Blu-Ray Review: ‘Killer Joe’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 11th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…..

51IZhKUuTDL

I didn’t know what quite to expect from ‘Killer Joe’, but after watching it, I got more than I bargained for.  ’Killer Joe’ was directed by William Friedkin who is most known for directing ‘The French Connection’, ‘The Exorcist’, and the recent film ‘Bug’.  Friedkin has been out of the spotlight for some time now, but his return with ‘Killer Joe’, the 76 year old Oscar winning director proves he has not missed a step.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Disney’s Peter Pan’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 6th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

It was so great to see this newly remastered ‘Peter Pan’ from Disney. The image is pristine and is the best this animated film has ever looked.  Plus, Disney decided to give it a 7.1 lossless DTS-HD audio mix, which just sounds amazing.  I can’t believe it has been since 1953 since we first watched this animated instant classic capture the hearts of many.  It’s truly remarkable to have this on blu-ray.

Film Review: ‘Warm Bodies’

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 31st, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

new-uk-poster-for-warm-bodies-124023-1000-100

Jonathan Levine’s adaptation of Isaac Marion’sWarm Bodies‘ focuses more on an undead romance than any political or social issues, with having just enough blood and guts for genre fans.  I have to say that this zombie flick ranks right up there with some of the best living dead films ever made.  It’s original, fresh, and has an amazing soundtrack.  I have no doubt that this lovable zombie movie will make tons of money at the box office.

I know all of you have been on the edge of your seats in anticipation for the sequel series of ‘Boy Meets World‘, which is titled ‘Girl Meets World‘, since we reported on the new show from Disney.  We said that the new series will focus on the daughter of Cory and Topanga, which Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel have officially signed on to reprise their roles in the new series.  Well, Disney has now cast the daughter role, which went to 11 year old Rowan Blanchard.

Film Review: ‘Red Dawn’

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 19th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

I admit, I was a bit apprehensive heading into watching this remake of the 1984 action film that starred Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, Harry Dean Stanton, and Jennifer Grey.  The 80’s film was a big hit and is still good today. John Milius ,the director of the original film, made an imprint on the minds of the youth back then with a ‘what if’ scenario and a heck of a fun film.  This remake, while it is certainly very cheesy and awkwardly bad in tiny moments, the overall picture is a fine and worth-while remake despite its many faults.

The Polyphonic Spree Does Christmas

by NapkinArt on Oct 23rd, 2012

It might not yet be Halloween, and there are still a few days left to carve up that jack-o-lantern for the front porch, but The Polyphonic Spree is ready to ring in the Christmas spirit with or without you, with their first full length holiday album, “Holidaydream: Songs of the Holidays, Vol. 1”.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I have to say this preceding review may be partially biased, as I spent a good many months leading up to the album’s release, working on the album art, layout, pressing of vinyl, etc., so needless to say, I’m quite thrilled to see (and hear) the album’s existence.

Jason Blum and his Blumhouse production company have jumped into the Haunted House business.  Blumhouse Productions was the company that got behind the ‘Paranormal Activity’ films.  “Visitors will tour the twisting corridors of an eerily haunted theater whose stage was home to one of the world’s most deranged, dark art magicians during the heyday of 1920s vaudeville. That is, until one tragic performance when his assistant climbed into a magical box and vanished forever. The theater was shut down instantly and permanently closed to the public … until now.”  Sounds cool, but not as cool as Eli Roth’s Goretorium.  Press release below.

Bryan Reviews ‘The Three Musketeers’ 3D Blu-Ray!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 22nd, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

This version of ‘The Three Musketeers’ is extremely bittersweet for me.  More on the bitter side than the sweet side.  I’m not a fan of the director by any means, but the casting was great.  I love the story of the ‘The Three Musketeers’, and I don’t really think it was done well this time.  However, the actual video and audio quality of the disc is very much demo worthy.  It looks and sounds fantastic.  But other than that, this ‘The Three Musketeers’ is forgettable.

