Film Review: ‘Wolves’!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Nov 1st, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

wolves-poster01

Halloween is in the air, which brings to mind all of the ghosties, goblins and furry beasties. Werewolves have been neutered in mainstream media lately. All you have to do is check out a ‘Twilight’ flick to see the new lows the monsters have come to. That is what they used to be – monsters – they’ve been romanticized the way vampires always have been and it’s changed the way I perceive them and I hate that.

Jana’s Film Review of ‘Horns’!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Oct 28th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

Horns-Character-Posters-Revealed

Daniel Radcliffe has distanced himself from the boy wizard he used to be and kicked type-casting in the teeth. He’s taken the theater world by storm appearing nude for ‘Equus‘, he’s led the show singing and dancing in ‘How To Achieve In Business Without Really Trying‘. From there he’s added to his film resume with the creepy ‘The Woman In Black‘, he was cast as Alen Ginsberg in ‘Kill Your Darlings‘ that was taken from true events. Radcliffe was paired with Jon Hamm to play the younger doctor to Hamm’s older doctor in ‘A Young Doctor’s Notebook‘, and grew horns from his head for the aptly titled ‘Horns‘.

Film Review: ‘The Guest’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 17th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

the-guest-dan-stevens-1-600x400

Filmmakers Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett have struck gold again. They pleased critics and genre fans alike with last year’s slaughter fest ‘You’re Next‘ and made great entries into the ‘V/H/S‘ franchise. Their new film ‘The Guest‘, which Wingard directed and Barrett wrote, is one of the most entertaining films of the year. Not only that, but Wingard and Barrett single handedly revitalized the horror genre with this movie. It’s a hit to the nostalgic testicles that will make you fall to your knees and yell for joy.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Pumpkinhead’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 8th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

artwork-revealed-for-blu-ray-release-of-pumpkinhead

THE FILM

Would you say “Pumpkinhead‘ three times in the dark in front of a mirror? Of course you would, because you haven’t been a bad girl or boy, have you? I remember seeing ‘Pumpkinhead‘ on VHS back when it came out in the late 80s and fell in love with the horrifying creature known as Pumpkinhead, despite some of the movie’s flaws. Hell, I even owned several of they action figures and toys of Pumpkinhead over the years and every time I come across it in my house, I think, “I better be a good person or Pumkpkinhead will come after me.” Well at least that is what I thought when I was younger. But what most interested me, was the creature itself. And that’s where the late, great legend Stan Winston comes into play.

Alright YouTubers, listen up! If you want to make a real, honest-to-God film with professional cameras, this opportunity is just for you! Legendary Entertainment has entered into a working relationship with YouTube that is an entirely new approach to the film making world. The duo are collaborating on ‘YouTube Space House of Horrors: A Legendary Halloween’. It’s getting into the fall, leaves MIGHT be falling from trees, if you’re in the mid-west like I am, leaves are dying off of heat exhaustion, but no matter how it happens, fall is approaching. Where you get fall, you get Halloween.

Top 10 List of Reboots We Don’t Want To See!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 8th, 2014

Paul N., Here…

Terminator-5-TV-Series

Like Bill Murray once said, “he’s got to be stopped. And I have to stop him.” You might have thought he was talking about a weather-predicting rodent, but no, he was actually talking about studio executives (the “he” is collective). Hollywood, like any business, is in it to make money. Therefore, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that they choose to rehash tried and true film formulas over and over again rather than take a chance on something new. While this is understandable (albeit infuriating), it doesn’t excuse the idea that EVERYTHING deserves to be re-made. Some films, like priceless art, should never be re-made and re-sold. Every time a classic film gets re-made, audiences hold their collective breaths and hope that it won’t be a straight shot in “the feels” (that nostalgic part of your brain that remembers, with fondness, all your pop culture favorites).

Michael “explosion” Bay is releasing his latest bastardization of 80’s culture unto the world in the shape of the beloved “heroes in a half shell”. In case you haven’t been following, this has been one cluster mess after another. From alien origins to white-washed villains, this movie begs the questions: “does Michael Bay hate the 80’s? Did he have some traumatically horrific experience with toys when he was a kid? Why does he have to take a giant dump on our collective fond memories time after time?”  Read the rest of this entry »

Film Review: ‘I Origins’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 23rd, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan  Here…

13901-3

Director/writer Mike Cahill instantly became one of my favorite directors with his 2011 film ‘Another Earth‘. That breakout hit film was so original and beautifully made with an excellent performance by the beautiful Brit Marling and an well crafted screenplay, that it easily made it’s way into my Top 10 films of 2011, and is one film that I still watch often three years later. Now we are in 2014 and Cahill has delivered his second movie called ‘I Origins‘, and I’m here to tell you that it’s as every bit of good that you are hoping for.

Film Review: ‘Deliver Us From Evil’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 2nd, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

international-trailer-for-eric-banas-deliver-us-from-evil

We’re in the middle of the big summer movie blockbuster season and Screen Gems has released a new horror film for the July 4th weekend, hoping that the big horror crowds that usually show up at the start of the year or around Halloween will take a break from the BBQ’s and hit up this demonic possession film ‘Deliver Us From Evil‘. It’s got a good premise and the trailers have been quite promising. Even the main story line about a NY detective investigating some really creepy stuff has its merits. But although ‘Deliver Us From Evil‘ has some creepy moments and a surprisingly good exorcism scene, its bad dialogue, story telling, and acting make this possession movie less than stellar and not the horror movie you were hoping for.

