Hi, Bryan Here….
Director Sofia Coppola is taking a new approach to her career in moving away from the more adult themes to a straight-on kids movie. She is signing her contract to direct a live-action adaptation of ‘The Little Mermaid‘ for Universal Pictures. The goal for this project is to fast track it to hopefully compete in 2015. Sofia has kids now, and like so many actors who are parents, tend to do more kid-centric films because of their little ones. Seems like Sofia is no different.
So far we know that Caroline Thompson is re-writing the script. Thompson was a writer on ‘Edward Scissorhands‘. Previous drafts of the script were written by Kelly Marcel (‘50 Shades of Grey‘) and Abi Morgan (‘Shame‘) with at one point Joe Wright (‘Pride and Prejudice‘ and ‘Atonement‘) directing. But Wright has moved on to make one of the dozen Peter Pan films coming out in the next two years.
As far as Coppola goes, she brought us ‘The Virgin Suicides‘, ‘The Bling Ring‘, ‘Lost in Translation‘, and ‘Marie Antoinette‘. As you can see, this ‘Little Mermaid‘ project is out of her realm. The film will focus on a mermaid who makes a magical deal to gain legs to make a hot young guy fall in love with her, but at a price. No word on if Flounder the fish or Sebastian the crab will be involved.