BRIDGE – Chapter Fourteen

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

As always, the duality that came from channeling Polly gave Bridge a headache.  Or, in this case, worsened the one he already had.  Most humans—himself included—had difficulty maintaining a single point of focus, much less two, but here he was.  And there he was as well.  On the physical plane, he was seated in a chair in his office, gazing into the eyes of a dead man.  At the same time, his body was also floating weightlessly in space, surrounded on all sides by tiny flickering lights, hovering like fireflies. I don’t even know where to begin with ‘G-Force’.  I just can’t fathom that anyone thought that a bunch of guinea pigs that can talk and are actually super spies would get greenlit and made into a film.  Well that happened and kids love it.  I just don’t see anyone over the age of six enjoying this film, unless you have some sort of bizarre fetish and love for guinea pigs.  Other than the film itself being a complete disaster on all levels, the video and audio are pretty decent.  Especially the video presentation.  Talking rodents who are spies.  What’ll they think of next?

Record junkies, fans and ravenous collectors, take note: used record stores are your best friends, especially if the vinyl on hand is extremely affordable. Sometimes these places make it difficult to not walk out of there without spending fist-fulls of cash, or spending your entire day sifting through record after record. However, chances are the search is entirely worth it if you find something worth looking for.

Just this week after hitting up one of my local Half Price Books I found this gem of a Richie Havens record, “Electric Havens,” which I have never seen before, nor new existed. Oddly enough, there were three copies and I picked the cleanest one the store had. Someone recently told me a good rule about country music is that ‘if you can twang it, you can sang it.’ I had to laugh at the notion, but when it comes to classic country music I couldn’t agree more with that sentiment.

Two of country’s most prominent icons, Ernest Tubb and Loretta Lynn, teamed up to unload “Mr. And Mrs. Used To Be” on the masses, a collection of songs about woe, heartache and joy between two people who could honesty love and/or hate each other with a smile upon their faces. However, these two respected crooners of country love keep it classy and conservative, as they trade line for line. Tubb’s authoritative vocal presence, coupled with Lynn’s Appalachian twang work well together in their duets, delivering the kind of country duet LP you’d expect to know and love. I have been laughing for the last ten minutes.  Cowdefender and I go way back.  Over a decade back.  We have seen in that span of time something like 3000 movies together.  Never once have I seen him walk out of a film.  And over the years we have seen some serious shit films.  So when he notified me that he walked out of a film, I immediately laughed out loud.  I mean I know this film would be awful, but I’m just so happy it was so bad to make Cowdefender walk out.  Well, here is his EPIC review.  Enjoy.

Hi Bryan Here….

Charlie Sheen and Lionsgate have made a deal to bring the ‘Anger Management’ to television with Sheen set to star.  ‘Anger Management’ is based on the 2003 Adam Sandler/Jack Nicholson comedy.  In Sheen’s deal, he will own a considerable stake in the show.  The show will follow a “mild-mannered, non-confrontational man who is ordered to attend group anger management sessions led by a therapist who could probably use some anger management himself.”

Classic Waxxx: Muddy Waters “Unk” In Funk

by NapkinArt on Jun 17th, 2011

It’s been long disputed who is the actually ‘King of the Blues’, even more so when it comes to Chicago Blues. I like the blues no matter where it comes from, rich or poor, black or white, but no matter  who ends up taking the crown Muddy Waters will always hold one of the top spots in my record collection.

There’s been some major staples in Muddy Waters’ catalog over the decades, like “Electric Mud” and “Folk Singer”, but this lesser-known jewel called “Unk” In Funk is another classic that deserves proper recognition.

Giving Mad Props To Jack White and Co.

by NapkinArt on Oct 19th, 2010

For those who haven’t been paying attention to the genius of Third Man Record’s Jack White since his band, The White Stripes, became a house-hold name, that must be a pretty big rock you are living under…

Excuse me, perhaps I should introduce myself first, before standing on my soap box for a few minutes. My name is Jonathon Kimbrell: artist, writer, culinary engineer and avid music appreciator. I’ll be your contributing writer/critic on music and such for Boomstick Comics for the duration of this flight.

Ok, getting back to the electioneering. I’ve been a fan of Jack White, his music, and essentially everything he touches for the last 10 years. I wish I could say my fandom has lasted a lot longer, but I first discovered the genius of Jack White and his music in 2000, while a freshman in college, a very impressionable time in my life, I must add. Ever since, I’ve been following his career and the innovations he and his crew at Third Man Records in Nashville, TN have been cooking up.

