Film Review: ‘Hail, Caesar!”

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 3rd, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

hail-caesar-josh-brolin

It’s always a good time when the Coen Bros. have a new movie in theaters. Film after film, the Coen Bros. have not only told bizarre, funny, violent, musical stories, but have conjured up some of the best characters in movie history. Their uncanny talent for telling stories on film is unrivaled with each movie they make. Their latest endeavor tackles the early years of Hollywood, specifically the year 1951, in a film called ‘Hail, Caesar!‘ that has an A-List cast of Coen regulars and newcomers. Even though the posters and trailers show this A-List cast throughout, the film follows one man, and that is Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin), based on the real life Mannix who was a big time producer and  “fixer” at MGM.

And the 2016 Golden Globe Nominees Are….

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 10th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

53fe9c57-1190-4d61-b197-fcda11fc89af

The awards show is January 10 on NBC hosted by Ricky Gervais. First off, let’s look at something AWESOME here. ‘MAD MAX: FURY ROAD‘ is nominated for BEST PICTURE. It needs to win. It should win. And if does win, we all go streaking. That being said…I can’t believe that ‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl‘ was not nominated for anything. Come on. It’s one of the BEST films of the year. It’s also interesting to see no love for the final season of ‘Mad Men’ her either. Oh well.

Here is the list of nominees:

Hey guys, Jana here,

Ronda Rousey isn’t content with only kicking ass on the mat as one of the most enigmatic UFC fighters ever to take center stage, she’s been branching out into film beginning with a small cameo appearance in ‘The Expendables 3‘ and ‘Furious 7‘. Rowdy Ronda is taking over the lead in one of the most anticipated  re-makes MGM has in their stable right now, ‘Road House‘.

Hey guys, Jana here,

maxresdefault

To Live and Die in L.A.’ from 1985 has a certain cult following that no doubt popped a pup tent when they heard the news that writer and director William Friedkin has worked a deal to bring the film to the small screen. In what became a competitive situation, WGN America landed the drama adaptation with the Oscar winning director.

‘Tomb Raider’ Coming Back To The Big Screen!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Feb 25th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

lara-crof-tomb-raider

If you don’t remember ‘Lara Croft: Tombraider‘ from 2001 with Angelina Jolie, then you’ve been living in one hell of a bubble. This was one of the first video-game to big screen adaptations that gave fan-boys the world over chubbers when Jolie poured herself into her costume and ran around the set living out every fantasy the game inspired.

Bryan’s Best and Worst of 2014 List!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 22nd, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Wright_39_s_Top_10_Films_of_2014

I can’t believe how fast this year has gone by. 2014 was an interesting year to say the least, most of which was great. Movie-wise, I think 2014 had some excellent films filling its theaters, but of course it had some real stinkers too. Below is my list of the Best and Worst films of 2014 with some added categories down at the bottom. I believe this year I watched over 145 new films, theatrically speaking and it was very difficult to narrow them down from 25. After some chocolate snacks covered in marshmallow cream, I finally had a TOP 10. But when you talk about the Best movies, you have to mention the worst too. My list tends to be a tad bit different from others, but hey, I’m twisted. I highly encourage you to seek out these movies – good or bad and enjoy the rest of your year.

Hey guys, Jana here,

3.4.11KevinSmithByLuigiNovi1

Kevin Smith is a film maker that turned the business of making movies on it’s head. He hit the jackpot with 1994’s ‘Clerks‘. The script had “personal experience” written all over it and it made a very unexpected splash. Since then Smith has laid some pretty decent comedy on film, excluding ‘Jersey Girl‘.  I adore most of his films and it all started with ‘Clerks‘. Smith kept the indie-style film making with him the whole way. Nothing could prove that more than his latest film, ‘Tusk‘.

Interview with Kevin Smith at Fantastic Fest 2014!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 26th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

kevin-smith-ears

We had the distinct honor to talk with the legendary director Kevin Smith in Austin, Tx at Fantastic Fest 2014. Smith is one of the pioneers of the indie film genre with cult hits such as ‘Clerks‘, ‘Mallrats‘, ‘Chasing Amy‘, ‘Dogma‘, ‘Jersey Girl‘, and ‘Red State‘. His new film, ‘Tusk‘ is quite the film. I’ve never seen anything like it. We discuss his ‘Red State‘ premiere in Kansas City, ‘Tusk‘, and his favorite scene in film, which might surprise some of you. It was a pleasure to talk with him and go see ‘TUSK‘. Enjoy!

Hollywood has found their New ‘Ben-Hur’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 16th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

ben-hur-8

We have been talking about the ‘Ben-Hur‘ remake for a while here at Boomstick HQ, and now we have heard a big piece of information on casting. First, let’s go over what we already know. We do know that MGM and Paramount have teamed up to make a big budget ‘Ben-Hur‘ remake with director Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch, Day Watch, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) to helm the film. We also reported  earlier last week that Morgan Freeman was cast in the film. He will play Ildarin, the man who teaches the slave Ben-Hur to become the big bad chariot racer he turns out to be. And for a while, we were hearing that studio execs were putting out the offer to Tom Hiddleston (Loki from ‘The Avengers‘). But that’s not the case now.

