Film Review: ‘Black Mass’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 16th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 8.01.58 PM

It’s okay to look at ‘Black Mass‘ as a distant sequel to the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ movies. Both have bad guys, wars, guns, monsters, and Johnny Depp. Maybe I’m reaching a bit there, but it’s still fun to think about them as distant cousins in movies. The story of James ‘Whitey’ Bulger has been told a lot, especially recently. If you’re unfamiliar with who Bulger is, he was one of the most vicious and heinous human beings to ever walk the planet. He was even the FBI’s Most Wanted man for more than a decade, as he spent most of his time in Boston as a mafia boss who committed murder amongst other things.

Black Mass‘. I’ve been waiting for this movie for a long time, I love mafia storylines. Give me ‘The Sopranos‘, ‘Goodfellas‘, ‘The Departed‘ and ‘The Godfather trilogy’, books, documentaries, whatever it is, I dive in head-first. Bonus points if the stories are true, as in the case of Whitey Bulger.

Texas-Chainsaw-2-Blu-ray

THE FILM

The original ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre‘ is one of the best horror films of all time. It still holds that title to this day. One thing most people don’t realize though is that the original film was made in such a way to evoke terror and horror, that it was filmed in such a manner as to show almost not gore, blood, or violence. It was all left off-screen for the most part. In return, this was a low-budget independent horror film that was fast-paced, horrific, and wildly entertaining, if not scary-as-hell. It truly is one of the perfect horror movies. some twelve years later, the original director Tobe Hooper came back and directed a sequel titled ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre II‘.

Netflix has taken their business model of introducing original programming to their subscribed masses seriously. In 2013 the streaming network introduced ‘Orange Is The New Black‘ to a very receptive audience and it wasn’t long before they brought a second season to play. Before the third season is even available, the network has announced that it has renewed the lady-led prison story for a fourth season.

Film Review: ‘White Boy Rick’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 14th, 2018

White Boy Rick is a mediocre biopic about the insane Wershe family story. When I say insane, I mean completely insane. When crack was on the rise in the 1980s, Rick Wershe was a police informant, drug dealer, and kingpin for a solid amount of time with the help of his Dad. This story had so many twists and turns related to the rise and fall of this family that a good hour on the ‘Ol Google Machine’ after the movie really left me shocked with how much of it was true. Despite my fascination with the subject matter the movie didn’t land as well as I thought it would. I’d compare it to Black Mass which is another truly incredible real life story that couldn’t figure out how to present it as a compelling movie.

Black Mass‘ is going to be an excellent send-off for the summer movie season when it’s released next year on September 18, 2015. There is some major star-power in this flick. Every fangirl in the world is going to be in line for this one as it pairs up none other than the ‘captain of summer-movie revenue’ himself, Johnny Depp with the newer, but no-less glorious to the fangirl scene, Benedict CumberbatchJoining Depp and Cumberbatch are Jesse Plemons (‘Breaking Bad‘), Dakota Johnson (‘Fifty Shades of Grey‘) and Juno Temple (‘Maleficent‘, ‘Horns‘). The film is based on the book ‘Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob‘ written by Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill

‘King Cohen’ Blu-ray Review!

Larry Cohen is one of those old-school filmmakers that has been around a long time and is universally loved in the business. Cohen is mostly known for his B-movie films and having a penchant for not taking “no” for an answer. His filmmaking methods are pioneering and risky, but all have been a big success in their own way. Over the past few decades, Choen has amassed a ton of great friendships with other filmmakers, who all talk about Cohen her in this documentary called ‘King Cohen‘.