The White Stripes are a powerhouse of sound, especially for just two people. The Raconteurs are The White Stripes+, will a full on band and sound. Enter The Dead Weather, the new avant garde of dark rock and raw sexual emotion that is White and lead vocalist Alison Mosshart. Only the sexual stage chemistry of Jagger and Richards can rival this duo. If  I could have ever asked for the second coming of The Velvet Underground, it would be The Dead Weather. Are you still under that rock? Just go pick up any record Jack White is playing on and you’ll see the light. Might I suggest “Horehound” for starters?

In an odd an interesting age where vinyl is regaining its throne, no one would have ever suspected new frontiers could be found in the vinyl format, and its Jack White that is pioneering these frontiers. The Dead Weather’s “Sea of Cowards” vinyl is the first time I’ve ever heard of music being pressed into the actual label of the record. White’s new ‘Triple Decker Record’ is a 12″ single of “Blue Blood Blues” with an additional 7″ single embedded inside. Simply separate the casing of the 12″ record and voila, you have a second record to enjoy. (I will admit this brilliant invention is harder than hell to get your hands on, as there were only 300 copies made world-wide.) SXSW fans of Jack and Co. were also treated to ‘Texas-Sized’ vinyl this year, making available 8″ singles and 13″ full-length LPs, sighting that ‘things are bigger in Texas.’ This is entirely true, but then again, Jack likes his exclusive goodies just to fuck with us. However, his genius keeps us coming back for more, as we ponder what new invention he’ll come up with next.

Aside from his inventiveness, here is why I like Jack White: he’s saving rock and roll one vinyl record at a time. I also happen to think he is music’s hardest working man in showbiz, rightfully taking that honor from the late ‘Godfather of Soul’, James Brown, as White wears many hats. Not only does he play in like 5,000,000 bands or so, he also dons the role of producer, steering the ship of all the new talent that comes through his Third Man Records studio. Jack White is making the music industry exciting again, in a time where major labels are still pouring shitty music down our throats on a minute-by-minute basis, and where none of them are interested in seeking out and nurturing good talent anymore. Of course, everyone still has their distributor middle-man, but perhaps White is finding ways to deliver the goods straight to the consumer, whenever the hell he feels like it. What happened to the days when an artist could release 2-3 records within a calendar year? Perhaps Jack White knows what the people want, and he’s giving it to us.

I had the fortune to join White’s Third Man Records ‘Vault’ fan club service, for a monthly fee fans get access to exclusive goodies, like rare recordings, vinyl records, videos and other swell stuff that can be possibly hocked on eBay. As I await the next batch of exclusive goodies from The Vault, I’ll be enjoying the records I’ve been able to acquire from Third Man Records thus far. Look for my review of the live ‘Racontwoers’ vinyl that was released for Record Store Day 2010. Yeah, I’m a little late on that one, but hey…sometimes records don’t find you until the time is right.

Keep on keepin’ on, Jack. If music truly does need saving, I’ll bet the farm on you good sir.

To check out what Jack White and the gang are up to, visit Third Man Records online or in person.

A War is Brewing in the Film Industry

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 26th, 2010

We go to the movie theater for the same reason we go to a ball game. It’s not just to see the main event. We do it to smell the smells, devour greasy food, relax with friends and family, escape the everyday, and experience camaraderie with perfect strangers. The laughter, fear, anger, sadness, and joy expressed by the collective magically heighten the experience of the individual.

But something wicked this way comes.

Movie studios want to reduce the time that movies will be shown in

theaters. Instead, they want to be able to provide video-on-demand

service so you can watch new movies from the comfort of your home just

five weeks after theater release. It will only cost you $24.99 per

movie. Also the FCC (which I think should NOT exist) are going to

allow movie studios to activate technology to prevent films sold

through video-on-demand systems from being copied.

This is outrageous. First, if you implement software technology to

prevent movies from being copied, within a couple of weeks, people

will develop ways to get around your technology. You will never be

able to completely prevent pirating. EVER. Don’t fight it, find a way

to work with it. The home video industry still makes tons of money

even while pirated copies are being made.

