THE IRISHMAN – Film Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 20th, 2019

“The Irishman is a perfect storm of Scorsese mafia films over the years, culminating in what seems like his final act in the genre.”

The story of Jimmy Hoffa, Frank Sheeran, and his mafia syndicate has never been told as flawlessly as new film The Irishman. While it might not be Scorsese’s best film, it’s definitely Scorsese at his absolute best behind the camera as he weaves a multi-decade tale of crime with a myriad of characters that could be considered the greatest mob story ever told. Even at 77 years old, Scorsese has shown no signs of slowing down or shying away from brutality as The Irishman has plenty of.

Batman 30th Anniversary – 4K UHD Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 11th, 2019

In 1989, the birth of summer blockbusters became real with Tim Burton’s Batman. Before that, the superhero genre was not the behemoth it was today with A-list actors, 9-figure budgets, and compelling dramatic tones. In fact, it was quite the opposite. Us comic books fans had to settle for slapstick one-liners in low budget sets and costumes to get our favorite heroes on screen. It wasn’t until that summer where everything changed and paved the way for films like X-Men, the MCU, and Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight franchise. It was a strange decision too, but Warner Bros. and DC Comics decided on the young filmmaker Tim Burton to take on the large budget and big named comic book adaptation of Batman. Until then, Burton had only done Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure and Beetlejuice.

Three years ago, Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro) and Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) were introduced as FBI agents fighting the war on drugs in Sicario. The duo returns in Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado and the age-old strategy of pitting one enemy against another is re-imagined. Why fight all of the cartels one at a time when you could incite them to fight each other? Enter the daughter of a cartel king and a bad little girl, Isabel Reyes (Isabela Moner). Blu-ray Review: Black Panther!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 15th, 2018

THE FILM

Going into the 18th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you’d hope you wouldn’t see the same thing over and over that we’ve been watching since Iron Man debuted a decade ago. As the years have passed on by, watching a Marvel movie became something tedious, even though most of the films are fun and enjoyable. Don’t get me wrong, Marvel has done a great job with each and every film they’ve put out, but moving into their 18th film, it seems like we’ve seen almost everything and every action scene is something recycled from the previous, whether it be superheroes jumping from car to car during car chases or aliens come out of the sky and destroying the planet. Luckily for all of us Marvel fans, ‘Black Panther‘ breathes new and creative life into a somewhat stale film series in the best ways possible.

Blu-ray Review: The Big Sick!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 27th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

THE FILM

The Film portion is written by Beka Perlstein:

If The Big Sick isn’t on your must see movie list, do yourself a favor and rewrite the list. This film is the real life love story of how actor/comedian Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley) met his girlfriend and (spoiler alert) now wife, Emily Gordon. It’s not another Fault in Our Stars or Me Before You, it’s so much more than a love sick story. Behind the romantic comedy model is a story about a Pakistani immigrant who is struggling with identity, relationships, family, career and religion. To put it simply- he’s just trying to figure out this thing we call life.

Film Review: Snatched!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 12th, 2017

Beka P., here….

Screen Shot 2017-05-16 at 9.45.28 AM

So, Snatched won’t be winning any Oscars, but if you go in with incredibly low expectations, you can’t be that let down. It has some pretty funny parts, it has some first class actors (Amy Schumer is not one of them), and at the end of the day it’s a film about how much you need your mom and we can generally all get on board with that.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Doctor Strange’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 28th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

61HRk7rEWAL

THE FILM

The next franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes with mystical and magical powers in ‘Doctor Strange‘, which is a damn good start to this new character. ‘Doctor Strange‘ was created by Steve Ditko and first appeared in Strange Tales #110 back in 1963. ‘Doctor Strange‘ or Stephen Strange is a highly intelligent surgeon who is in the top of his field. In an accident, he loses the use of his hands, which leads him to seek out alternate methods of healing. This brings him to a mystical and magical place across the globe where he meets ‘The Ancient One’ amongst other sorcerers that help him heal spiritually and physically.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Beyond Redemption’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 6th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

71A-ucjMyYL._SL1004_

THE FILM

Beyond Redemption‘ is an English language martial arts film from Canada that is made by and stars a ton of excellent stuntmen that you’ve all seen in big budget blockbusters over the years. That comes with a bittersweet taste though. On one hand, you have some very good fight scenes that are well choreographed and that pack a punch. On the other hand, the acting, script, and storyline are pretty much rote and lack any real quality in story telling.

Blu-ray Review: ‘I Am Wrath’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 16th, 2016

Jonathan A., here…

51iemeb5unl

THE FILM

John Travolta stars in Director Chuck Russell’sI Am Wrath,” which follows the story of a former black ops agent that is out for vengeance on a biblical scale, after his wife is murdered by a group of thugs.  Not exactly a newbie to the scene, Russell has directed a handful of moderately successful movies such as “The Mask,” “Eraser” and even the third installment of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.  This movie meets the standards set by his previous films; Not exactly a good movie, but not bad, either.

Get on the Stick with ‘The Flash’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 12th, 2016

Wade D., Here…

Screen Shot 2016-05-12 at 8.23.01 AM

Hey everyone! So it seems like my first iteration wasn’t a total failure, because I got another chance to Get on the Stick. Just in case you missed Episode 1, here we are trying to apprise you to some sort of greatness that Boomstick just hasn’t touched on enough. So the goal here is to enlighten, entertain, and perhaps titillate you in a way that hasn’t been done quite yet. If you feel like you may be getting over titillated… turn off that Misty Mundae flick (with this crowd I’m guessing it’s either SpiderBabe or Lord of the G-Strings) and start rambling off batting orders from 1970’s MLB teams. We’ll do our best to keep spoilers at a minimum, so relax. The term “Get on the Stick” is all about getting to work, so no more blather… Let’s get to it!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

53fe9c57-1190-4d61-b197-fcda11fc89af

The awards show is January 10 on NBC hosted by Ricky Gervais. First off, let’s look at something AWESOME here. ‘MAD MAX: FURY ROAD‘ is nominated for BEST PICTURE. It needs to win. It should win. And if does win, we all go streaking. That being said…I can’t believe that ‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl‘ was not nominated for anything. Come on. It’s one of the BEST films of the year. It’s also interesting to see no love for the final season of ‘Mad Men’ her either. Oh well.

Here is the list of nominees:

Film Review: ‘Hector and the Search For Happiness’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 25th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

hector-and-the-search-for-happiness-Simon-Pegg

You can’t help but love Simon Pegg. His roles in Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy ‘Shaun of The Dead‘, ‘Hot Fuzz‘, and ‘The World’s End‘ are legendary. His work on the recent ‘Star Trek‘ films, ‘Paul‘, and in the ‘Mission Impossible‘ films have been excellent and very comical. That aside, i love seeing Pegg work on dramatic films, because not only is he one of the best comedic actors around right now, but he is also one hell of a dramatic actor, and his new film ‘Hector and the Search for Happiness‘ highlights that.

In a not unusual move, scheduling conflicts have cropped up on the set for ‘Freeheld‘. Zach Galifianakis was originally on tap to play the male lead in the film based on a documentary about domestic partner benefits. The furry, funny man had to step down due to other commitments, making way for Steve Carell to step into the vacated position. The docu followed the story of Laurel Hester and Stacie Andree as the pair fought to amend the Domestic Partnership Act, which would grant pension benefits to domestic partners of all New Jersey public employees. Ellen Page and Julianne Moore are under contract to play the couple.
