‘JoJo Rabbit’ – Film Review! (Fantastic Fest)

I expected this movie about a young boy named Jojo growing up during the fall of Nazi Germany to be Taika Waititi’s take on a classic Mel Brooks set up. It turns out Taika has not seen ‘The Producers‘ or any of the other Hilter satires that commonly spring to mind when you hear about the initial concept of this film. While often hilarious, ‘Jojo Rabbit‘ takes a different, more earnest direction.

Underwater – Film Review #2!

January is a notorious dumping ground for studios to release their movies they don’t have a ton of confidence in. When I first saw the release date for Underwater I assumed it would be a really poor horror movie they needed to get off the books. Then the ad blitz hit and the marketing really ramped up so I assumed that maybe they had something slightly above average on their hands. Folks, they don’t. Underwater is a predictable, tame, and boring aquatic monster movie that goes through the motions until it mercifully ends.

All of the madness and fun will take place in Austin, TX starting on September 19 and run for 10 days at the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar St. This year, which is the 15th annual festival of Fantastic-ness, captures the essence of the Mexican movie scene with a ton of cool films being showcased from Mexico, both new and old.
