at that early age. We picked up Troma films, Argento films, early Raimi films, and pretty much any title that had explicit violence, horror, or nudity. “Hobo With A Shotgun” is pure exploitation “over the top” badass fun.
Now I wish that I was around the 11 years of age when I watched this the other week. If I would have seen this movie when I was that young, it would be the film that got me into making films. A life changer. A movie that would have stayed with me throughout my entire lifetime. But since I am almost 30, I believe I will always remember this film, but it will not have a huge impact like I thought or hoped it would as if I were younger and discovering what films could be like.
So this movie really came to be by a filmmaker named Jason Eisener who made this short trailer for a film about a Hobo who has had it up to here with all the scum and villainy on the street, and becomes kind of a hero.It may have been two minutes long, but it was only a trailer. So some of the right people saw the film and wham-bam it gets greenlit for a major motion picture with Rutger “MOTHERFUCKING” Hauer as the Hobo with a shotgun.
What I like most about this movie is that , the filmmakers and the movie itself know exactly what this movie is and is gong to be. It doesn’t try to be something else it’s not. If you have seen the trailer for the film or the poster, then you know exactly what you are getting into. Some high octane violence, nudity, blood and guts. There are no underlined tones or themes to the movie. Just some awesome images to blow your mind.
The plot is simply said in the title of the film. “HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN”. A hobo (Rutger Hauer) drops in off the train into another “down the tubes” city where crime and drugs, and violence are the law for the most part. The town is run by a stark raving mad family who promote live violent entertainment and will easily kill anyone who opposes them or just happen to be walking by. The hobo keeps to his business and watches in disgust all the terrible things happening around him. He gets involved here and there, but nothing too extravagant. We follow the hobo as he tries to make money honestly so he can save up enough film to buy a lawnmower at the local pawn shop so he can start a business with mowing yards. The Hobo does some grueling hardcore stunts to get the last of his money, but he does and he goes to purchase his lawnmower. However, just as he is about to pay for it, some evil thugs enter the pawn store and rob the place and threaten to kill all the women and children inside first. “SWITCH FLIPPED”. The hobo loses his shit and rightly takes a shotgun instead of the lawnmower and saves the day. The hobo befriends Abby, a whore with a heart of gold, who is being pursued by crazy family that runs the town. Did I mention the town is called FUCK TOWN. Yah. Awesome. It seems nobody can stop this mad family from killing and destroying everything for their own sick personal entertainment, except A “HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN”. From here on out, the gratuitous violence and nudity and gore run rampant. Nothing is hidden. Strap in and hang on for a hilarious violent ride. One scene that stuck out, that I don’t recall ever seeing was that the crazy evil family which is comprised of a father and his two sons, enter a school bus full of elementary school children. The two sons are packing weapons one of which is a flame thrower and yes, it does happen. All the children go out by way of extreme fire from the flame thrower. My mouth was on the floor.
This movie is a belly full of non-stop exploitation fun that will keep you screaming “WOW” or “HOLY SHIT” throughout the film. This will be best watched with tons of your friends late at night or at a midnight screening with the coolest of cool audiences at your local theatre. I really hope this film becomes the cult classic it deserves to be. This will hopefully be among the great midnight screenings with Rocky Horror Picture Show or Repo: The Genetic Opera, or Truck Turner. I would also hope this movie paves the way for some young filmmakers to get their friends together and make some great splatter films. Truly inspirational filmmaking! This is a whole lot of fun and Rutger Hauer just owns every second of this film.
Get out and see this movie when it comes out on May 6th.
