Hi, Bryan Here…

url

In a fun marketing campaign for the upcoming thriller ‘Olympus Has Fallen‘, the studio is looking for “skilled professionals” to escort and check out the scene at the red carpet to make sure everything is ‘safe’ for the characters and actors.  They are billing it as they are looking for a task force of special agents to attend the world premiere of the film.  All you have to do is full out a bit of information, and hope that you are picked to attend.  You could possible meet Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, or Morgan Freeman.

Hi, Bryan Here….

olympus_has_fallen

Here is the new 1st trailer for ‘Olympus Has Fallen‘, which looks pretty intense. We have talked about this movie before and marks one of several films dealing with an elite team taking down terrorists at the White House.  Antoine Fuqua will  be directing the film, which he is known for making ‘Training Day‘. The trailer itself looks good and stars Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Dylan McDermott, Ashley Judd, Melissa Leo,  and Rick Yune.  Hell of a cast if you ask me.

Film Review: ‘Skyfall’

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 8th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

It’s hard to believe that the James Bond series is 50 years old now.  Don’t let the age fool you, because with the latest installment of Bond, ‘Skyfall’ might just be the best one yet.  Action-packed with giant set pieces, bits of humor, one of the best villains in Bond history, and one hell of an homage to the original Bond should make ‘Skyfall’ and instant classic and fan favorite of the 007 franchise.

Check Out the ‘Skyfall’ Trailer!!! 007 is Back!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 31st, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Some interesting and fun marketing campaign for the new James Bond film lately.  If you watched the Olympics Opening Ceremony, you would have seen Daniel Craig as 007 escort the Queen of England to the Olympic stadium as they jumped out of a helicopter and parachuted into the stadium.  It was hilarious.  And if you have seen ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ in IMAX, you would have been treated to a few minutes of ‘Skyfall’.  Well, here is the new international trailer which is all sorts of cool.  Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes, Javier Bardem, Ben Whishaw, Helen McCrory and Judi Dench star in the Sam Mendes-directed spy thriller which comes out in theaters on November 9 (my birthday).

Hi Bryan Here…

So I am sure you have all seen the hit documentary “King of Kong” about achieving the high score of Donkey Kong and the battle of good vs. evil.  I am course speaking about Billy Mitchell and Steve Wiebe.  To quote my earlier article about this matter, …..”since the documentary where Wiebe beat Mitchell(the champ for highest donkey kong score) , and then Mitchell beating Wiebe for the title back, the newcomer, Hank Chien (a plastic surgeon) defeated Mitchell for the title only to have Mitchell take the title back from Chien.  But then Wiebe stole the title from Chien this past September only to be knocked back down to 2nd place by Chien this past January.  WHHHHEEEEWWWW!!!  This new documentary is about Hank Chien.”  DOCTOR KONG: CUTTING UP THE COMPETITION!!!

I’m on my way to New Vegas. Fallout Review

by Cowdefender on Oct 25th, 2010

CowDefender Here…

I was an addict of Fallout 3. I loved roaming a huge blasted landscape while listening to old time music. I loved choosing between being good, warm and kind and dastardly evil. At times getting to make decisions where either way your hands are dirty. I was excited by the notion of taking that game engine and those game elements and throwing it from DC to the vicinity of Sin City.

Bryan Falls For Minnie and Moskowitz for a Drink (Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 4th, 2010

John Cassavetes was an excellent film director.  He had a knack for making films that had a realistic style to them.  His films seemed that there was no script, but all improvised to make it that much more tangible.  By doing this his films are forever remembered and you think about them often as if they have imprinted the pictures on your celluloid brain like that of film.

The film, “Minnie and Moskowtiz” was one of John’s later films.  It debuted in 1971 and starred Gena Rowlands (who was Cassavetes’ wife), and Seymour Cassel (Rushmore/Royal Tennenbaums) who play the film’s lead roles.  It is a true LOVE story.

The basic plot synopsis of this wonderful forgotten film is that after a break-up, Minnie Moore, a successful museum curator, becomes disillusioned with dating, love, and men.  So much so that she does not know how to act socially anymore or feel any love for people.  She just goes to work and then home living a life void of LOVE.  That is until she has a random chance encounter with Seymour Moskowitz, a jewish parking lot attendant who after their brief encounter falls head over heels for Minnie.  He tries desperately to get her to love him back.

