Film Review: ‘A Wrinkle in Time’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 8th, 2018

I really wanted to like A Wrinkle in Time more than I did. I gave it my best shot, but in the end, the only thing I can honestly say was that it had lots of great colors. Perhaps it was my high expectations for a Disney film, plus Oprah Winfrey and Mindy Kaling that set me up for disappointment, but regardless, I was left feeling let down in a film that I knew practically nothing about. I have never read the 1962 Madeleine L’Engle novel, so I honestly had no clue what the plot was but whatever, it’s Disney, it’s gonna be good. Well…

Blu-ray Review: ‘COCO’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 26th, 2018

THE FILM

(This film portion was written by Beka Perlstein.)

If you’re like me, you’ve seen the previews for Coco and thought, what is this movie and how is Disney going to make a movie all about death translate to kids. It didn’t stop me from jumping at the chance to preview the film and now I submit my apologies to Disney and the world that I ever doubted their creative genius. I’m loco for Coco and you will be, too.

Disney and Lucasfilm are bringing ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘ to 4K and UHD,  as well as Blu-ray, DVD, and digital streaming. The film will have a Dolby Vision image and HDR10 along with a Dolby Atmos audio mix. Needless to say, I can’t wait. You’ll be able to watch the film on digital streaming on March 13th and then be able to purchase the actual discs on March 27th. This is the first release from Disney that will feature both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and what a way to debut it is. In addition to these technical specs, there will be 14 deleted scenes that have never been seen before as well as some behind the scenes, and audio commentary. I just can’t wait. Below is the full details of what you can expect on the release.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Ryan Reynolds‘ star power just gets higher and higher, and it looks like he’s not slowing down in any way, shape or form. The ‘Deadpool‘ ringer’s production company, Maximum Effort, has signed a 3-year first-look deal with Fox. This is a timely announcement as Twentieth Century Fox’s feature assets will be transferred to Disney. It looks like they’ve found their first project and it’s going to be interesting.

I’ve got an “INCREDIBLE” update for you!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 23rd, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

The Incredibles‘ are making a comeback and Disney released character portraits in the most trendy, pop culture-ish way possible, as selfies matched with their artistic counter-part. Google’s Arts and Culture app has been the new driving force powering social media and everyone is doing it. I even tried to get a match on my dog, Duke, aka John Wayne, but there’s not recognition for pets, yet. Along with the images of the voice actors, we see stylized artwork of their on-screen persona, and it’s awesome to see anything coming from Disney Pixar about the upcoming sequel. But that’s not all they’ve given us. We get four new images, but we also get some plot details!

Favorite Movies of 2017!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 27th, 2017

Was 2017 a great year for movies? Of course it was. There were some excellent films to be released in 2017. There were also some bad ones for sure, but the focus on this article are some of the Best films that stuck with me long after viewing. Most people will give you their Top 10 list, but this is no Top 10, because there are just so many movies that I loved and feel passionate about, that I find it difficult and unpleasing to rank them.

Instead, these are my favorite movies of 2017, which I hope you’ve seen already. If you haven’t yet, you’re in for a real treat and I can’t wait for you to see them. Some of these films are still in theaters, while some are on Netflix, 4K UHD, and Blu-ray, so you’ll be able to quickly see any of these if you haven’t. I watched over 270 movies that were released in 2017 and these are my absolute favorites. I hope you get to see all of these, because I know you’ll love them. In no particular order…..

Film Review: ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 12th, 2017

There is always hope for a new ‘Star Wars‘ movie. Two years ago with ‘The Force Awakens‘, Disney and JJ Abrams reinvigorated the franchise into becoming the #1 movie of all time. Not only was it financially successful, but it brought a new love to the film series, since the prequels almost destroyed all that ‘Star Wars‘ had built up since 1977. It was a new day in the ‘Star Wars‘ universe with new characters crossing paths with our favorite original characters, which made our collective nerdy hearts soar with happiness and nostalgia.

4K UHD Review: Westworld Season 1!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 11th, 2017

THE SERIES

HBO’s new flagship show ‘Westworld‘ entered with a big bang in its first season. Since ‘Game of Thrones‘ is ending soon, HBO was ahead of the game and needed its new sci-fi action original show and ‘Westworld‘ was its name. That rhymed a little bit. Based on Michael Crichton’s story and film from 1973 of the same name, ‘Westworld‘ takes a theme park (much like Disneyland) to the next level. What do I mean by that? Well, let’s say you entered the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ ride at Disneyland.