Film Review: ‘Dom Hemingway’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 17th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

dom-hemingway-jude-law-richard-e-grant

It’s very rare when I know two minutes into a film that it is going to be simply amazing. Well, ‘Dom Hemingway‘ is one of those rare moments. As I sat in the theater not knowing really anything about the film other than that Jude Law was in it and that director Richard Shepard (‘The Matador‘, ‘Girls‘) made the film, I turned to my friend ReelVixen two minutes in, and whispered, ‘This movie is fucking AWESOME!” And through the next 93 minutes, that statement rang true for every second of film. I can easily say that ‘Dom Hemingway‘ is one of my favorite films of the year and I can easily see myself watching this hilarious and fun gangster movie once a week for the rest of my life.

Film Review: ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 13th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

grandbudapesthotel-2

There are so many filmmakers out there that have given us amazing and iconic movies. From  Steven Spielberg to Stanley Kubrick and from John Hughes to Danny Boyle, we have laughed, cried, and felt every perk on the emotion scale while watching movies through the years. However, some of our favorite filmmakers have lost their creative eye and ability to make quality films, while their movies earlier in their career won Oscars and pushed these directors to super stardom, but later in their career, their films have us questioning their talent while their films are met with very negative reviews across the board. It’s truly a sad day when this happens, and unfortunately it happens more often then I’d like to admit.

Jana B. here,

Rob Zombie

Rob Zombie and Bret Easton Ellis are teaming up with Alcon Television to develop a project for Fox that takes us back to the morbid and attention grabbing incidents surrounding the Manson Family and the murder spree that ensued in August of 1969. Some of us may not have been alive during that time, but if you pay any attention at all to current events you have probably seen the different appeals and hearings for release some of the members have gone through since then. I know the history inside and out but it’s just because I’m a little different than normal people. I am fascinated by serial killers and have read everything on the subject I can get my hands on. At one point, I wanted to be a Psychiatrist that specialized in serial killer tracking…just like Alex Cross from the James Patterson novels. I didn’t end up doing that, but I still read or watch everything on the subject. Some nights I sleep with a baseball bat under the bed , each night I’m grateful for the shotgun that is less than 5 feet from me.

The Saw franchise focuses on a human’s survival instinct and let’s not forget the torture porn aspect. The legacy of Jigsaw will no doubt be at play here. Film Review: ‘Carrie’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 18th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

maxresdefault

Carrie‘ was Stephen King’s first novel that was published to the masses, and it made him a writing sensation. Little did we knew back in the 70s that this mastermind would create some of the most horrific settings and characters known to man. Not to mention some of the best non-horror books around. In dealing with remakes, it’s difficult not to compare to the original, as we have the same story arc and characters. In this case with Kimberly Peirce’s take on King’s novel, nothing seems to be too different than the original other than that we are in present day with mobile phones and computers and a few very minor details. Julianne Moore and Chloe Grace Moretz turn in great performances and give this reboot a bit of flair, but the overall pace and execution of some of the key scenes felt vague and lazy. Being the Halloween season and this being a horror film, I expect decent returns for this weekend only.

Film Review: ‘You’re Next’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 23rd, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Youre-Next-Masks-e1363694243952-640x336

A few indie horror-filmmakers lend a hand to this bloody, silly, fun B-movie flick ‘You’re Next‘. Director Adam Wingard doesn’t shy away from chopping faces or slitting throats here, and has cast horror-mates Joe Swanberg (V/H/S) and Ti West (The House of the Devil) in this blood-soaked romp. While it’s chaotic and stupid, this film still has a high splatter level and is very entertaining to keep horror fans talking. This is the perfect over-the-top horror film to jump-start the Halloween season.

The Polyphonic Spree Does Christmas

by NapkinArt on Oct 23rd, 2012

It might not yet be Halloween, and there are still a few days left to carve up that jack-o-lantern for the front porch, but The Polyphonic Spree is ready to ring in the Christmas spirit with or without you, with their first full length holiday album, “Holidaydream: Songs of the Holidays, Vol. 1”.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I have to say this preceding review may be partially biased, as I spent a good many months leading up to the album’s release, working on the album art, layout, pressing of vinyl, etc., so needless to say, I’m quite thrilled to see (and hear) the album’s existence.

Bryan’s Review of ‘Hotel Transylvania’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 29th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

‘Hotel Transylvania’ is a huge spectacle on the eyes.  With giant colorful monsters, swooping camera pans at every scene, and a somewhat decent voice cast, you’d think ‘Hotel Transylvania’ would be the perfect movie for all ages this Halloween.  However, ‘Hotel Transylvania’  relies more on the visual aspect with keeping little kids entertained to the fullest every second, that the story and characters get left buried underground.  With the other animated monster and zombie films that are out right now, this one ranks low on the list.

That tagline is correct.  This is the ultimate Midnight movie for you and your friends to drink, eat, and watch some of the schlockiest of schlock over a weekend.  You will NOT be disappointed.  With four short films by well respected and twisted horror filmmakers, you will get everything you wanted in a B-Movie fest.  With titles of ‘Wadzilla’, ‘I Was A Teenage Werebear’, ‘The Diary of Anne Frankenstein’, and ‘Zom-B-Movie’, you can expect your mind, body, and soul to to scream with maniacal laughter of all that is ‘Chillerama’.

Another Year, Another Paranormal Activity Movie!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 4th, 2012

Hi Bryan Here….

