Hey guys, Jana here,
Todd McFarlane gives us a few things we can look forward to from his big screen adaptation of ‘Spawn‘. This news comes from Comic Con in New York where the comic book creator lets us know just how excited he is for the film. ‘Spawn‘ is set to enter pre-production around the first of the year for a February production start.
One thing we know is the film will be R-Rated, not just a little nudity and a few F-bombs, but fucking dark and R-Rated. If you are wondering if ‘Spawn‘ will leave you with nightmares after you see it, McFarlane all but guarantees them.
Another thing McFarlane promises, is daily shooting updates via Facebook, this will get fans up close to see the day-in-day-out events that life on set consists of. One of the reasons he can guarantee things like this is because he’s controlling the budget which is set at a hard $10 million. He’s recently teamed up with Jason Blum of Blumhouse, which means that Universal has a first-look option on the film, they might take it, they might not, but another studio would be happy to bring it under their banner, regardless.
Where Universal might balk at picking up the project is they won’t have control from a creativity or financial stand-point, they just need distribution and marketing. This means there isn’t going to be any ownership stake in it for the film company. One thing is for sure this is McFarlane’s baby. He wrote the comic, wrote the script last year, is financing the film and directing it. Does he care if it’s not a blockbuster? “I’m spending my own money so who cares if it doesn’t work out. It’s a $10 million budget movie, and (a studio) would just get a 22-year-old punk director. I just want to be the old punk directing it.”