Film Review: ‘Florida Project’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 26th, 2017

The Florida Project is the most important movie of 2017. It is a beautiful look at the resiliency and hope of childhood. It is also the most powerful depiction of a segment of the American population often overlooked in America and certainly passed over in film. Not outright poverty but just a group of people doing enough to survive.

Written By Bryan Kluger:

THE FILM

(This film review portion was written by Dan Moran.)

The fifth installment of Disney’s nearly $4 billion dollar franchise is a Pirates movie through and through. It is about 20 minutes too long, has a needlessly complex plot, fantastic action set pieces, and way too many characters. I found it to be a real roller coaster viewing experience, where some points I was loving every single second of what was on screen and others I wanted to check my phone to see how much longer was left. There were no scenes in this entire movie that I was just ‘Ok’ with. I was either loving it or tolerating it. When it was all over I was pleased with the ending and, more importantly, that it ended.

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

A week or two ago, there was a disturbance in the force as Kathleen Kennedy, LucasFilm, and Disney fired their Star Wars IX director Colin Trevorrow. You can read about that HERE. Turns out, the studio execs couldn’t handle having a big creative force behind Star Wars. The search was on for another director. Were they gonna go with another indie filmmaker with good credentials or play it safe like they did when they replaced Miller and Lord with the capable Ron Howard?

Star Wars Episode IX does NOT have a director anymore!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 5th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Wait, what? This shit again? Seriously, those Star Wars execs, including Kathleen Kennedy need to get their shit together, because this is the 2nd time in a couple of months this has happened. Back in June, Chris Miller and Phil Lord were let go from the Han Solo spin-off movie mid-way through the shoot for bullshit reasons. They brought on the capable, yet safe director of Ron Howard to finish the job. At least Episode IX wasn’t in full on production yet, but we did know that Colin Trevorrow was set to direct after his huge success on Jurassic World. That is not the case anymore. Trevorrow is out of the director’s seat, leaving Disney and Lucas Film to  find another filmmaker.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Movie is Happening!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 17th, 2017

Disney is looking to fill out its Star Wars slate for the years to come so they can bank billions of dollars in the coming years. One of those films is going to be centered on Obi-Wan Kenobi, who was originally played by Alec Guinness and then Ewan McGregor in the horrible prequels. Obi-Wan is the Jedi Master who nudges Luke Skywalker out the door to become a Jedi.

4K UHD Review: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 16th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

THE FILM

First off, my favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe film is ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘. I love the weird, oddball, and sometimes anti-hero characters so much, the dialogue, and the feel of the whole movie, that I really connected to it and enjoyed it on every level. This group of heroes are not the norm and I relish in all their conflicts, endearing moments, and witty banter. That brings us to Vol. 2 that reunites all of our favorite characters as they go on missions to save the galaxy.

This movie sounds like so much fun and a little like that 1980’s horror film by Lamberto Bava called Demons, which followed a bunch of people attending a movie screening of a horror film, only to find out that there was an evil force that turned them into blood thirsty demons. This new film though is called Blood Fest and comes from the Rooster Teeth team, which brought us Red vs Blue and Lazer Team.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is coming to 4K UHD!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 13th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

I can’t believe it’s finally happening. Disney is releasing their first 4K UHD release with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which couldn’t be a more perfect debut release in the new format. Disney has been holding out for a while now, while other studios have been releasing their new and vintage films in 4K. It was only a matter of time. There will be Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos included on the release as well, along with quite a few fun bonus features. You’ll be able to watch the film on digital platforms, starting August 8th, and purchase the actual 4K UHD Disc on August 22nd. So now I’m impatiently waiting for Disney to start announcing some vintage vault films and shows, re-releasing in 4K UHD. It’s only a matter of time, but expect my wallet to dwindle down with the following announcements.

Look Who Will Be in the Live Action Lion King Remake!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 10th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Unfortunately, Disney is remaking The Lion King in the form of a live-action debacle, similar to the recent horrid turd of a film Beauty and the Beast. Fortunately though, they have Jon Favreau in the director’s chair. I trust him. He gave us Iron Man and the recent live-action remake of The Jungle Book, which was loads better than that Beast movie. There are literally no humans in The Lion King story, unlike Jungle Book or Beauty and the Beast and if it follows the same pattern with the same exact camera shots and songs as its animated predecessor, it’s more than likely going to lose whatever emotion and lovable quality it had in the lifeless eyes of the CGI live-action animals.

Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #7!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 29th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Back in 1941, Disney was at a low point. They had lost money on Pinocchio and Fantasia and were facing some nasty cuts and money loss. It was up to this new little film about an elephant with giant ears to put the company back on top again. I’m of course talking about Dumbo, which was originally supposed to be a short film of only a few minutes, but ended up running at just an hour long. Still short by today’s standards. Out of the 1940s, Dumbo was the most financially successful film, brining in almost double it’s cost and was met with a ton of great reviews. I mean, who doesn’t love Dumbo?

Ron Howard Shoots Second on Star Wars Han Solo Film!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 22nd, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

It’s official now. Ron Howard has taken over directing duties on the upcoming Star Wars untitled Han Solo spinoff movie. Yesterday, we got the unfortunate news that Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired after creative differences with the studio heads, mainly Kathleen Kennedy and Lawrence Kasdan on the tone of the film. Lord and Miller (The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street) spent almost five months making this Han Solo film, but again, were fired for having a different style than what the studio was expecting. It sent fans in an uproar for sure and for good reason. It’s ultra rare that studios will fire directors this late in the game.

Soundtracks we want to see released on Vinyl!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 15th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

preview

I just love soundtracks to movies. I always have and I believe I always will. There is something about a score to a film that just perks me up in all the right ways and inspires my creative side, whether it be to write a screenplay or go back an watch that old film I love. Music is an integral part to films and is considered to be the mojo of every movie. I’m sure we’ve all seen that odd YouTube video of the final scene in Star Wars: A New Hope, where Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Chewbacca walk down a crowded arena to receive their medals to zero music. It’s super weird and awkward with no music, but just random sound effects of footsteps and a rare cough, laugh, and Chewie’s roar. John Williams did such a great job, as he always does with Star Wars music, but that final scene of music really puts your emotions on full blast. It’s all from the soundtrack too.

THE FILM

Since the release of ‘The Force Awakens‘, Disney will be releasing a ‘Star Wars‘ film every year for the foreseeable future. Well, it’s been a year since ‘The Force Awakens‘, which means it’s time for another ‘Star Wars‘ film, and luckily for us, we get ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘. I’m so glad that Disney is allowing up and coming, young  filmmakers a chance to have a go at ‘Star Wars‘, because director Gareth Edwards (‘Monsters‘ and ‘Godzilla‘) has knocked it out of the park, even though there were some re-shoots with writer Tony Gilroy (‘Michael Clayton‘ and ‘The Bourne‘ films). This is the ‘Star Wars‘ film we have wanted for a long time, in that we get to see some characters do some truly amazing and badass things that we’ve never seen before, and a return to some of those classic set pieces and ships.

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 14th, 2017

Dan M., here….

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991) is in the top 2 Disney animated movies of all-time. I’ll only allow The Lion King, which has a live action version due in 2019 or 2020, to be ranked ahead of it. This isn’t a debate. These are facts. Beauty and the Beast (animated) is a masterpiece from songs to characters, which is why I loved that this new live-action movie stayed so true to the animated version. It was an extremely enjoyable two hours with some really great moments and I look forward to seeing it again.

THE FILM

Moana‘ is the latest animated film from Disney, releasing a few months after their big hit ‘Zootopia’. No matter what film Disney releases, the usual messages and tone are consistent in every film. However, Disney magically manages to make each film feel very fresh, unique, and original with excellent characters, animation, and story lines that not only captivate me with each film, but to the masses as well. ‘Moana’ is no different here, as it looks visually stunning, as well as have an top notch story with excellent voice talent and songs.