In the first scene, we see Moskowitz sitting down at a diner by himself eating.  In the booth adjacent to him is a burly scary fellow who happens to be crazy and very drunk who begins to harass Moskowitz by telling him ridiculous stories and even wanting to eat some of Seymour’s food.  Throughout this entire scene, Moskowitz barely speaks and obliges to the lonely man’s request at every turn.  Seymour even offers him money at one point o get him something to eat.   This shows what a kind soul Seymour has and what patience he has.  Even with a complete crazy stranger.

There are a few funny scenes.  One in particular is where Minnie and Seymour’s mothers meet each other for dinner for the first time.  Seymour’s mother is a typical Jewish mother from NY.  Very funny.

I really just fell in love with these two characters on how they just loved each other for who they were, rather not what they did for each other.

Thank you Claire for showing me this film.

If you can find this film, please see it.  I do not think it is available for purchase anywhere unless you want to spend over $50.00.  It is currently on netflix streaming.  See it.

Please welcome our newest writer to the Boomstick Staff, Jonathon Kimbrell.  Not only is Jon a writer, but he is also an amazing artist with his work shown around the world.  He is the next Warhol.  See his work HERE. His favorite films are that of the blaxploitation kind and his musical tastes fall in the Sheryl Crowish, Pre-LA Law, Post Partridge Family, Susan Day kinda thing.  He went to the Tom Petty show last night in Dallas and here is what he had to say about it.

“Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Bring Their ‘Mojo’ to Dallas”

The first thing you may be asking yourself as you begin to read this review is “What in the heck does Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers have to do with comics?” The answer is absolutely nothing, but if you are a real comics fan, chances are you love music and entertainment just the same. However, I’m sure that little ol’ band from Los Angeles read a few comics in their day. So there…

After 30+ years of being in the music business it is still very apparent that Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers still have ‘Mojo’, as it’s well proven on their latest LP of the same name.

Tom Petty and the boys made their rescheduled stop in Dallas last night to a nearly packed house at the Superpages.com pavilion, and brought with them lovely weather, their classic tunes, and believe it or not, a full moon for their fans. Originally, this show was slated for May 2010 with supporting act, Joe Cocker, but was rescheduled due to previous scheduling conflicts. Since Joe Cocker couldn’t make the rescheduled tour stop, TP enlisted the services of Texas’ favorite sons, ZZ Top, to kick off a wonderful night of live music. Growing up as a child of the 1980s and the MTV generation, hearing ZZ Top perform radio gems like “Sharp Dressed Man”, “Tush”, and ” Legs”, I had the pleasure of reliving those moments of watching MTV 24/7, in hopes of catching another video featuring hot chicks in tight spandex. (Btw, what the hell ever happened to MTV?) In addition to ZZ Top classics and a few nuggets for the hard-core fans, the crowd was also treated to a special rendition of Jimi Hendrix’s cover of “Hey Joe”, celebrating the life Hendrix left 40 years ago (September 18th). I could see why, after hearing that performance, why Hendrix considered Billy Gibbons his favorite guitarist of all time.

Of course, The Heartbreakers would not be outdone. It’s always a great guessing game as to what song The Heartbreakers will open up with. Typically, the last few times I’ve seen them live it’s been a track off “Wildflowers”, but last night’s opener was a surprise with “Listen To Her Heart” in all of its Rickenbacker-toned glory. The show continued with Heartbreaker hits, like “Won’t Back Down”, “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”, “Refugee” and an all-time favorite of mine, “Learning To Fly” featuring Tom on a black acoustic that could have come from Johnny Cash’s personal collection. Fast forward to the real goods I was anxious to hear: live cuts from “Mojo”. They tore through a blistering mini set of “Jefferson Jericho Blues” (with Scott Thurston on harmonica that would make blues harmonica legend Little Walter sweat in excitement), “Running Man’s Bible” and album closer “Good Enough”, that showcased the absolute best guitar playing I’ve ever heard from lead guitarist (and credited co-captain of the band) Mike Campbell in the many years I’ve been listening to The Heartbreakers. That live performance alone could have been the show closer, but no Heartbreakers gig would be complete without encore performances of “Running Down A Dream” and “American Girl”, which was much more stripped down instrumentally that what you are used to hearing on the radio.