Movie studios are justifying the quick release of movies on-demand

because the numbers show that 90% of a movie’s gross revenue is made

within the first 30 days of release. These numbers, however, fail to

factor in DVD sales. Last year, home video sales revenue equaled about

10 billion dollars. Early on-demand release will actually reduce DVD

sales. DVD retailers like Best Buy, Target, and Wal-Mart are well

aware of this risk. In an effort to protect their economic interests,

they have threatened litigation against the movie studios.

Since there is a market for physical copies of DVDs and blurays, I

don’t think they should change the model.  A physical copy of anything

is much, much better than a movie streaming online (although

admittedly I am biased since I am a professional collector). But most

importantly, I don’t want to see the death of the movie theater. It is

an important part of our culture – an experience that we should

preserve.

Brooke Barnes from the New York Times wrote this article about the upcoming movie industry war.

SOMETIME in the next few months, there is likely to be an explosion in the movie business. The question is which studio will detonate the bomb.

Tension between studios and theater owners has been simmeringa long time, but it intensified in May, when the Federal Communications Commission issued what appeared on the surface to be an arcane ruling. After two years of prodding from Hollywood, the F.C.C. agreed to let movie studios activate technology to prevent films sold through video-on-demand systems from being copied.

Ho-hum? Hardly. The ruling gave studios the ability to pursue a new business — so-called premium V.O.D. — that may be the industry’s best hope of restoring itself to health, now that the bottom has fallen out of the DVD market.

Right now, theaters get an exclusive period — 120 days, on average — to serve up new movies. Then the releases appear on television video-on-demand services at a price of about $4.99. Armed with the new copy-blocking technology, studios want to offer new movies on video-on-demand services about 45 days after they arrive in theaters, for a premium price of $24.99.

The business opportunity is multifold. With as much as 80 percent of that early V.O.D. revenue going to the studio, movie executives see a new engine to compensate for the sputtering DVD. And for the studios, the need is urgent: DVD sales for the year are expected to total about $9.9 billion, down 30 percent from their peak in 2004, according to Adams Media Research.

Studios also want to cut marketing costs by interweaving advertising for theatrical, DVD and video-on-demand releases; reducing the exclusive “window” given to theaters would make it easier to combine those campaigns. Premium V.O.D. would also bring greater consumer awareness to regular video on demand, which has not caught on as much as other rental options like Netflix, according to a research report by Anthony DiClemente, an analyst at Barclays Capital.

Last but not least, studios are aware that consumers are growing impatient about being unable to access all movies whenever and wherever they want. Layering in an early video-on-demand option might prevent some of those frustrated customers from turning to pirated copies.

“There are people who we believe would like to see movies sooner than later and would pay a premium price to do that,” Robert A. Iger, the chief executive of the Walt Disney Company, told analysts on a conference call last month. “We are going to become aggressive.”

Cable and satellite television providers like Time Warner Cable (which is no longer connected to Warner Brothers) and DirecTV are ready to push the button on premium V.O.D. as soon as they reach a deal with studios. After all, the service would represent another revenue stream for these providers and another way to differentiate themselves with customers. The promise of the new business is one reason that Comcast is so eager for government regulators to clear its deal to take control of NBC Universal, analysts say.

SO what’s the problem? DVD retailers, for a start. The likes of Best Buy and Wal-Mart“have told studios they will retaliate against anyone who tries early-release V.O.D. because of the threat it poses to DVD sales,” Richard Greenfield, an analyst at the financial services company BTIG, wrote in a research note last Monday.

But the real wrath will come from theater owners, who have made it clear that releasing a movie early on video-on-demand services — thus cutting into their window — would be the equivalent of declaring war. Over the summer, the National Association of Theater Owners took out full-page ads in Variety and The Hollywood Reporter making its opposition clear.

The worry for theaters, of course, is that people will be more reluctant to buy movie tickets, at an average cost of almost $8, if they know they can catch the same film just a few weeks later in their living rooms, and for less money than it costs to haul the whole family to the multiplex. Considering that the average moviegoer spends more than $3 on popcorn and soda and the like, the cost of Friday night at the movies for a family of four can easily reach $45 — or much more in cities like New York — even before premium-priced 3-D screenings or possible parking fees are factored in.

