Anytime I see a horror movie that no one has ever heard of before, I get very nervous it is going to be an awful waste of time. Not that people didn’t work hard to put something on screen but because it is clear that the creator didn’t care enough to put something remotely decent on screen. I can handle a bad movie when it doesn’t work for me and rate it as such. When a movie is just so poorly constructed and thought out? I hate it.
Inoperable is a lazy man’s horror Groundhog Day but without the wit or self-awareness of Happy Death Day which operates the same general plot. Inoperable takes place in a hospital during the approach of a hurricane. This hospital isn’t normal and seems abandoned with the exception of the very talented skeleton crew of surgeons trying to kill the main character for reasons that escape me. Here is the kicker, the main character Amy is also time traveling from the past back to the hospital in some sort of loop. She keeps waking up in her car which is in traffic during the hurricane evacuation.
The movie does its best on a shoestring budget to cram as much gore as possible into several scenes. Plenty of half-finished brain surgeries and doctors with the surgical technique of Freddy Kruger leave plenty of remains and innards for the camera to linger on. The director and prop crew definitely made a Costco run before they started filming, because I swear I saw a hot dog covered in fake blood in one of the scenes. Unless of course the patient/victim/person who was disemboweled was a World Champion competitive eater and had just finished a hot dog eating contest prior to getting stuck in this hospital. Actually, how did these other patients get trapped in this hospital? At one point another character surmises to Amy that this place and the time loops might be hell. I agree it was hell to watch this.
Ultimately the side effects of this unexplained time loop cause confusion for poor Amy but this only serves to anger viewers even more as the “mystery” is easy to solve and we have to endure our protagonist act stupid for a few more scenes. I really wouldn’t recommend anyone watch this film. If you told me that someone was given an abandoned hospital, no script, and 3 days to shoot? I’d give this movie a B+ but I have no indication that was the case. Skip Inoperable unless it is free and your streaming service removes every other movie in their library.