Hey everyone, Jana here,

ben-hur2

If you’re new to the site you may not know how I have railed against the habit film makers have of taking classic movies and re-tooling them into what they deem bigger and better. If you’re not new, sorry, had to point that out! Anyhow, I have certain rules that make a re-imagining somewhat acceptable. One of them is if the original has been out for more than 50 years, go for it. If there were only crappy and really horrid special effects in the original, I’m looking at you Bubo, then go for it, but you better knock that flick out of the park! I’m talking about mind-melting special effects and balls to the wall violence. There is something to be said for childhood favorites, no matter how awful that cutting edge technology was, now. This bit of news falls into both categories.

Hi, Jana here,

coens

If we were to talk about filmmakers that have a specific feel to their films there would be a wide variety of names on that list. But if we narrow the field down to filmmakers that are a wildly successful pair of brothers, Joel and Ethan Coen would undoubtedly fit the bill.

The Coen’s have a peppered legacy of complex films with ‘Raising Arizona‘, ‘Fargo‘, ‘The Big Lebowski‘ and ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou‘ among many others. Looks like the pair is not taking any time off from a career that has most recently been recognized with an Academy Award nomination for 2013’s ‘Inside Llewyn Davis‘. Universal Pictures has picked up ‘Hail, Caesar!‘ the latest original screenplay from the Coen’s. Besides writing the script, they will direct stars George Clooney and Josh Brolin in starring roles.

Film Review: ‘Robocop’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 11th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

Joel Kinnaman

Over the past year, I’ve been writing stories on the upcoming ‘Robocop‘ remake. As I found out more and more information about this reboot of the franchise, I was becoming less and less excited about it. It might of been the fact that it was getting a PG-13 rating, the change in the suit, or many of the other differences that were popping up from the original 1987 film that starred Peter Weller. Hell, even Weller himself said he was not looking forward to the remake and even compared his 1987 film to the likes of ‘Casablanca‘, which is hilarious.

Anne Fletcher is a woman of many talents, a choreographer, actress, producer and director. She directed ‘The Guilt Trip‘, ‘The Proposal‘ and ‘27 Dresses‘. Fletcher is in talks with MGM, writers David Feeney and John Quaintance to direct ‘Don’t Mess With Texas‘,  a female-driven comedy similar to 1988’s ‘Midnight Run‘. Reese Witherspoon (‘Legally Blonde’, ‘Walk The Line’) and Sofia Vergara (TV’s ‘Modern Family’, ‘Four Brothers’) are set to star.

‘The Addams Family’ Is Getting Revived!!! Snap. Snap.

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 31st, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

The-Addams-Family-01-4

MGM is rebooting ‘The Addams Family‘, but this time, instead of a live action feature film, it will be an animated movie in the same vein as ‘Monster House‘. Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun will be producing the project with Pamela Pettler writing the screenplay. Pettler wrote ‘Corpse Bride‘ and ‘Monster House’.

In late September, Third Man Records announced a sweet, hugely ambition project, ‘The Rise and Fall of Paramount Records: 1917-1937’,  chronicling a Wisconsin-based furniture company that produced some of the world’s most important records in the history of music. Third Man’s website titillated fans with a handful of awesome production photos of the set, but neglected to mention a price tag. That is, until now.

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 5th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Robocop_remake_fanposter

Here’s your first look at the remake of ‘Robocop‘ from director Jose Padilha. Joel Kinnaman, star of AMC’sThe Killing‘ will play Robocop. Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Abbie Cornish and Jay Baruchel co-star. It’s gonna be difficult to fill Peter Weller’s shoes in this, as well as make a gritty enough film.

Hi, Bryan Here….

rocky-ii

In what might be the best news of the day, MGM has set director Ryan Coogler along with actor Michael B. Jordan in developing a spinoff ‘Rocky‘ film called ‘Creed‘. Don’t worry, Sly Stallone will reprise Rocky again as a retired boxer, now trainer for Apollo Creed’s grandson, which will be played by Jordan. Coogler and Jordan most recently collaborated on the amazing film ‘Fruitvale Station‘, which you can read that review HERE.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Craig-Robinson-Rob-Corddr-001

I’m pretty excited about this.  I thought the first film was very funny. MGM must have thought the same thing as they are planning the sequel as we speak to the 2010 original.  Right now the project is in the talking stages, meaning the studio is having discussions with Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke to reprise their roles. At this moment, John Cusack is not involved with the project.

Hollywood is Remaking ‘Ben-Hur’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 15th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

ben-hur-movie-image-2

MGM is back in business.  With its success from ‘Skyfall‘ and ‘The Hobbit‘, the once bankrupt studio is rolling in the dough and is purchasing a project, which is a remake of ‘Ben-Hur‘ from 1959 that starred Charlton Heston. Keith Clarke wrote the spec script, which he has done a couple documentaries and a narrative film called ‘The Way Back‘, which starred Colin Farrell, Jim Sturgess, and Ed Harris.