“While exhibitors understand the new pressures that a weakened DVD market creates for their studio partners,” the ads read in part, “four decades of box-office growth and three straight years of record-breaking box office argue for caution in tampering with a business model that clearly works.”

The Big Three theater chains — Regal Entertainment, AMC Entertainment and Cinemark — declined to comment, but smaller theater companies have been more vocal.

“Be careful before you cook us all, yourselves included,” wrote Gregory S. Marcus, the chief executive of the Marcus Corporation — the parent of Marcus Theatres, a Midwest exhibitor — in a July opinion article in The Hollywood Reporter.

Exhibitors are also arguing that the copy-blocking technology approved by the F.C.C. won’t work. “If past is prologue, technological locks will be overcome with technological crowbars,” the ads from the National Association of Theater Owners stated.

Adding to this argument was news last week that hackers were able to crack Intel technology used to securely transmit high-definition content between televisions and set-top boxes. (Intel played down the threat, saying that a special device would need to be built to exploit the information.)

Theater owners mean business. When Sony Pictures Entertainment tried a test with“Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” last year — owners of Internet-connected Bravia televisions could rent that movie before it was available on DVD, for $25 for a month — some theaters yanked the film.

In a similar showdown, Disney’s decision last spring to release “Alice in Wonderland” early on DVD was greeted by boycott calls from theater owners, most forcefully in Britain.

Studio executives say they are going to risk premium V.O.D. anyway, contending that they have little choice, given the DVD downturn. Besides, analysts estimate that 90 percent of a film’s admissions revenue is now generated within 30 days of its release.

(The rebuttal from theater owners is that the data doesn’t take into account second-run and discount theaters, and that there are big exceptions: “Inception,” for instance, was still raking in millions in theaters 10 weeks after its release.)

Protecting the box office is crucial for studios, and for reasons beyond the importance of their ticket-revenue share. For a start, under long-term contracts, premium television networks like HBO and Showtime typically pay for movies using formulas based on domestic box-office revenue. So shrinking ticket sales would also mean shrinking television revenue.

Studios also rely on big theatrical runs to catapult titles into the public consciousness. Without all of the hoopla surrounding a hit at the multiplex — the lines, the marquees, the buzz in the corridors afterward — movies start to feel an awful lot like their more commodified cousin, television.

SO which studio is going to go first, and when? All six of the major studios declined to comment for this article. But multiple movie executives with deep knowledge of the landscape say the first quarter of next year is the target, in part because big Christmas releases like “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” and “Tron: Legacy” give studios extra leverage.

The studios that seem most likely to make a move are Disney, 20th Century Fox and Warner Brothers. In part because its size gives it more muscle than other studios, Warner has historically shown a willingness to rewrite the blueprints for the home entertainment business. It was Warner, for instance, that aggressively pushed to release movies on traditional V.O.D. at the same time the DVDs arrived in stores.

One thing is certain, said a top motion picture agent who requested anonymity so as not to anger his contacts in the industry: “Studios have made it clear they are not interested in testing the waters on premium V.O.D. Once they start, they’re going to do it.”

What do you think?

Gearing up for the Tron sequel?  I know I am.  Disney is going to rev up Tron in a very big way in their Theme Parks.  We are talking rides, food, arcades, a dance club, live entertainers, and much much more.  Disney says it is going to be ELECTRIFYING.

Disney had to say this about it.

“It’s an “electrifying” experience for the entire family, filled with music, lights and some of your favorite food and beverage, all set amidst the captivating world of “TRON: Legacy!” From a dazzling dance club under the stars to an authentic recreation of Flynn’s Arcade to some radical gaming, it’s like nowhere else on the grid! Each night, we’ll feature live entertainers, complete with lasers, glow accessories and the hottest music ever to rock the grid. ElecTRONica is “the” place to dance the night away in a fantastic world that only Disney can create. Highlights for the entire family will definitely be Flynn’s Video Arcade, face painting and the TRON: Evolution video game area.  TRON fans and families can also enjoy the party seven days a week during Thanksgiving week and Christmas week.”

This sounds quite awesome and maybe worth a trip.

Here is some concept art for the park.