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 6th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Screen Shot 2017-03-06 at 12.22.19 PM

While Disney is busy making ‘Marvel‘ movies and new ‘Star Wars‘ films, they are finding it difficult to make original films these days, which is why they are taking their back catalogue of animated movies and remaking them in the live-action format. We’ve seen it with ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘Cinderella’, and the recent ‘Snow White’ films. Disney has no plans on stopping either, as with the release of ‘Beauty and the Beast‘ and their upcoming ‘Lion King’ live action remake. After watching this new version of ‘Beauty and the Beast‘, I don’t have high hopes for future live action Disney films whatsoever.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Pinocchio’ Signature Series!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 13th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

THE FILM

Pinocchio‘ is hands down one of the best films ever made. And it was made by Walt Disney more than 70 years ago in animated form. That’s no joke. On the surface, ‘Pinocchio‘ seems to be about a wooden toy who wants to be a real boy, but right below the surface, there is so much going on, that I cant help but think that Walt himself and his collaborators had many more things to say with this film, which is to say the least, very different than most Disney movies out there – even today.

The Lego Batman Movie or Deadpool for Families.

When it was released in 2014, The Lego Movie shocked me with how great it was. It was hilarious, had a brilliant concept, and a big reveal that was executed perfectly. It is also one of the few non-Disney/Pixar movies to have a ton of heart. Since that time I’ve seen some Lego Frozen shorts on Disney Channel and some Star Wars Lego stuff thanks to my kids and the humor is pretty top notch. The Lego Batman Movie takes all of these elements and created a truly laugh out loud movie, with a fun story, and some heartwarming moments. It is an A+ family movie.

Hey guys, Jana here,

1347632370_woody_2

Woody Harrelson has been all over lately, we’ve seen him in ‘The Hunger Games‘ films, ‘LBJ‘, ‘Triple 9‘, and ‘The Duel‘. One place I’d never thought he would be is in the ‘Star Wars‘ world. However he’s in talks to play Han Solo’s mentor in the spinoff featuring Alden Ehrenreich in the role of the scruffy, nerf-herder himself.

Film Review: ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 13th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Blu-ray Review: ‘Finding Dory’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 17th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

screen-shot-2016-11-17-at-10-58-16-am

THE FILM

Another Pixar sequel is here, and this time it takes place under water with ‘Finding Dory‘, the sequel to the 2003 hit ‘Finding Nemo‘. Wow, has it really been thirteen years since Pixar made $940 million off that cute orange fish? Well, Pixar is in the sequel making business these days, and with ‘Finding Dory‘, they seem to have made an enjoyable and entertaining sequel that has some funny moments, but misses the mark on the heart and soul of the first film – not to mention the lack of creative story telling devices that the first movie had throughout. I’m sure this sequel will make a huge splash with all audiences, but the kids are more likely to eat this up than the adults.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Jungle Book’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 30th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

61Pcq43NUDL

THE FILM

How many renditions have there been of ‘The Jungle Book‘? More than a dozen over the years for sure, and it seems like Disney has more than just one project of ‘The Jungle Book‘ in play at the moment, or shall I say ‘The Jungle Book‘, meaning Disney has one and Warner Bros. has one.  The first project is Jon Favreau’s version, which is a live-action film, based on Rudyard Kipling’s famous book. The film itself is stunningly beautiful, as we see in the first shot of the film, which is deep inside the jungle with the young Mowgli running and hopping through the trees. The use of 3D here was actually quite good, specifically the amount of depth it gave the film and surrounded you with all that is the jungle.

Film Review: ‘Pete’s Dragon’ (2016)!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 12th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Petes-Dragon-Movie-Disney-2016

Disney is knocking out some remakes to their beloved classics as of recently and it seems that they are enlisting the help of some great indie filmmakers to take the reigns of their future tentpole films and revamps. The latest being the remake of ‘Pete’s Dragon‘, which originally came out in 1977 and mixed live action with animation. It was a big hit for the studio and became universally loves by children of the 70s and 80s. Cut to present day, and we have Disney making a decent size budget live-action remake of the film with state-of-the-art visual effects and A-List talent behind the film. Not to mention a great indie filmmaker from the DFW area named David Lowery (Ain’t Them Body Saints), to co-write and direct this remake.