Film Review: ‘Avengers: Infinity War’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 25th, 2018

For the last decade, we’ve been getting to know most of the Marvel super-heroes. In 2008, we met Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) when the comic book company Marvel decided to start making their own films with their own company, without the help of any other big studio. It was a massive success, which led to 17 more films that included a ton of more superheroes, including Thor, Hulk, Ant-Man, Captain America, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and Guardians of the Galaxy. For the first few superhero films, we were introduced to their origins and character, which led to the first Avengers films. Needless to say, that first Avengers movie broke box office records at the time and put in motion a story arc that culminates into what we have today – ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 2nd, 2018

THE FILM

The threats of terrorism, war, chaos, and financial ruin are all too real these days.  ’The Dark Knight Rises’ dives into these issues on a massive scale, which makes any film in the Marvel universe look like mere “child’s play” (no reference to a knife-wielding murderous doll).  Compared with the other Batman movies, everything is bigger in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and there is so much more at stake.  Not one second of this film is wasted, the writing and direction is straight to the point, cohesive, and comes across as totally fulfilling in its 164 minute run-time.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Dark Knight’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 2nd, 2018

THE FILM

The Dark Knight‘ is one of those rare instances where the sequel is even better that it’s previous original movie. I would say that this film is perhaps one of the greatest, if not the greatest superhero film of all time so far. In addition to that, it’s just a fantastic film itself that can compete with any movie out there. This sequel picks up with Batman in the prime of his justice restoring and bringing criminals to jail. Christian Bale is better than ever here as Batman and we see how him being the caped crusader is taking a toll both physically and mentally on him. He still manages to come through though each time. But soon enough, comes The Joker, played flawlessly by Heath Ledger.

4K UHD Review: Wonder Woman!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 19th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

THE FILM

The Warner Bros./DC Comics Cinematic Universe has been trying to get off its feet for a while now with no success, besides some decent box office money. However, most people would tell you that the new DC Comics‘ films are just not up to par with their rivals over at Marvel for many reasons. These people would be right. Perhaps one of the best moments of Batman v Superman was in fact Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. It was just a shame she only had a few minutes of screen time in that film. The rest was mostly trash. Luckily, Warner Bros. and DC Comics decided to finally make a Wonder Woman movie, which is the first superhero film to feature a female superhero as its main protagonist, as well with a female director with Patty Jenkins. The result is satisfying, making Wonder Woman a damn good film with a few flaws.

Film Review: mother!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 13th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

It’s been proven over the last two decades that filmmaker Darren Aronofsky makes movies his own way. He doesn’t bow down to Hollywood execs and never makes movies for the masses. Most people would fail with this tactic, but with Aronofsky, he wins awards and is met with critical acclaim. With films like Pi, Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, and The Wrestler (I won’t mention Noah) – you can tell that Aronofsky doesn’t make tightly wrapped, happy movies with pretty little bows on them. I commend him for this, because he’s doing something that nobody else is doing.

Film Review: ‘Blair Witch’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 14th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

neon_0001_large

Seventeen years later, we have journeyed back into the Black Woods in Burkittsville, Maryland to seek out the Blair Witch. Back in 1999, one of the first examples of viral marketing came splashing on the scene with ‘The Blair Witch Project‘, where we saw trailers of faux police interviews and news reports that three college kids went missing in the woods and the footage that was found was real. Filmed all with a handheld camera in first person back in 1999, this film was one of the first movies to deal with the “found footage” aspect and it worked to great effect as everyone thought the film and people in it were real. It was highly effective and scary-as-hell and became a cult-phenomenon and paved the way for tons of “found footage” movies.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

shane-jump

As I’m recovering from seven insane days of ‘Wrestlemania 32‘ in Dallas, TX., I’ve had time to reflect, contemplate, saturate, and regurgitate every I event I attended. I had my box of Booty O’s to make sure I wasn’t Booty thru the weekend, met some good people, watched some amazing matches, talked with some WWE Superstars, and lost my voice when Shane-O-Mac put his life on the line for the WWE Business. To quote a certain former WWE announcer, it was a slobberknocker of a week for sure that hit me in the solar plexus more times than I’d like to admit. WWE really did it up big this year for Wrestlemania 32. Not only did they put on several good shows, but they also broke records. There was over 101,000 people in attendance at AT&T Stadium for Wrestlemania 32, beating the previous record from Wrestlemania 3 by quite a bit. Not only that, ticket sales and merch sales were way up as well from previous years. It seems like WWE is growing exponentially with more and more fans tuning in every week. That’s a good thing. Instead of writing a recap of the entire weekend, I’ll give you some details of some of the cooler things I witnessed over the past week.

