Hey guys, Jana here,

Alien Nation (1988) Directed by Graham Baker Shown from left: Mandy Patinkin, James Caan

Jeff Nichols (‘Mud‘) is teaming up with 20th Century Fox to give a new spin on the 1988 sci-fi thriller ‘Alien Nation‘. Nichols is looking to write and direct the reboot that took the “buddy-cop” classification as far as anyone has by pairing up a curmudgeonly, racist, vet with not just someone different than him, but someone of another race entirely.

A few years from now, Earth will have the first contact with an alien civilization. These aliens, known as Newcomers, slowly begin to be integrated into human society after years of quarantine but are victims of a new type of discrimination. When the first Newcomer police officer, Sam Francisco is assigned his new partner, he is given Matthew Sykes , a mildly racist veteran, the animosity between them soon gives way to respect as they investigate the Newcomer underworld, and especially Newcomer leader William Harcourt.

I never thought I’d see the day when we would have a reboot of ‘Alien Nation‘, but I sure am excited about this one. I wonder if this will spawn a series of films and projects with a alien/human storyline from the 70s and 80s. I can’t wait to find out. The original film starred James Caan and Mandy Patinkin and went on to inspire a short-lived TV series.