This is turning out like a ‘Saw’ franchise or a Nightmare on Elm St. franchise.  I see why.  I get it.  These films are made for almost nothing and every one of them make tons and tons of money.  Just like the ‘Saw’ films.  Well now, Paranormal Activity 4 will open this year on October 19th.  The last two Paranormal Activity films opened up around the Halloween time.  Paranormal Activity 3 was made for 5 million dollars and is almost at the $200 million dollar mark.  So you can see, why they are pumping these out every 12 months.  Makes sense business wise.

The Bishop Charlotte Reporting….

Disclaimer: I hate being scared. With a passion.

Chiller channel has decided that showing pre-made horror is not enough. They’re bringing us Steve Nile’s Remains, their first original movie, on December 16th. I’m so glad my roommate hates being scared as much as I do, or I might have had to find somewhere else to be that night.

Bryan Reviews ‘The Others’!!! (A Blu-Ray Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 13th, 2011

Hi Bryan here….

I remember seeing this in the theatre and jumping out of my skin several times.  This film is so creepy and tense that I was on the edge of my seat through the entire film.  Those images of dead people n the pictures that people kept freaked me the fuck out.  Still does.  This is one of my favorite ghost story films of all time.  Nicole Kidman is brilliant in this and the kids are just as good.  Watch this to get in spirit for Halloween.  And if you watch this, you might just be afraid to walk down the dark hall at night.  This is an excellent blu-ray release.  Love having this in hi-def.

Fox Renews ‘The Simpsons’ For Two More New Seasons!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 7th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here…

Everyone’s favorite animated family has just been renewed for two more new seasons.  Of course I am talking about the lovable ‘Simpsons’.  Of course over the past few days, Fox and the cast of the ‘Simpsons’ have been negotiating their salaries.  Fox said earlier in the week that ‘The Simpsons’ might need to be cancelled because they could no longer afford the salaries of their cast.  Harry Shearer (voice of Ned Flanders, Reverend Lovejoy, Lenny, amongst tons of others) offered 70% of his salary to keep the show going.  But that didn’t need to happen.  Fox and the cast came to a gracious agreement and we get ‘The Simpsons’ for at least two more years.  Kudos to everyone involved and thank you.

A Celebration of Friday the 13th In Horror!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 13th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here….

This is the sister “holiday” of Halloween in my book.  It’s all thanks to that wonderful killer mute character and that string of films that makes us all happy to throw back a bloody mary and watch horror films at midnight with friends and watch out for that boogeyman early on in the summer.  One of the reasons I love Jason Voorhees and the Friday the 13th films so much is that Jason never says anything which I think makes him much more creepier.  That silence is truly killer.   So in honor of Friday the 13th which comes maybe once or twice a year I have compiled some cool “behind the scenes” photos of the Friday the 13th films with some fun clips and some cool Friday the 13th sales.  ENJOY!!

Hi Bryan Here….

Here’s a review of the Nic Cage film, Drive Angry.  A little late I know, but this film is in the $1 dollar theaters now, and there is something just nostalgic and fun about going to the $1 dollars theaters nowadays.  There are not a lot of those theaters around anymore.  I used to go all the time to them, but that was also when movie tickets cost less than $5 dollars and before stadium seating.  This review comes from another one of our newest contributors to the site, so let’s all give a very warm welcome to FedMex.

A-hoy hoy,

Writing today to tell y’all about a little movie i caught at the dollar theater in the burbs.  Drive Angry 3D.  Ok, so because it was a 3D movie, I had to pay a whopping $2.75 to watch it. That stated, I can say with confidence that it was worth my money, but I can’t completely say with confidence that it was worth my drive to the burbs.

Two “Mad Men” Prints to Heat Up Your Holidays

by NapkinArt on Dec 11th, 2010

Hey Everyone. Kimbrell here from Napkin Art Studios.

So, hands down my favorite television show of ALL TIME is AMC’s “Mad Men”, featuring my man crush John Hamm as the dapper ‘Don Draper’. Was I ever excited to know that my two favorite print and design studios, Print Mafia and Hero Design, got together and collaborated on two very awesome hand made prints for us “Mad Men” fans to geek-out over.

There is a rule in my family that no one is supposed to buy themselves anything (minus groceries and such) after Halloween until after Christmas, giving my family a chance to surprise everyone with goodies from their holiday wish list. Well, I must confess that I have been breaking that rule left and right this year. I Most certainly couldn’t pass up this owning this awesome artwork.

Marvel Comics Will Get the Tron Treatment…

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 20th, 2010

Since Disney bought Marvel all those months ago, it is only right that Marvel will get to use the Disney brand of Tron in their comics.

Just like last Halloween, a lot of Marvel titles had alternate variant covers featuring Zombies.  Such as the cover for an Amazing Spider-Man issue would have Spidey as a zombie on the front cover.  You can see what those look like and purchase them HERE.

Well in anticipation for the upcoming release of the Tron sequel, “Tron: Legacy” Marvel is using their new ownership to riddle their titles and covers with Tron-Esque artwork.  And they look BADASS.

Here is a list of what they will be:

• AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #651 TRON Variant, featuring Spider-Man

• AVENGERS #7 TRON Variant. featuring Spider-Woman

• AVENGERS ACADEMY #7 TRON Variant, featuring Quicksilver

• CAPTAIN AMERICA #612 TRON Variant, featuring Captain America

• INCREDIBLE HULKS #618 TRON Variant, featuring Ghost Rider

• INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #33 TRON Variant, featuring Iron Man

• NEW AVENGERS #7 TRON Variant, featuring Ms. Marvel

Blu-Ray/DVD Releases for the 3rd Week of October….

