In the ever-growing graveyard of horror podcasts, where the air smells faintly of fake blood and nostalgia for late-night video-store aisles, My Bloody Podcast has released another bonus episode, the kind that feels less like programming and more like a pleasant ambush.
This time, Bryan Kluger and Preston Barta welcome the ever-game Mena Suvari, who arrives bearing fangs and stories from her new film, Vampires of the Velvet Lounge. Suvari, who first scorched herself into the pop-culture psyche in American Pie and later drifted, ghostlike and unforgettable, through American Beauty, has since built the sort of career that zigzags cheerfully between cult oddities and studio landmarks, stops along the way including Sugar & Spice, Loser, and Spun.
The new film is a velvet-draped bloodbath, one of the more enthusiastically gory spectacles Kluger and Barta claim to have seen in quite some time, which, given their professional hobbies, is saying something. It also features the welcome return of Stephen Dorff to vampire territory, lending the proceedings a faintly nostalgic bite. The film itself walks a jaunty tightrope between dark comedy, bruising action, and horror, all with a smoky, jazz-noir swagger.
Suvari joins the show to discuss the film’s operatic carnage, the peculiar pleasures of working in horror, and an unexpected new passion, stunt work. If she sounds suspiciously enthusiastic about throwing herself into the occasional fight scene or tumble, that’s because she is.
The result is a conversation that’s bloody, funny, and surprisingly charming, and is best enjoyed wherever you get your podcasts, preferably before heading out to see Vampires of the Velvet Lounge in theaters.