It’s an unrelenting true horror film that never follows the usual horror genre tropes we have seen so often in recent years. You won’t get the usual cheap scares here. Instead, you can expect something more sinister and evil that preys on a family in the 17th Century of new England. After you watch this film that releases just a few days after Valentine’s Day, you won’t soon forget all the horrors you just witnessed on screen. Here is a new trailer for ‘The Witch‘. This can’t come soon enough. Enjoy what might be the best horror movie of the year.

Pan opens with the star-filled, vastness, and seemingly infinite space a proper setting for our imaginations.  This is where the world began.  Fitting this would be the start of the story of one of literature’s most courageous young boy (sometimes a grown woman, remember Mary Martin played him, too), Peter Pan.  Pan is where Peter’s story began, long before he met Wendy, John, and Michael.  Peter was a baby left on the front steps of Lambeth’s Home for Boys in pre-World War I London.

ladygrey

Ladygrey is a film adapted by Alain Choquart and Laurence Coriat based on two novels by Hubert Mingarelli. This film is about a small rural town (named Ladygrey) in South Africa, ten years after apartheid.   Despite a brutal history of race-related murders, of which bodies have never been found,  the community has progressed in autopilot, trying to ignore their past and disregard their resentment and anger.  This is the only way they have managed to co-exist. But now, a turn of events threatens to unmask their true feelings and tear-down the tenuous balance that has maintained peace.

Top 10 Soundtracks We Want To See Released on Vinyl!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 13th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

say-anything

Many of you might already know that I love listening to movie soundtracks. I always have. Since I was a little tyke who could barely see over a counter, I was infatuated with movie scores and soundtracks, particularly the ‘E.T.‘ original motion picture score and the ‘Beverly Hill Cop‘ soundtrack. From there, my love and passion grew for all types of music. My parents had a pretty good record collection that included all three original ‘Star Wars’ albums, ‘The Wizard of Oz‘, and ‘Star Trek I and II’ to just name a few. Throughout the years, I now have a fun record collection that spans all genres of music from Frank Zappa to Rage Against the Machine, from R.L. Burnside to The Pixies, and so on. Along the way, digging through the dirty stacks of crates at local record shops and estate sales, I became hell bent on having one of the best Soundtrack collections. And over the past several years, I’ve been lucky enough to acquire some very sought after albums. But there are still so many soundtracks that have never found their way to vinyl, either commercially or ever really. So here is a list in the hopes that maybe Varèse Sarabande, Mondo, or Death Waltz will consider releasing these albums in the near future.

WWE: RAW 3/9/15 Recap: Never Ever Trust a Viper

by Angelic Heel on Mar 13th, 2015

open

Angelic Heel once again…

The road to Wrestlemania never looked so bleak as it does now for all those loyal members of the WWE Universe that have proudly Bought In. Pittsburgh, PA was the scene of one of the most brutal unjustified beatings I have witnessed. RAW came to us live from the Steel City and was filled with its typical hard hitting action and more Intercontinental Championship shenanigans, but it was all darkened by the actions of one man, Randy Orton. Want to know what happened?

Good things always come to those who wait, and the last RAW of 2014 was a VERY good thing. WWE Hall of Famer, Edge, and his BFF the Charismatic Superstar, Christian, were the guest hosts to ring out the year for those with the benefit of flash photography.  The evening totally reeked of awesomeness as we saw champions fighting champions, championships on the line, long anticipated debuts and prayed for returns.  It was an historic night.  So let’s get this party started and see what the final RAW of the year had in store for the WWE Universe!