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 19th, 2010

Sorry, It’s a Little late today, but still on schedule.  There are some AWESOME releases this week.  Some that I have been waiting years for. Anyway – as usual – the pics and titles link over to AMAZON – where you can learn more about the film in question – and can purchase the item, which helps give a small donation to help keep this column going. Now – here we go…

Apocalypse Now: Full Disclosure Edition (Bluray)

During the Vietnam War, young U.S. Captain Willard is given the assignment to hunt down and kill one of his own: Colonel Kurtz who has apparently gone insane, murdered hundreds of innocent people, and constructed a strange kingdom for himself deep in the jungle. Willard and his crew embark on a surreal river journey to find Kurtz, meeting along the way a Lieutenant- Colonel who likes to watch surfing during live combat, and Playboy bunnies dropped in by helicopter to entertain rowdy troops.

This is one of the best films about war to date.  It has an all-star cast including: Robert Duvall, Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, Dennis Hopper, and Francis Ford Coppola as director.  It is loaded with extras.  I highly recommend this.

Supplements

  • Interviews
  • Featurettes
  • Deleted scenes
  • Lost scene
  • “Destruction of the Kurtz Compound” end credits with audio commentary by Francis Ford Coppola
  • “The Hollow Men,” video of Marlon Brando reading T.S. Eliot’s poem
  • The Synthesizer Soundtrack” article by music synthesizer inventor Bob Moog

Exclusive HD Content

  • Hearts of Darkness Documentary
  • Hearts of Darkness audio commentary with Eleanor and Francis Ford Coppola
  • 48-page collectible printed booklet with special note from Francis Ford Coppola, never-before-seen archives from the set, behind the scenes photos and more
  • John Milius Script Excerpt with Francis Ford Coppola Notes
  • Storyboard Gallery
  • Photo Gallery, including images from photographer Mary Ellen Mark
  • Marketing Archive

Assault Girls (Bluray)

Now I do not know much about this movie, but the synopsis makes me want to buy this and watch it.  Could be a hell of a lot of chix-ploitation fun.

Plot Synopsis: When a video-game company creates an immersive gaming environment where players wage war against gigantic sand-dwelling monsters, three gorgeous gals armed to the teeth (Meisa Kuroki, Hinako Saeki and Rinko Kikuchi) accept the challenge and jump into the virtual desert. But as they blaze their way into the game’s higher levels, they face ever-more ferocious foes. Yoshikazu Fujiki also stars in this sci-fi action flick from director Mamoru Oshii.

That just sounds AWESOME.  Will be checking this out.

Moulin Rouge (Bluray)

I remember seeing this in the theatre when it was first released and I was in AWE at the set design and all the cool songs that were re-done for this movie.  This movie was just so beautiful to watch and I am glad it has finally received the HD treatment.  So enter this fantastic world where nothing is forbidden and everything is possible and purchase this movie.

Supplements

  • Introduction by Baz Luhrmann
  • A Creative Adventure
  • Uncut and Unreleased Footage
  • Production Featurettes (The Stars, The Writers, The Dance, The Music, The Design, and The Cutting Room)
  • The Making of Moulin Rouge

Night of the Demons (2009 Remake)  (Bluray)

This is a remake of the 1980’s horror film about a group of college kids who summon a demon at a party and kills everyone.  This remake is basically the same thing.  A group of kids go to a Halloween party, only to have to face down a group of demons.  If you like Demon movies and tons of gore and boobies, then this is a must own.  I would also purchase the original movie as well.  Just in time for Halloween.

Supplements

  • Writer/director commentary
  • Cast and crew interviews
  • Behind-the-scenes footage

Predators (Bluray)

A mercenary (Adrien Brody) reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realize they’ve been brought together on an alien planet… as prey. With the notable exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers—mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members—human “predators” that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators.

I remember anticipating this film and that Robert Rodriguez was a major producer on this.  This a re-vamp of the original film which starred Arnold, but instead of a Predator coming to Earth, humans go to the Predator planet.  Worth a look and a must have for the fans of the franchise.  I still miss VENTURA in his role.

Supplements

  • Commentary by producer Robert Rodriguez and director Nimród Antal
  • Motion Comics: “Moments of Extraction” – Robert Rodriguez presents exclusive prequel vignettes voiced by the cast of Predators. Witness the secret adventures that turned our world’s most ruthless killers into the ultimate Predator prey (Isabelle, Mombasa, “Crucified”)
  • De-Cloaking the Invisible: Alien Terrain

Exclusive HD Content

  • Additional Motion Comics (Cuchillo, Hanzo, and Noland Intro (part 1)/Noland Ending (part 2))
  • Predators as Prey
  • The Chosen
  • Yuatja Transformed
  • Rite of Passage
  • Fox Movie Channel presents: Making a Scene
  • Nine deleted and extended scenes
  • BD-Live: Exclusive Predator Features
  • Live Lookup – Powered by IMDB
  • Bloodline
  • Intelligent Design: The Hunting Camp

Psycho: 50th Anniversary Edition (Bluray)

Alfred Hitchock’s masterpiece, “Psycho” finally gets the HD treatment.  This is hands down one of the scariest films of all time.  They built a ride after this film.  This film still scares me and Anthony Perkins is BRILLIANT.

Norman Bates, whose old dark house and adjoining motel are not the place to spend a quiet evening. No one knows that better than Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), the ill-fated traveler whose journey ends in the notorious “shower scene.” First a private detective, then Marion’s sister (Ver Miles) searches for her, the horror and the suspense mount to a terrifying climax where the mysterious killer is finally revealed.

