May/2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Ole Bornedal is bringing the world a new possession film, and the movie poster and trailer definitely have merit.  At least it’s not one of those found footage films either.  The synopsis says: “A young girl buys an antique box at a yard sale, unaware that inside the collectible lives a malicious ancient spirit. The girl’s father teams with his ex-wife to find a way to end the curse upon their child.”  So, I guess I’m not buying anything creepy at a yard sale from now on.

Movie Box Office Weekend Roundup

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 19th, 2010

Ben Affleck is on top again at the box office.  His movie “The Town: starring himself and John Hamm from the AMC series “Mad Men” is number 1 at the box office this weekend bringing in almost $24 million dollars.

Coming in at number 2 is the teen comedy “Easy A”.  This movie is loosely based on the classic novel “The Scarlet Letter”.  It brought in a little over $18 million dollars.  It only had a budget of $8 million.  So kudos there.  Read Cowdefender’s review HERE.

At number 3 is the M. Night Shyamalan film “Devil” bringing in a little over $12.5 million dollars.  This is the first in  series of films thought up by M. Night Shyamlan who other people write and direct.  Supposed to be a creepy film.  Read Cowdefender’s review HERE.

Resident Evil: Afterlife went from the top spot last week to number 4 this week bringing in $10 million for a combined two week total of $44 million dollars.

George Clooney’s “The American” went from the number 3 spot to the number 7 spot this week bringing in about $2.7 million dollars for a combined three week total of  about $32.8 million dollars.

In a surprising movie, the blockbuster hit “Inception” went from being number 10 last week to number 8 this week bringing in a little over $2 million dollars for a combined 10 week total of a little over $285 million dollars.

Machete came in at number 10 bringing in $1.7 million dollars for a combined 3 weeke total of about $25 million dollars which has surpassed its budget.  Hopefully this means sequel.

Also something to note is Sly Stallone’s “The Expendables”.  It came in at number 12 bringing in $1.4 million dollars for a combined 6 week total of $101 million dollars.  That is an uber violent rated “R” film bringing in that much money.  Kudos Sly.  Kudos.

That’s it for this week.  Stay tuned for next weekend.

Cowdefender Meets The Devil (Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 18th, 2010

I want you all to welcome a new reviewer for Boomstick Comics.  He hails from the great lands of Kansas City.  He is a super lawyer by day and a crime fighter by night and he is known as Cowdefender.  He has seen M. Night’s first film in The Night Chronicles which M. Night did not write or direct, but only produced.  What do you people think about the movie?

“More people are going to like this than M. Night’s last couple of outings. Even wikipedia makes it clear that many regard M. Night to be a better director than screenwriter. Devil was a story of M. Night’s that was given to a different screenwriter. So, I’d say it worked. Devil was well written and well directed. There were a few lines that struck the audience as a bit cheesy and a bit on the nose to explain the film from within the film, they consistently fed these lines to a single character and all the other characters responded appropriately to what he was saying. I felt that aspect worked just fine.

The film was appropriately engaging, tense and compelling. It kept me guessing. Of course that aspect makes it hard to say much. It should be noted that a considerable amount of the movie takes place outside of the elevator. Sure those folk are stuck in the elevator, but this isn’t like the Phonebooth film or the coming Ryan Reynolds flick. I mention this because that was something that made me hesitant to see Devil, I just wasn’t entirely down with seeing these people hanging out in an elevator for 90 minutes, so fortunately this isn’t what was forced upon me.

I don’t scare easily at all, but the movie is creepy and the women in the theater definitely seemed to be appropriately hit by it. Also as expected I got to listen to teenage boys proudly boast that they knew all along. I do recommend it, it isn’t a must see and it’s encouraging for the future of M. Night.”

Devil gets a 7 of 10.

Unbreakable 2 Is Going To Happen

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 3rd, 2010

M. Night Shyamalan sat down with MTV and discussed his Night Chronicles.  First one being the upcoming horror film “DEVIL“.  You have probably seen the trailer with everyone trapped on the elevator.  There will be three movies from this Night Chronicles series.  The second film in this series will be called “Twelve Strangers” which will be about a jury dealing with a case of the supernatural.  Sounds like a horror film of “Twelve Angry Men”.  And the third film will be Unbreakable 2.

Now with these movies, M. Night is not writing them nor directing them which will probably make tons of people happy given his recent efforts.  I differ though.  I liked all of his films with the exception of Lady in the Water and the most recent Airbender film.  Yes I even liked The Happening.

Here is an exceprt of what M. Night said.

“I cannibalized the idea for the sequel to ‘Unbreakable’ for one of the ‘Night Chronicles,’” revealed Shyamalan.

“It was such a cool idea for a villain, and it was actually originally in the script for ‘Unbreakable,’ and it was too much,” he said of his reasons for excising the element that was intended to become “Unbreakable 2.” “There were too many villains, so I pulled this villain out and was like, ‘I’ll make this the second flick. I fleshed it out more and more, and thought, ‘This could be a standalone movie.”

I always thought that Unbreakable was one of the best films to come out in the last decade.  I still stand by that.