HBO knows how to keep customers satisfied, this was one of the first networks that chose not to rely solely on premium movies to entertain the masses by bringing unique series to the party. The cable channel puts together a clip with highlights from 2014 while adding small teasers for what is to come in 2015.

Janet’s Film Review of ‘Interstellar’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 5th, 2014

Janet W., Here…

interstellar_movie-wide

Periodically covering the land, homes, vehicles, indoor counters, and tables inside locked up homes are dust storms, more massive than those in Dune and The Mummy.  The viewer physically feels the force of the dust wall as the sound rocks their seats and chests.  The people cannot see or breathe.  The air has become 80% nitrogen and rising, slightly north of our current healthy air at 78% nitrogen.  Strange?  Yes.  A loud boom shakes the viewer, a drone flies barely above a truck, far below avoiding radar.  Odd?  Yes.  But signs of the end of the planet Earth?  The general public doesn’t know it, but I guess it is a lot like that frog sitting in a pot of water being brought slowly to a boil.  The frog will sit there and slowly cook itself.  Well, not on Cooper’s watch.

Hi, Jana here,

Awesome news! The tag-team duo that brought us ‘Bridesmaids‘ is back! Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo are taking celluloid for another spin. ‘Bridesmaids‘ became a slightly unexpected hit on a global scale for being a female-driven comedy. The upcoming flick is going to team Wiig and Mumolo  as writers again, but they will also produce, star and Wiig is going to try her hand at directing the project which is going to be a first effort for the comedian. TriStar Productions is backing the production and they have described the film as the story of “best friends who find themselves in over their heads and out of their depths, which were, perhaps, not too deep to begin with.”  No release date has been set.

Film Review: ‘Under The Skin’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 17th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

under-the-skin-scarlett-johannson-skip

It’s been thirteen years since Jonathan Glazer graced us with a feature film. The last one he made was ‘Sexy Beast‘ that starred Ben Kingsley, and it received some Oscar nominations. Before that film, he brought us the film ‘Birth‘ that starred Nicole Kidman. With that aside, Glazer is known for his compelling and amazing visual style in the music video business. You might not know it, but you have probably seen Glazer’s work. I’m not sure why Glazer has spent thirteen years looking for another feature film project, but for whatever the reason is, his choice of ‘Under The Skin‘ is pretty spectacular – visually speaking.

 sasheer-zamata-michelle-obama

Big news from Saturday Night Live. Sasheer Zamata is the newest regular cast member to be signed to the NBC comedy staple. There are six new comedians being added this year. Instead of focusing on Zamata’s laughable qualities, the focus is on her sex and race. There has been massive criticism that the new batch of SNL cast members lacks not only minorities, but specifically the inclusion of Zamata, who is African American.  Lorne Michaels has been looking into black female comedians for some time now. Kerry Washington’s guest hosting episode saw her run ragged running from skit to skit playing a number of roles from Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and Beyonce. Of the six new comedians coming on board this season all are white but Noel Wells who is Hispanic-Tunisian. There are only 2 African-Americans already anchored in their positions on the late night sketch show.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Iron Man 3’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 17th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

iron-man3

With ‘Iron Man 2‘ proving to be less than stellar back in 2010, this third sequel of the Marvelhero returns with a much needed boost of attitude and character that takes us through many twists and turns and tons of new Iron Man suits. This can be considered a sequel to both 2010′s ‘Iron Man‘ and Joss Whedon’s ‘The Avengers‘. Director Shane Black tosses away much of the wham-bam action scenes and focuses on the quick witted humor and our hero’s internal struggle with crippling panic attacks. I have no doubt this will be a fan favorite of the franchise.