After two hours of performing just a sliver of their 30 some odd years worth of sing-a-long worthy hits, a show that was shorter than their usual live performances, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers gave Dallas another memorable evening of live grooves, proving once more they are America’s Greatest Rock n’ Roll Band, and that their ‘mojo’ is here to stay.

‘JoJo Rabbit’ – Film Review! (Fantastic Fest)

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 2nd, 2019

I expected this movie about a young boy named Jojo growing up during the fall of Nazi Germany to be Taika Waititi’s take on a classic Mel Brooks set up. It turns out Taika has not seen ‘The Producers‘ or any of the other Hilter satires that commonly spring to mind when you hear about the initial concept of this film. While often hilarious, ‘Jojo Rabbit‘ takes a different, more earnest direction.

Edward Zwick Interview on ‘Trial by Fire’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 15th, 2019

I had the distinct pleasure to talk with filmmaker Edward Zwick about his new motion picture ‘Trial by Fire‘, amongst other aspects of his career. ‘Trial by Fire‘ is Zwick’s newest film about the true crime story about the Texas State Prisoner Execution of Cameron Todd Willingham some years ago. The film stars Jack O’Connell and Laura Dern and follows the story of a father who escaped a home fire alive, but his two young kids were burned alive inside.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Ninja III: The Domination’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 14th, 2018

THE FILM

Back in 1984, the world was given a movie by the name of ‘Ninja III: The Domination‘, which was the third film in a trilogy. If you were to go back and watch all three Ninja films, you’d be hard pressed to find a similar tone or continuity throughout each of them, minus a small ninja aspect. After the first two ‘Ninja‘ films, it was time to throw everything in the bag, including the kitchen sink, which eventually became ‘Ninja III: The Domination‘. The movie plays out like Hunter S. Thompson wrote it over a drug-induced bender in Vegas, but only had a few dollars to make the film that is a mix between ‘Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo‘, a horror film, and the wackiest Kung-Fu movie this side of the Mississippi. In fact, the star and director of ‘Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo‘ also star and direct ‘Ninja III‘, which makes perfect sense when you think about it. This is a film that I imagine had fantastic intentions and thought it was going to be the biggest blockbuster ever made, but the results gave us something much more. It gave us a movie that was so beyond weird and insane, that cult audiences around the world fell in love with it and keep it alive still to this day.

‘Last Flag Flying’ waves over Blu-ray!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 14th, 2017

Last Flag Flying‘ is coming to Blu-ray on January 30th and will be available digitally on January 16th. The film is directed by Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused, Everybody Wants Some, Boyhood) and stars Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne, and is based on Darryl Ponicsan’s book of the same name. The movie focuses on three older men who all served in Vietnam together. Fast forward many years later, they are all reunited when one of their son’s has died in the Iraq war and they road trip to bury the fallen. It’s a different kind of movie for sure in Linklater’s list of movies, but he proves that he can tackle any subject, even if it isn’t as silly or fun as the above mentioned films of his. There will be audio commentaries, behind the scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, and more included on this Blu-ray. Below is more information on the release.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Atomic Blonde’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 9th, 2017

THE FILM

This film portion is written by Dan Moran.

Atomic Blonde isn’t a perfect movie. It has an overly complex plot and is about 20 minutes longer than it needs to be, but all of that is overcome by some of the best action sequences in recent memory with an absolutely badass performance by Charlize Theron.

Film Review: ‘The Promise’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 21st, 2017

Audrey E., here….

If done right, who doesn’t appreciate a muscular war film decorated with a cherry of passion on top? Based on true events, ‘The Promise,’ directed by Academy Award winning filmmaker Terry George (Hotel Rwanda), had the capacity to convey a burning love story intertwined with the real Armenian genocide during World War I. However, inspired thematic violence and even Christian Bale can’t guarantee your film’s success.