Film Review: ‘The Secret Life of Pets’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 7th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

The-Secret-Life-of-Pets-3

It seems like there are a wealth of animated talking animal movies these days. With Pixar, Disney, and DreamWorks releasing ‘Zootopia‘, ‘The Good Dinosaur‘, ‘Finding Dory‘ and ‘Kung Fu Panda 3‘ recently, it only seems fair that Universal dipped their hands into the sub-genre as well with ‘The Secret Life of Pets‘. Universal’s animation studio Illumination Entertainment brought us ‘Despicable Me‘ and those darn ‘Minions‘ to the big screen, which has made the entertainment business billions of dollars. It seems logical for the studio to cash in on the talking animal genre now, since everyone else is doing it, however with an already over-crowded market for these films, ‘The Secret Life of Pets‘ may fall short of beating out ‘Zootopia‘ and ‘Finding Dory‘ in both the financial and critical realms. I’m not saying that ‘The Secret Life of Pets‘ is a bad movie or anything. In fact there are some great moments that are funny and charming, but it loses itself in the second half of the film when it becomes an action-caper movie that becomes over-the-top and even drags in its short run time of less than 90 minutes.

Rip-offs are never as good as the original, whether we’re discussing, a pair of not-so Jimmy Choos, your stylish almost Dior handbag that is stamped proudly with lettering that flakes off after a few days use because it isn’t quite top brand quality, also that bag will begin unraveling at the seams, so avoid it, and invest in quality. No, I don’t believe that the manufacturer producing knock-offs is unaware of their similar product to one that cost 8 times as much as theirs, they’re shady AF and purposely going after a devoted customer base because it’s easier to steal customers than to cultivate your own. I don’t believe knock-offs only exist in the fashion industry. The entertainment industry has their own versions of the act.

In our stadium seats with our overpriced popcorn, jumbo sodas and Mike and Ike’s, we get swept away into a world that, sometimes fortunately, is not the one we’ll walk back to, squinting in the daylight after experiencing the action, drama, laughs, epic heights and drastic lows a well-instructed cast has just delivered, and Favreau is among the best at drawing those emotions from a cast.

I can’t believe it’s finally here. Ten years since the last ‘Star Wars‘ movie, which was ‘Episode III‘ by George Lucas. In the decade that followed, we all thought we would never see another ‘Star Wars‘ feature film again, since Lucas himself destroyed and ruined the prequel trilogy and continued to alter the original trilogy to dried up mess of movies that are almost unrecognizable. Fortunately for every ‘Star Wars‘ fan in the world, he sold his production company that included the rights to ‘Star Wars‘ to Disney for a modest amount of $4 billion.

And if does win, we all go streaking. That being said…I can’t believe that ‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl‘ was not nominated for anything. Come on. It’s one of the BEST films of the year. It’s also interesting to see no love for the final season of ‘Mad Men’ her either. Oh well.

Here is the list of nominees:

Hey guys, Jana here,

Grease: Live‘ has been in the works for a while and I, for one, have been incredibly skeptical as to how a live TV performance can hold a candle to the movie I can quote in my sleep and hold on a pedestal of awesome. Remembering the live version of ‘Peter Pan’ with Christopher Walken and just how incredibly un-wowed (I think that’s a word!), I was. Then it hit me, I’m trying to compare the performances movie = movie instead of looking at it how I should have, as a filmed theatre performance. So now, after seeing the first pics released from the show, I might be able to appreciate this in a whole new light.

Chloe Grace Moretz Boards ‘The Little Mermaid’!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Nov 7th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

Chloe-Grace-Moretz-07

The latest in the litany of film tendencies is the hugely popular live-action fairy tale. While Disney may have made a mint on pioneering the genre, they’re not the only film company to have made the jump. Working Title and Universal are working the prototype and their next title receiving the live-action treatment is ‘The Little Mermaid‘.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

starwarsposter.0

I can’t believe that a new ‘Star Wars‘ movie is just a couple months away. Disney has just released the movie’s official poster, and no this is not the teaser poster from last year. This is the main event poster, the one you’ll want hanging in that prime spot above your fire place where all your fellow ‘Star Wars’ friends can admire it.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Tomorrowland’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 15th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

THE FILM

There’s one hell of a cast and crew at work here for Disney’s ‘Tomorrowland‘, which is loosely based on the famous theme park at Disney resorts. Directed by Brad Bird (‘The Incredibles‘, ‘Ratatouille), produced by Damon Lindelof (‘Lost‘ and ‘Star Trek‘), and starring George ClooneyHugh Laurie, and Britt Robertson, ‘Tomorrowland‘ is a throwback to those old innovative Disney films full of adventure. I felt like a kid again through its two hour run time as I was watching each suspenseful and fun moment on the IMAX screen. That being said, ‘Tomorrowland‘ does have a few problems, but fortunately the good outweighs the bad this time around.