Legendary Pictures announced today and the San Diego Comic Con their director for the long awaited live-action version of ‘World of Warcraft’, based on the expansive online game. At one point within the past few years, Sam Raimi was in talks to direct this project, but all of that fell through so he could direct ‘Oz The Great and Powerful‘ and reboot his ‘Evil Dead‘ series. Needless to say, Raimi is no longer involved in the production.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Robots, monsters, and Ron Perlman. Oh my. Director Guillermo Del Toro has given us a movie that we’ve all wanted to see since we were five years old. In an action-packed and brilliant special effects film, we have giant 30-story robots fighting vicious mega monsters on Earth. Guillermo was the perfect person for this project as he is a fan of genre films and can tell a great story with flawless structure and good acting, while mixing in loud and vibrating action sequences. ‘Pacific Rim‘ movies fast and will keep you on your toes till the very end, and while this summer has proved that big budget action movies won’t always go the distance, I’m betting this one will.

Alright, so I realize I’m a few days behind on talking about the Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds show from March 14th, but hell, I’m still reeling from how awesome the experience was. Needed a few extra days to process it all.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 16th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…..

Christopher Nolan’s third and final installment of his Batman franchise ranks as the best film in the series.  That’s difficult for me to say, as the first two films were so amazing.  Even with Heath Ledger’s iconic and eternal role as the Joker in the previous film, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ far surpasses anything my imagination could have hoped for in film.  Movies do not get better than ’The Dark Knight Rises’.

Film Review: ‘Zero Dark Thirty’

by Woozie on Jan 3rd, 2013

Suzanne here,

zerodarkthirtyposter

It would be very easy when creating a movie about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden to take an “America, Fuck Yeah” kind of tone, but director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal achieve something much more valuable. Zero Dark Thirty instead presents a quietly intense story about a woman obsessed and a methodical illustration of how U.S. intelligence worked to ultimately take down the architect of 911. The Top 20 Female Badasses In Film/TV!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 28th, 2012

Hi, Bryan and Lisa S. Here…..

9d8c1968aa60cdb4dca86ed6790187e2

I had some help writing this article with writer, Lisa S.   Lisa hails from netherworld of the Northwest and is not above watching zombie movies for 24 hours straight.  She loves all kinds of scary movies and is an avid music fan.  You might even find her perusing the used DVD bin at your local movie store looking for old Ernest movies and Sifl and Olly discs.  Lisa helped quite a bit with this article and you can expect her read many more of her articles on this site from this point forward.  Give her a warm welcome and visit her online book and record store HERE.

Now let’s get to the list.  Here are Boomstick’s Top 20 Female Badasses in film and television.  I tried to keep it in the horror/sci-fi genre, but a couple of action star made it in there.  These females are the most hardcore we feel, by how much ass they kick, their courage, and their sex appeal.  We dare you to find better role models and badasses than this.  Enjoy the list.

Bryan’s ‘John Carter’ 3D Bluray Review!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 15th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here…

In my opinion, ‘John Carter’ is one fun ride.  I really think the executives over at Disney had no idea how to market this movie.  Of course, it showed during its theatrical run, because it didn’t make near enough as everyone thought it would.  ‘John Carter’ cost around $200 million to make and is a story of epic proportions.  The ‘John Carter’ 3D Bluray is one to own if you love action adventure films.  Don’t let the critics persuade you not to like this film, because in fact, you will enjoy it.

BRIDGE – Chapter Nineteen

by Justin Cline on Apr 25th, 2012

CHAPTER NINETEEN

By the eighth Mississippi, Bridge had his map back in hand and a good idea of where he was headed.  It must have been a long walk from the cemetery to The Bethany for a man who’d been forced to vacate his own grave, but in the van it was a short ride from their current location to the outskirts of the city.  The hope in making the trip was to find something—anything—at the gravesite that would point him forward in the investigation.  Between himself and the cat, they had killed off all other viable leads. Hi Bryan Here….