This is a must own for any collection.

Supplements

  • Audio Commentary
  • Documentary
  • Featurettes
  • Storyboards
  • Posters and Lobby Cards
  • Theatrical Trailers
  • Hitchcock/Truffaut Interviews
  • Photo Gallery

Exclusive HD Content

The Rocky Horror Picture Show: 35th Anniversary Edition (Bluray)

One of the greatest cult films of all time gets the HD treatment.  I remember seeing this film when I was about 10 years old and i was forever warped.  Excellent music and young stars such as: Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, and Meatloaf make this film what it is…..AMAZING.  They still today all over the country show midnight screenings of this film with audience participation where you can throw stuff at the screen and see actors act out the movie live in front of the screen in synch with the film.  Love this film.

‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ is an “erotic nightmare beyond any measure.” Relive Richard O’Brien’s sinfully twisted salute to horror, sci-fi, B-movies and rock music – A “sensual daydream to treasure forever” – starring Tim Curry (in his classic gender-bending performance), Barry Bostwick, and Oscar®-winner Susan Sarandon. Do the “Time Warp” and sing “Hot Patootie” with Meatloaf again…and again…and again. Pull up a slab and let the madness begin!

Seven Samurai: Criterion Collection (Bluray)

One of the greatest films of all time by Akira Kurosawa is about a Japanese farming village, constantly besieged and pillaged by an army of bandits, recruits seven independent samurai to defend it.  This is phenomenal and am very happy to purchase this title AGAIN to get it on BLURAY.  A MUST OWN.

Back in July a friend and I made a psychological horror film about two female best friends who become entangled in lies, deceit, betrayal, murder, and WEREWOLVES.  We had a wonderful time making the movie and we are already planning on making more.

So to get you in the spirit of the Halloween Season come to the Inwood Theatre in Dallas Friday and Saturday at midnight and see our film.  The film will start promptly at midnight.  There is a full service bar at the Inwood Theatre as well as comfy couches and love seats in the theatre.

The movie is called “BEWARE” and will be followed by the great horror film, “Trick R’ Trreat” which you could read my review of that movie HERE.

Click HERE for more info on the theatre.

Thank you and hope to see you there.

A couple of decades before Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland made audiences scream and laugh at the sight of zombies eating your flesh and brains, Return of the Living Dead paid tribute to the horror frenzy of Romero Zombie films that came before.   This same year Romero would release his most gruesome film, “Day of the Dead”.  Early on in production, the producers and director wanted to make a film that was sort of a homage to the 1969 classic Night of the Living Dead.  It is a tribute to that old Drive -In Horror movie era.

Now the first time I saw this film was when I was about twelve years ago and my cousin had a copy on VHS.  We sat down and watched it, and my jaw dropped on how crazy this movie was.  We had to turn off the movie ever so often when his parents would come in the room so that they wouldn’t see us watching blood and guts and tits.  All necessary things to have in a horror movie by the way.

Merely chalking Return of the Living Dead as a horror comedy really doesn’t do this justice.  This really is the ultimate 80’s horror film from my youth.  It has some genuinely freaky moments, some over the top gore and a ghoulish sense of humor.  If you’re not laughing at a naked, frozen cadaver sprinting towards a screeching homeless guy or one of the characters discovering that movies lie about how to kill zombies, then surely you’ll chuckle at reanimated corpses chanting “brains” or roll your eyes when another character gives his short soliloquy about his look being a lifestyle.  I mean this movie has it all.  This a must own for anytime of the year.

The Picture Quality

Back in 2007, a big Collector’s edition of this movie was released and the director worked on remastering it.  This seems to be the same transfer on bluray which is a good thing.  It looks clear with the same feel as an 80’s movie.  It is presented in 1080p in 1.85:1.  Facial close-ups are great and the contrast is bright that gives the visibility of objects in the background some depth and clarity.  Some of the black levels are not consistent with the rest of the film but it is barely noticeable.  It is a great release but it would have been nice for a new HD transfer.

The Audio Quality

This release comes with a DTS-HS audio track which is the best out of all previous releases.  But since it was recorded in mono, do not expect somethingAMAZING.   It doesn’t pack a punch that would scare you out of your seat like newer recorded movies would do, but for mono quality, it does the trick.  It brings you back to that nostalgic 80’s era.

The Packaging

This is where my MAJOR gripe comes in.  The cover art for this release is NOT the awesome art that we are all used to.  Instead we get the decayed text in red with a one zombie jumping out at you towards the bottom of the cover.  What was wrong with the zombie punks in the graveyard?  That is an iconic image.  Why didn’t you keep that?  It is overall a very unattractive cover.  They should have kept it original.  The discs main menu is pretty cool though.  It zooms through the graveyard where their are full motion clips on all the tombstones with some instrumental music playing.

Extras

If you own previous editions, then all of those features were transfered to this release.  This is a good thing, because the extras are heavy plenty of them.

