Film Review: ‘Ex Machina’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 17th, 2015

Fernando M., Here…

ex-machina-movie

It’s very rare that we get to say that a directorial debut is nothing short of a rousing success. Ex Machina is one of the finest films I have seen in YEARS!  Written and directed by veteran screenwriter Alex Garland, the brilliant writing mind behind 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and the Dredd reboot; he has outdone himself in every way by taking the director’s chair on his new film.

Film Review: ‘A Most Violent Year’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 21st, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

amvy_day6-219.CR2

By the title alone, you’d think this was in fact ‘A Most Violent Year‘ or a very violent movie. However, that is not exactly the case here. In fact, it’s far from it. J.C. Chandor’s screenplay and film is a very slow burn that tells a story of the seedy underbelly of competing heating oil suppliers in 1981 New York City. The reason for the film’s title is that 1981 was considered New York City’s most violent year on record.

Fernando’s Film Review: ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 20th, 2013

Fernando M., Here…

inside_llewyn_davis

The Coen brothers return to give their homage to starving musicians and the art of folk songs.  Seen through the eyes of folk musician Llewyn Davis, the film captures a week long span, and perhaps the most eventful weeklong span, of one man’s continued attempt to make it. Film Review: ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 17th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

inside-llewyn-davis-oscar-isaac

The Coen Bros. have knocked it out of the park yet again with their latest film ‘Inside Llewyn Davis‘. Although, I don’t think this will have the big box office draw that ‘O Brother Where Art Thou?‘ or ‘No Country For Old Men‘ had, but I expect people to be talking about this film for months to come and singing the impressive soundtrack, which was produced by T Bone Burnett. In the scale of things, this is a very small film set in the New York folk music scene in the early 60s. In true Coen Bros. fashion, the mood is darkly funny, and follows a man, who tries to find himself later in life through his music. I can’t recommend this film enough.

And The Golden Globe Nominees Are….

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 12th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

1355416686-golden_globe_awards

Here are the nominees for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards. Wow, there were a lot of snubs here. And how did ‘Rush‘ make the list for Best Picture? No way! And what about ‘The Way Way Back‘, ‘Mud‘, or ‘Short Term 12‘ not being nominated? For shame. Let me know what you think of this nominee list?

Suzanne Reviews ‘Won’t Back Down’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 28th, 2012

Suzanne Here….

Educational reform is a difficult enough subject for policymakers to tackle. Nothing is black and white, no one is completely to blame or completely self-interested, and there are a tremendous number of problems and an infinite number of solutions. So in approaching a movie about the plight of public education today, it would be nice to see the subject treated with the nuance appropriate to actually reform the system. Unfortunately, Won’t Back Down misses this nuance and focuses on creating a good vs. evil environment with two sides that don’t work together to find a solution. Fine, it’s a movie – except this is a subject that requires some thought, and so should this movie.

Check Out the Trailer for ‘The Bourne Legacy’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 9th, 2012

Hi Bryan Here…

This trailer looks good.  Sorry no Matt Damon, but Jeremy Renner looks like he has taken the Bourne role nicely.  “The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.”  Enjoy the trailer.