Now I’ll be honest.  I have only seen the first Pirates film and now I have seen the latest ‘On Stranger Tides’ film.  I didn’t care much for the first film.  I felt it dragged and was too boring. I know it had a huge budget and was full of adventure, but the adventure and action was less than stellar.  I know I’m the odd man out on this issue as I know tons of friends love this series of films and swear by it, but really never did much for me.  Saying that, I do think Johnny Depp is AMAZING in these films.  He definitely deserves an Oscar WIN.  Other than that and maybe the fact that Keith Richards has a little something to do with the films, I just can’t get into it.  Same rings true for this ‘On Stranger Tides’ sequel.  Yes, it had a bit more thrill and fun, but ultimately fell short.  I wish I felt differently.  I really want to like these movies, but sadly I can’t do it.

Hi Bryan Here….

I’ve been looking forward to the Guillermo Del Toro produced horror film ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark’ for quite some time.  No, it isn’t a spinoff or the inspiration from the Nickelodeon show ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark’.  It is a remake of the 1973 made for tv movie of the same name.  I did not know what to expect really from the movie before I watched it.  I was thinking it was going to be all horror, but to my surprise it was a much scarier, more hardcore horror film in the vein of the 80’s film ‘Gremlins’.  This is ultimately a kids film.  A very scary, dark, brutal kids film. When I was 10 or twelve years old, and I watched this, I would have nightmares for months.  This would have scared the shit out of me.

Classic Waxxx: Eric Clapton “Eric Clapton”

by NapkinArt on Aug 9th, 2011

Times are really tough for a lot of folks in the world, right now. I mean, where does one even begin to break up the black clouds circling overhead? How much more bad news can we, as a people, take in one sitting? I honestly don’t want to know the answer to that question, but it is times like these that I can take refuge in my record collection, especially when my collection has this gem of an album by Eric Patrick Clapton.

I’m sure by now most music fans are familiar with the guitar genius of Eric Clapton, via his unsurpassed talents with bands The Yardbirds, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers and Cream. However, “Slowhand” has been recording critically and commercially successful album as a solo artist for nearly four decades, and his first self-titled LP proved (and still proves) that Clapton is indeed, God. Still playing catch up.  So this is just one day late, but that’s much better than eight days right?  Well anyway, this is a pretty great week for releases so let us jump right in and get to all the goodies.  Some of the must own blu-rays include ‘Buster Keaton Short Films’, ‘Rango’, plus some other goodies.   As usual, in this article, you will get some info about the disc and the extras that come with the movie as well as a personal opinion about the movie and a link to purchase the film over at AMAZON where you can save quite a bit of money, and it will give a small percentage kick back to this site so we can continue bringing you excellent stories and sales.

Enjoy and Here We Go!!

‘The Goodbye Look’

Airdate 06/21/2011

When last we left the 4Gs, they were in a mysterious greenhouse text-snooping Melissa’s phone to get information on Rosewood’s most famous missing dead person, Ian. Cue the creepy slamming doors and then rocks or coconuts (neither make sense, but what else could it be?) falling from the sky on the glass panes.  Using their keen survival instincts, they leave and wind up walking in Allison’s old drive-way/yard only to see Jason (A’s brother). Parker Bagley was sneakily replaced with Drew Van Acker, former underwear model. This handsome, new Jason is dimpled and rough and blond. Now I finally have a legit reason to watch this show.

Hi Bryan Here….

WOW.  This was a mighty mighty fun blu-ray set to get through.  Took a while as there are hours and hours of extras and commentaries to listen and watch.  It was great watching all of these again.  Some greater than others.  I haven’t watched all of the Superman films since that tin DVD box set came out several years ago.  Oh man do these newly remastered blu-rays look fucking beautiful in HI-DEF.  So, this particular review will be set up by film.  I will go through all eight discs of the set and outline everything you would ever want to know about them.  From the movie itself to the extras and the audio and video quality.  This is one hell of a set and Warner Bros. and DC went above and beyond the call of making one AWESOME home video release in Superman.

Hi Bryan Here…

Director Marcus Nispel (Remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th and the up and coming Conan The Barbarian film) has signed on to direct yet another horror film, but this time an original horror film.  The film in question will be called “Blackmask” and sounds like sort of a nod to a couple of 80’s horror films.
