Carell Has Conviction!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 3rd, 2011

After two years in the “To Do” inbox, Conviction is being made. Not the Hilary Swank trial flick, but a heist movie in the vein of Ocean’s Eleven and 48 Hours. Steve Carell, star of so many funny hits, is dug in deep.

Hi Bryan Here…

Nintendo has released some of their best 8-Bit Games to be played online without downloading them.  Wow.  The days are going to fly by now.  I love playing these 8-bit games.  In a lot of ways, they still are better than any of the newer games that come out today.

Geek the Deal of the Day: 24 The Complete Series!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 14th, 2010

Hi Bryan Here…

Today’s Geek Deal has everything to do with Fox’s amazing thriller tv show, “24”.  Get eight days worth of Jack Bauer kicking some terrorist ass.  I really liked this show.  I remember I starting watching this show LIVE on its third season.  Before the third season started I went out and got the first two seasons and pretty much stayed up with Cowdefender for 48 hours watching both seasons.  It hooks you from the get go and does not let up at all.

I Am Mother – Film Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 9th, 2019

“I Am Mother is one sci-fi film that gets it right.”

As we’ve seen before, robots with artificial intelligence will either help us succeed into the future with a peaceful existence or completely obliterate the world population for their global takeover. With the new Netflix original movie I Am Mother, it’s not so black and white as that. There is a big gray area as newcomer directory Grant Sputore graciously tells the story about a human/robot relationship. This aptly paced thriller has some wonderful original ideas that are implemented with twist and turns throughout that never sells itself short on passionate participation. This is one sci-fi film that gets it right.

Always Be My Maybe – Film Review

by Gumbercules9000 on May 29th, 2019

“Always Be My Maybe is simply enjoyable and engaging throughout.”

Next on the romantic-comedy chopping block comes Always Be My Maybe, which is exclusively on Netflix and has all of the desired genre tropes added in to give you laughs and heartwarming feelings. That being said, you’ve seen this story literally 500 billion times before. There is nothing new or original here in these characters or plot points. It’s romantic-comedy business as usual with Always Be My Maybe, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. While it doesn’t do anything to change the game or provoke thought, it’s simply enjoyable and engaging throughout, and that should be enough for a couple of hours.

Avengers: Endgame – Film Review #2!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 23rd, 2019

“Avengers: Endgame is a nearly flawless closing chapter to this universe that started with Iron Man.”

Avengers: Endgame is a nearly flawless closing chapter to this universe that started with Iron Man in 2008. Every movie leading up to Endgame is represented here is a way that honors (while flexing) everything that Disney/Marvel has achieved in the last 11 years. For a movie this dense and long to be executed at such a high level is a testament to the common knowledge that Marvel has created with its characters over the last 11 years. For a movie to have nearly 50 characters appear yet still feel grounded and focused on the original six Avengers we met between 2008-2012 was astonishing.

Lucio Fulci’s ‘ZOMBI’ Blu-ray Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 12th, 2018

Right after George Romero made his opus ‘Dawn of the Dead’ in 1978, the Italians wanted to make a sequel to it. Since Dario Argento (an Italian filmmaker) edited the original ‘Dawn of the Dead‘, they took the liberty to make a sequel with first time director Lucio Fulci and call it ‘Zombi‘ or ‘Zombi 2‘ depending on what part of the world you’re in. The result was nothing short of spectacular and has become one of the most beloved zombie movies ever made. The atmosphere, practical makeup effects, and story are incredible.

Fantastic Fest is one of the events that is pure bliss for any fan of genre cinema. If you love horror, sci-fi, foreign, action, and even adult-oriented movies from the 1970s, then Fantastic Fest is the place to let that freak flag fly high and be with like-minded individuals that truly appreciate the art of movies. All of the madness and fun will take place in Austin, TX starting on September 20th and run for 10 days at the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar St. This year, which is the 14th annual festival of Fantastic-ness, captures the essence of the Korean movie scene with a ton of cool films being showcased from Korea, both new and old. This is something you won’t want to miss.

The first wave of movies has been announced, including the World Premiere of the WWII horror movie called ‘OVERLORD‘ from J.J. Abrams. In addition to that film, Fantastic Fest will host Gareth Evans‘ horror movie ‘APOSTLE‘. Gareth gave us the amazing films ‘THE RAID‘ AND ‘THE RAID 2‘, so you can expect some insane fight scenes and horrific imagery. Alos, a film called ‘THE NIGHT COMES FOR US‘, which stars the badass from those ‘RAID‘ movies will be shown, meaning Iko Uwais will stun us once again with his amazing physical skills. If you were a fan of ‘THE GREASY STRANGLER‘, the director of that movie Jim Hosking has a new film called ‘AN EVENING WITH BEVERLY LUFF LINN‘, which is being described as a David Lynch meets John Waters type of movie. You had me at Greasy Strangler.

Lastly, there are some vintage films coming through from AGFA (American Genre Film Archive), one of which has peaked my interest from the title alone – ‘MARY JANE’S NOT A VIRGIN ANYMORE‘. I have high hopes for this one. Below is the list of films with cast and crew info, along with a brief synopsis. Enjoy and hope to see you all there.

Best Movies of the First Half of 2018!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 28th, 2018

I’ve had the chance to see a ton of movies this year but still feel like I have missed out on some indie ones that are necessary to catch before December. Below is my list so far. I was really shocked with what a good year it has been for horror and movies staying with me in general. It is pretty rare that I think about a movie days after seeing it but this year there have been so many.

Dan Moran’s ‘Ready Player One’ Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 29th, 2018

Ready Player One” or “I, Spy: The Movie” is a delivery vehicle for people who need validation through nostalgia. The problem is that despite how hard it tries to milk enjoyment out of its constant nods to pop culture, it fails to say anything that’s worth remembering.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Molly’s Game’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 28th, 2018

THE FILM

(This film portion was written by Beka Perlstein)

Do you have a girl crush on Jessica Chastain? Do you have a man crush on Idris Elba? If you have any combination of the two, Molly’s Game is going to make you have all the feels. This is a well done film with all the right players and script that packs a punch. Aaron Sorkin (screenplay and first time director) has taken the novel Molly’s Game and turned it into a film that at a run time of two hours and twenty minutes seems fast paced and doesn’t waste your time. While I know literally nothing about poker, this movie kept me entertained and engaged because the story wasn’t the game-it was the players.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 25th, 2018

THE FILM

There is always hope for a new ‘Star Wars‘ movie. Two years ago with ‘The Force Awakens‘, Disneyand JJ Abrams reinvigorated the franchise into becoming the #1 movie of all time. Not only was it financially successful, but it brought a new love to the film series, since the prequels almost destroyed all that ‘Star Wars‘ had built up since 1977. It was a new day in the ‘Star Wars‘ universe with new characters crossing paths with our favorite original characters, which made our collective nerdy hearts soar with happiness and nostalgia.