Disc One

  • Audio Commentaries — Two separate feature-length tracks are ported over from the earlier DVD releases. First up is director Dan O’Bannon and production designer William Stout. Immediately, things are off to a good start, as before introducing themselves O’Bannon is compelled to tell viewers that this film is absolutely based on true facts. Despite being a very scene-specific commentary, both men are talkative and crack jokes at one another as well as about the movie. O’Bannon, of course, spends more time explaining the origins of certain lines and working with the cast, while Stout examines the look and prop design, offering some great anecdotes behind the production. Overall, this is an enjoyable and informative commentary track that’s worth a listen. Our second audio track features Stout once more, and he’s joined by cast members Don Calfa, Linnea Quigley, Brian Peck, Beverly Randolph, and Allan Trautman. Although not as energetic as the previous selection, the group is quite chatty with nary a moment of silence. Everyone offers minor quips about the production and behind-the-scenes stories, from casting to wardrobe. They even throw in a few compliments to the crew and Stout’s work, and there’s also an interesting comment about Ed Gein’s death at around the same time as shooting. We also learn that Quigley’s dancing scene on the set was while Vanity 6’s “Nasty Girls” played in the background. The discussion offers a fun listen with several good tidbits spread throughout and one strange moment of weirdness.
  • “The Dead Have Risen” (SD, 21 min) — A short retrospective with cast members sharing their experiences working on the movie. Although it’s mostly a whole lot of praising, there is the occasional comment about the characters and preparation that makes it worth a look.
  • “The Decade of Darkness” (SD, 23 min) — Made up mostly of interviews with various filmmakers, including a few funny bits with Elvira, this piece is an awesome look back at the 1980s, a booming decade of some of the wildest and creative horror movies that has yet to be matched.
  • “Designing the Dead” (SD, 14 min) — Director Dan O’Bannon talks about how he came to work in the film industry and how the script for this movie landed on his lap. Along with William Stout providing a historical setting, O’Bannon also shares his reasons for changing the original concept into a comedy.
  • Trailers (SD) — Two theatrical previews are offered here: a green band version dubbed the “Bloody Version” and the red band called “Even Bloodier Version.”
  • Zombie Subtitle Stream — This is much like a separate subtitle track for when zombies scream. And all we see is the words “aaarrrgghh!!” every once in a while on the screen. It’s nothing wholly exciting.
  • In Their Own Words: The Zombies Speak — This is a pretty weak attempt at comedy, pretending like zombies are making random comments at the movie.

Disc Two

  • DVD — A standard definition copy of the film is also included in the package with the same assortment of special features.

Overall, I think this is a solid release, but I do not think it will be the last one.  I do like the fact that you get the DVD and Bluray with this purchase.  The audio is the best you will have so far with this release and the picture is solid.  This is truly a gem of a film and a must own for any horror fans.

The Blair Witch Project (Blu-ray)

This bluray was released  over a month ago exclusively at BEST BUY.  If you have not picked it up yet, then you can pick Blair Witch up anywhere tomorrow.  While this bluray disc is the best Blair Witch has ever looked, it is far from being a demo in your home.  Still tons of grain and just over all sloppy.  But I believe this was the intent of the filmmakers.  To make it look as real as possible.  The sound isn’t really that great on the disc.  Those set aside, if you liked seeing this movie all those years ago, then this is a must pick up to re-live that time and the special features are pretty good.

The Exorcist: Extended Director’s Cut (Blu-Ray)

Finally.  To start out the month of Halloween, we get the hig-def transfer of the scariest movie of all time, “The Exorcist”.  You get the spider-crawl scene, the extended ending and a few other scenes that were added in that were not in the original.  I saw this at the theater last week on the big screen, and it was fantastic.  Still scary as hell.  I wish they still made films like this still.  Where we grow with a character and see them transform into something TERRIBLE.    This is a 2-dsic set with a booklet with behind the scenes photos and essays about the making of the film.  An absolute must for any collection.

It is about time we get these two films from Tarantino and Rodriguez in one release.  And YES.  YES.  We will be getting all the fake trailers in this release of Grindhouse.    Now I am a big fan of actual Grindhouse films and Tarantino and Rodriguez did an excellent job in re-creating the atmosphere and feel of this type of film.  I cannot wait to sit down with some friends at midnight with tons of beer and food and watch these two films in a row.

Hard Candy (Blu-Ray)

This was another film that was released a while ago as a Best Buy exclusive.  This film made me sweat.  I was on the edge of my seat the entire film.  One of the most tense films I have ever seen.  If you have not seen this yet, I really do not want to give anything away, but seriously buy this film if you love uber tense movies.  What a thrill ride.  it stars Ellen Page from “Juno”.

Hoping to prepare for their college exams in peace and quiet, they decide to spend a weekend in the country at Alexia’s parents’ secluded farmhouse. But in the dead of night, a stranger knocks on the front door. And with the first swing of his knife, the girls’ idyllic weekend turns into an endless night of horror.

The Human Centipede (Blu-Ray)

I saw this film a few months ago.  It really did not get a wide release in theaters.  IFC put it on demand for a couple of weeks and I got a chance to watch it.  WOW.  It is a brutal torture film in which a mad scientist/doctor makes a “Human Centipede”, by kidnapping innocent people and sewing his victims ass to mouth so they have one digestive track.  This is a film to watch with others and watch their reaction.  Much much joy.  This is a must own for all you cinephiles out there.  “During a stopover in Germany in the middle of a carefree roadtrip through Europe, two American girls find themselves alone at night when their car breaks down in the woods. Searching for help at a nearby villa, they are wooed into the clutches of a deranged retired surgeon who explains his mad scientific vision to his captives’ utter horror. They are to be the subjects of his sick lifetime fantasy: to be the first to connect people, one to the next, via their gastric system, and in doing so bring to life ‘the human centipede.”

