Film Review: ‘Blue Ruin’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 7th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

13870-2

I had no idea what to expect from ‘Blue Ruin‘, other than it played well at previous film festivals over the past year. I’m here to tell you that this very dark mix of comedy and violence is one of the better films to come out this year. Director/writer Jeremy Saulnier has concocted a brilliant and suspenseful script and never makes us choose to like out main character Dwight (brilliantly played by Macon Blair). This is Saulnier’s second feature film he’s directed and is what most directors would hope to accomplish with there sophomoric effort. ‘Blue Ruin‘ is a southern style revenge tale that will make a lasting impression for years to come and will make you think twice about exacting revenge on someone.

Fantastic Fest Film Review: ‘Hold the Dark’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 24th, 2018

Jeremy Saulnier has now made three movies about the darkness at the fringes of civilization. In Blue Ruin it was a revenge tale where a man rejected societal expectations to get his pound of flesh. In Green Room, we follow the journey of a punk rock band trapped by neo-Nazis in a woods far from help. In Hold the Dark, he explores the darkness of remote Alaska to make one of the bleakest movies in recent memory.

Favorite Films of 2016!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 30th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

blake-lively-and-the-shark-the-shallows-39717776-1000-544

The end of 2016 is here, which means everyone’s Top 10 list is out already or getting ready to be released. I’m not going to do a Top 10 in order again this year, because there are just so many amazing films I feel so passionate about, that it is difficult to rank them. If you think this is a weak year of films, then you are surely mistaken. I will say that most of the big budget blockbusters this year were duds, but the indie films were nothing short of amazing. So below is the list of films that I truly loved this year. These films will be ones that I watch over and over again, and you should to. I watched 254 films that were released this year (Yes, I counted) and survived to tell the tale. As always, please let me know if any of your favorite films made my list. Enjoy!

You can CLICK the titles of each movie where you can purchase the Blu-rays too. Hooray!

‘Green Room’ Blu-ray Announced and Detailed!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 3rd, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

91LSukBM25L._SL1500_

Green Room‘ was my favorite film from 2015’s ‘Fantastic Fest‘. You don’t get much better than Patrick Stewart as a bad neo-nazi, trying to kill a punk rock band. Not only that, you have the ‘Blue Ruin‘ guys Jeremy Saulnier and Macon Blair on top of this film as well. It’s in theaters now, and I highly recommend you go and see it. Lionsgate has just announced the Blu-ray too, which will release on July 12th with some cool extras. Below is the information.

Film Review: ‘Green Room’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 30th, 2015

Jay S., Here…

green-room-movie

As a hobby musician, I’ve played a few sketchy venues.  I’ve had occasions where I had to worry about whether or not I would be paid, and I’ve even had a couple of times where my physical safety held the forefront of my thoughts.  In his latest triumph, “Green Room,” writer-director Jeremy Saulnier (‘Blue Ruin‘) takes ahold of those themes and runs screaming into the woods, dodging bullets, machetes, and outpacing the foaming jowls of kill-hounds.  During the Q&A at Austin’s Fantastic Fest, Mr. Saulnier told the audience about, as a teen, attending Punk-Rock shows and being perplexed and off-put at having to share the event with skinheads and neo-Nazis.  This experience he credited as being the seed that eventually led to the screenplay for his thrilling movie, “Green Room.”

Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Monkey’s Paw’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 1st, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

Monkeys-paw

THE FILM

The Monkey’s Paw‘ is a tale old as time. Back in 1902, author W.W. Jacobs wrote a short story about a family receiving a dried up monkey’s paw where it supposedly granted three wishes. Though each wish was granted, they caused dire consequences for those who used the monkey’s paw. Since 1902, there have been many interpretations and adaptations on Jacobs’s story. Whether it be films, musicals, operas, or even the famous ‘Simpsons‘ episode ‘Treehouse of Horror II‘, this story has been heard or seen by everyone at some point in time.

4K UHD Review: ‘Jigsaw’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 16th, 2018

THE FILM

Wait, what? He’s back? He’s really back with his infamous contraptions that kill people? Of course he’s back, even after a seven year hiatus, which was the last time we watched the Saw franchise on the big screen. Jigsaw marks the 8th film in the series since 2004 and with an eight film combined budget of $77 million, the box office gross of all eight films is a hair-line under $1 billion. So if you think there will be more Saw films with more Tobin Bell, the answer is a hard “yes”. The Spierig Bros. (Undead, Predestination, Daybreakers) are in the director chairs this time around as they put Jigsaw/John Cramer (Bell) in the center of the story.

