Hi Bryan Here….

There are not a lot of reviews yet for this movie, but the ones I have seen so far have not been good at all.  I whole heartedly disagree with all of these critics.  This ‘Smurfs’ movie was surprisingly a whole lot of fun, great, and funny.  I was not expecting that at all.  The mix between the CG and real world is amazing.  And Hank Azaria’s performance as Gargamel is spectacular.  He has proven once again he is one of the greatest character actors of our time. This movie will be fun for the whole family with everyone of every age enjoying it.

Yes I did enjoy this movie.  I really did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did.  I think you will get a kick out of this movie.  So the movie starts off in the mystical Smurf village with their famous song.  The CG is amazing on this film.  They really took their time to make it look sincere and realistic.  It reminded me of the first scene of the Hobbits in the Shire from Lord of the Rings.  There was even a Smurf with a newscaster voice narrating life in the Smurf village.  It was pretty great and funny to see.  Then we see Gargamel, which is playing with marionette puppets of the smurfs.  It is quite amusing.  He even makes the joke of “why are there thousands of smurf men and only one smurf girl?”  It was really funny.  So Gargamel and his evil cat want to destroy the Smurfs and head off to the Smurf village to do just that.  As the Smurfs are escaping, our main Smurf which is Clumsy Smurf opens a portal to another world and a few of the Smurfs get sucked into the portal tunnel along with Gargamel and his crazy evil cat.  They end up in New York City in America on Earth.  And now the portal is closed and cannot open again unless there is a blue moon.  So now we have Clumsy, Smurfette, Papa, Grouchy, Brainy, and some sort of brave Scottish daredevil smurf all in NYC.

This is where we meet Patrick Winslow played by the great Neil Patrick Harris.  He plays a jr. executive for an advertising company who is hellbent on getting a big promotion.  His boss is the beautiful Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) who constantly berates Winslow and his good work.  Winslow is consumed with work and has of recently not been the best husband to his wife and soon to be born child.  The Smurfs accidentally hitch a ride with Winslow and end up in his home.  Winslow and his wife realize Smurfs exist and they begin to help each other out with getting the Smurfs back home.  That is the basic plot of the film.

The 3D aspect of the film was okay.  I’m not a huge fan of 3D films, but this one actually made me jump in one scene.  Usually in 3D films, objects fly out of the screen at you, but in one particular moment of the film, a vacuum was being used to suck Smurfs in and capture them, so objects were flying from behind you towards the screen.  I thought it was a bug.  It made me jump.  Easily the best part of this movie is Hank Azaria’s performance of Gargamel.  It is spot on and hilarious.  Every time he was not on screen, I was looking forward to him coming back on.  It was brilliant.  And Azrael, Gargamel’s cat steals the show.  Azrael will hilarious.  This was a whole-hearted fun film.  Take the family and see it.  I did genuinely enjoy The Smurfs.  I’m sure there will be a sequel.  Go see this movie.