The Last of the Mohicans (Blu-Ray)

An epic adventure and passionate romance unfold against the panorama of a frontier wilderness ravaged by war. Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis (Best Actor in 1989 for My Left Foot) stars as Hawkeye, rugged frontiersman and adopted son of the Mohicans, and Madeleine Stowe is Cora Munro, aristocratic daughter of a proud British Colonel. Their love, tested by fate, blazes amidst a brutal conflict between the British, the French and Native American allies that engulfs the majestic mountains and cathedral-like forests of Colonial America.  What a gem of a film in high definition.

The Maltese Falcon (Blu-ray)

A beloved Bogart classic gets the high-def treatment.  A gallery of high-living lowlifes will stop at nothing to get their sweaty hands on a jewel-encrusted falcon. Detective Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) wants to find out why – and who’ll take the fall for his partner’s murder. An all-star cast (including Sydney Greenstreet, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre and Elisha Cook Jr.) joins Bogart in this crackling mystery masterwork written for the screen (from Dashiell Hammett’s novel) and directed by John Huston. This 1941 Academy Awards® Nominee* catapulted Bogart to stardom and launched Huston’s directorial career – all with a bird and a bang.

A Nightmare on Elm St. 2010 (Blu-ray)

This remake of the beloved 1980’s classic by Wes Craven gets the remake over haul and only somewhat disappoints.  You get everything you want out of the film.  Jackie Earl Haley plays Freddy and he does a good job at it and there are even some straight forward shot for shot remake scenes from the original.  But what is missing or shall I say what is NOT missing.  Listen, I do NOT want an “in my face” reason why Freddy is Freddy.  I do NOT want to know when these characters are in a dream or not until creepy shit starts happening.  And I want Freddy to be the same funny one liner Freddy, which I get but only in the end.  Some stuff was done right and some stuff was not.  Overall I still liked it, and will see another sequel if one gets made, but the original still is the best.

A wonderful set of our favorite comic strip “The Peanuts: featuring Charlie Brown.  In this set you will get “A Charlie Brown Christmas”, “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”, and “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving”.   Can’t wait to watch these in the blu-ray format.

Supplements

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead (Blu-Ray)

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead’ is the debut feature film of Director Jordan Galland, who also penned the original screenplay, which finds the characters from Hamlet, a tip of the cap to Tom Stoppard, and a two thousand year conspiracy involving vampires and the Holy Grail.   This just sounds BADASS!  Must Get.

Secretary (Blu-Ray)

What a modern classic cult film this was.  I love the fetish world and this films explores quite a bit of that.  In an office setting no less.  A true Love Story at heart.  James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal star in the dark comedy Secretary. Praised as “daring, funny and quirkily erotic!” (Glenn Kenny, Premiere) and “sexy and highly stylized” (Gear magazine), Secretary is the story of Lee Holloway (Gyllenhaal), a young woman with a few strikes against her after a brief stay in a mental hospital, who accepts a secretarial position working at the law office of E. Edward Grey (Spader). The work seems normal at first, but somewhere between the typing, filing and coffee-making, Lee and her new boss cross the line of their professional relationship and enter into a Human Resources nightmare!

Splice (Blu-Ray)

I really liked this film.  It was a very different take into the realm of sci-fi and horror.  It is a bit awkward to watch, but I loved where this move took me.  I have not seen it before done.  Very good and highly recommended.  Superstar genetic engineers Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley) specialize in splicing DNA from different animals to create incredible new hybrids. Now they want to use human DNA in a hybrid that could revolutionize science and medicine. But when the pharmaceutical company that funds their research forbids it, Clive and Elsa secretly take their boldest experimentation underground—risking their careers by pushing the boundaries of science to serve their own curiosity and ambition. The result is Dren, an amazing, strangely beautiful creature of uncommon intelligence and an array of unexpected physical developments. At first, Dren exceeds their wildest dreams. But as she grows and learns at an accelerated rate, her existence threatens to become their worst nightmare.

Troll 2: Nilbog Edition (Blu-Ray)

Labeled as the Best Worst Film Ever.  Troll 2 does not have trolls in the entire film nor is it a sequel.  If that does not capture you to want to watch this then I do not know what will.  Disguised as friendly country folk, a pugnacious posse of people-eating trolls lures visitors to their town. But a family of four is about to discover this place is a real tourist trap…and they’re the prey! Now, the no-good gnomes must be destroyed before the family gets flambéed…and the world becomes a buffet in this feeding frenzy of fear!  A ridiculous good time.

That is it for this week.  Stay tuned for next week.

Rob Zombie To Direct “Lords of Salem”

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 23rd, 2010

Rock God and Film Director Rob Zombie has announced his next film he will direct which will be “Lords of Salem”.  It is about what unfolds when an group of witches plague modern-day Salem.

Zombie says he will write the script and start shooting next year.

Also, Zombie was attracted to the setup by an offer of autonomy — he’s given “total control” over script, casting and final cut. That’s a far cry from working with the Weinsteins and Dimension.

The film will be a thriller, “set in contemporary Salem, where the inhabitants receive a demonic visit from a 300-year old coven of witches.”

Zombie says his best filmmaking experience to date has been with LionsGate on The Devil’s Rejects, and I’d mark the coincidence that Rejects is his best film. He says the battles on the two Halloween movies were draining. (”By the time I got [my way], I didn’t care anymore.”)

Speaking to Deadline, Zombie also namedrops The Shining as an example of a slow-burn film that might not get made by a studio now, which suggests that he might go for a longer, more deliberately paced film while making The Lords of Salem.

