Dan M., here….

The fifth installment of Disney’s nearly $4 billion dollar franchise is a Pirates movie through and through. It is about 20 minutes too long, has a needlessly complex plot, fantastic action set pieces, and way too many characters. I found it to be a real roller coaster viewing experience, where some points I was loving every single second of what was on screen and others I wanted to check my phone to see how much longer was left. There were no scenes in this entire movie that I was just ‘Ok’ with. I was either loving it or tolerating it. When it was all over I was pleased with the ending and, more importantly, that it ended.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Poltergeist III’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 13th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

91do0Gkj2GL._SL1500_

THE FILM

The original ‘Poltergeist‘ film was a perfect mix of horror and comedy. It had the minds of Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper behind it and went on to financial and critical success. Of course, they made sequels to make more money, but we’ve often seen that more times than not, these sequels don’t embody the spirit of the original and can come off quite bad. The original film spawned two sequels and a TV Series along with the recent horrible remake. ‘Poltergeist II‘ had its share of great moments, due to the amazing visual effects work and the whole family coming back to reprise their roles, but that’s not the case with ‘Poltergeist III‘, which is no doubt, the worst film in the franchise.

Getting Deep with ‘Gods of Egypt’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 11th, 2017

Jennifer S., here….

gods-of-egypt-1

Firstly, this is my first real blog post; inspired by the fact that I finally got to view Gods of Egypt.  This was, like many Egyptian Mythology based movies were, a movie that I was looking forward to finally viewing.  I’m uncertain as to why I decided this was the topic I wanted to delve back into writing for, but here it is.  I feel two ways about it.  I’m going to express initially that I enjoyed it from an objective standpoint, it was fun and colorful and full of some interesting effect that got them right as often as they got them wrong… Giant Heads… #BobbleGods.  Now I’m going to express my displeasure, as anyone who has a passing interest in actual mythology realizes, it’s terrible.  The story is anyway, but the plotline is okay… and personally, I feel the message was all wrong about the afterworld.

Film Review: ‘Office Christmas Party’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 9th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

L-R: Kate McKinnon as Mary Winetoss, Jason Bateman as Josh Parker, T.J. Miller as Clay Vanstone, Olivia Munn as Tracey Hughes in OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, and Reliance Entertainment

We’ve all been to Christmas Parties at the office before, and this time of year, when it’s Christmas, we get a plethora of holiday themed films. Well, the end of 2016 gives us ‘Office Christmas Party‘, the vulgar rated R Christmas movie that centers around a giant office Christmas party that’s made by the filmmaking duo of Will Speck and Josh Gordon (‘Blades of Glory‘). Does this offer any insight or something new to the comedy Christmas genre? No, not at all. That being said, this is a highly entertaining and hilarious film that I can see myself watching every year around the holidays. With the all-star cast, good soundtrack, funny dialogue, and an office party that we would all want to attend – ‘Office Christmas Party‘ is a success.

WWE: TLC 2016 in Dallas!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 5th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

205_tlc_12042016ej_4165-7db86e24eda82a9d788ce93bac3a469e-1200x675

WWE has just finished its 8th TLC pay-per-view right here in Dallas, TX. No, TLC does not mean Tender Loving Care or even the R&B group from the 90s. It stands for Tables-Ladders-Chairs and is considered the “hardcore” PPV of the year for WWE. This was a Smackdown Live brand PPV event where every championship title was on the line. Between chair matches, ladder matches, table matches, and an all-encompassing TLC match to end the night, it’s no doubt that each and every superstar will be sore for next few days after all of their bodies were flung into these steel and wooden pieces of furniture. The event took place at American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX to a big crowd, however it was far from a sell-out. That didn’t stop the crowd from cheering and booing their favorite superstars at all, even though it wasn’t as crazy a crowd as ‘Wrestlemania 32‘.

Film Reviw: ‘Bleed For This’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 18th, 2016

Beka P., here…

maxresdefault

People were literally on the edges of their seats watching the story of Vinny Pazienza unfold in Bleed for This. I have never experienced an audience as collectively involved or as vocal as the one watching this film. The audience gasped, threw their hands over their mouths and their eyes, winced in pain and breathed sighs of reliefs almost in sync with one another. Just recently I told someone how it always helps to have a winning sports team (I’m looking at you Dak Prescott) because it brings people together; the same holds true for a good movie. This film has both- it’s a feel good film about sports. What more can you ask for? Oh, action, suspense, laughs and love you say? It’s got those, too.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Finding Dory’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 17th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

screen-shot-2016-11-17-at-10-58-16-am

THE FILM

Another Pixar sequel is here, and this time it takes place under water with ‘Finding Dory‘, the sequel to the 2003 hit ‘Finding Nemo‘. Wow, has it really been thirteen years since Pixar made $940 million off that cute orange fish? Well, Pixar is in the sequel making business these days, and with ‘Finding Dory‘, they seem to have made an enjoyable and entertaining sequel that has some funny moments, but misses the mark on the heart and soul of the first film – not to mention the lack of creative story telling devices that the first movie had throughout. I’m sure this sequel will make a huge splash with all audiences, but the kids are more likely to eat this up than the adults.

Film Review: ‘Ouija: Origin of Evil’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 19th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

It’s Halloween season and the big horror movie studio Blumhouse has released another film in their canon franchise with their famous business plan. That movie is ‘Ouija: Origin of Evil‘, which is a prequel to ‘Ouija‘ from 2014. I know. I get suspicious too when a studio wants to start telling prequel stories to the masses. Most of the time, they don’t work, but Blumhouse and filmmaker Mike Flanagan (Oculus) really raised the bar with this prequel that is terrifying, fun, and connects the original film nicely, despite some silly problems here and there.

THE FILM

Back in 1988, an excellent creative team consisting of director Tom Holland, writer Don Mancini, producer David Kirschner, and visual effects wizard Kevin Yagher got together and made ‘Child’s Play‘ and psychological thriller turned horror film about a serial killer’s soul that is transferred into a kid’s toy doll and wreaks havoc on this family in Chicago. Nobody knew at the time, but this small little film would be an instant cult classic with rave reviews from audiences and critics alike for years to come. Not only that, but this film hatched numerous sequels and created one of the most famous horror icons in pop culture – Chucky.

Hey guys, Jana here,

MANHATTAN NIGHT BD OCARD 3D

Based on Colin Harrison’s acclaimed novel ‘Manhattan Nocturne‘ (a New York Times Notable Book of the Year), ‘Manhattan Night‘ tells the story of Porter Wren (Adrien Brody), a New York City tabloid writer with an appetite for scandal. On the beat he sells murder, tragedy and anything that passes for the truth. At home he is a model family man, devoted to his loving wife (Jennifer Beals). But when a seductive stranger (Yvonne Strahovski) asks him to dig into the unsolved murder of her filmmaker husband Simon (Campbell Scott), he can’t resist. In this modern version of a classic film noir, we follow Porter as he is drawn into a very nasty case of sexual obsession and blackmail – one that threatens his job, his marriage, and his life.
