Film Review: ‘A Most Violent Year’!
Hi everyone, Bryan Here….
By the title alone, you’d think this was in fact ‘A Most Violent Year‘ or a very violent movie. However, that is not exactly the case here. In fact, it’s far from it. J.C. Chandor’s screenplay and film is a very slow burn that tells a story of the seedy underbelly of competing heating oil suppliers in 1981 New York City. The reason for the film’s title is that 1981 was considered New York City’s most violent year on record.

SHAFT (2019) – Blu-ray Review!
THE FILM
We need more heroes like Shaft. Even if he breaks a few of the rules in order to take out the bad guys, he gets the job done and makes the world a better place, all while having a smile on his face and consistently makes us laugh. Thank you Shaft or shall I thank Samuel L. Jackson who looks like he’s having the time of his life in this film. Either way, this sequel to the 2000 film along with the original Shaft movies from the 1970s is Pitch Perfect Shaft, and I couldn’t be happier about it.
‘Nightingale’ – Film Review!
“In all of its bloody chaos, you can still find the beauty within ‘Nightingale’.”
The 2014 feature film ‘The Babadook‘ took the world by storm. The horror that Australian writer-director Jennifer Kent created in that movie was refreshing and original. It quickly became a genre favorite amongst horror fans and myself where I still watch it five years later on a regular basis. Kent’s second film ‘Nightingale‘ is a huge deviation from ‘The Babadook‘ in tone, style, and time, although the semblance of a mother-daughter relationship is rooted in the story. This period piece is an ultra-violent thriller that goes for the realistic approach where a woman who underwent the vilest attack sets out on a revenge journey to confront her assailants in Australia’s blood-soaked 19th century.
Annabelle Comes Home – Film Review!
Set in the horrifying Conjuring universe where paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren travel around the world and investigate strange phenomenons, perform exorcisms, and help families out with evil spirits, have both seen some truly terrifying things. The catch is that it’s all real or at least based on real-life events. With all of these horror movies that started with The Conjuring, there have been a few spinoff movies. The most popular of them is the frightening possessed doll named Annabelle, which is now on its third movie titled Annabelle Comes Home. Directed by Gary Dauberman, who has been the lead writer on the past Annabelle films, this sequel is his first foray into the director’s chair with original filmmaker James Wan producing. The result is too much of a slow pace for its own good, in addition to taking itself too seriously in an already flooded cheap scare and tiresome plot that we have seen two dozen times before.
Cinepocalypse 2019 Unleashes Genre Lineup!
Genre fans all over the world, lend me your ears. CINEPOCALYPSE 2019 is happening in Chicago at the Music Box Theater on June 13th – June 20th. The film festival is Chicago’s premiere genre festival for all things horror, sci-fi-foreign, and fun. There will be eight days of features, short films, parties, and more. This is something you’re definitely going to want to attend if you’re a fan of genre filmmaking, because there will be some never-before-seen vintage films with new R- rated cuts and brand new world premieres of some of the latest and greatest movies in the horror realm, specifically Glenn Danzig’s ‘Verotika‘.
Dragged Across Concrete – Film Review!
Dragged Across Concrete is the third film from S. Craig Zahler that focuses on two police detectives (Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn) who are put on suspension and are looking to make some extra money to support their families, even if it means doing something dangerous off the grid. It’s a fantastic film for sure. The 1080p HD transfer, DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio mix, and two excellent bonus features are all worth your time. Highly Recommended!
‘The Best of Enemies’ – Film Review!
“The Best of Enemies is worth the watch.”
The Best of Enemies is yet another film hitting theaters that tackles race relations and bills itself as a feel good comedy of sorts. Last year we got Blackkklansman and Green Book, two very different takes, and yet both wrapped up the systemic racism with pretty bows and left viewers feeling pretty good about the outcomes. The Best of Enemies is no different, as it’s based on a true story and attempts to show how even the most racist among us can change their ways. It’s an enjoyable movie; the performances are strong, and the story is a good one, but if you had a beef with Green Book for the way it portrayed race, you will probably take issue with The Best of Enemies, too.
Dan Moran’s Top Films of 2018 and his Award Nominations!
This year I saw 102 new movies in 2018. That number is actual movies released in 2018. I count Netflix and streaming movies released this year because that is where we are heading but the majority of the 102 was in movie theaters. I decided not to rank my top movies this year because at the end of the day the difference between #10 thru #3 is usually based on my mood when I write the list. So I just put my top movies in ABC order.
My Favorite Movies Released in 2018!
The year of 2018 has come to a close and over the past 365 days, I’ve seen roughly 175 new films that were released. I had a ton of fun watching each and every single one of them, even if I came out sour towards a film. There were a ton of great films this year that ranged from big action blockbusters, emotional indie dramas, scary-as-hell films that still haunt me, and some laugh out loud movies that always put me in the right mood. I’d chalk 2018 as a winner in the movie business, because there are some films that came out that I will truly cherish for a long time to come.
‘First Man’ Film Review #2!
Anytime I see a movie about space the technology seems effortless. Even in space disaster movies, the main character is one button or airlock away from safety. The technology and engineering are always #15 on the list of most movies set in space. Even movies like Apollo 13 romanticize space travel to a large degree and gloss over the real work it takes to even get up there. First Man takes a different approach to launch humans into space by making every single aspect of the space program of the 60s be, frankly, terrifying.
Fantastic Fest 2018 Second Wave of Motion Pictures Announced!
Fantastic Fest is one of the events that is pure bliss for any fan of genre cinema. If you love horror, sci-fi, foreign, action, and even adult-oriented movies from the 1970s, then Fantastic Fest is the place to let that freak flag fly high and be with like-minded individuals that truly appreciate the art of movies. All of the madness and fun will take place in Austin, TX starting on September 20th and run for 10 days at the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar St. This year, which is the 14th annual festival of Fantastic-ness, captures the essence of the Korean movie scene with a ton of cool films being showcased from Korea, both new and old.