Zombie also went on to say, “I wanted to break away from anything related to preexisting material…The remake train is getting pretty tired now and when I made Halloween, everybody complained, either that it was too much like the original or too different. I like that people either love or hate what I do because it’s better than being in the middle, which means forgettable. But when you do an original premise, they take it on face value and after three years of not being able to win on Halloween, I just couldn’t go through that again.”

If only he had total control over House of 1000 Corpses.  I like Rob as a filmmaker, and I can’t wait to see his return to original movies.

Red Band Night of the Demons Remake Trailer is Online

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 19th, 2010

Another horror remake is coming to us this Halloween.  This time it is “Night of the Demons”.  You might have seen the original one from 1988.  Click HERE to refresh your memory.

This time around it stars Edward Furlong (Where the hell has he been?), Shannon Elizabeth (American Pie), and Monica Keena (Freddy VS. Jason).  The story looks the exact same from the original.  Teens/college students having a party at a big house and evil demons start to possess the living into blood thirsty evil demons and a extreme bloodbath ensues.

Now I am a huge sucker for popcorn horror films.  They just make me spend my money like no other.  From seeing this NSFW Red Band Trailer, it makes me thing that this film just might be the crazy cult horror event of the year.  Looks quite fun.

What do you think?

Clint Eastwood is making a Horror/Thriller Movie

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 12th, 2010

Badass clint Eastwood is currently hard at work on his new movie called “Hereafter”. It is currently slated to come out in October near Halloween. I am very curious to see how Clint takes on the supernatural thriller genre.

Matt Damon, Jay Mohr, and Bryce Dallas Howard are starring in the film.

The film synopsis according to Warner Bros. is: “Hereafter” tells the story of three people who are haunted by mortality in different ways. Matt Damon stars as George, a blue–collar American who has a special connection to the afterlife. On the other side of the world, Marie (Cécile de France), a French journalist, has a near–death experience that shakes her reality. And when Marcus (Frankie/George McLaren), a London schoolboy, loses the person closest to him, he desperately needs answers. Each on a path in search of the truth, their lives will intersect, forever changed by what they believe might—or must—exist in the hereafter.”

Sounds great doesn’t it.  Click HERE to see the trailer in glorious quicktime.

Zombieland 2 Has Been Written

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 7th, 2010

Since the opening of Zombieland it was clear that a sequel was going to be in the works.  The director Ruben Fleischer will be returning to direct and Rhett Reese and Paul Wenick were put to work to write the sequel.

Well they knocked out a first draft and it seems that the original cast will be back for another tale of Zombieland.  I just do not know yet on how much they will be in the film or if the film will follow another set of survivors.  Ruben also told the press that he might want to explore Zombieland further in the future and also show a few scenes before the outbreak hit.

Ruben is currently filming “30 Minutes or Less” and has got another deal to make a Buddy Action Cop movie for Dreamworks so Zombieland might be a few years away.  But I can breathe easy knowing that Zombieland 2 will happen.

Ruben said this to MTV: “What’s fun about the sequel is we have freedom and flexibility to show different periods. We might have scenes before the zombies, or we might have some months after, or potentially stuff further down the road. Through the voice-over and the way the movie is structured, we can really explore all different sides of it.  When it comes to 3-D, I feel pretty strongly that you should shoot it in camera,” he said. “I feel like it just looks so much better. If you’re going to make a 3-D movie, go ahead and make a 3-D movie. I would definitely, if we do  “Zombieland 2″, make it in 3-D and want to shoot it in 3-D.”

I wonder if in Zombieland 2 we will get another kick-ass cameo.  It is hard to beat Bill Murray.  It would be great if they ran into Bruce Campbell.

Bryan Trick ‘r Treats Early (Trick ‘r Treat Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 2nd, 2010

So I finally got to take a look at the horror movie “Trick ‘r Treat” and if you know me, then you know I am a cinephile.  Meaning I will see pretty much everything and also that I have a large affection for everything HORROR.  Over the last several years, it has been difficult for me to thoroughly enjoy a great horror film.  There are only a few exceptions.  I do not know if it is my childhood love for Halloween or my extreme passion for everything Horror, but this movie “Trick ‘r Treat” is the best Horror film to come out in years.  Now that is something to take notice of coming from me.

I really didn’t know anything going into this film other than it was a horror film about Halloween and that it followed several story lines and all connected at some point during the movie.  Kinda like “Pulp Fiction”.  I was hoping for genuine scares, comedic moments, blood, excellent death scenes, and even more blood.  I can safely say, that I received all of that plus more.

Trick ‘r Treat is basically a throwback to old Halloween Horror films and the traditions and holiday rules we all have grown to know.  It covers it all in this movie.  It connects several stories through out the movie through a very creepy little villain who is not named, but wears a scarecrow mask.  This little villain is so frightening that he will instantly haunt you for years to come.

We follow a group of spunky college girls, a psychotic principal, a horrific school bus  accident, a mean spirited child prank, a newly wed couple, and an old man’s strange intruder all with one directive.  Do not break the rules of Halloween.

This has quite a spectacular cast.  Brian Cox and Anna Paquin lend their talents to this film as well as several others you will recognize here and there.  The actors really helped this movie take it to the next level.

I cannot believe this film was not given its due date.  Only released straight to home video, this movie should have had a better marketing team and gotten into every theatre at the Halloween time.

I really have nothing to complain about in this movie.  It was everything I wanted in a horror movie.  This film will be a staple of horror film marathons and played round the clock come Halloween time.

See this movie as soon as you can and let me know what you thought of it.  I loved talking about his movie after I watched it.  Every single detail about it.  It was a hell of a lot of fun.