4K UHD Review: Wonder Woman!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 19th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

THE FILM

The Warner Bros./DC Comics Cinematic Universe has been trying to get off its feet for a while now with no success, besides some decent box office money. However, most people would tell you that the new DC Comics‘ films are just not up to par with their rivals over at Marvel for many reasons. These people would be right. Perhaps one of the best moments of Batman v Superman was in fact Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. It was just a shame she only had a few minutes of screen time in that film. The rest was mostly trash. Luckily, Warner Bros. and DC Comics decided to finally make a Wonder Woman movie, which is the first superhero film to feature a female superhero as its main protagonist, as well with a female director with Patty Jenkins. The result is satisfying, making Wonder Woman a damn good film with a few flaws.

Blu-ray Review: T2 Trainspotting!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 20th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

91oF-dl3OxL._SL1500_

THE FILM

We all got glassed twenty years ago with Danny Boyle’sTrainspotting‘ movie, and we stuck around for two decades to find out which cunts would come back. Luckily, everyone came back for ‘T2 Trainspotting‘, because this sequel is highly entertaining and has some heart beneath all of the scams, drugs, and violence. Some 20 years later, Renton (Ewan McGregor) is back in Edinburgh after hiding out in Amsterdam from the events of the first film. He runs into Spud (Ewen Bremner) who is still addicted to heroine and is not in a good place. The two eventually meet up with Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), who now owns a run-down pub.

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

Summer time means a million things to different people, but some things we can all agree on. Cook outs, swimming, catching lightning bugs, camping and baseball. It’s just as pure as mom’s apple pie and the star spangled banner and every spring, a new season swings into action and a new hope is born for your team to be a contender and play through October. The national past time has been the basis for a lot of movies and I’m making some sense of them all with my Top 10 favorite baseball movies.

Film Review: ‘Poltergeist 2015’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 22nd, 2015

Janet W., Here…

Poltergeist-2015-trailer-image-3

Horror, according to Webster: Something that causes feelings of fear, dread, and shock.

Someone should have enlightened the production team of this definition prior to their exploring the “re-imaging” (not remake) of this staple of the horror film genre.  I would not expect real horror in this film.  You will get a Scary Movie version of cheesy horror.  Everything in the 2015 version of Poltergeist is topsy-turvy from its 1982 predecessor.  The Freelings (1982) give way to the Bowens (2015).  Fear, suspense, and horror give way to one-liners and gratuitous special effects.

‘My Little Pony’ Transitions To The Big Screen!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Oct 20th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

mylittlepony_splash_2048x1536_en

If there’s one thing I love more than ‘The Blues Brothers‘, ‘Doctor Who‘, bacon cheeseburgers and all things Disney, it’s ‘My Little Pony‘. I’m the mom that waits for my kids to go to school, so I can turn on MLP reruns and just kvell in the happiness and saccharine-sweet images of perky, cutesy ponies with equally adorable designs on their butts. If my butt had something that great on it, I’d show it off, too. For the benefit of those that see me, this is not the case. You’re welcome.

Hey there, little rock n’ roll devils, Napkin Art here…

Alright, so I realize I’m a few days behind on talking about the Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds show from March 14th, but hell, I’m still reeling from how awesome the experience was. Needed a few extra days to process it all.

As anticipated, Australia’s dark and lovely darlings, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, hit up SMU’s McFarlin Auditorium in support of their 15th album release, Push The Sky Away, with guns, fists and instruments blazing, like it was a real gunfight at the OK Coral. No eardrum or blackened soul was spared during the two hour set. Read the rest of this entry »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 16th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…..

91t42AGU92L._AA1500_

Christopher Nolan’s third and final installment of his Batman franchise ranks as the best film in the series.  That’s difficult for me to say, as the first two films were so amazing.  Even with Heath Ledger’s iconic and eternal role as the Joker in the previous film, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ far surpasses anything my imagination could have hoped for in film.  Movies do not get better than ’The Dark Knight Rises’.

BRIDGE – CHAPTER FOUR

by Justin Cline on Nov 16th, 2011

CHAPTER FOUR

Bridge was faced with a decision, a choice between two evils, neither of which was in his favor.  Should he stretch his light out to reveal what had become of his would-be client or draw the candle closer to inspect the ruins of his own gut?  In the end, the woman won out if only because he was still in a state of shock, and he knew he needed to take advantage of that fact before it wore off and the pain of what had happened to him set in. I never really thought much about joining music fan clubs the many years I’ve been collecting music, but I recently joined Jack White’s “Third Man Records Vault” fan club service a few months back, perhaps out of sheer jealously about the rare goodies I was missing out on. Thankfully, I wised up in plenty of time to be introduced to The Greenhornes.

The latest Vault subscription service package included some really sweet goodies, as have been the case since The Vault service launched a couple of years ago. Included is the 12″ gem from The Greenhornes, called “Boscobel Blues”, a collection of ‘proper demos for what would later become the “East Grand Blues” EP’ released in 2005.
